G63: Red Sox 7, Rays 1

Rays - 010 000 000 - 1 9 0
Red Sox - 310 300 00x - 7 8 1
The Red Sox complete a sweep of Tampa -- and take a 1.5-game lead in the East -- with an easy win highlighted by a 15-minute second-inning brawl.

Shields hit Coco Crisp in the front thigh to lead off the second. Coco took one step towards first, then charged the mound. Unlike most baseball "fights", this one featured real and repeated punches. Crisp and Shields were ejected, as was Jonny Gomes, who was on top of the pile hammering punches down on Crisp (and a few on his own teammates). (Carl Crawford should have been ejected for the same activity.)

Manny Ramirez belted a three-run dong over everything in left in the first and then drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. Lester's outing was walk-free (6.1-8-1-0-5, 108) and Mike Timlin and David Aarsdma finished up.

One broadcast note: When Kevin Youkilis (who went to right field when Jacoby Ellsbury was pulled after hurting his right wrist on a diving catch in the fourth) was plunked by Al Reyes in the eighth, Joe Magraine (FSN Tampa) said, with his voice dripping with sarcasm: "What a shame."

Youkilis had not done anything noteworthy in the game. Apparently, Magraine doesn't like how Yook complains on called strikes -- which is odd, since Magraine himself was groaning loudly tonight on several close pitches that were not called strikes on Red Sox hitters. It clearly made his night that a Red Sox hitter had been drilled -- and he was happy to share his glee. Classy guy.

***

Note the early starting time!

James Shields (3.24, 128 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.67, 118 ERA+)

.I just like going to religious services, but not for too long. I get bored. And I get bored 5 minutes into Catholic mass.

I love how you can watch those on TV.

laura k said...

That's how I felt about mass - exotic.

tim said...

holy fuck! just looked at Extra Bases, this looks crazy!

ok seriously WHAT THE FUCK MLB.TV - FORCED COMMERCIALS AGAIN?!?!?!? FUCK YOU

laura k said...

I can't even be Buddhist. I just have no spirituality.

Joe Grav said...

No co-ed housing on campus.

Freshman and sophomore year is the traditional dorm type thing, junior/senior years are apartment/suite style. I am low on the housing lottery totem pole, so my accomodations are less than ideal. But there's no 'bad' housing at BC, it's all pretty good... as residence halls go.

laura k said...

Ish with 401 - with a real post.

Joe Grav said...

attaway, yeller!

laura k said...

Tim, Allan told me you bailed on wmtc3 this weekend, you creep!

Joe Grav said...

so like, we'll have a few bedrooms, a half-kitchen, a bathroom, and a common area.

Rob said...

Ish with 401 - with a real post.

We've been over this already, that we wouldn't be doing any of that non-real posts anymore for those. Yes, a real post. Woo hoo.

Amy said...

The funny thing, Laura, is I know so many people involved with Judaism (and other faiths) who are atheists. I consider myself agnostic, but willing to find something spiritual in the rituals and services when my mind and heart are open to it. I certainly do not believe in a God as a superpower looking down on us and answering prayers. For me, it is about the spiritual forces within us as humans and the struggle for hope and faith in human beings. Although my sense of connection ebbs and flows, when it is there, I do find that the rituals and services can bring that sense of spiritual connection.

Joe Grav said...

I've seen a Latin mass, which I thought was also exotic. But, eventually, boring.

laura k said...

Oh sorry Ish, I haven't been gamethreading too much, I think I missed that memo.

allan said...

staats says manny has 503 long balls in "the home run derby"

oooo-kay

Joe Grav said...

I tend to get bored easily by any non-sports-related or non-book-related activity. Maybe that's why I had no friends when I was 10.

Amy said...

Tim, were your ears ringing? We were talking about you, and I was bemoaning your absence.

Joe Grav said...

I like how membership in a church can be like a community, with day-care, people helping one another out when they're in need, stuff like that. But more often than not that stuff is there as a way to 'buy' people's souls for Jeebus. It's a real turn off.

Joe Grav said...

Let's go Manny - make up for your moment of madness

s1c said...

Also, depending on the timing of a JOS game, if it works out, its possible I could secure the time at the family Lake house, which would be about hr from fenway. That of course would be cheaper than even the < 60. Of course that would depend on the timing.

