Manny Being Mummy

ALSO: Clev-NY Game 4 thread.

Pat Borzi, New York Times:
Unlike his game-winner Friday night in Boston, when Napoli left the area of the plate before he did, Ramírez admired this briefly. He flipped the bat, stuck his arms in front of him and walked toward first base.

"Manny did the Mummy a little too long," Crisp said of Ramírez's monster-like pose. "But it was cool."

I just thought it was funny how Ortiz hit his dong, took a walking step, and then you see him kind of realize, "oh, right, the Weaver thing," and then immediately start running to first. Then Manny comes up, hits an even bigger dong, and goes, "this guy doesn't like walkin', eh? I'll show him walkin'."

So maybe Weaver "won't forget" that, and serve up another meatball to Manny next time like he did with Papi!

Let's just say the Yankees win the ALDS and play the Red Sox. We won't be seeing Roger Clemens in the ALCS.

From Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News:

"The Yankees also replaced Roger Clemens (left hamstring) on the roster with Ron Villone, which means Clemens won’t be eligible for the ALCS if the Yankees win the next two games. This is a new rule that MLB instituted this season, and I think it’s a great one."

Rob said...

Oops.

Kathy was me. I guess I didn't logout of my mother's account. My bad.

Zenslinger said...

I don't think we're going to be seeing Clemens again, period. Except for TV commercials.

I was a little down on seeing the Manny snip of a quote that he was one of the best hitters. But it made a bit more sense in context. As for celebrating at the plate, isn't it hard to be humble at a moment like that? I was jumping around like a jackass and I didn't even hit the dong. If he had done it again so blatantly yesterday, it wouldn't have been as appropriate. Or would have been more innappropriate. But, fuck it.

Zenslinger said...

Whether or not Joe Torre has a job next year, I think he should win an award for Damning with Faint Praise. According to mlb.com on Fat Billy's replacement on the roster:

"I think the fact that he has a little experience," said Yankees manager Joe Torre, referring to Villone, "we know he's going to come in and not try to be something he isn't."

I realize this isn't the proper thread for this comment, but the quote certainly tickled me. And if the Yanks do make it to the ALCS, their starting pitching is going to be that much thinner with FB in there. And seeing as they'll have to go 5 games, it'll be that much more tired as well.

lets go byrd, pitch the game f yr life

Zenslinger said...

Wow. Leadoff dong for Grady Sizemore. I wonder how short a leash Torre will use? Of course, Wang could settle down and pitch well yet, but HRs are a bad sign off of him.

allan said...

okay -- clev game thread here, i guess.

just tuned in -- missed grady dongmore!

byrd is the word.

allan said...

hafner singles, now at second with 2 outs

allan said...

brak brak with the rbi single to rcf as the mfy fans stand for a K. not yet, mfers. 2-0.

s1c said...

Brak Brak!!!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Why is Peralta "brak-brak?"

Rob said...

Shoppach catching with Martinez playing first tonight.

Amy said...

LOL, Ish, I wondered who Kathy was!

allan said...

As for celebrating at the plate, isn't it hard to be humble at a moment like that?

Pitchers are praised for acting like this -- Pap, Beckett, Joba, even Pettitte the other day -- but hitters are damned. Makes no sense.

Zenslinger said...

Does anyone want to see the Yanks in the ALCS? Some do. One RS fan told me he didn't think it would feel that great to win the WS without beating them. To me, that's getting way ahead of ourselves, but still. I don't so much fear them in a baseball sense. But the possibility of losing to them...ugh.

Rob said...

Byrd: 9-3 after Indians loss.

allan said...

yup ish -- better than cc or carmona.

Amy said...

For me, a series with the Yankees would be pure hell. But I just want the Sox to win the ALCS so whatever comes down the pike....

Amy said...

Damon out. Good.

Zenslinger said...

Pitchers are praised for acting like this -- Pap, Beckett, Joba, even Pettitte the other day -- but hitters are damned. Makes no sense.

Good point.

brak-brak

It's what his dog says. See the Glossary.

Rob said...

