ALDS 2: Red Sox 6, Angels 3

Red Sox up 2-0? Essackly!

***

Kelvim Escobar (3.40, 127 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.40, 104 ERA+)

None of the Angels have ever faced Matsuzaka. Sean McAdam calls Dice's season "predictably unpredictable" and wonders which pitcher will be on the hill tonight?
Will it be the one who allowed two runs or fewer in 17 of his 32 starts this season? Or will it be the one who allowed five or more runs in 10 different starts? Will it be the one who struck out seven or more in 17 starts? Or the one who walked three or more in 17 outings?
Escobar did not pitch against Boston this season. While Lugo (4-for-7) and Crisp (5-for-14) have hit Escobar well in the past, Ortiz (4-for-24, .167) and Manny (7-for-32, .219) have not. Opposing batters hit .337/.417/.535 against Escobar in September after a .192/.279/.233 August.

Mike Scioscia said that Vladimir Guerrero will "probably" play right field tonight; Garret Anderson (0-for-4, 2K in Game 1) will also be in lineup, despite his pinkeye.

Coco Crisp talks about playing center field at Fenway:
You take [Beckett's] 94- or 95-mile-per-hour fastball, his curve, what he likes to do to the guy on strike two, is he going to set him up with the high fastball. Are they going to throw the guy away or pitch him in? You take all that into consideration on how you're going to play the guy.
Josh Beckett's strong of 19 consecutive Angels retired tied the Yankees' Mike Mussina for the third-longest string of outs in the postseason, behind two other Yankees: Don Larsen (26, in 1956) and Herb Pennock (22, in 1927).

Before that, at 5 PM:
New York (Pettitte, 4.05, 107 ERA+) at Cleveland (Carmona, 3.06, 145 ERA+)

Damon's going to be replaced in left field by Bronson Sardinha.

Two in scoring position, one out in Cleveland. Taking Damon out for Sardinha.

Rob said...

Sizemore will be put on intentionally. Bases loaded, 1 out, for Astrubal Cabrera.

allan said...

hahaha -- pulling noodle arm from LF.

Rob said...

Can you keep me updated on the Sox? I'm really into this Indians/MFY game.

laura k said...

ish: kotchman walked on 6 pitches, now 1-2 count on morales.

Amy said...

It seems many of us are watching Yankee game. I keep flipping back and forth. Can't stand watching DiceK walk people.

laura k said...

at fenway: man on 1st (bb), no outs, 1-2 on morales.

Rob said...

Thank you so much, L. I don't have the MLBtv thing like you guys do.

Amy said...

Pedroia hurt? Kotchman to third.

Sarah Haendler said...

Uh oh... that didn't look enjoyable at all.

laura k said...

morales: ground ball, pedroia dives to left, kicks off glove into RF. kotchman to 3rd.

1st & 2nd, no outs

Rob said...

Cabrera popped up.

allan said...

mfy gifting wrapping this win - clev won;t take it.

hafner time!!

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm trying to keep an eye on the MFY using the picture in picture feature, but it's not working as well as I would like.

laura k said...

sg, did you get your cool new tv?

Rob said...

Hafner better end this here.

CI, Abreu, and Slappy due up in the 12th.

laura k said...

in boston: full count to mathis

Rob said...

PRONK forgetting he just needs a base hit. Going for the walkoff GS.

Amy said...

Angels score on fielder's choice. Two out. DiceK really pissing me off.

Rob said...

OH MAN.

FULL COUNT, BASES LOADED, 2 OUT. A walk wins the game.

laura k said...

mathis 5-3, lowell throws to 1st, run scores

2-1 boston

Amy said...

Full count in Cleveland. Walk him in...!

Sarah Haendler said...

This is not the Dice-k I was hoping to see.

Amy said...

laura k said...

YES!!!! CLEVELAND WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

love it. mfy one game away from a sweep.

Sarah Haendler said...

Well done TRIBE!

Colin said...

Fuck yeah Cleveland!!

laura k said...

huge cheer goes up in fenway as the score is posted!

Rob said...

Rut roh back at Fenway.

Colin said...

Damn it Dice-K! At least the MFY lost though...

laura k said...

chone figgins hits to LF, Being over-runs it, screws up, ends up a double.

score tied 2-2

Amy said...

Meanwhile, our team has lost the lead. WTF is wrong with DiceK? ARRGGGH

nixon33 said...

dicek needs to put giys away.
fuck

Colin said...

