Kelvim Escobar (3.40, 127 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (4.40, 104 ERA+)
None of the Angels have ever faced Matsuzaka. Sean McAdam calls Dice's season "predictably unpredictable" and wonders which pitcher will be on the hill tonight?
Will it be the one who allowed two runs or fewer in 17 of his 32 starts this season? Or will it be the one who allowed five or more runs in 10 different starts? Will it be the one who struck out seven or more in 17 starts? Or the one who walked three or more in 17 outings?Escobar did not pitch against Boston this season. While Lugo (4-for-7) and Crisp (5-for-14) have hit Escobar well in the past, Ortiz (4-for-24, .167) and Manny (7-for-32, .219) have not. Opposing batters hit .337/.417/.535 against Escobar in September after a .192/.279/.233 August.
Mike Scioscia said that Vladimir Guerrero will "probably" play right field tonight; Garret Anderson (0-for-4, 2K in Game 1) will also be in lineup, despite his pinkeye.
Coco Crisp talks about playing center field at Fenway:
You take [Beckett's] 94- or 95-mile-per-hour fastball, his curve, what he likes to do to the guy on strike two, is he going to set him up with the high fastball. Are they going to throw the guy away or pitch him in? You take all that into consideration on how you're going to play the guy.Josh Beckett's strong of 19 consecutive Angels retired tied the Yankees' Mike Mussina for the third-longest string of outs in the postseason, behind two other Yankees: Don Larsen (26, in 1956) and Herb Pennock (22, in 1927).

Anyone else hate the K-Rod, A-Rod (heck K-Fed) nicknames? I sure do.
S-Gat
KRod in. Ortiz and Manny to come. One of them HAS to get a hit. Right?
the only 'rod' name i like is 'm-rod' for michelle rodriguez, cause she's like the only chick with one like that (except the original j-lo)
H & R - I like it.
Accomplished the same as a bunt, and even tho it didn't happen this time, gives you a better shot at getting a hit out of it.
Had to have someone like Peds there tho - good bat handler and sure not to poke the DP line drive
hi i'm back. i was here the whole time, just not at the computer. trying to be host-y. now they went to bed. not fans.
Whoops, forgot Youk. Sorry, Youk.

(Come ON, Cubbies.)
GOD I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!!!!
Yankees will not win ONE game this post-season and we will SWEEEEEEP!!!
Oh THANK YOU! I really was dreading extra innings. Manny may have missed each prior at bat, but he got the one that counted.
WHAT A FUCKING BOMB!!!! WOW, huuuuuuge dong out onto Lansdowne!
MBM! OH FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!
God that was beautiful. I'm going to rewind it and watch it again.
definitely lifespan shortening baseball
heh, that's true! 2004 probably shortened all our lives by a few years :)
Manny actually talking to the media! Wow.
Manny's talking to the press? Weird.
omg you could hear a pin drop at fenway. i don't think i've ever heard manny talk so much :))
wooohooooooo
night everyone!
Gotta love Manny standing there with his arms up after hitting that ball.
wish we could hear that --- rogers left tbs behind for hockey highlights
Amy, I was also dreading extras. I have work tomorrow, and it's late already!
WE're not getting Manny talking, we're getting hockey updates of course! (Fucking Canada)
(Just kidding)
Good night all, love you guys, see you Sunday!!
Wow.
Just, wow. That was truly amazing. A Manny Walk-off dong!
Pardon me but I believe a big FUCK YEAH! is in order!
And as a bonus - I get to go to bed instead of staying up later. Saturdays I'm at the LL field at 6 AM, and that's not very far away.
GOD - what a freaking SHOT!
See ya Sunday
:)
Gotta love Manny standing there with his arms up after hitting that ball.
Yeah, that was great...
Sorry Canadian fans, I'm watchin on DirecTV tonight - gettin the raw, real feed!
I LOVE YOU MANNY!
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS:
9
I dunno, Laura, I think 2004 taketh away and 2004 giveth. The games may have shortened our lifespans, but I think the resultant joy gave it right back.
CHB today in his little chat on Manny's health: "wondering where the power has gone." Fuck you, moron.
i'm at work on sunday but apparently i should be able to watch on mlbtv (based on getting it at home tonight)
Well, now I can go to sleep, but now I too stoked! Well, guess I will try. Good night, everyone. Another fun night. Have fun at work, all you weekend workers. See you on Sunday afternoon.
Can you believe this?
Every single division series this year so far... 2 games to 0.
O christ - NESN has Rice on the post game with the Remdawg. Gaaah. Was hoping for Eck.
CHB today in his little chat on Manny's health: "wondering where the power has gone." Fuck you, moron.
what's that churchill line about the ugly woman who called him drunk? "in the morning, i'll be sober, but you'll still be ugly."
well, chb, manny got his power back, but you are still a moron.
Good (and I do mean GOOD) night, gang. I'll most likely not be game threading on Sunday, as we're working 12-5, but I'm taking the XM to work with me and subjecting everyone else to the game at 3. I'll miss you all.
