WS 4: Red Sox 4, Rockies 3

The Red Sox lineup remains the same:
Red Sox Rockies
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF Kazuo Matsui, 2B
Dustin Pedroia, 2B Troy Tulowitzki, SS
David Ortiz, 1B Matt Holiday, LF
Manny Ramirez, LF Todd Helton, 1B
Mike Lowell, 3B Garrett Atkins, 3B
J.D. Drew, RF Ryan Spilborghs, CF
Jason Varitek, C Brad Hawpe, RF
Julio Lugo, SS Yorvit Torrealba, C
Jon Lester, P Aaron Cook, P
***

Jon Lester / Aaron Cook

If you are worried about Lester starting -- though at this point, why are you worried about anything -- consider that Colorado is pinning its post-season hopes on a guy who has not pitched in a game since August 10.

I was about to post three words, but Jeff beat me to it.

I hope by now everyone knows there is nothing to worry about. 27 outs to go!

I, too, immediately thought of Alfred E. Neuman.

2004: WWWLLLWWWWWWWW
2007: WWWWLLLWWWWWW_

Let's complete the pattern.

Last night was the first time in World Series history that a team had two rookies batting 1-2.

Last night was awesome. I'll have the laptop out tonight for Game 4. From LBJ's first at-bat to ending the night with the Papel-Jig, can't wait!

Love the smell of C-Day in the morning! (fuck it, it's my morning! just woke up)

Thank goodness we get a US Fox feed from Buffalo.

Because in about 20 seconds after the final out, Rogers Sportsnet would go straight to hockey highlights.

The way things are going, anyone else fancy a Jon Lester shutout?

allan said...

Could Ellsbury actualy win a World Series MVP and still be eligible for the Rookie of the Year award next year?

He has:

.417 avg - 2nd behind Drew
.500 OBP - 3rd behind Drew and Lugo; tied with Lowell
.667 SLG - leads team
5 hits - tied for the team lead
3 doubles - tied for the team lead
3 runs - 1 behind Tiz and Lowell
3 RBI - 1 behind Pedroia and Tek
2 BB - 1 behind Yook, Lowell, Lugo
1 stolen base - tied for team lead with Lowell (!)

a big game tonight -- and not letting beckett pitch again -- might do it.

Hi guys
My ego is shattered! My sense of self-worth decimated! I am not needed.
(how DO you denote toungue-in-cheek on a text site?)
I had on the wrong hat! I opened the bottle before double digits! And yet they WON! WITHOUT MY HELP!

I had started on the wine with dinner earlier, so I figured there was no need to wait on that, although I did let the glass sit empty until we scored our 1st run.

I didn't realize I had left the white Fenway Park hat, which I switched to after LCS4, in the truck until Bob said -"where's the white hat?" I started to go get it immediately but it was pouring rain here, my truck is half way across the yard, and we were just getting started on the big 3rd inning.
So I waited. I did start to go get it after the New Year's home run, but it was an awful tense moment to leave the action. And by the time Oki got out of it, the aforementioned bottle was making me feel like just sitting and smiling...and chatting :)
Oh, wait! The shirt! That's it! We didn't score till after I changed shirts at the end of the 2nd inning! That's actually when Bob asked me about the hat!
My life has been validated.......

Whoever thought we'd see two world series championships in four years -- and they would (likely) both be sweeps?!?!?!?

SoSock said...

Ells for MVP?

I think you're last line might be the key. If Beckett has to seal the deal tomorrow, which he would if necessary, I think he gets it.

If we win tonight and LBJ keeps up the pace, barring some monster heroics from another spot, who knows? It could happen.

tim said...

I know they used to be...but that was before they realized they could make a buck on the Lord's day :P

SoSock said...

Cap'n - from last night

"We have to continue to stay focused," catcher Jason Varitek said. "We have to try and outplay our opponent."

