G59: Red Sox 9, Orioles 4

Red Sox - 013 300 200 - 9 16 0
Orioles - 010 200 100 - 4 10 0
Colon did well (6-7-4-2-5, 103), working quickly and generally staying around the zone with all of his pitches. Manny and Lowell hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth; Drew donged in the seventh.

Ramirez finished with a single, double, HR and three RBI; Drew had a single, walk, HR and three RBI; Lowell had a double, HR and 2 RBI; Youkilis singled twice and scored twice; and Bailey walked three times.

Lopez relieved Colon, and then Hansen and MDC finished up. Hansen looked magnificent, striking out two and retiring the Orioles in order in the eighth on eight pitches.

Tampa Bay -- 18-6 since May 8 -- won yet again, beating Chicago 4-3 in 10 innings. The Twins beat the Yankees 5-1.

Bartolo Colon (2.25, 190 ERA+) / Brian Burres (4.15, 100 ERA+)

Cafardo has some news:
Brad Mills will manage the Sox with Terry Francona away at his daughters high school graduation. ...

David Ortiz is out of the lineup with a right wrist strain. He had an ice pack on it in the Sox clubhouse moments ago. ... Ortiz said he will have an MRI tomorrow or Tuesday.

Jeff Bailey gets a start in left field. ... J.D. Drew [is] back in right ... Mills said Jacoby Ellsbury pretty much has the green light, but is given the red light at times in certain situations.

Are we going to have a Gumball Rally today?

Rob said...

Thursday night's game in Boston against the Rays has been moved up to 6:05 so the Red Sox game and Game 1 of the NBA Finals won't overlap. Well, won't overlap by much, anyways.

Benjamin said...

Does the Francona-offspring graduation mean Colon or Wakefield gets to throw the no-hitter?

allan said...

Hmmmm, no Thorne today?. Maybe I can tolerate some sound.

Rob said...

Thorne's probably calling softball today.

Rob said...

So... Lyndon's got the green line.

Go!

allan said...

LYNDON! (he might try to steal)

(Worthles Info: O's 1-7 on Sundays!)

Rob said...

green light.

lol.

Rob said...

Castig just pronounced Lisbon Falls, Maine, "Libson Falls"

Rob said...

Youk leads the league in hitting for day games. .431

Rob said...

It was a good throw... but come on.

I guess he was out. Bollocks.

allan said...

damn -- hell of a throw.

Rob said...

But that's a situation where you don't feel so bad for Ellsbury - you have to credit the catcher, because the throw has to be perfect to get him, and it was.

Rob said...

CS hurts now. It'd be 1-0 probably.

Rob said...

I got anti-truped there. Joe sounded genuinely disappointed, but the ball kept carrying and carrying and ended up dying near the base of the wall.

Rob said...

Oh great. NESN's got video problems.

Rob said...

Fixed now, it looks like.

allan said...

after the one-out double, colon gets 2 popups on 3 pitches.

Rob said...

Big hole in the infield. Bynum's holding the speedy Lowell on second base.

Rob said...

Brian Burres is dead meat today. He's not fooling anybody.

I gotta run. Have fun hanging out by yourself in here, A. Looks like it's just you for now.

Benjamin said...

Bailey's GDGD photo makes him look like a mini Tek.

allan said...

WTF?
umpire is calling outside/low pitches strikes. strike 2 to drew was too away and low. and the strike 3 to gumball was away and down.

allan said...

palmer rightly says that's an error. but scorer says single.

nick said...

good. phil's here. you're not alone allan. I tried to comment before, but for some strange reason firefox wasn't allowing me to write in the comment box. I'm using safari now.

allan said...

i don't mind the small crowd.
must be a sunny day elsewhere!

white sox get 2 in top of 2nd against tampa

allan said...

palmer on scott: "he's got a modest 2-game hitting streak going."

double -- so is 3 still modest?

Benjamin said...

Speaking of not fooling anyone....

allan said...

CWS: 02
TFR: 00

Chokers and Twins just starting.

nick said...

blammo! they've got his number.

allan said...

9 of 16 sox batters have hit safely. everyone but gumball already has a hit.

Benjamin said...

Gumball had a hit. Last year.

allan said...

501, bitches!

Benjamin said...

Red Sox players stepped on home plate before the final out of the inning.

But you can see that yourself now. :)

Joe Grav said...

Joe Grav said...

allan said...

Joe Grav said...

so a three-ribbie day for manny thus far... i like

Benjamin said...

Damn, how are you supposed to type a list of scoring plays when the Sox keep adding them?

allan said...

2nd
lowell double to rf
varitek single to rf
drew sac to left, 1-0.

3rd
pedroia single cf
yook single thru ss hole, fy to 3rd
manny double, 2-0, yook to 3rd
lowell sac fly to rf, 3-0
tek lined to third
drew single by 2B into rf, 4-0.

Benjamin said...

The O's got a run in the second, so it wasn't 4-0.

allan said...

yeah yeah -
i'm not counting that one :>)

Joe Grav said...

come on bart

Joe Grav said...

FKR have tied it again, 3-3 top6

allan said...

a lot of grounders are getting past bynum, both left and right.

allan said...

is palmer on coke? he won't fuckin' shut up.

a little empty air can improve a baseball telecast, you know. jesus.

nick said...

Maybe the O's should trade 'im for Lugo. According to some folks Lugo's the worst ever...sounds like a good deal then.

allan said...