Methinks run support will be key for the Dice-K/Sox victory.

Colin said...

Jesus...

laura k said...

o-cab hits an rbi 2b, figgins scores

3-2 angels

Rob said...

L, Thanks again for the updates. I'm on the game now. Big cheers as they put the MFY/Indians score on the board.

allan said...

manny has been a bit brutal out there on these 2 plays.

Colin said...

Ok Sox...your pitcher is gettin' the shakes so it's time for you to show how much you love opposing bullpens.

laura k said...

ish, no prob :)

they STILL haven't put our game on here!!! if we didn't have mlbtv we'd be going insane.

Sarah Haendler said...

Yeah, Colin, it's sure as hell not going to be pitching...

laura k said...

just now, our game goes on here.

don't panic, folks. we can score runs too.

Amy said...

DiceK, you'd better settle down. I am wishing we had started Schilling tonight.

laura k said...

oh yeah, cause schilling is such a sure bet. /sarcasm

thatdietcokegirl said...

yay tribe! (finally. no j/k;)

dice. oh dice. what is wrong with you pal. you know this is the playoffs right? ;p

Amy said...

Is the Sox game on TBS and TNT now?

allan said...

MFY fans: "whaaa, the bugs, the bugs!! waaaahhhh."

allan said...

down by 1 with 8 innings to hit.

i can deal with that.

Amy said...

Well, Schilling was our 2004 hero. And DiceK is certainly new to the MLB post season. But it is only the second inning, and we are only one run behind. I should have had a third drink at dinner.

allan said...

Well, Schilling was our 2004 hero.

So was Bellhorn.

Not many calls for him to return.

laura k said...

Schilling was our 2004 hero, but we've seen him in 05, 06 and 07 since then. And he's been very, very human.

We're only down by one run in the 2nd inning (as you said). No need to panic.

allan said...

I should have had a third drink at dinner.

Oh, you are so far behind!!

Amy said...

I miss Mark Bellhorn also. (Well, OK, not really.) But one more drink---who knows? I might.

Colin said...

Ow that is embarassing.

Colin said...

Damn it Pedroia stop being a first pitch swinger!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

Third? Amy, you need to get going there... Unless you meant third bottle!

laura k said...

i hate the 1st pitch hacking.

Colin said...

Well that sucked...hopefully Daisuke learned what was happening in the 2nd and correct it in the third.

allan said...

other 3 series are all 2-0.

let's make it 4.

Sarah Haendler said...

I love the way you think, Sock.

Amy said...

Leadoff double. This is getting tiresome. Who do we have ready for long relief?

allan said...

slugo nails mrs. garret.

laura k said...

Nice play to erase the baserunner.

allan said...

steve stone said doubles are hit out of the box -- meaning due to good hustle -- then they show the replay and anderson is jogging slowly out of the box.

laura k said...

Leadoff double has already been earased, so no worries about that.

Amy said...

Two pretty strong cosmos. For me, usually more than enough, but not during the post season.

laura k said...

does anyone know the guy who posts here as andy? if anyone has an email address for him, could you email it to me?

laura k said...

mm, i love cosmopolitans.

are you at the cape?

Amy said...

Yes, at the Cape. Got here last night. Husband worked in Boston today, I worked here. Wellfleet.

laura k said...

wellfleet, like the oysters. i'm sure it's lovely. the sox will make it a perfect holiday for you.

Sarah Haendler said...

I did appreciate the way it looked like Mikey was slipping and Anderson had his arm out to give him a hand after the play at third there.

Colin said...

That was close...thank God for our fielders.

Sarah Haendler said...

I don't particularly like Aquafina, and I don't hold with bottled water in general, but that commercial was pretty funny.

Amy said...

We actually ate at a place called the Wicked Oyster, though we don't eat Oysters. Good drinks, good fish, good dessert. The TV in the bar had the game on, which we couldn't see from our table, but when Cleveland tied the score, there was a good roar in the bar!

allan said...

pitchers will gve up hits and runs -- it's a fact of the game.

but we won 96 games this year. and this banged up angels team is not going to stop us in this series.

allan said...

yook
flo
mbm
dr.

good stuff coming...

Amy said...

RS, you are way too sane...I am a worrier. I need your optimism to balance my neurotic self.

Sarah Haendler said...

Amy, I'm jealous - wish I were at the cape now, rather than in NYC.

allan said...

not very sane in the past, though as i have noted.

allan said...

flo walks.

Amy said...