Ian Browne -
"Keep in mind that Varitek uttered that precise statement after Game 4 of the ALCS, when the Red Sox were in a 3-1 hole and their season was on the brink. It is that tunnel vision -- as much as anything -- that has gotten the Red Sox to this point."

Nice

I don't see Ellsbury being named MVP unless he was THE SHOW. They'll feel they need to give it to a veteran (or Pedroia)... Look at Manny's stats in 2004 and he was named MVP. Judging from his World Series performance, does it make sense, Manny being named MVP?

I have a feeling there will be co-MVPs this year. Unless, of course, Beckett gets another start tomorrow.

We're in the best position right now, because even if the Sox lose today, Beckett goes tomorrow and can go 5-0 this postseason.

andy said...

Who other than the Rookies can really be considered for MVP. Beckett was not an old Vet when he won the MVP. Who picks the MVP anyways? The sportswriters are all a flutter over the rookies. The way all the past steroids rumors are flying around baseball it would probably be beneficial for a rookie to get the MVP especially when they actually deserve it. I say so far it is a Co-MVP Pedroia and Ellsbury.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

If Drew or Lowell has a monster game and Ellsbury has a quiet one, I could see one of those guys getting MVP. Or Ortizzle, if he has a huge game.

Zenslinger said...

The MVP discussion is interesting. All good points that were made. It will be hard to deny Beckett if he gets another start and is equally as good, but otherwise, it seems to be Ellsbury as much as anyone else. But I didn't think of the co-MVP idea...LBJ/Dustin (who pounded the first nail)?

tim said...

yeah, i could def. see lowell getting it if he has a huge game. other than that, i think ellsbury/pedroia would be great.

look at us! game 4 of the world series and our discussion is debating whose the best MVP candidate! at this point, it would take a lot to make even the yookiest of people sweat!

nixon33 said...

yeah. i hope lowell gets it. thats just me.

SoSock said...

Useless, altho interesting fact -

Other than Seth Smith, who has 2 hits in 2 pinch-hit appearances, only 1 Col. batter has a higher W-S average than Dice-K !

laura k said...

LOL

Brilliant.

Some LCBOs are open in our area on Sunday, some are closed. But we have zero time between work and game - barely enough time to pour a glass of wine and turn on the TV! So the 'pagne (rhymes with gagne?) is already chillin'.

FY/LBJ co-MVPs sounds good to me! The youth movement. I don't think Beckett will win it, even if he pitches another game. He's already got his award, and we're cruising in this thing, his wins loom less large, if such a thing can be.

laura k said...

Me no want to eat cake before anyone's birthday, but looking forward to lots of cake!!!

Fun facts:

Pedroia has tied CI's 1996 record for the most postseason runs scored by a rookie (12). Dear FY: *Please* score at least once tonight.

Ellsbury are Arizona's Matt Williams are the only players with two doubles in the same inning in a World Series. Williams hit his in 2001 WS 6 against the Yankees.

The only other pairs of rookies to hit back-to-back in a lineup were:

Timo Perez (7th) and Jay Payton (8th) for the Mets in Game Five of the 2000 WS.

Jack Sheehan (2nd) and Bernie Neis (3rd) for Brooklyn in Game Six of the 1920 WS.

s1c said...

Drew will get the MVP after he goes 3-5 with a couple of dongs tonight. Just like in 2004 when the writers gave it to Manny, they are looking for the story.

In 2004 it was redemption, almost traded away to WS MVP.

In 2007 it is validation - reviled and nanciedize all year ON FIRE!!! proves his value.

Got the bubbly chilled and fully expect to be reaking it open around 12:30 tonight!!!!

laura k said...

Just like in 2004 when the writers gave it to Manny, they are looking for the story.

I think if they're looking for that kind of award, it would go to Lowell.

The trusty veteran on field and in clubhouse, over-performing beyond expectations, loved by all.

He has not been the MVP of the WS, but if it's mroe of a season achievement award, Lowell is the obvious choice, IMO.

Chris said...

