Angels - 000 000 000 - 0 4 0Beckett: 9 IP, 4 H, 0 BB, 8 K, 108 pitches
Red Sox - 103 000 00x - 4 9 0
Youkilis's solo home run into the Monster Seats in the first got the Red Sox on the board. Yook also doubled into the left field corner with one out in the third, right before Ortiz belted a dong down the right field line. It was his 9th post-season home run. Then Manny walked, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on Lowell's single to center. (box)
Beckett was absolutely masterful (and dominant!). Figgins singled to start the game, then Beckett set down the next 19 batters in a row (with only three balls hit out of the infield). Only two Angels runners got to second base all night: Figgins in the first and Aybar in the eighth. Figgins was the only Angel to touch third.
Beckett went to a three-ball count only twice: Figgins in the first (single) and Izturis in the fifth (pop to short). He went to two balls on only six other batters.

Lineups:
Pedroia, 2B Figgins, RF
Youkilis, 1B Cabrera, SS
Ortiz, DH Guerrero, DH
Ramirez, LF Anderson, LF
Lowell, 3B Izturis, 3B
Drew, RF Kotchman, 1B
Varitek, C Kendrick, 2B
Crisp, CF Napoli, C
Lugo, SS Willits, CF
John Lackey (3.01, 144 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.27, 139 ERA+)
While Tim Wakefield is not on the Red Sox roster, the Angels have left off outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. (left knee injury) and pitcher Bartolo Colon (right elbow pain). Vladimir Guerrero (right triceps tendinitis) will likely start the series as the DH (he has not played the outfield since September 4).
Also, Dan Lamothe of Red Sox Monster invited me to take part in a blogger roundtable of previewing the series (along with Ian Bethune of Sox & Dawgs, Mike Colucci of Red Sox Stats Guy and Cam Smith of SoxNest). Read it here.
Both NL series start today: Rockies at Phillies at 3 and Cubs at Diamondbacks at 10.
Papelbon: 2006 to 2007. ... The Globe has a feature on Mike Lowell. ... Scouts discuss the Angels.
Wakefield:
It stinks. It really does, but it's not like it was in '99. They're not taking me out because they think I can't get hitters out. This was a decision we made as a team. Trust me, it was a hard decision to make when I was sitting in that office. It's hard to take yourself out of the equation sometimes ... but in a short series with the rules changing, I don't want to hurt us.ESPN's Jonah Keri has the "Thinking Fan's Approach" and "Nonthinking Fan's Approach" to the ALDS. Also, 9 of 10 ESPN writers pick the Red Sox, 7 of 10 pick Cleveland, 8 of 10 pick the Cubs, and 6 of 10 pick the Phillies.
The Herald's Michael Silverman says: Red Sox in 5. The Globe's writers' picks are here.
Rob Bradford writes about Manny Ramirez, "by all accounts one of the smartest, best-prepared hitters in the history of the game".
Later in the workout, which is done 30 minutes before every game, Page throws four rings at Ramirez. Each ring has a different colored ball attached to it, and Page calls out the color of the ball Manny has to grab out of mid-air.At the beginning of this season, I mentioned the ultra-fine point pens (0.25 mm line width) I keep score with. I was surpised to learn that there is exists an even-finer 0.20 mm pen. But I never saw it for sale at my store in Manhattan.
"It's comical how good he is at it," Page said. "Other guys try it, but they don't come close."
Most people also don't realize Ramirez is the only position player who routinely stretches and runs with the pitchers. And hardly anyone sees Manny in the weight room nine hours before the first pitch of night games, at home and on the road.
Well, guess what I found three weeks ago in Mississauga -- and am breaking out for the first time tonight? 0.20, baby!

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 510 of 510Hey, is it just me, or does Beckett seem dominant? :-)
Dominator - I like it!
And Cmdr. Kick Ass takes another name!
Beckett certainly IS DOMINANT.
OK, what the hell is Surviving Grady? A band? A reference to Grady Little? Don't laugh at how uncool I am, please!
JB!
Ish - All of them are delayed.
Is the radio behind or the tv?