Cape is beautiful this time of year with leaves turning red and the colors more intense than in the summer. But, hey, NYC is pretty exciting in the fall also.

A walk for Papi! Come on, Manny.

allan said...

sox won game 1 - tbs guys feel the need to act like escobar and the angels are the greatest team in the world.

guys, kelvim is not pedro '99.

Amy said...

My husband went to sleep. His team is down 0-2. I should feel badly for him. Is it awful that I am glad the Yankees lost? Always something to feel guilty about.

Manny Ks. Perhaps Doc will be hot?

thatdietcokegirl said...

these guys may as well be commentating on some random regular season game. WAKE UP BITCHES.

they are so boring.

Sarah Haendler said...

No Amy, it's not terribly exciting, it's just that we're excited that it doesn't smell as bad as august did! Mostly kidding - I like NY. We were up at the cape two weeks ago though, and it was very nice.

allan said...

My husband went to sleep. His team is down 0-2. I should feel badly for him. Is it awful that I am glad the Yankees lost? Always something to feel guilty about.

I'll let L take this one.

(You probably know my answer though.)

Amy said...

That was a strike??? Give me a break.

Sarah Haendler said...

Oh boo.

laura k said...

Is it awful that I am glad the Yankees lost?

NO! Being happy the Yankees lost doesn't mean you love your husband any less. Your team is your team is your team.

Always something to feel guilty about.

Nothing to feel guilty about - not in baseball! You didn't cause it and can't control it. You should enjoy it fully without the slightest trace of guilt, says I.

allan said...

and then lowell has to swing at a pitch too high, fearing another BS strike, and chops to short.

fuck you iASSonga.

laura k said...

I've actually switched from wine to tea so I can stay awake. We have some young relatives staying over, they're due in around 11:30 or midnight. I have to be host-y past my bedtime.

Amy said...

I love NYC, but the Cape is my escape for sanity. I have been coming here since childhood and finally bought a small cottage here four years ago---motivated in part by the fact that we wanted to bring our dog, and few places here allow dogs. Our dog just loves coming here, even though she hates the beach!

allan said...

as a sosher once wrote, the mfy could go 0-162 for 6 straight seasons, and in the seventh season go 0-161 but win the last game of the year, and he'd be pissed off that they won a game.

laura k said...

Sounds wonderful. An escape from the city is very important. We used to go to the Catskills w/ our dogs. Just for one week a year, so it was very special.

Amy said...

OK, Allan and Laura are now not only my baseball gurus, but also my shrinks! :) OK, no guilt. At least not about baseball.

laura k said...

OK, Allan and Laura are now not only my baseball gurus, but also my shrinks!

multi-tasking :)

laura k said...

yoooooooook

Amy said...

Of course, we don't really live in a city (Springfield hardly counts as a city), but we still love and need the escape.

The NY area is where we grew up, where our parents still live, and where one of our daughters now live, so we are there often, but is is never relaxing!

YOUK! Nice play!!

nixon33 said...

yoook
come on dicek quick outs

David said...

Gold Glover!

allan said...

i'll be switching from wine to more wine.

laura k said...

you're a good family, buying a cottage b/c of your dog. some people just wouldn't have a dog. (yucky people only)

thatdietcokegirl said...

ok a 1-2-3-4 inning ;D!!

allan said...

dice settling down. 2 straight 10 pitch innings.

nixon33 said...

im about to drink a magic hat halloween variety 12 pack...oh yeah

laura k said...

1-2-3-4 inning, i like that. not quite as good as 1-3-3, but it's working.

Amy said...

Yes, leaving the dog home made going away too sad. We still leave the poor cat home, but they adjust to being alone more easily than dogs. The dog, by the way, is a Red Sox fan, not a Yankee fan (or so she tells me).

allan said...

checked gameday -- mlb news ticker says nyy and cle are tied at 1-1 at the end of 9 innings -- sounds exciting!!!!

laura k said...

Our Cody is a Mets fan. She was found in Jackson Heights under the 7 line.

Not sure about Tala.

Amy said...

Just saw two typos in one of my posts. Too many cosmos. Too bad I can't edit. Oh, well, you will just have forgive my typos.

DREW, I am counting on you.

Amy said...

Oh, Drew, never mind.

Amy said...

I remember the 7 train from my days as a Mets fan. My dog was found at a trailer park in Chicopee, MA, so I figure she's a Red Sox fan.

thatdietcokegirl said...

