G5: Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 000 300 - 3 4 0
Blue Jays - 000 003 21x - 6 10 0
I didn't watch this one. The Fiery One hit a three-run dong to tie the game in the seventh, but the bullpen faltered. Q: Why didn't MDC start the 7th?

Tampa Bay beat the Yankees 13-4 in the Bronx. The Devil Rays' 7-run eighth inning must have emptied out the place.

Tim Wakefield (100 ERA+ in 2007) / Shawn Marcum (108 ERA+ in 2007)

Lineup (from comments):
Pedroia, 2B
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Ramirez, LF
Lowell, 3B
Drew, RF
Lugo, SS
Ellsbury, CF
Cash, C
Skydome opener. It's been a rainy day in Toe-ron-to, so the roof will be closed.

Jere will be calling the game and following comments here. If you don't get NESN, I strongly urge you to go with GedMan.

  1. No Toronto games for me this year. They are all on my work days (Fri/Sat/Sun).

In 2007, they were all on the other four days -- the Jays were pissed at lost weekend revenue -- so we went to all of them!

However, we are going to three games in Detroit in May.

  2. YF/SF linked to my pics of the Joba/Bot fistpumpathon.

  3. The link (to my call of the game) is working on the computer I'm on, anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  4. When I click on your link, I get this URL:

    http://www.youcastr.com/incompatible

    ReplyDelete
  5. Congrats on the linkage!

I have to think that Wake will benefit from playing in a dome. Less wind to mess with the knuckler.

  6. "If you don't get NESN, I strongly urge you to go with GedMan "

or even if you do! Thanks for the link by the way, Allan. And when I click on the link you have in this post, it takes me right to the game, so I don't know why you aren't getting that. It worked for me being both logged in to and out of youcastr. (Doesn't that sound like a self-castrating device?)No play button is up yet, but fingers crossed it's up there at 7:15.

  7. It sure would be nice if the Sox could get Wakefield some runs in April, for a change.

Sean Casey will get a start this weekend.

  9. When I go to plain old youcastr.com, I get that incompatible page. And that's a jpg, not linked to anything.

    Hope it works for others.

  10. White Sox 8, Tigers 5
Detroit is the only team without a win (0-4).

  11. Jose, Keys To The Game:

"We all know that the similar name notwithstanding, this poor, brave kid has absolutely nothing to do with the Yankees third baseman. You can tell because if the hawk had attacked the actual Alex Rodriguez there would be five million Yankees fans criticizing the hawk for not removing its beak before hitting the slugger in the head."

    Solid. Fucking. Gold.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Heh. I rarely laugh at the supposedly brilliant Jose Melendez, but that is good.

Good, mind you. Not gold, but good.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Watched the Tigers-Chisox. 1) I really do believe the Tigers pitching will stink. 2) Carera lost 30 pounds and still looks like THAT? 3) This team is going to expose an awful lot of "experts" as frauds 4) Thanks to them, Leyland is going to get fired 5) The Tigers TV broadcasters are boring beyond belief!

  14. I will be moding this evening, but I'm going to *try* to be less active in the game thread. I sometimes find myself reading and posting comments so much that I'm not following the game as closely as I want to.

We'll see if I can keep my big mouth shut, or my fingers quiet.

I'm afraid I can't listen to Jere, though, it's too complicated for my little laptop. Buffyvision and the game thread will have to do.

  16. Last year people thought Oatmeal was a player nickname. :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I should add it to the Glossary if it's not there.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'll be watching the Bruins tonight, but I'll have Gametracker on and I'll be in the thread.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Biggest story in sports tonight:

    This guy:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVgQjoW7iTo

survived. And walked away just fine.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Ah we have Oatmeal, but have we had any spinach yet this year?

Ish - should be happy, getting some Bruins love on the pregame show.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No spinach that we know of yet. :)

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's the biggest news in sports? Must be a slow day.

    ReplyDelete
  23. umm...did you see that? that is probably the craziest thing I've ever seen.

HAH, NESN pregame is talking about the 'budding Yankees-Rays rivalry'. They deserve each other.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not getting the spinach/oatmeal thing. Help me out.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Tim (?) was steaming spinach during games last September. And he complained about burning himself, I think.