White Sox 3, Rays 3 (end of 7)

Twins 3, NYY 1 (top 5)

Joe Grav said...

fuck yeah says fuck no

Joe Grav said...

Cologne not particularly sharp today

allan said...

he's generally doing well, working quickly and around the plate. i still like what i see despite the rough patches.

Joe Grav said...

K

Joe Grav said...

me too, don't get me wrong... esp. considering he's #5

allan said...

lopez up

allan said...

96 pitches for colon. that's probably it.

6-7-3-1-5

outside of scott, who doubled and scored, then hit a 2-run dong, he's been quite acceptable.

allan said...

... then again, it is the orioles!

Joe Grav said...

1 BB is the best part, methinks

allan said...

VERTIGO FIRE!!!!!!!!!!

Benjamin said...

Maybe another 4-dong game?

Joe Grav said...

damn rally killer

allan said...

3 BB for gumball

and the walk to markakis. 0-2, then 3 balls all right around the zone.

andy said...

So I guess the Sox suck with jet lag.

Next week the 2011 Red Sox ROY will be selected in the Draft.

I don't know how you could pick anyone else but the Last of the Navajos to be ROY this year. He makes an impact on a team that matters.

Joe Grav said...

Benjamin said...

MIN adds another run and has the bases loaded with 2 outs.

Benjamin said...

And squander.

allan said...

I see CI donged for the MFY run.

allan said...

No DP -- LF did not complete a high-five!

Benjamin said...

So is Manny hot because he finally got 499+500? Or did he get those because he finally stopped slumping?

Benjamin said...

Pale Hose strand a runner at third in the 10th.

Joe Grav said...

4-1 twins top 7
3-3 rays/wsox mid 10

Rob said...

Twins starting pitcher today, Nick Blackburn, was hit in the face with a line drive from Abreu. He didn't lose consciousness nor did he lose any teeth, but he was dripping blood when walking off the mound.

Abreu appeared visibly shaken while standing at first base. He ran to first base with his two hands on his head and his eyes shut.

allan said...

Hansen?

Me likey.

allan said...

L and I were talking about Florie the other night. I know he tried to come back, but I guess he just drifted out of ball.

Rob said...

...Rays win.

allan said...

Tampa 4-3 (10).

Rob said...

Sounds like Chris Young could miss the rest of the season. Broken nose, jaw, and fractured skull.

Joe Grav said...

I know, Phil! In Boston, when there's even the hint of a bangwagon, there are people jumping on it.

Benjamin said...

Cuddyer triples in another run. 5-1 MIN.

Chase Utley has 20 home runs this season.

Benjamin said...

End it, Millar.

The leading AL home run hitters are Josh Hamilton and Carlos Quentin, with 14 each.

This water is DIRRRRRRTY.

Benjamin said...

Thanks, Kevin.

allan said...

Our constant drubbing of the O's prevents the MFY from dropping back into the basement. Ah well.

Joe Grav said...

Thanks Kevin! still a red sock.

So is Colon just coming in at the high end of expectations or actually vastly surpassing them?

I guess the biggest question was whether he'd be able to get healthy and stay healthy, not how he'd perform if he managed to do it.

Rob said...

Twinkies win!

Benjamin said...

MFYs lose.

allan said...

I'd say exceeding so far.

I saw a guy at a store yesterday wearing what was a FKR shirt. I was wearing my uniform as well. I was gonna walk in front of him and say something clever. Then I saw the kid wearing the Pony league uniform of the Rays. I called off my attack. I am loving the fact that the Rays will inevitably pick a lot of fans this year just in time for them to go back to their regular suck.

allan said...

The Rays are going to stay good. Lots of good young players now and from things I have read, a huge amount of talent in the minors.

laura k said...

Can't imagine wanting to attack a Rays fan.

I think it's great that the team is doing so well - it's exciting. I still want them to only get the wild card of course (duh) but what could be better than the perennial basement dwellers to get really good and win a huge number of fans?

Rob said...

I think any baseball fan should be happy seeing this. Even if the Trop is most likely the most annoying place to see a ballgame with all of the crazy noises there. Cowbells and things. But I felt the same way for the Colorado Rockies last year.

Similarly speaking, the Boston Celtics were in the basement last year in the NBA - I think they had the second worst record in the entire league - and a move here and there in the offseason, and they're headed to the NBA Finals with the overall best record in the NBA. Those types of bottom to top stories are very interesting to see.

The Cubs have the best record in baseball right now, by the way. First time they had the best record in baseball on June 1st since 1908. 36-21.

laura k said...

First time they had the best record in baseball on June 1st since 1908.

Holy shit.

allan said...

First time they had the best record in baseball on June 1st since 1908.

Holy shit.

Yeah, but ...

they could still have had a great record and been comfortably in first place on June 1, but been a half-game behind a team in the AL for best record.

Any easy way to tell when they have had the best record in the NL on June 1?

Rob said...

I'm not sure. I'm still trying to figure out baseball-reference.com. Best way would probably see if they have NL record ranking each year and just see where they were today. Seems like a longshot, though.

Jack Marshall said...

I agree....gotta love the Rays. And fear them. I keep reading on ESPN and elsewhere how they can't possibly win more than 88 games or so, best case scenario. I don't see why. The Red Sox have better depth, and will outscore them, and I think the bullpen will prove more solid by the end of the season, but they won't be easy to shake.

Rob said...

The only way the Rays will gain complete respect from the national media is when they actually go out and accomplish these things. Hard for a national guy to say the Rays are going to win 95 games if he's never seem them do it.