5 bedrooms and two full baths right on the lake.

A good outing by Lester!!!

Rob said...

I certainly do not believe in a God as a superpower looking down on us and answering prayers.

I'd say I'm right with you with that entire post. Can't really add much more to that.

Amy said...

No co-ed housing? Sheesh, that's right out of the 1950s! I guess not surprising, given the Jesuit history, but still sort of surprising in 2008.

Joe Grav said...

what else can go wrong tonight?

laura k said...

Amy, yes, I know what you mean. I just feel no spiritual connection, and observing the religion without that felt very empty and false to me.

I know many people who enjoy being culturally Jewish without the religious part, and I think it's great if it works for you - but it doesn't for me.

Being Jewish is my ethnicity, my birthright, but not my community. I find the Jewish-community thing stifling.

My true community is progressive activism.

laura k said...

And the Red Sox of course.

Rob said...

Oh cock. Manny's hurt now. Or, more hurt. Looks like he'll finish the AB, probably the game.

Thank goodnesss ... we've got Youk in the outfield!

Joe Grav said...

I see a lot of similarities between faith and sports, as far as community goes... which is probably why religion intrigues me so much.

Joe Grav said...

pinch runner now

laura k said...

s1c, that would be amazing!!! What a party.

Joe Grav said...

manny's like, nah

allan said...

manny just tricking the rays before he steals 2nd.

laura k said...

yup, baseball is my only religion. the only thing i take on faith.

s1c said...

MBM is mincing his way to first and Francona is not going to pinch run for him?

Is he freaking nuts?

almost time for the drive to 17!!!

Rob said...

Not sure why they're chancing it with Manny. It's 7-1. You've got Cora and Cash still available. Take him out.

Joe Grav said...

being a left wing atheist/jew/lapsed catholic party, we would have to bring lots of tofu and lattes. and car pool to and fro.

Amy said...

To me, the real tragic irony about religion is that despite the fact that at heart most religionsa are so similar and all stress the need for "brotherhood" and community, it is often religion that divides us and causes hatred, prejudice, and wars.

Joe Grav said...

Francona says "Manny, go take a rest"

allan said...

looke dlike manny was going to watch that 3-2 pitch no matter what. and wheeler couldn't get it over.

when cash PR for you ... yikes.

laura k said...

This is quite the eventful night.

Joe Grav said...

This game might end up at aroudn 3:40

s1c said...

s1c, that would be amazing!!! What a party.

Would depend on the timing, as its owned by BH's family and like or six families use it. But if the timing is right, we could probably grab it for a couple of days.

Rob said...

Yeah, had a feeling Manny wasn't going to swing. He could have underhanded it in there.

Joe Grav said...

Thank Yahweh this game started at 6

Joe Grav said...

laura k said...

religion as nationalism. very dangerous and harmful.

Amy said...

All these injuries...it makes me realize how lucky we were last season.

I'm off to the living room where there are two TVs. Enjoy the rest of the game, everyone! I might be back here in the second half of the C's game if people are here discussing it.

Joe Grav said...

Moss man probably coming up during the Coco suspension

Depends on the timing, knowing Coco and the Sox, he will appeal which means the next visit to NY would be when the hearing would be and thats in July, I think.

Joe Grav said...

there gose his 1.000 average

during the c's, i'll be here if others are, ish. or if L and RS are checking off, we could move the discussion over to the North Shore Navigators blog.

in the latest fsn replay of the fight, a rays guy with a jacket on falls back out of the pile and his left show flies in the air. he grabs it and hops around, trying to get it back on, so he can start fighting again!

laura k said...

left show = left shoe

Joe Grav said...

timmy mctimlin still in?

allan said...

Joe Grav said...

would others be interested in me opening up a thread over at my blog for the celtics game?

Amy said...

Amy said...

Sorry, Joe and Ish, not a basketball fan.

laura k said...

left shoe

Amy said...

OH shoe. Got it.

s1c said...

See you guys, later, C's are on and this game is in the bag.

tim said...

Tim, Allan told me you bailed on wmtc3 this weekend, you creep!

Yeah, I'm a dooshe. What happened is, due to that little car accident last August, my car insurance wouldn't even get renewed. so after some searching I finally found a place that would insure me...but for twice the cost. So basically I'm working every weekend as well as some days during the week to be able to keep up the lavish lifestyle of driving a Toyota Matrix.