I've said this before: The Red Sox are the better team this year. Their record dictates that. Yet, a lot of people still feel like the Yankees are their Daddy.

Let's put it this way for 2007: The Yankees have to go through the Red Sox. Not the other way around.

allan said...

One RS fan told me he didn't think it would feel that great to win the WS without beating them.

We did that already, we don't need to do it every time we win a title.

It would be extra good, though, like 12 instead of 11 on a scale of 1-10.

I want Cleveland to celebrate on MFY soil in front of those chokers -- so DO IT TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

It's what his dog says.

dgo.

Rob said...

2 on, 1 out for A-Rod.

If this is going to be a slug-fest, then let it be a slug-fest.

But, let's not and say we did. A DP would be nice right here.

allan said...

Slappy's last 54 postseason AB: 0 RBI.

0!!!

allan said...

K up and in!!!!!

Rob said...

WOW. That was a BIG pitch right there. This is what I'm talking about with Byrd. He's going to give up hits, but he's not going to walk guys. He's going to be around the plate and he'll keep you off-balance.

thatdietcokegirl said...

about not wanting/wanting to meet the yanks.
i personally, want to see the tide turn for a long long while when it comes to redsox/yankees. it's already turning/turned, but i think it would mean alot if the red sox could beat the yankees decisively in an alcs. we already won the division for the first time in ages, wouldn't it be nice to pwn them in the playoffs as well?

allan said...

kenny being coco!

Rob said...

Good catch by Lofton. He had a terrible break on this ball but was able to recover nicely.

Rob said...

Sure, but that implies that the Red Sox still need validation. The Red Sox and Yankees have so many similar statistics and characteristics that every head-to-head game is unlike anything you ever see in baseball. That's why some people like it. That's why others don't. You put the Yankees head-to-head with the Angels and it's advantage-Angels.

And here's this for a way to look at it. Let's assume the Indians win tonight.

The Cleveland Indians beat the New York Yankees. The Red Sox then beat the Indians in the ALCS, you're not beating the Yankees... you're doing one better: You're beating the team that beat the Yankees.

allan said...

2 singles to start the clev 2nd. 1st and 2nd no outs!!!

allan said...

nice to see jetes not even try for that grounder. just kind of wave hello at it.

allan said...

MUSSINA up in pen!!!!!!

allan said...

nice replay there - clearly hit the bat

s1c said...

nice to see jetes not even try for that grounder. just kind of wave hello at it.

It was an intangible out don't you know!

Rob said...

That was a FANTASTIC call by the umpires. Looking at this one angle, Shoppach was backing away from the pitch as it hit him on the hand. Wow.

allan said...

but it goes as an HBP - loaded with no outs!!!!!!

allan said...

HOLY SHIT! Torre pulls Wang

stunned by this early call.

Rob said...

I think it hit bat and finger. I don't know.

And that's going to do it for WANG!

Wow.

1.0+ IP for Wang. Can you believe it? I thought I'd never see a 2-0 deficit and a pitcher leave the game without an injury or specific pitch count. Wow.

The thing with Shoppach... If it hit his hand squarely, it would not have ricocheted so violently to his right like that.

allan said...

32 pitches for Wang.

1+ IP, 5 hits and 2 runs so far

allan said...

torre has done this before in must wins -- like 2003 game 7 with fbfo -- but this seems early even on that scale.

can moose adjust?

thatdietcokegirl said...

wow maybe it's not some bullshit stunt by steinbrenner to light a fire under his team's ass. maybe torre really will be fired if they don't win. he's not taking any chances at all if he thinks his starters don't have it.

Rob said...

I kept thinking they were going to start Mussina anyways. Seemed like the logical move to me, seeing as not only does he have more than full rest, but he also pitched pretty decently down the stretch.

allan said...

top of the order for some moose abuse.

allan said...

he's not taking any chances at all if he thinks his starters don't have it.

that's it, exactly. gutsy call.

allan said...

torre pulled brown early in 2004 game 7 too.

gidp, runs scores, 3-0

allan said...

watching on mute (l is reading a book), any odd news about wang? or was torre just putting his ass on the line with this move?

allan said...