It must be your cable provider, then. Somehow, some way, Time Warner Cable got it down pat with the radio.
heartbreak kid looks funny.
Ok maybe Dominator is better...
Would Tito have Beckett pitch the 9th?
Surviving Grady is another Sox blog...there's a link to it on the JoS page.
Dominator! I love it!
Hey, don't say anything good about Time Warner Cable - Sarah is here!
Well done Commander Kick-Ass! (aka, Joshy.)
Heartbreak Kid - the original is very funny. Charles Grodin and Cybil Shepherd. Whose name I probly just misspelled.
Who we gonna see in the top of the ninth? Beckett? Bot?

Hey, don't say anything good about Time Warner Cable - Sarah is here!
Well, that's the only good thing I can say about them. Comcast is usually a second or so behind, which makes it annoying.
But it's as much TBS as it is TWC. Fox is terrible with delays.
Time Warner or Tom Werner.
the radio is behind. would pull out my engineers hat and flourish the electronic reasons why but that would be boring.
Amy - surviving grady boys are at survinggrady.com. Sophmoric humor abounds
Don't laugh at how uncool I am, please!
Hee hee, that's sweet. It's always cool to be uncool here in Joy Nation.
Charles Grodin---thanks, Laura. I was just trying to remember who was in the original.
I think Beckett is done. I think you'll see Bot.
Heartbreak Kid - the original is very funny. Charles Grodin and Cybil Shepherd. Whose name I probly just misspelled.
oh i'll have to check it out! netflix, hello ;D
i love both charles grodin and mz. shepherd thoroughly :)
Halos should have Santana pitch game 4 (if it goes that far)
Charles Grodin---thanks, Laura. I was just trying to remember who was in the original.
I Googled it this morning. I remembered Cybil S but not the male lead.
the radio is behind. would pull out my engineers hat and flourish the electronic reasons why but that would be boring.
That's strange. More than one station.
I will check out that blog after the game. THanks for the explanation. I thought I was missing out on some cool new (or old) band. It would be a good name for a band.
tdcg, oh yeah, then you'll definitely enjoy it. i was going to say netflix it. :)
the scene everyone remembers is eating crackers in bed.
More than one station
SG - very popular blog. but for me, at least, their shtick has gotten a bit same-y after 4 years.
they do get good nesn screen shots though.
I Googled it this morning. I remembered Cybil S but not the male lead.
Glad to hear you, too, cannot rely on memory alone. Who played the poor wife who got the awful sunburn?
Thanks Laura! You know my hatred knows no bounds. (Though now that I am no longer fighting them over EI, I'm feeling less vitriolic.)
More than one station
Maybe it's my cable! In the 9th I'll check WTIC. I'm listening to a local FM station out of Rochester, NH.
LBJ in LF for MBM.
WTIC is way behind, you're right!
Boy, Ish, you will go to amazing lengths to avoid the TBS announcers!
But Beckett still on the hill?
they started SG after 2003. having won the next year, i get the feeling they'd rather not have his name attached to their site. too late!
(I may be wrong)
BECKETT is back out!!
Glad to hear you, too, cannot rely on memory alone.
My memory SUCKS. Drives me crazy.
I'll think about that sunburn question.
Beckett in for the 9th. Wow!
THAT'S MY BOY!!!!!
LYNDON!!! He sure knows how to make an entrance!
LBJ makes the catch!!!
LBJ!
2 pitches 2 out!
Fuck yeah!
A complete game for the dominator!
He doesn't disappoint ladies and gents...LBJ does not disappoint.
Actually, 4 pitches 2 outs. Wouldn't surprise me if TBS missed the first 2 pitches.
LBJ sure was speedy there. His catch and Coco's certainly were something.
WOOOOT!!!!!!!!
ONE DOWN, TEN TO GO.
Hell YEAH Josh!
THE DOMINATOR!!!! What a great game!!
Quick freaking complete game, that is the way to do it.
SHUTOUT!
3rd post season shutout of career.
And Josh Beckett starts the playoffs in grand fashion! Great job boys!