Just saw two typos in one of my posts. Too many cosmos

hehe. oh man, i forgot about 'classy' drinks. i'm all wine or beer 24/7/365 ;/

laura k said...

What is with these announcers? "The Angels know if they can keep the lead through 6..."

Through 6? Aren't you a little ahead of yourselves?

Then they say how "no one usually hits the Angels bullpen". Oh really. And the Sox bullpen?

Sarah Haendler said...

We're very fortunate because we have a car (we live in Queens) and with our bizzaro freelance schedules can pretty much leave the city whenever we get the urge. It's great. I'm always happy to leave the city and always just as happy to see it again when we get home.

Now if only I had a dog. Though it would cause problems with the cape visits, I expect.

thatdietcokegirl said...

COCO CO.!!

allan said...

Sox bullpen ERA #1 in AL. LAA's pen ERA was about 1.20 higher.

My mother's mother was from Chicopee.

laura k said...

ococ on the bunt hit!

Sarah Haendler said...

Nice bunt ocoC!

Amy said...

i'm all wine or beer 24/7/365 ;/

And Diet Coke, I assume.

I can't say I am listening to these announcers.

allan said...

pitchout but bobbled by johnny mathis.

ococ bs.

laura k said...

my last few years in nyc, i REALLY missed having a car. we rented and did zipcar a lot, but we could never just take off whenever we wanted.

it was also just $$. i live to travel, so i was usually saving money for a big trip somewhere.

allan said...

2 outs, let's not waste this slug-o.

Amy said...

My mother's mother was from Chicopee.

Really? Have you ever been there? There isn't much there in terms of a town, mostly just residential. But I guess there is a trailer park since that's where the shelter folks said they picked up our dog 6 years ago when we adopted her.

thatdietcokegirl said...

nope, he controlled the head of the bat.

laura k said...

My dog was found at a trailer park in Chicopee, MA, so I figure she's a Red Sox fan.

Definitely! Plus she's a rescue, the best. All ours have been, too.

Amy said...

Come on, Lugo.

Sarah Haendler said...

I go under that train station everyday, Laura. I actually live off the E, but can walk to Shea, so I usually get to see the Mets a few times a year.

Amy said...

Shit, another wasted opportunity. Still just one run down though.

allan said...

these tbs guys have gotten much dumber since game 1. much.

allan said...

no, never been. her family moved down from quebec, she married and was up in vermont by the mid-1930s or so.

Rob said...

Lugo caught looking like the ball was some hot chick and the ump was his wife. Punched out.

laura k said...

I go under that train station everyday, Laura.

it's a fun area to visit. i never lived out there, but we used to go on food crawls with our suburban nephews.

nixon33 said...

come on offense.

Sarah Haendler said...

I gave up my car, but Dave refuses to part with his - he actually just bought a new one. (Well, new to us, anyhow. '05 Prius. We're in car love.)

Amy said...

All our pets have been rescues---either from shelters or people who couldn't keep them. My only problem is going into the shelters because I always cry and want to take them all home.

Amy said...

Vermont most definitely was nicer than Chicopee, I would assume.

Rob said...

I couldn't imagine not having a car. That's mostly because of where I live. The "corner store" is 3.5 miles away.

Sarah Haendler said...

Sounding awfully sensible there Amy. :) What's one run for our guys, right?

thatdietcokegirl said...

headline on yahoo: 'Insects help beat Yankees' psht! ;p

the pic is funny tho. it's jabba being sprayed by the ump like some sort of animal.

Amy said...

Sarah, where on the Cape do you go?

allan said...

tbs calls dice the $106 million pitcher.

106?

nice prep work. also makes it sound like that's the $$ for this one season.

Amy said...

No leadoff man on this time. Maybe we can get a 1-2-3?

laura k said...

going into shelters is a killer. it's so heartbreaking.

our dogs: 1 from aspca death row, 1 found in a subway stop in the bronx, 1 someone else rescued from the street in queens but couldn't keep, 1 found on the street (near death) in front of our apt bldg in washington heights, and 1 from a rescue group.

i think now that we live in the nice quiet suburbs, we won't be finding any more dying dogs on the street.

and now I am changing the subject b/c I will get upset thinking about him.

back to baseball.

Sarah Haendler said...

I have the same reaction to shelters, Amy. I want to give them all a home. We've been talking about getting a dog, but Dave wants to get a puppy from a breeder, and I refuse. Too many great dogs in the hands of Animal Care & Control! I think he's coming around.

Amy said...