4-0!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

asDRUBal with the ribeye

Joe Grav said...

Nice.

Joe Grav said...

HR please

s1c said...

I haven't heard anything about Wang or anything. Looks to me like for the second straight game this guy could not answer the call.

allan said...

already seeing camera shots of depressed mfy fans in the stands!!!

now THIS is one time i like seeing the crowd.

Rob said...

watching on mute (l is reading a book), any odd news about wang? or was torre just putting his ass on the line with this move?

Nothing about Wang. Torre had just seen enough.

Torre also said before the game that even Andy Pettitte would be available. You have to believe that wouldn't be the case now because he'd need to pitch Wednesday.

Do you pitch Pettitte if you need some help tonight? Maybe an inning?

Remember now, Byrd has had a long wait, and that 4-0 lead isn't as big as it looks. Byrd's got to come out with his bullets and craft his way through this lineup.

Come on, Old School!

Rob said...

Now Matsui says he hit Shoppach's glove and wants Interference.

s1c said...

Those Red Sox players (or ex Sox) players always get the call!!!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Just read the glossary re brak-brak. Hilarious. Glossary has been updated quite a bit since the last time I looked at it.

Amy said...

Oh, let's not walk them. Come on Byrd.

allan said...

don't rain too hard.

that was a swing by malphabet you fat blue fuck.

s1c said...

Time for CI to make an out.

allan said...

Three Dicks on the pond for CI.

Clutch?

s1c said...

Well, that saved at least 1 run, maybe two.

allan said...

fooking blake.

LHP laffey up for clev

s1c said...

ABOUT FRAGGING TIME! More runs please Cle.

Good morning, good afternoon, GOOD NIGHT A-ROD.

Backwards K!

Ofer said...

Got here a bit late, and I see I've missed some fun.

Note to the MFY of the future: CMW- not a big-game pitcher.

Amy said...

Go, Kelley!

s1c said...

Amy - recheck the sweep comments. Left you a note. Switching back and forth between MNF and the game.

Cle. needs to get some runs here!

allan said...

so billy is off the alcs roster.

he must be really scared of facing the sox. he's taking NO chances.

Amy said...

OK, S1C, will do.

Amy said...

Yes, I know about the law blogosphere. I just prefer the baseball one! Thanks, S1C.

Rob said...

YES!

VICTOR with the double ribby!

s1c said...

6-0. Woo Woo. Not like 2003 is it Moose!

Amy said...

YES! More runs for CLE!!

allan said...

2-run single to left for vmart - running on duh noodle.

6-1.

Amy said...

So do we think Clemens will finally REALLY retire?? Enough already.

Rob said...

he must be really scared of facing the sox. he's taking NO chances.

I didn't know this, but there's a new rule this year that says you can remove a guy from the postseason roster, replace him with someone else, but he's out of the next series.

Clemens out. Villone in. No LCS for the Clemens.

allan said...

might be time for those mfy fans to beat the traffic.

Amy said...

With the Yankees, I don't relax til the last out. Remember that nasty Friday night game in September?

Rob said...

Suzyn Waldman: Paul Byrd is still in there.

This is true. Cause apparently he can only pitch 3 innings, so this is bonus for him, huh Snooze?

allan said...

i thought only CI could chase popups like that. ???

allan said...

CI L5.

:>)

Rob said...

I think we have a new Houdini out there.

Unknown said...

I'm nervous. Byrd really isn't pitching all that well. There have been, what, 9 baserunners through 4 innings? That's a WHIP of like, 2-point-something, and he's thrown some scary pitches to some scary batters, and gotten away clean.

Let's hope Wedge is quick with Perez and Betancourt.

allan said...

Suzyn Waldman: Paul Byrd is still in there.

Cleveland: Our starters go more than 1 inning.

Unknown said...

Oh, and if any of you go to Over The Monster, or just like anyone who has anything to do with the Red Sox, Randy Booth (one of their main writers) is up for some scolarship. Might as well go vote:

http://overthemonster.com/story/2007/10/8/103644/260#commenttop

Unknown said...