Well worth the lost sleep, that's for sure. Thanks Manny!
Tom Caron - Daisuke a power nibbler. RSN would like to see less nibbling more power.
Amen brother, amen!
A freaking HUGE BLAST!
sean McAdam's first question to the Bot - Can you tell us what that flight to California will be like after this game ending like it did?
Bot - well, I plan on taking Ortiz's money and hopefully MBM will sit in and I'll take his paycheck also.
(paraphrasing all of this).
Bot - Got big daddy Schill going tomorrow so anybody would be happy with that!
There are dongs and then there are dongs!
There are some games where it doesn't feel nearly as good to win as it feels bad to lose. This isn't one of them.
Wow Wow Wow!!!
I have been a big fan of Manny for a long time, and I have always wanted to see him hit one out in that situation. I got it.
AGAINST K-ROD! IN THE POSTSEASON!! AND IT WAS A NO-DOUBTER!!!
Oh, the complete joy.
Manny told WRKO's Glenn Geffner, "I'm a baaad man."
Nice of Manny to atone for some iffy plays in LF!
Also, thanks to everyone who spent their evening here. I really appreciate it.
Anyone else thinking we might get another blast of schadenfreude very soon? :>)
Manny told WRKO's Glenn Geffner, "I'm a baaad man."
Manny, July 31, 2005: "I'm Here To Win. I'm A Gangster."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
TBS just showed instances of the bugs descending on Cleveland in seasons past...same thing happened in 1994 and Albert Belle lit up a big fire in the dugout to smoke 'em out. All the players were howlin' and the ump was heading over to give em shit...
It just looked hilarious. Something Millar would do ;-)
Anyone else thinking we might get another blast of schadenfreude very soon? :>)
#29.
A continuing series.
Oh, uh, "meg" was me (she's the fiancee).
Manny: 1 home run behind Bernie Williams for the most home runs all-time in the postseason. #21 tonight.
manny was spoke at the press conference. he said the cutest/greatest things. love that guy :))
devine: oh. thought we had a new member. rats!
Gotta look for the Manny vid tomorrow.
A continuing series.
More accurately, a never-ending series.
Off to bed for real. Up to post smile-inducing tabloids in the morn.
John Kruk made a good point just now about Dice: "He can't throw 18 [different] pitches and expect to control them all. Just throw 3 pitches for strikes and go from there."
MBM's first walk off home run! Could not have come at a better time!!!
I dont know if anyone wrote this or not, but that was MBM's first ever walkoff Hr as a red sox.......
I don't think the phrases "John Kruk" and "made a good point" can co-exist in the same sentence.
gammons just pronounced 'chone' as 'chown' (aka the proper way)
awesome.
gammons - chown
get the f out of here! really?
alright, keep posting all you want, i'll put 'em thru in the daylight.
nite!
On the Yankee game how does Joe Toree let Mariano Rivera pitch 2 innings but have those 2 innings be when they are tied, why did he not bring him in the eighth or at least with two outs in the 8th, he wasnt even warming up.a lot of conifidence in a rookie vs the greatest postseason closer ever....
My hats off to Delcarmen he looked real good...
gammons - chown
get the f out of here! really?
haha yep. it may have been a mistake..but. yah, it was so cool.
One last thing before I retire:
Halos Heaven is filled with douchebags. I don't think I've ever seen the Sox or its fanbase trash the Angels yet they find it necessary to trash not only the Sox, but the Nation and New Englanders. Fuck you LA. I respect the Angels but despise your city's people. You're like NYC but more pretentious.
Here we go Red Sox!
Here we go!
Clap! Clap! Clap!
I dont know if anyone wrote this or not, but that was MBM's first ever walkoff Hr as a red sox.......
I had no idea, but I told my dad as I was watching this all play out that I don't ever remember a Manny walk-off. Doesn't surprise me.
At Ace's bar in San Francisco:
I rushed there after work and saw a couple of the extra innings. I'm pally with some of the Yankee fans. Do you think they put in Vizcaino, I asked? Had to be. They were nervous. He's good, then he's bad.
Hafner was just the wrong guy for them to have up at that point. It happened, and I didn't give shit. I don't like to receive it, so I didn't give it. A tough loss, I said. Though it would have been for the...for Cleveland, too, considering all the chances they had. That shit with the bugs was just crazy. But they gave it up. Yankees lose.
Dice-K is struggling a bit. I miss the 3rd LAA run. Hours later, it seems, we get the run back. The Yankee fans are gone and it becomes just a few Sox fans and a regular Friday night crowd. The sound is off. I don't understand why it is that Coco's out off of second until someone explains it to me.
But I hang in there. The bullpen does their thing. My English friend arrives. I'm explaining to him the difference between a starting pitcher and a relief pitcher. Papelbon is doing his badass grimace and I'm trying to explain the special role of a closer. It seems like we have been tied at 3 forever.