I like the optimism, but you're scaring me a little ... it's not even two weeks since our boys ruined someone else's 3-1 party plans. Manny's right ...

allan said...

I like the optimism, but you're scaring me a little ...

Colorado could come back and win four in a row, I suppose. It could happen.

But what are Boston's chances of winning the series?

Cool Standings says 96.8%. BP says 96.4%.

I haven't popped any corks yet, but there is plenty of reason to be happy about the immediate future.

We may not win tonight, but I believe we will win the series.

The writers vote on it during the final game.

Tonight will be a night to enjoy baseball. Whether the Red Sox win or lose. And I keep saying this - if they lose, you go back out there Monday night with Josh Beckett and you go for it then.

That's what sitting pretty is all about! The Red Sox are very good at putting the losses behind them quickly and focusing on the next game.

In the channeling L-girl department:

Ron said...

I was lurking at a Rockies blog last night and a commenter called the Sox pitchers slimy after that pitch got away from Dice.

Say what? You see what you want to see though. Rockies fans are understandably frustrated with their team, but there was a lot of bitterness and vitriol.

It didn't diminish my enjoyment of the win, of course.

One other funny thing was that several commenters were disdainful about the white towels, "did we learn nothing from the Cleveland losses?"

s1c said...

So, here I am watching Sox Classics on NESN - 2004 LAD vs Bos its 1-1 bottom of the ninth and Damon is at third and Bellhorn at second with Papi coming up to bat. Hmmm, I wonder what happens. ;) (another MBM moment)

Of course to get myself in a proper mood for the 2nd (look theres gagne in the Pen) WS win in 4 years I decided to pull out my favorite Boston area composer. I really just love his symphony #60.

Of course if I really want to get fired up I would problably be listening to this oldie but goodie 666 by Aphrodites Child (Vangelis Papathanassiou), but it really is time to take MBM's words to heart, Tranquilo

Red Sox lose WS... only on Fox.

Wow. I'm not even gonna bother reading past the first couple lines in that piece of shit. If it was an actual piece of paper, it would serve a good use as TP.

s1c said...

Red Sox lose WS... only on Fox.

Actually I found it entertaining, its always good to read fantasy!!!

Remy - "Red Sox have just out classed the Rockie".

Rice - "Because of the good pitching". (in response to no answer for the Rockies).

Ah, I feel so good and mellow that even Jimmy Rice being on the Pre-game and Post games aren't even affecting me!!!

Tom Caron - there might be 5 or even 1/2 dozen teams in the AL better than the Rockies.

In other words the trio are just saying the Rockies suck bilge water.

Tranquilo!!

Zenslinger said...

I think the fantasy article is more of a revenue and ratings fantasy than a yearning for a great, nail-biting WS. After all, it was found on the Fox site.

Ofer said...

Heh, with all my worrying about finding a place to watch the game in Cincinnati, it never occured to me that I'll be staying at a hotel. It's the US... hotels have TVs.
And you know what that means: it means I can thread tonight, while the Sox are clinching!

I was gonna write something about who the WS MVP will be, since there's no clear front runner (everybody's been so good), but I see you already covered that.

OK, one hour and 27 outs to go.

Matsuzaka posted a 7.62 ERA for the month of September, he's toting around a 5.65 ERA this postseason, and he has only one quality start since August. Things certainly don't figure to get any better for him in Coors Field.

mmmmm..... wonder how that prediction worked out.