For awhile, "steaming spinach" was used as a euphemism for getting a rally going.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Buffyvision is showing the Jays' tribute to Robbie Alomar, they are retiring his number. Nice ceremony. Alomar seems overwhelmed.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Saw the flip. Big flip. Not news. Barely a sport.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tim (?) was steaming spinach during games last September

That started in September? I could have sworn that it was earlier, but it sure did seem to work. Every time we needed a rally Tim would say it was time to start the spinach and boom, bases would be full of Sox.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oatmeal is from the classic diner sign "we have oatmeal". You know, handwritten on a paper plate.

For some reason, Allan started using it instead of "we have lineups". It doesn't really mean anything.

Spinach meant a rally. Oatmeal means... no idea!

    ReplyDelete
  30. It is news (it was the top story on sportscenter), some people say the same thing about baseball, and whether or not you like the sport is irrelevant to the fact that it's pretty impressive that he survived, IMO.

I don't like basketball, but sometimes I can see/understand that there's a huge story going on in it.

But hey, to each his/her own.

.. uh oh, my Dad just called. He's ticked that the Bruins aren't on in HD.

It is too bad they couldn't find an HD channel for each. I don't get HD here so it doesn't matter to me.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Now they're honouring Paul Beeston.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hahah. These little terms are my favorite thing about JoS, although it sure can be confusing when you don't know what people are talking about :p

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is a pretty elaborate ceremony.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh SportsCenter! Well then...

Anyone can say whatever they want about baseball. Or anything else. That's no problem to me. Doesn't change my opinion of people driving around and around.

    ReplyDelete
  35. There's been a fire alarm at the arena in Ottawa where the Bruins are playing. How odd.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Well, SportsCenter (or SportsCentre, depending on where you are :D) is the premier sports news show, so I consider it a pretty good indicator of what's big news on a given day. I'm not really a big fan of the show myself, so it appears we are in agreement there.

  42. We do get a show called SportsCentre, but it's not the same show.

I have nothing against SportsCentre. It just wouldn't change my opinion on what's news and what's a sport.

    Jays are wearing 1992 unis.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I know of SportsCentre, because when I watched the World Junior Hockey championships between the US and Canada there was an ad for "SportsCentre." I had never seen that version before and I found it funny, in a Jerry-Remy-chuckling-at-talk-of-sushi kind of way.

    ReplyDelete
  44. When we first moved up here, we used to call it "Sports Sentry". Now I'm so used to the spelling, "center" looks funny to me.

I was in NYC this week and the money looked so weird. Little and green.

  45. Will be glad when all these opening days are over. The only thing about the baseball season I don't like, is the Opening Day ceremonies.

    ReplyDelete

  47. Where cab I get the baseball card for the Jays' Massage Therapist? MLB.tv is awesome this year

    ReplyDelete
  48. Time for some Bullets!

    - I do not like that the Bruins and Red Sox are playing at the same time, but it's only one game out of 162. Got the game thread, got the radio, and got that little button that switches back and forth, from NESN to NESN.

    - I just spent the day in rainy, dreary Boston, with terrible Friday traffic. Let's just say, I can't describe how nice it is to be sitting at home in my chair right now.

    - That NASCAR wreck was awesome. Not good awesome, but the actual definition of awesome. Awe and wonder. Guys have been killed with less impact than that. It's just amazing now that you can have a crash like that and walk away with a slight limp.

    - I like being able to come home from a long day and see Kathryn Tappen on my TV screen.

    - PLAY BALL (PUCK)!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I hated MLB.TV, probably because I had it when I had a really crappy internet connection. I should probably get it now.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow ish, I completely agree with every single point you made :P

Very yucky weather day in town.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Yucky weather here too, wet and dreary. But it's supposed to be warm and sunny soon. I can't wait.

    ReplyDelete
  52. (puff--puff)
My satillite hook-up is two floors down, and I don't have a laptop---gotta run upstairs to get on-line, then run down to catch the game. See you at crisis points and between innings.