Crowd roars! Boy, that was quite a performance from Beckett. Amazing.
couldn't have asked for anything more outta the first game :)))
Boy, Ish, you will go to amazing lengths to avoid the TBS announcers!
Nah. I actually like Steve Stone, but I've been listening to Uncle Joe for the entire season to date, and this is when you really want to listen to the radio. They really give you the feeling of the postseason.
Watah!
Time of game: 2 hours, 27 minutes.
Now we have to wait another 48 hours to see them play again....:(
MOTHERFUCKER, I WANT SOME MORE ICE TEA!
[Amy: I just looked it up. An actor named Jeannie Berlin played Lila, who had the sunburn.]
Not sure I'll be online on Friday given the time (5:30 PT, right?). Have a good game-thread...
Now we have to wait another 48 hours to see them play again....:(
At least there is baseball tomorrow. I was about jumping out of my shoes yesterday. 3 games tomorrow.
What a great start! One down, ten to go!
(And it's still so nice and early!)
See, this is the appropriate place for Glenn Geffner. Interviewing guys after the game. Leave the postseason play-by-play to the big guys, Joe and Obie.
Thanks, Laura. I bet the remake isn't as good. The scenes I remember best are the sunburn scene and the scene when Grodin hunts down Cybil Shepherd at her midwest college and meets the tall, blonde frat boys she hangs out with.
will be interesting to see how dice-k will do.
also there is a game tonight. cubs d'backs.
Remember that part where I said he was pitching to complete if they were stupid enough to let him? I'm eating that right now. Big plate of it, with barbecue sauce...
Once again great job boys...now let's hope the Tribe can hold their end of the bargain.
Well, I wonder how many times during the post game show that Rice will say something that will make me go, WTF?
At least three I think.
Yes, Ish, this baseball stuff is addictive. We may all need a support group for baseball addicts in the winter. A ten step program to bridge November until April, or at least March.
and now....
the bionic woman.
even tho it kinda sucks. i'm all in.
By the time the WS ends, I'm always exhausted and I think I want a good long break from baseball.
Then January rolls around, and I'm flipping channels, and end up watching Caribbean league ball. :)
Hey Amy, more trivia, I see that Jeannie Berlin is the daughter of Elaine May, who was also in that movie.
don't forget hockey, y'all.
*snicker*
B's were on tonight. i wonder if anyone in boston had that game on.
You know, I actually was thinking that the actress was related to Elaine May, who (I think) wrote the movie with Mike Nichols. I wondered whatever happened to her. Guess I can Google her and find out now that the game is over.
WELL DONE EVERYONE 10 to go
don't forget hockey, y'all.
*snicker*
B's were on tonight. i wonder if anyone in boston had that game on.
So funny you said that. Here in Canada, as soon as the game ended, they switched over to hockey highlights, Sens v Leafs (the big Ontario rivalry). It was like, welcome back, Canada. :)
Opening Day here, quite a big deal. First fights of the season and all.
oh wait, no they weren't. hah.
but they will be.
*crickets*
So Amy, you vaguely remembered, that's cool.
Mike Nichols, Mr Diane Sawyer.
So funny you said that. Here in Canada, as soon as the game ended, they switched over to hockey highlights, Sens v Leafs (the big Ontario rivalry). It was like, welcome back, Canada. :)
aww. i love how canada is totally all about hockey. hockey is great. very fun game to watch. i used to go to so many games at the fleetcenter (er, td banknorth garden) once upon a time :)
Yes, the long term memory sometimes kicks in for things like movies and television. It's scary at times what I can remember and even scarier what I have cannot.
The Sox own Lackey - take the read sox out of the mix and Lackey is a .600 pitcher. 1 and 7 vs the Sox now.
I love Remy on post game break downs.
Going out to sit in the backyard with a (5th, 7th?) glass of wine and the pookies.
Back somewhat soon.
LOL, so much for the memory. I looked it up. Neil Simon wrote the screenplay---Elaine May directed. Mike Nichols was not involved in this one.
Rs- Figgins made it to third in the first inning. Other than that good wrap bud.
Going out to sit in the backyard with a (5th, 7th?) glass of wine and the pookies.