I suck, I'm sorry x 1,000,009 :(

Joe Grav said...

i'm not really a basketball fan either, amy. i just wanna see boston win another title.

Amy said...

OK, so how can Cash be the DH if you cannot replace the DH during the game?

laura k said...

Wow Tim, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. Awful how the car accident ends up living on like that! As soon as you need the friggin insurance, the rates go way up.

Joe Grav said...

you can do a DH for DH swap you just can't put the DH in the field...

for some reason

Joe Grav said...

come on tim tim

Amy said...

Aha, silly rules.

Joe, I want Boston to win also. I just don't have what it takes to watch a whole game. I like the last five minutes of basketball.

Joe Grav said...

I have what it takes to watch a whole big game, as long as i'm with other people and have distractions (got some work to do on the pc during the game)

tim said...

Joe, I want Boston to win also. I just don't have what it takes to watch a whole game. I like the last five minutes of basketball.

Yeah, thats how I was...still am I guess. I'll throw on the game but do other stuff while its on, until it gets down to the end. Then I'll watch intently, if its close.

Joe Grav said...

yes! i feel good about this one now

tim said...

As soon as you need the friggin insurance, the rates go way up.

Yup. What the hell's the point of even having insurance if anytime you need it, they're going to stick it to you.

Oh well, still is probably cheaper than having to pay off the car that I totaled.

tim said...

Tim, were your ears ringing? We were talking about you, and I was bemoaning your absence.

Ha, was just going to check the score until I saw the brawl(s)...then I just had to come in here.

So, what happened with the MBM-Yook fiasco?

tim said...

totally responding to 1/2 hr old comments.

laura k said...

We lost our internet connex for a while. Anyone still here?

Joe Grav said...

i had forgotten about the dugout fiasco. i bet yook won't be answering questions today.

laura k said...

FUCKING A. TB announcers:

Yook is hate.

What a shame.

Amy said...

Yeah, of course, I am here. The game isn't over, and it isn't midnight, so I am here. No basketball game can drag me away.

laura k said...

Oops, make that "Yook is hit".

laura k said...

What the hell's the point of even having insurance if anytime you need it, they're going to stick it to you.

What a racket.

Amy said...

We haven't heard any explanation as to why Manny went after Youk.

I will watch NESN after and see what Terry says.

allan said...

and yook gets hit by al "i ruined nomar's career" reyes.

and migraine is happy because finally a sock got hit. what a shithead

laura k said...

Amy, I thought if everyone else left for the Celtics, you might get lonely and leave. :)

Amy said...

I wondered about the Youk is hate line, but figured you meant the TB announcers hate him.

Amy said...

Laura, I would rather talk to myself here about baseball than watch a basketball game (though I will turn it on after the post-game show just to be a good New Englander.)

Joe Grav said...

yook got drilled? what happened?

Amy said...

One more injury for our team, and I may go to Mass with Joe and pray. :)

allan said...

they clearly do not like yook.

migraine was ragging on him for "whining" about every called strike -- worth mentioning i suppose, but migraine himself was groaning on several balls that he thought were strikes to boston hitters, so ...

Joe Grav said...

the doors are always open :p

Amy said...

Migraine. Uch, back to the glossary.

allan said...

and why would they be cheering for yook getting hit? he hasn't done shit in this game.

but an announcer openly cheering an opposing player getting drilled. that's great. classy bunch in tampa.

Amy said...

So I go to the glossary (no small task since I have to go back to the JOS main page, link there, then return here) and Migraine isn't even there!

WHO IS MIGRAINE?

allan said...

"Joe Migraine"?

gotta be there.

laura k said...

I wondered about the Youk is hate line, but figured you meant the TB announcers hate him.

typo :)

It was an unbelievable comment. Totally gratuitous, just wanting to see someone on the opposing team get hit.

Amy said...

I can't even be Buddhist. I just have no spirituality.

Just saw this comment, Laura. Don't you find something spiritual in your activism? For example, after the vote on the resisters' motion, wasn't there a sense of spiritual connection with all those people you shared those experiences and feelings with? To me, that's what I mean by spiritual: some sense of how we are all connected.

Amy said...

"Joe Migraine"?

gotta be there.