Assuming I don't drop dead, of course...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good crowd at the Rogers Cent-ray.

    ReplyDelete
  54. if your computer can handle the 1.2mb stream it is a sight to behold from an internet shown game compared to years past. I have to run it at 800k on my big screen computer which is still miles ahead of last year.

We dont have EI here so I have to do MLBtv or nothing at all.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I call it Skydome :)

Comments will be stuck for a minute, brb.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Well, I do know how to semi-legally [;)] watch the 'mosaic mode' that shows all the games at once, which is pretty cool. But I don't do it often (you can't see the games that well, and besides, I don't like breaking the law - I don't even have pirated music, which is like going against the college student bible)

Do you need bigger wallets in Canada?

    ReplyDelete
  59. That's never a bad thing :D I had almost forgotten about that since it feels like the season has been going on for about seven weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Good question. :)

We have $1 and $2 coins. They do take up a lot of room. But they're great.

They're called Loonies and Toonies, by the way.

I think the paper money fits in regular wallets.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Unless of course they are passing out jewelry in Fenway.......

Ah, but I consider those RING CEREMONIES, not opening day!!! Besides, those are becoming routine!!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Obviously the Jays fans didn't learn anything from the Cleveland fans, they are waving white hankies.

Roof closed, I am aexpecting the good Knuckler tonight. 7ip - 2 hits - 0 runs for the knucksie tonight!!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. thats how i would start every outing

    ReplyDelete
  64. I know of the LoonieToonies. Don't you find the coins to be a bit clunky though? Do you have a zipper in there to keep your coins in? haha

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the coins. It's so convenient. You dig into your change cup and there's $12 or $17 in there.

    ReplyDelete
  66. That's pretty good, knowing what a Toonie is. I never heard of it til I moved here.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Big Hurt loves the knuckler.

    ReplyDelete
  68. True, good point - I never thought of that. I always feel accomplished when my change jar builds up to $5-6 US, which is like $0.40 CAN at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Does he ever. Allan and I had the unpleasure of sitting through that last year. Thomas had 3 HRs in one game, 2 against Wake.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'll be honest, I've only heard of the Loonies and Toonies because of Dave Barry columns poking fun of Canada (in a very friendly way, of course)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think its the smoke messing with the Knuckle.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Good work Timmy!

That has more than one meaning tonight. Right, Joe? (nod yes.)

    ReplyDelete
  73. Anyone get truped on that one?

    ReplyDelete
  74. No hockey talk please!

    Of course not. No worries.

    ReplyDelete
  75. indeed ish, indeed.

Quick inning. I see Eck gritted his way onto first.

    ReplyDelete
  76. What the frag happened with the work the count. Geez, I blinked and its time for knucksie again.

    ReplyDelete
  77. thanks :)

but don't worry, i won't strictly enforce it.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I won't blab L, but I'll probably feel compelled to say the score when someone scores. Is that kosher?

    ReplyDelete
  79. And in other news, it appears that MLB.com gameday is way less delayed than it used to be.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I was going to say "I won't reject comments if something exciting happens"... so I guess scoring counts as that.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well, enjoy the game, folks. My computer is fucked up so I have to go work at another desk.

I think hockey scores are okay!

    ReplyDelete
  82. Man that haze is so bad, I couldn't see MBM.

    ReplyDelete
  83. what kind of Canadian would you be otherwise ? :-p hooray stereotypes!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Good luck with your work Blogmaster!

    ReplyDelete
  85. TB 1 - MFY's 0 bottom of 2nd.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Cash has a gun to go with that release, if only he could hit.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Mets/Braves PPD, rain

B's scoreless. Florida leading Carolina 2-1 after 1 period (gee, there's two real hockey hotbeds)- Carolina losing=good for Boston

    ReplyDelete
  88. Bruins game must be exciting, it went quiet here.

    ReplyDelete
  89. LOL - and the first hit of the night by the Sox is Kevin Cash!!!!

    c'mon FY

    ReplyDelete
  90. Shabbat shalom, all. Just tuning in to another 0-0 score just like last time. Ready for some action.