Did anyone listen to game 2 on Yankees radio? Waldman was terrible. She kept going on about how the bugs weren't hurting Joba's concentration, but his vision. After Joba walked Sizemore on four straight pitches, she said "if it wasn't for the bugs, he would have almost certainly been normal Joba and struck him out.

I mean, no one would ever almost certainly strike out anyone. Come on now.

allan said...

OTM link here.

allan said...

I'd take Bush talking politics more seriously than Waldman talking baseball. Almost.

Unknown said...

Thanks. I'm not any good with the HTML stuff. By the way, how silly is this New York crowd? They started out giving A-Rod an M-V-P chant, then they boo'd him last at bat, and this at bat they gave him a big cheer after getting a hit. What the hell?

s1c said...

How did A-rod get on base?

stefan said...

I listened to waldman and sterling on friday while I happened to be driving into new york, and I can honestly say I've never heard worse baseball radio coverage. Just horrible. Uninformative, ass-kissing hackery.

Amy said...

Wow, ARod got a hit....BFD

allan said...

Some MFY fans are no doubt saying "Sure, he gets a hit now that the game is out of rea-- ... uhh, never mind."

allan said...

Slappy - ground single though the 5.5 hole.

Amy said...

Note: I used a cyberacronym. Hope you are all impressed. :)

Rob said...

Should the score hold up, I'll be taping the 9th inning and the highlights from the Yankees radio. Down in flames. It's as much of an important memory as the Red Sox games.

Unknown said...

I was hoping that A-Rod would go hitless in this game so we could save a couple million next year when we go out and sign the best player in baseball.

Amy said...

Here's where I start getting conflicted. I am hoping CLE has a good bullpen, but then I think---next week, I will hope they have a terrible bullpen. Sports is so confusing for one who likes to be consistent.

allan said...

Laura says she is impressed!

Rob said...

Indians starts so far this series: 24 IP

MFY: 14.1

Amy said...

LOL! Keep reading your book, Laura. Allan will keep you updated on all the big doings here!

allan said...

nice moose!!!!!!!! tool.

allan said...

She finished the book and is watching, but is taking a break from the computer.

(You also know LOL, I see.)

allan said...

Sports is so confusing for one who likes to be consistent.

Now: Yankees lose (who cares who wins).

Friday: Cleveland loses.

Simple.

Unknown said...

Big ovation for Mussina. He didn't pitch very well. I swear to God, Yankees fans have rocks in their heads.

Amy said...

I actually am pretty good at IM talk from years of doing it (since 1998 when daughter number one went to college). I just never saw STFU. I figure I should be glad my kids never said that to me. But for the normal stuff like TTYL, BRB, LOL, BTW, TTFN, etc., I am quite the pro.

allan said...

Villone in.

Rob said...

Glad to know Clemens still knows how to eat sunflower seeds like a Big Leaguer.

SoSock said...

I'd take Bush talking politics more seriously than Waldman talking baseball. Almost.
I'm glad you added the "almost"
That's still HARSH! :)

allan said...

TCM looks clean shaven -- all ready for the series-ending press conference.

Amy said...

Yeah, I get the big picture, of course. It's the little things --- like do I want Byrd to be a good pitcher? Am I glad that Hafner gets a hit? Tonight, yes. Next week, no. I like to keep my foes my foes and my friends my friends.

But yes, right now, go CLEVELAND.

Unknown said...

Is Ron Villone's entry music really "It's My Life" by Bon Jovi? And after all of the Bon Jovi coverage there's been so far, they couldn't cut to his reaction when that came on the speakers? For some reason I'd think it'd be pretty funny.

Unknown said...

And now Yankee stadium is chanting "Paul O'Neil?" Their season is nine outs away from ending! What the hell is going through their heads?

s1c said...

Chris Berman is wishing all of you Canucks a happy t-giving.

Fragging Cowboys.

allan said...