Perhaps I don't want to be!

laura k said...

Amy, maybe it would be easier to have another browser open to do things like that? I always have 3 or 4 open during game threads, to look stuff up, check my email, moderate wmtc, etc.

Amy said...

I just love how Remy says Aardsma.

Benjamin said...

Do we see a sixth HBP this inning?

laura k said...

Amy, absolutely not. I feel a deep connection, but I would not describe it as spiritual.

Amy said...

I have IE with tabs so I have several windows open at once. But I don't have the JOS main page open when I am threading. Not a big deal, but why not whine?

allan said...

nice bare hand grab and throw from lugo

Joe Grav said...

slugo!

laura k said...

Tamper anncr = Joe Magraine = Joe Migraine

Spelling might be a bit off, but that's the idear.

Benjamin said...

You mean "Tamper chancre".

allan said...

ol' blinding headache thinks yook whines and cries about obvious called strikes.

laura k said...

tabs, windows, same idea. as long as you have multiple whatevers to use.

Amy said...

Maybe my definition of spiritual is too broad (or at least broader than yours is), but I know that those are the types of experiences I call "spiritual" because they draw out some common mission and sense of purpose and values in a group of people.

Joe Grav said...

UGHHH come on aaaaa

andy said...

Any links up yet with video of the fight and the dugout thing? I need a post game press conference link too. We don't get that kind of coverage in california.

BTW why did manny get angry with the sweat machine?

Amy said...

Do you guys get the NESN post game show? I guess not if you are hearing TB announcers. Do you want me to thread about what Francona says in the post-game show? Or are you signing off after the third out?

Benjamin said...

GDGD has video of the on-field brawl but not of the Manny/Youk fight.

Benjamin said...

Feel free, Amy.

Amy said...

Andy, I didn't know you were in CA.

I will post about it for anyone who wants to stick around. I just don't type as fast as others.

Dirty water after a dirty game.

Benjamin said...

And Water.

laura k said...

We don't get NESN post game no matter which broadcast we get. As soon as the game broadcast ends, it clicks off.

allan said...

and the time of the game (according to me) is exactly 3:40 !!!!

Joe Grav said...

Win

allan said...

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!

Joe Grav said...

I called it redsock

laura k said...

We don't know what happened w/ MBM and Sweaty McWhinyhead.

Amy said...

OK, since I think I am the only MA resident NOT watching the Celtics game, I will try and be the scribe.

Amy said...

So we are a game and half up, and another player down.

laura k said...

sweep! sweet!

allan said...

GDGD agrees with me: 3:40

Amy said...

Oh, Joe's still here. He can post also, in case I miss something.

laura k said...

Don't sweat on my account, Amy. I'll find out through the usual methods.

See you all tomorrow!

andy said...

Amy you Nailed it!!!

Joe Grav said...

I'm here, but I have the C's on

Amy said...

So far lots of footage of brawls in general.

Amy said...

Just recapping. No intent to hit FY. Blahblahblah.

andy said...

The rays wish they were relevant. The A's and the Ang's will be the west and wildcard. the rays will be eating shit in florida waiting for the real teams to show up for spring training.

Amy said...

Second inning. OBvious intent to hit Coco. You're supposed to hit him in the leg.

Surprised Coco went out since Shields did it the "right" way.

Here's Terry now.

ANother boring night at the ballpark.

LBJ: will be examined in the morning. Nothing more than day to day, they think. Hopeful that is all it is.

andy said...

oh i thought jacoby strained his sprain

Amy said...

Called a strain (not a sprain), but examined more tomorrow.

Good news to hear that. Doesn't know what testing is planned.

Will send Carter back and bring Moss back.

andy said...

We will see what the farm system is all about now. this is the moment for a lot of these guys. I think in all the confusion of injuries and ejections that we should bounce lugo and bring up lowrie. Who would notice?

Amy said...

Manny's hamstring: feeling it in the batters box. Limiting his stride on the bases. Will see how he is tomorrow. Maybe he can DH. He was optimistic. (Manny was).

Dugout: exchanging views on things, Lots of testosterone tonight. Sometimes those things happen. We'll get by that one. Everybody was fighting everybody.

andy said...

Ooh sexy. lots of testosterone.

andy said...

my bone is full of testosterone

Amy said...