    ReplyDelete
  91. you think it's quiet there...

    ReplyDelete
  92. these announcers are so full of themselves

    ReplyDelete
  93. Jere, I can't listen to you tonight - wish I could.

    ReplyDelete
  94. don't worry, no one's listening at all....

    ReplyDelete
  95. Still scoreless, but lots of interesting goings-on, power plays, etc. I see Ca$h-Mon3y got a hit.

    ReplyDelete
  96. How do you know no one's listening?

    ReplyDelete
  97. Last year re Cash we did an All Money Team. People had great ideas. Maybe Allan can find the thread when he's not busy. (I think he's slammed w/ work tonight.)

    ReplyDelete
  98. Is he going to heroically lead the team to victory at WBC next year?
I just hope we (US) don't embarrass ourselves - that's our new goal in international competition I think

    ReplyDelete
  99. don't worry, no one's listening at all....

Since I do the game threads on the old laptop, and since it is so out of date (flash 4, time says 7:02 when it is 8:02), etc. I can't listen to you.

    ReplyDelete
  100. of course, having Clemens on the team was embarrassing in and of itself... I wonder if Beckett gets the ball next year

    ReplyDelete
  101. Jere, I can't listen tonight either. My Sox fan daughter is here so we are watching NESN. Sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  102. At this rate the Sox game will be over before the Bruins. I figured the opposite would be true

    ReplyDelete
  103. amy, all the more reason to listen

    ReplyDelete
  104. First round of WBC games will be in Toronto. I hope we can get some tix.

    ReplyDelete
  105. The sound is bad on this computer, plus she would just not appreciate the humor... She's not as cool as I am.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Let's see if Buffyvision can manage to praise Manny without also backhanding him.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Not much action in this game, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  108. Most Sox fans can't even do that, L

    ReplyDelete
  109. You don't like a pitching duel?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Laura, when did you get back? Yesterday? How long was your drive?

    ReplyDelete
  111. Joe, too true!

Pat & Buffy are really bad that way. As are most announcers.

    Often including Remy!

    ReplyDelete
  112. I do like a pitching duel, but coming in late I am just trying to figure out if that's what it is, or is it just no scoring.

It was lonely here without you during the last two games. The women were sorely underrepresented.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Amy, got back yesterday, and I flew. Allan picked me up in Buffalo. If I only go for a few days (and by myself), I always fly.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Thank you :)

I am trying to comment less now. So far I'm not doing so well with that.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Ah, flying. That makes sense---a long car ride to do alone.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Right, plus I was only there for a few days. And I don't need a car when I'm there.

    ReplyDelete
  117. jere you are 2 pitches ahead of me on mlbtv

    ReplyDelete
  118. 0-0 in the B's game after 1 period.

Got the Sox on now. They were waiting for me to put it on before they scored - no worries

    ReplyDelete
  119. No 1-2-3 innings by Wakey, but he looks good.

ISH- any score yet? down here in ct I can't find the Bruins game

    ReplyDelete
  120. jere's announcing is ahead well more like 3 pitches.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Checking in.

If this job wasn't a rush, I could do a little here and there and still keep score via GDGD. Alas.

I guess I'll watch the condensed game tomorrow. I assume once they're archived, MLB doesn't continue the blackout.

    ReplyDelete
  122. More bagels from Timmeh.

I am really liking our pitching so far.

    Bye.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Cash seems to be handling the knuckler pretty well from what I have seen so far. Maybe we won't be calling Mirabelli back this time.

Where is he, by the way? Did any team take him?

    ReplyDelete
  124. CT gets screwed on this NESN-Plus arrangement.

    ReplyDelete
  125. amy - the Brockton Rox maybe :P

    ReplyDelete
  126. That's another thing, Jere. It's disconcerting to hear the game before you see it. It sort of makes watching irrelevant. I love the commentary, but I found that distracting.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Ancrs: Lowell might have been able to pick up a base if he had run a little harder. Guys, I'm sure he was running as hard as he possibly could.

    ReplyDelete
  128. gnasty pitches there. I don't remember Marcum being this good.