Damon catches the thir dout and turns and tosses the ball into the stands. I wonder if he's worried the throw might not reach the fans.

Amy said...

12 outs, James. Wishful thinking?

allan said...

I am giving thanks --- that I did not hear Berman's voice today.

Rob said...

And now Yankee stadium is chanting "Paul O'Neil?" Their season is nine outs away from ending! What the hell is going through their heads?

Really? I was wondering who that was they were chanting. For some reason, I was thinking Ronaldinho. The soccer player for Brazil?

Not so sure I know what's going through my head, but it ain't bad.

Rob said...

Damon catches the third out and turns and tosses the ball into the stands. I wonder if he's worried the throw might not reach the fans.

Last night he threw one into the stands and he either didn't throw it far enough or a fan dropped it, because it fell back on the grass.

allan said...

i don't like cheering for the whaoos either. but i will cheer when bad things happen to the yankees.

Unknown said...

Ha.

9 outs. Because Borowski is AUTOMATIC!

Rob said...

Robbie Cano, dontcha know? Don'tcha know you're still down by FOUR?

allan said...

canoe dong.

6-2

Unknown said...

Damnit! They have two great bullpen guys, and two pretty good ones. Why the HELL do you let Byrd give up a homerun?

Amy said...

Is it time for Byrd to come out?

allan said...

yeesh - nice sign

torre must
bring boss
shiny ring

Rob said...

Paul Byrd wasn't terrific tonight, but he might as well been. He limited the Yankees to two runs. He was Houdini tonight and he definitely deserves this win.

It's now time to do some advance scouting on the Indians bullpen.

Amy said...

Ahh, got it, James. I figured you were pushing us an inning ahead.

allan said...

byrd was way better than most thought he'd be.

don't fuck this up, wedge. manage like tito!

FUCK YOU BON JOVI DOOCHE.

Amy said...

Is Perez good? I really don't know much about Cleveland.

Unknown said...

The announcer said Paul Byrd was "absolutely spectacular."

10 baserunners through 5 innings is absolutely not spectacular. 2 strikeouts is not absolutely spectacular. Hell, 2 runs through 5 innings is pretty good, but nothing special.

And now a fucking Bon Jovi interview.

allan said...

PEREZ:

1.78 ERA in 44 games.

41 hits and 15 bb in 60.2 IP - 62 K

Unknown said...

I was pushing us an inning ahead. Borowski is anything but automatic. He's awful.

Just a bad joke.

Amy said...

I am watching on GDGD. What the hell is the Bon Jovi connection? He's from New Jersey!

Unknown said...

Perez is very, very good. 62 strikeouts in 60 innings. Only 15 walks. ERA under 2. Rafael Betancourt is better, but Perez is very good.

allan said...

borowski had a lower ERA+ (87) than byrd (96). huh.

Amy said...

Good stats on Perez. Hope he lives up to them...tonight. Not next week.

Unknown said...

Joe Borowski blew a 4 run lead heading into the ninth against the Yankees earlier this year.

Eric Wedge is not a good manager.

allan said...

i guess versus expectation, he was spectacular.

"he's real and he's spectacular!"

Fox is doing the ALCS right? How will McCarver survive without being able to kiss CI's butt.

Joe Grav said...

I bet McCarver excuses himself due to 'illness'

Or he just talks about the value of like, Alex Cora the whole time

allan said...

How will McCarver survive without being able to kiss CI's butt.

He'll just spend 90 minutes every night talking about how odd it is to have no CI in the post-season.

Didn't he say something like this in 05 or 06?

Like: "They shouldn't even have the playoffs if Derek Jeter isn't here?"

I'm serious.

allan said...

I wonder if FJM knows anything about that.

Also, Rob Neyer's best line, in an ESPN chat: "Tim McCarver would have Derek Jeter's babies if he could."

Unknown said...

Let's be glad TBS won't be doing many more games. The announcing hasn't been particularly terrible. But they've missed pitches, had terrible angles on plays, and have been terrible at live editing (especially with respect to sound). Although this may all be preferable to Tim McCarver.

allan said...