Back somewhat soon.
hehe. cuteness.
I've moved back to our bedroom and the XM (why oh why can I not have a nice baseball loving partner?) and haven't heard the word dominant yet.
Remy in post game (paraphrase):
*Who's questioning Ortiz? I think this has been one of his finest seasons in a Red Sox uniform.
*Sure the home runs are down, but he's been injured a lot of the season and his numbers are up in almost every category.
*You hit 57 home runs in a season, you're going to get pitched to differently the following season.
Whenever I see Beckett's facial hair, it looks like a beard piercing that goes through his chin and out his lower lip from underneath.
aw yeah cubs and uh, d'backs time.
...
(6th glass of wine right here.)
Whenever I see Beckett's facial hair, it looks like a beard piercing that goes through his chin and out his lower lip from underneath.
haha! that's totally what it is. but i like it. it's so...him.
(actually it's kinda dave navarro, but yeah)
(why oh why can I not have a nice baseball loving partner?)
Hmm, that might be harder than having one who is a Yankee fan. At least he gets the game and the passion for it.
Am I greedy for wishing that I could get the away broadcast on my XM? I mean, it's pretty decent that they give me the options of the home broadcast and the ESPN after all, but I'm rooting for the Cubs.
Wahooooooooooooooooooooooo, beckett is awesome.
On a side note, I actually thought the TBS guys were good today, except for that incredibly awkward and untalented 'sideline reporter'.
Of course I'm always happier when we win.
GO SOX
500th comment.
I hope nobody beat me to it!
Whenever I see Beckett's facial hair, it looks like a beard piercing that goes through his chin and out his lower lip from underneath.
For a second I thought this was gonna go into a Chuck Norris-esque line.
Figgins actually made it to third in the first inning.
But amazing start by Beckett, hopefully Dice can keep it going.
Wha-hoooooo!
Go go Dice-K!
TBS is dumb. Watching the Cubs/D-Backs game, and Lou Pinella comes out of the dugout to talk to his pitcher and TBS assumes it's a pitching change. I see the entire infield gathered at the mound, Pinella talking to his pitcher, then just as TBS cut to commercial, I got a glimpse of Lou walking back to the dugout.
Bout 30 seconds later they came back like nothing happened.
Just got back from the show and watched the tape of the game...
What a beaut by Beckett! That was great, loved the CG SO and a little help from LBJ sneakin' in in the 9th.
One down, ten to go.
Just siphoned through the thread after I left...thought the comment from Laura RE: Leafs/Sens was funny...
The concert I went to (great show) was at a tiny little place in Guelph (go old thread references!) - probably held about 100 people, ceilings were normal height...wasn't a stage, but they did manage to have one TV in the merch area - and you know what was on that one TV... ;-)
It made avoiding the Red Sox score even more difficult, since I was concerned every time I looked up. But I was able to successfully avoid it until I caught up on tape...
Anyway class in 6 hours, time to catch some ZZZs! Night, all!
On a side note, I actually thought the TBS guys were good today, except for that incredibly awkward and untalented 'sideline reporter'.
Yeah, not bad...haha that guy was somethin' else...Sancho Mota or something like that. Loved the mustache!
Also, re: Flo's interview at the end, that guy asked some stupid questions and for every response, Papi included "Well everbody know that..."
i.e. "Well everybody know that Lackey a good pitcher" or something
"Everbody know that Daisuke can pitch"
etc.
I've moved back to our bedroom ... and haven't heard the word dominant yet.
I couldn't resist that.
(why oh why can I not have a nice baseball loving partner?)
Hmm, that might be harder than having one who is a Yankee fan.
Oh for sure! I always felt (and I'm pretty sure Allan agreed) that our love of the game was more important. We went on baseball road trips, and to Cooperstown, stuff like that - and also went to tons of games together at the Stadium - when we were fans of opposite teams.
I could give a shit about the announcers, but to miss pitches and outs to show promos that can't happen
Well done and it's 1-0!
My only complaint is that Beckett was so good that at times the game's atmosphere was a little too mellow. Unworried.