In the interest of fair reporting - (I know, something FOX is unfamiliar with)
he did end that article saying " It's not a matter of if, but rather when, the Red Sox win this series

chorus in the song i'm listening to:

But we had one foot on the gas and one foot in the grave
Everyone was laughing when we said we had it made

Everyone was laughing when we said we had it made - back in those days of the double digits lead. Well I'm SO FUCKING SORRY that I ENJOYED IT because my ENJOYMENT of said lead had NO BEARING on the team's performance! You wanna cringe at the thought of blowing it, fine, be an idiot. You wanna go through life thinking about the worst possible circumstances during the best times? Missing all opportunities to live in the moment, be happy and ENJOY the good times, then fine. Be a miserable prick your whole life. I'll enjoy it when my team does well, I'll cry about them shitting up a big lead if or when they DO IT. But you know what, these boys DIDNT EVER DO IT. No matter what McMoron or any of the mediots say. They lead the WHOLE SEASON, yeah, the lead at the end was less than it was during the year - but that was to be expected! And it's not like they "blew it" - they strategically used it (thanks to redsock for this part btw) to rest key cogs that have been instrumental in this run to the world series!!!

And now, with 9 innings separating the red sox from destiny - I would like to take this opportunity to laugh in the faces of all the pessimists who pissed away a fucking amazing summer in the sun, worrying about failure. Never happy until it's all said and done. Well, you know what, I was happy all fucking season, and when it is all said and done, I'll be just has happy as you! Probably happier because I've been riding this wave of happiness all season! That like, puts my happiness zen at volumes you couldn't IMAGINE! HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!

I am in southern Maine. WRKO is in Boston, and it's not a very powerful AM station. So what I've done is put my stereo outside with an AM antenna I recently made. This is as good as it'll get. All of the other audio from my Playoff Package is from FM stations or the internet.

So we'll see how it goes.

s1c, yes, perhaps too relaxed, maybe I should stfu. :)

Give the '07 box some love too!

Yes but I'll have to order that from the US; judging by last time it'll take until the middle of next year to recieve it!

Well, it is Halloween. :)

Oh man, my roomie just made dinner and it smells delicious.

Nothin for dinner tonight for me (well, for now at least) - I was going to make some food but ate a huge meal at like 2 and haven't been hungry (well until now, that i've had the pregame shot and am working on a beer)...haha damn, i feel like eating something disgustingly delicious. like a pizza.

laura k said...

To paraphrase Ralph Kramden, I guess you Rockies never met up with the Red Sox before...

allan said...

so when does fox start showing the sad our season is almost over faces in the crowd?

let's get a bunch of runs and make it the 4th or so!

laura k said...

McC called the Rockies feeble.

We are dominant and they are feeble.

Hee hee.

Amy said...

OK, made it home from the airport for the top of the second. We had a delay, and I was getting quite pissed off. But I see we are ahead, that LBJ got the big hit (who drove him in? Papi?) and that most of the gang is here.

Helton, don't get too excited.

laura k said...

I could go for a pizza too.

laura k said...

Hi Amy! I was wondering where you were. Welcome home.

tim said...

Hey rockies! Go! Now! The others they'll await you! And every single one among the lot of you will have your turn!

/another musical interlude

lets hope atkins sees a diet of carb-filled pitches.

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura. How could I possible not be here for what may the biggest and (sadly) last game of the season?

tim said...

M-FER! I WANT SOME FIRST BASE!

allan said...

lyndon doubled down the lf line, went to third on fy's grounder and -- with the infield in -- scored on tiz's single to right. mbm then gidp.

...

SCOOP TIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Even Fox conceding that was a good pick by Ortiz.

Lord Lynch said...

Gold Glove Tizzle, with a little razzle dazzle...

laura k said...

Papi with the leather!

s1c said...

Wait I thought Papi couldn't play first!!!

Give the '07 box some love too!

But you have to watch something until it comes out!!

tim said...

"So much for the guy that can't play first base"

You mean "So much for the illusion that we fucking made up about the 'guy that can't play first base' "

Fucking jerkasses!

Erin said...

What will Fox do now that literally every one of their big stories about this series has been proven wrong?

Ortiz can't play first? Please.

Ofer said...

Wow, Fox did something right: that graphic with the field comparison was pretty cool.

Papi with the leather!

Amy said...

Thanks for the update. Sounds a lot like the first inning last night except we scored a run!

SoSock said...

There it is - the biiiig outfield - we're doomed.
Damn our outfielders are screwed, and Ortiz can't play defense either!