October 25, 2003, JoS mentions Neyer quip.

Amy said...

Who is FJM?

Unknown said...

FJM = Fire Joe Morgan

About as funny as the internet gets.

allan said...

Fire Joe Morgan - a great blog that points out the rampant stupidity in the sports media.

all hail ken tremendous!!!!

allan said...

here comes the 2 hour gba.

Unknown said...

Is this how God Bless America always goes?

Amy said...

Thanks, I have heard about the blog here, haven't had a chance to check it out. Though I agree with the sentiment of the title (though I actually find Jon Miller more annoying).

allan said...

seriously, the way they break down sports columns -- and especially morgan's espn chats -- actually quite educational.

s1c said...

Well, I stayed with them through 4 fragging interceptions. Stupid comments like "this cowboy passing attack is just not in sync" (geez, 4 INTs and you think it is just not in sync!), but a freaking kick off return for a TD is just more than I can handle. fragging cowboys.

Go CLEVELAND!!!

allan said...

FJM is an absolute must read. Most of the people are also Sox fans, though they don't make a big deal about it.

They are also obsessed with the media's love for Eckstein. OBSESSED!!!!

Amy said...

Ok, I am adding FJM to my must read list. Thanks for the tip.

Rob said...

I've not minded TBS's coverage so far, except for this series. I like this broadcasting team, but man! This feels a lot like watching a Yankee game on YES right now.

allan said...

Check it out for sure.

Just a aside: Laura doesn't like the overall tone, but I think it is great. I'm sure you'll see why.

Like someone asks Morgan who he thinks will win the WS. And he says I don't know, then rambles on and ends up listing all 8 teams.

Unknown said...

That was an absurd pitch. No lefty hits that pitch, ever. Jesus. Abreu must have thought that was going to hit him.

allan said...

Here it is:

READER
Peter, Lawrenceville GA: Mr, Morgan in your opinion what two teams will clash in the AL for the title? and why?

JOE
That's a very difficult question. No matter what we think we still have to play the game. There could be an error or mistake that changes entire situation. Every team going in has a lot of ''ifs.'' Cleveland can win if Carmona and Sabathia pitch well. Boston can win if Manny swings the bat like he can. Anaheim can win if Guerrero is healthy. New York can win if Wang pitches well. I think the Indians and Yankees are a toss up. If Vlady's not healthy then I give the edge there to Boston. We'll just have to see who comes through.

FJM
Joe's Fearless AL Champion Predictions:
1. Well, hang on -- that's a difficult question
2. And you understand -- whoever I predict for the Championship, that is not binding. They have to go ahead and play the contests, the actual baseball "games." You understand that, right?
3. I would also like to point out that within those games, the favorite doesn't always win. That's a common misconception about sports, that the team that is "favored" always wins. On the contrary -- there could be an error or mistake that changes entire situation!
4. Now. All that being said, here is my prediction for AL Champ:
5. Cleveland, Boston, Anaheim, or New York.

Unknown said...

What the fuck is this "most villified player" shit this chump keeps talking about?

Amy said...

I can see Morgan doing that! He does blather on saying nothing. But I find Jon Miller just much too in love with the Yankees. My husband says he is pro-Red Sox. Guess it's all in what you hear.

allan said...

YEAH - hit a dong in your final AB of the season and tell NYC to fuck off.

Unknown said...

This Alex Rodriguez fellow is pretty good at baseballing.

s1c said...

Hmmm, CI - .188 in this series
A-Rod - .231 well higher now that he hit an A-Bomb by A-Rod.

Yep, Its A-rod's fault that they are losing this series.

Amy said...

Shit, I hate ARod,

Unknown said...

Jon Miller used to broadcast Sox games on the radio. He was great, too, from what I've heard.

SoSock said...

Checked out FJM - interesting
Kinda fun, but no JoS !
Perez doing his Bot impersonation with the stare. 7 to go.
Lastly - I did NOT care for the TBS announcers that did the Boston games - thought they were dull and seemed like they were trying to figure it out along with their audience

Joe Grav said...