I am re-explaining the difference between a strike and a ball and what a foul ball means. As they're giving Papi the IBB he says, "So they keep pitching him foul balls?" I explain some more. I'm finally able to focus.
It Happens. I jump for joy. My brother calls. I jaw for a little and hand the phone to my English friend. When it's handed back to me my brother says, "Robert says you jumped up in front of the TV and screamed, 'Fuck you!'"
I realize this is true.
Manny. My man. I keep re-creating his swing and triumph. I get home and keep doing so for my wife. She tries to be happy for me.
2-0, my friends.
2-0.
My first live playoff win!
2-0, 0-2. Sweeeeeeet! Enjoy your off-Saturday, everybody.
Joba, baby. Joba.
That was a MAN DONG, man.
Despite how tired I was last night, I couldn't sleep, thinking about the game, Manny's HR, the series, etc. I also did not know that was Manny's first walkoff. Wow, that's amazing. Guess Ortiz always beat him to it! No wonder Manny talked to the press. I can't wait to see the clip of his press conference.
Zen, I loved your story! How much fun it must be to try and explain baseball to a newcomer.
Jere, can't believe you were there. Fenway must have been nuts after Manny's HR. Glad part of Joy Nation got to be there.
Don't know if Manny really needed to say that he's one of the best players in the game. But -- maybe that's why he doesn't talk to the media.
Don't know if Manny really needed to say that he's one of the best players in the game. But -- maybe that's why he doesn't talk to the media.
He also acknowledged that he's had a lot of problems with his swing this year.
But it was awesome when he said he's a bad man.
I respect the Angels but despise your city's people. You're like NYC but more pretentious.
Anaheim is NOTHING like NYC. It's suburban, Republican, and conformist.
L.A. and Anaheim are two totally different places. L.A. is also nothing like NYC, but Anaheim and Orange County are about as far from NYC as you can get. These are the people who put Ronald Reagan on the political map.
Hmmmm...why would I not be surprised it'd be the rich CA residents that occupy those areas. Then again I have no intention of going to CA at all and if Anaheim is like Orange County, no way on God's green Earth will I set foot there. I can handle New England rich people, but CA rich Republicans (esp. their kids who are a laugh riot/rage target) are up there in people I don't like.
"Don't know if Manny really needed to say that he's one of the best players in the game. "
He did say it right after saying that K-Rod is one of the best pitchers in the game--like, he said that, and then added the fact that he was able to beat the best pitcher only because he's one of the best hitters. I was just happy to hear Manny speak. I love that guy. About walk-off homers--ESPN said (so it MUST be true...) that this was Manny's first walkoff homer since 1996. He's had walkoff hits with the Sox--I was at a 14-inning game vs. Houston where he ended it, just not with a home run.
". I respect the Angels but despise your city's [NYC] people."
Adding to everything L said, keep in mind plenty of the people you despise in NYC are Sox fans, or Mets fans, who all just happen to hate the Yankees as a bonus. I also feel like people not familiar with New York (and I apologize to Colin if he is) don't realize just how massive and diverse the place is. If you "despise" a person who's a Russian immigrant in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, as well as a 20-something white-boy lawyer from the Upper West Side, fine, but what does it have to do with them technically living in the same city, even though neither will ever go anywhere near the other's neighborhood?
And if you judge it by a Yankee Stadium crowd, those aren't New Yorkers anyway, just rich businessmen from Westchester and Fairfield. Don't get me wrong, there's a certain "type" of Yankee fan I despise, but it doesn't reflect on the whole city of New York, at least to me, having lived there and been near there for many years.
Also, LA sucks! (Okay, see, now I'm learning a lesson that there probably are cool sections/people within all cities...)
705! My laptop screen is freaking out again so I didn't join up here while watching the game last night.
I had to hit the mall-world earlier yesterday. We were running late--everywhere I went people were talking about 8:30. I was in Best Buy when my MFY-lovin' friend calls me up to ask if I'm watching the game. Head on over to the TV section and find two big-ass (really--could fit a couple in there) leather armchairs in front of a big wide-screen TV and catch gnats on the neck of the Hutt. Watched 2 half innings and drove home trying to catch the sox on the radio amidst the static until I could watch the game on my crappy ol TV at home.
I love that IBBing Tiz didn't pay off. Manny killed that thing.
rock! I think my votes on the length of both series was off and all the better.
see you all later.
To Jere, my comment wasn't directed at NYC. It was directed at LA, a place where almost everyone I've met from there I've really not liked.
doh! I didn't look when I left comment 705 above and someone else's account was open on this computer. for the record for this one post "jennifer" is "nick". In normal situations that is not true; I am my own person (within societal boundaries).
To Jere, my comment wasn't directed at NYC. It was directed at LA, a place where almost everyone I've met from there I've really not liked.
You did say LA is "like NYC but more pretentious".
There are two mistakes there.
1. The Angels, despite their current name, do not play in LA. They play in Anaheim.
2. LA and Anaheim are very different places, and neither of them are like NYC.