So much for 1-2-3. Where was DiceK? He hurt himself there.

Sarah Haendler said...

Wow, that was stupid Dice.

Amy said...

OK, no more sad dog talk. Only happy dog talk and happy baseball talk.

laura k said...

but Dave wants to get a puppy from a breeder, and I refuse.

yay sarah :)

you could do breed rescue. that way you can rescue a dog and get a full breed, if that's important to him.

laura k said...

so the yankees got a thrubbing in game 1, then lost an epic nail-biter in game 2. how will they lose on sunday?! :)

Amy said...

Yes, Sarah, just keep watching the shelters. There are just wonderful dogs there, and if you know how to judge temperament, you can really find amazing pets. Ours was a skinny, dirty and hyper little thing, but I knew she would be a great dog, and she is.

OK, Laura said no more shelter talk.

Sarah Haendler said...

South Yarmouth - Dave's best friend from high school has a family friend with a cottage. (She's the same friend who was so thrilled that he moved to NYC to meet a Sox fan. We're good buddies now.)

allan said...

will henry call dice a pussy toad?

laura k said...

no, no, just no more for me. you guys talk about whatever you want.

re breed rescue: google the breed you want and the word rescue. poof! tons of dogs to choose from.

petfinder.com is great. that's how we found tala.

nixon33 said...

jesus fucking christ this inning.

thatdietcokegirl said...

goodbye dice. here comes lopez.

Sarah Haendler said...

Hey there, Javy, how you doin'?

Colin said...

Might be time for an early call to the bullpen there guys.

laura k said...

i think everyone is overreacting about dice-k.

nixon33 said...

great outing

laura k said...

which is not to say i disagree with the early hook. but it's not like dice got rocked.

Sarah Haendler said...

I think Dave's brother's dog has helped to convince him that a pure bred isn't the be all end all. She's mostly german shep, but much larger and floppier, and is just our very favorite dog. She comes to visit a lot.

laura k said...

mutts are the best. or at least mixed breeds. they're healthier. and just... greater. :)

Rob said...

I just don't know about Dice here in the postseason. Not a guy you want to have starting games if he's going to pitch like that. It's discouraging. Let's just hope the bullpen and the bats can pick him up.

Part of being a World Series winning team is having not just one ace, but two aces, then two more guys who can give you good outings and keep you in the game. It feels like you're throwing your #3 or #4 starter out there for Game 2.

Oh well. These are the men we have.

allan said...

so the yankees got a thrubbing in game 1, then lost an epic nail-biter in game 2. how will they lose on sunday?! :)

i vote another thrashing for the mfy in game 3. it's billy, after all.

Amy said...

We also checked rescue organizations But we ended up finding our dog at the local shelter. I used petfinder also. Just kept looking til the dog I knew was "our" dog showed up.

Our prior dog we adopted from a guy who just couldn't keep him. He (the guy) was heartbroken, and we felt lucky that we could help him and also help ourselves by adopting a beautiful and wonderful dog.

OK, it really is time for us to score some runs.

Rob said...

i think everyone is overreacting about dice-k.

It's just a little discouraging, is all. The thing that bugs me the most about him all season is how it just seems like he can be dominant but chooses to nibble instead.

But oh well. Dice is gone and so we'll look forward now.

Sarah Haendler said...

I think the next time we see Dice, he's lights out. Just a feeling.

Amy said...

So, Ish, do you think Schilling should have started the second game? I am also disappointed in DiceK, even though we are only one run behind. Maybe the Dominator just spoiled us.

Colin said...

Sorry L I'm still not convinced on your claim of overreaction to Dice-K. I'm getting a little tired of excuses and this scared animal pitching he's got going. Josh gets nervous but then angry and poof...opposing offense disappears. I don't see contingency plans with this guy.

laura k said...

FUCK YEAH!!

Sarah Haendler said...

Hey there ROY!

laura k said...

Colin, I wasn't trying to convince you. Think what you think.

Colin said...

Awesome...little guy finally produces.

Rob said...

LMAO. What a good play by Youk, stopping in the basepath and confusing Escobar, assuring Pedroia gets to third.

Like a bunt. Time for a Big Papi Dong Special.

Rob said...

Or not. iBB

allan said...

Win it for the dogs!!!!!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

Yeah, I vote for an embarrassing drubbing for Fat Billy as well.

Amy said...

OK, put Papi on so Manny can drive them BOTH home. I'll take that.

allan said...

Manny Manny chant starts!