I gotta keep reminding myself that the offense is gonna need some time to wake up, with all these early-season travels.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Where is he, by the way? Did any team take him?

Amy not yet, and after his sob story to the Padres in '05, I would be surprised if he did get a nibble.

    TB 6
    MFY 0

Goint into the bottom of the third!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Poor Doug. Is he really nowhere? I guess I am not really surprised.

    ReplyDelete
  131. joe: CT always gets screwed.

    ReplyDelete
  132. That's why we gave up trying radio w/ the TV. The delay.

    ReplyDelete
  133. I was waiting for Jere to say that re CT.

    ReplyDelete
  134. ISH- any score yet? down here in ct I can't find the Bruins game

The ice isn't tilted in anybody's favor. 0-0 after 1 period (Joe Grav's got the game on, too. I've been in the living room watching). So, everything's even.

You can count on a hockey game to be 2.5 hours long. Doesn't usually change unless special circumstance. That'd be something if the Sox beat it out time-wise.

Gotta get a run or three, first.

    ReplyDelete
  135. L: Lowell DID NOT run hard at first. I said the same thing on my broadcast as they did. He loafed it out of the box because he was pissed, and it cost us a leadoff man on.

    ReplyDelete
  136. This guy's pitching too well.

    ReplyDelete
  137. L, I used to always listen to WEEI while watching the game - ESP. w/ national broadcasts. The delay used to be like half a second, nothing too bad. Now, it always ends up being 5 seconds one way or the other.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Marcum is looking like Cy Young tonight.

FY's Sullivan Tire ad, give me a break, Tito was better.

    ReplyDelete
  139. It was right on TV! I didn't imagine it. He dropped the bat all pissed off and jogged out of the box. Check a replay for proof.

    ReplyDelete
  140. What's the NESN plus arrangement and how did CT get screwed?

    ReplyDelete
  141. Well. Sox are 1/2 way done, B's 1/3. I assume the Sox pace will change, though (it seems like the games that start fast always end up dragging on at the end)

    ReplyDelete
  142. L, I used to always listen to WEEI while watching the game - ESP. w/ national broadcasts. The delay used to be like half a second, nothing too bad. Now, it always ends up being 5 seconds one way or the other.

Time Warner here in southern Maine... although it has a stupid channel lineup and no commercials for businesses just across the river into New Hampshire... the timing is fantastic for TV mute and radio on. It's about a half second to a second behind the radio.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Now, it always ends up being 5 seconds one way or the other.

'04 I always had Uncle Joe and Trupe on during the playoffs, the delay was like 1/2 sec. Now, because of the foul language time delay (5-7) seconds its the other way around.

Need another Bagel by the Old Timer.

    ReplyDelete
  144. They put the Bruins on 'alternate channels,' none of which are available in some parts of CT.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Jere, I am also watching TV. I saw it differently. Not a big deal.

    ReplyDelete
  146. NESN Plus Channel Listing"

It might not be covering an existing channel, s1c. Try your 70s, 80s, and 90s.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Wow, five innings in under 90 minutes.

I actually remember when a whole game could be played in two hours (especially pitching duels) and when games typically took two and half. What made them longer---commercials, designated hitter rule, more pitching changes, slower pitchers, all of he above?

    ReplyDelete
  148. Wow Ish, that's great. Sometimes we would be as much as a full batter behind. The AB would be over, and the batter hadn't even stepped to the plate yet. Crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  149. gritty popout by Eck

I am assuming that you don't like eck.

    ReplyDelete
  150. 2nd period. I'll be around sporadically.

    ReplyDelete
  151. For me it's not that I dislike him, it's just the whole stupid gritty thing. The second coming of Gritsus.

    ReplyDelete
  152. More animals for me to worry about---pigeons locked into the stadium in Toronto.

    ReplyDelete
  153. it stinks to be announcing a game and have everyone complaining about the announcers. Try me!

    ReplyDelete
  154. I'd like to Jere, but I can't. My laptop can't do it.

But I'm not complaining about the announcers.

    ReplyDelete
  155. what's with all the hockey talk? Is it the playoffs or something? (I don't care for hockey, obviously.)