Coco: will be a little stiff, but nothing blatant jumps out.

The brawl: It happens. Lots of bodies flying. We won the game.

No warnings before the game.

Thought Crawford was pretty aggressive out there. Umpires don't have eyes everywhere. THey handled it pretty well.

Amy said...

Was Youk upset about Manny? Wasn't that big a deal. We'll move on.

That;s it.

Amy said...

OK, that's what Terry said. Not much insight there.

andy said...

I wanna see what the bitch rays have to say.

Amy said...

TC and other guy (??) say no big deal, don't worry about Youk and Manny.

andy said...

TC?

allan said...

"exchanging views"

!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

HEidi heading into the locker room soon for reactions. Sit tight, Joe and Andy!

Amy said...

TC: Tom Caron (NESN)

OTher guy: other announcer whose name escapes me. Perhaps that's Bailey?

Former player but just can't get his name. Brain dead.

andy said...

you crucified it amy. good job.

Amy said...

Thanks, Andy. I see you caught up with the rest of the thread!

Joe Grav said...

HEidi heading into the locker room soon for reactions. Sit tight, Joe and Andy!

:O

Joe Grav said...

I bet Manny and Yook were discussing mccain vs. obama.

Amy said...

OTher guy: from Stanford maybe? Made some comment about Carter being a Stanford guy.

Someone please guess other guy's name.

allan said...

Thought Crawford was pretty aggressive out there.

fuckin' a right.

andy said...

Ross Perot

Amy said...

Love it, Joe. But which one is for McCain?

allan said...

HEidi heading into the locker room soon for reactions.

I assume most of the reactions to Heidi will be positive.

Amy said...

Joe, turn on NESN and tell me the name of the other guy.

Driving me crazy. I wish TC would say his name.

allan said...

McCain? Gotta be Yook. Curt been brainwashing him.

Amy said...

Coco coming on next. Anyone still here?

Benjamin said...

I am.

allan said...

i haven't turned on mod yet!

Amy said...

More commercials, but I will post when they come back.

allan said...

so is carter known as 'christ' for the time being?

9casey said...

Amy , thats Dave McCarty with TC

allan said...

SoSHers have been saying very good things about Merloni.

Joe Grav said...

I assume most of the reactions to Heidi will be positive.

A fair assumption.

I figure Yook would be the McCain guy.

Ococ on yet?

I favor "Christ" for Carter.

Joe Grav said...

Wow, Gomes was pounding at him with that right hand.

Joe Grav said...

this coco interview is awesome

allan said...

this coco interview is awesome

not enuff info .. grrrr

Amy said...

Ccoc: I was up there to hit, I wasn't going to be scared. They just decided it was right to hit me. I charged the mound, after faking a run to first. People trying to scratch at my eyes like little girls. Pulling my hairs like little girls. (Coco grinning from ear to ear). Everybody tried to get their little blows in but they didn't really hit me hard. Big guy, Gomes, tried to come in,

Shields didn't try to hit me in the head. It is what it is, tit for tat. He put the knee down, I slid in hard, he hit me with the ball, and I went out.

Should baseball things be settled that way? Coco: it shouldnt be off the field. I don't want people to slash my tires. We aren't criminals.

Amy said...

How's that, Allan? Enough info?

Essentially, Coco loving it. Happy to settle it on the field, not off the field.

Joe Grav said...

that was one of the best interviews ever

allan said...

Next games with Tampa: June 30, July 1-2!

Amy said...

I missed some of what he said, but that's most of it.

allan said...

I liked it. Probably see video somewhere online tomorrow.

Are we done here? :>)

allan said...

Not that I'm rushing you!

Amy said...

9Casey, thanks, I love you. Yes, McCarty. You can be sure next time I will forget again.

This is my life now.

Amy said...

Captain and Mayor coming up next.

Amy said...

I am only here to serve so if all are done, I am done.

Amy said...

Casey (aka Bailey) stuff happened. Just taking care of business, just baseball. NOt sure aout Youk MBM.

Amy said...

Tek: You guys were privy to the replay more than we were. It is just part of the game.

Joe Grav said...

Thanks for the commentary Amy, we've got the Celtcs back on here.

Amy said...

OK I am done!

allan said...

SoSH says Don said Ococ's dad was a boxer!

allan said...

Thanks Amy! Night all!