We are SO doomed.

allan said...

Start over with the first story and go thru the list again -- just like its "news" dept.

s1c said...

Well, just me and B-fly watching this one. BH gone to bed with the cold, how do I know, I come back from the kitchen with my hard lemonade and the dog is on the couch!

One more here Jon, demoralize them.

Lord Lynch said...

Believe me Fox sufferers. Sutcliffe is an abomination as you know, and his commentary sucks plenty of dingle dangle, I can tell you... International feed and no Fox so I can laugh at Joe Cluck and Tim Irrelevant.

Lord Lynch said...

Keyhole strike zone?

tim said...

Damn you, huge outfield! Making us walk guys!

s1c said...

Where was that pitch you fragging UMP?

allan said...

We are SO doomed.

Plus the Rockies have won like 35 of their last 20 games!!!1!11!!

Anonymous said...

Lord, I had to watch the international feed last night...it was sickening to watch/listen.

Lord Lynch said...

Is it true that the Rockies catcher threw his pitchers under the bus?

allan said...

hey mcmoron, maybe lester is throwing a gyroball.

laura k said...

I never thought I'd say this, but given the choices, I'm glad we have Fox.

laura k said...

Sutcliffe is unbearable.

allan said...

Is it true that the Rockies catcher threw his pitchers under the bus?

not sure what the story is at all -- though i have been wanting to find out where that expression first came from.

nixon33 said...

ah ha.

tim said...

Lester comin to bat - let's see a fuckin dong!

Lord Lynch said...

redsock - I first heard it used by Yankees fans over a Mussina rant.

The catcher said their pitchers had not adjusted. Sutcliffe was apoplectic, in his own, stammering, stuttering way, before lopping out his tongue and lapping at Varitek's ample persona....

s1c said...

Hmmm, a lead off double and he doesn't score. Yep, that biiiiiiigggggg outfield is really hurting the Sox with their suspect defense of MHMBM and Papi. Yep. Hurting all the way to the pagne (rhymes with gagne).

bwahahahahahahah

tim said...

I think I'm gonna go with a grilled cheese in a bit...

but not any normal grilled cheese, lol.

I bought some sort of fresh bread earlier, as well as my "applewood smoked aged cheddar" i need to finish eating before it goes bad. hahahaha

Amy said...

SoSock, I posted a comment for you on the WMTC site. Not sure if you are checking there.

laura k said...

Tim, the grilled cheese sounds very yummy.

Hey, we're doing the Niagara wine region thing on Tuesday.

Amy said...

Damn, Tim, you are making me hungry. What else are you eating?

So let's see how Lester swings a bat. Dice K was quite a surprise last night...he looked quite good swinging (not like some AL pitchers who look like they never held a bat).

s1c said...

There it was the first reference in the game to the 0-3 comeback. Yep, I really feel like the Rox will be able to duplicate that feat.

Keep dreaming Fox.

laura k said...

Dice was so cool last night!

allan said...

mcshithead has noticed that sox fans are sort of different after winning in 2004.

how observant.

tim said...

I didn't eat anythin for dinner, ate a bunch of food around 2 pm so I wasn't hungry until post-pregame shot. Now I'm considering the grilled cheese in a couple innings.

laura k said...

Nice to hear them talk about 04 and the history behind it w/out using the word curse.

Lord Lynch said...

OK. I surrender to Mr Sandman.

I'll leave the laptop on sleep, and am sure to wake up a little later...

Amy said...

Get a nap, Lord. You'll want to wake up in a few hours to watch the celebration.

tim said...

Niagara wine thing sounds cool, I think that's what we're doing for my b-day in june (as mentioned in a previous thread). Which places are you headed? (I've got no idea about it yet...Although I know a bunch of ontario wines, heh)

s1c said...

Dagnabbit another 1-2-3 inning. c'mon lester, we need another good inning from you buddy.

Oh, yeah, shuttlecock time LOL
