Rays - 010 000 000 - 1 9 0The Red Sox complete a sweep of Tampa -- and take a 1.5-game lead in the East -- with an easy win highlighted by a 15-minute second-inning brawl.
Red Sox - 310 300 00x - 7 8 1
Shields hit Coco Crisp in the front thigh to lead off the second. Coco took one step towards first, then charged the mound. Unlike most baseball "fights", this one featured real and repeated punches. Crisp and Shields were ejected, as was Jonny Gomes, who was on top of the pile hammering punches down on Crisp (and a few on his own teammates). (Carl Crawford should have been ejected for the same activity.)
Manny Ramirez belted a three-run dong over everything in left in the first and then drove in two more runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. Lester's outing was walk-free (6.1-8-1-0-5, 108) and Mike Timlin and David Aarsdma finished up.
One broadcast note: When Kevin Youkilis (who went to right field when Jacoby Ellsbury was pulled after hurting his right wrist on a diving catch in the fourth) was plunked by Al Reyes in the eighth, Joe Magraine (FSN Tampa) said, with his voice dripping with sarcasm: "What a shame."
Youkilis had not done anything noteworthy in the game. Apparently, Magraine doesn't like how Yook complains on called strikes -- which is odd, since Magraine himself was groaning loudly tonight on several close pitches that were not called strikes on Red Sox hitters. It clearly made his night that a Red Sox hitter had been drilled -- and he was happy to share his glee. Classy guy.

Note the early starting time!
James Shields (3.24, 128 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.67, 118 ERA+)
I'm busy cleaning the house, but McGowan/Wang begins at 1:00.
ReplyDeleteJays walk the leadoff man, Yanks get 2 runs on 1 hit. McDungeon for McGowan. Wang is THROWING A PERFECTO thru 2.
ReplyDeleteOh and I'm at Fenway tonight so I won't be around....
ReplyDeleteMcGowan gives up hits to Posada (who hasn't played in a month) and the .220 hitting Cano to start the second. I guess he doesn't have it today....
ReplyDeleteAnd the, uh, jinx works as he gets a DP and then a K after falling behind 3 and 0. Sweet! Still 2-0 Yanks after 2.
ReplyDeleteAllan's cleaning house!
ReplyDeleteI feel like thats slang for doing something real good.
I feel like thats slang for doing something real good.
ReplyDeleteOther than making the house look purrdy for the third annual wmtc party on Saturday, no.
All those years in the desert, you telling me he didn't have occasion to clean house every once in while??
ReplyDeleteJays leave 'em loaded (but break up el perfecto) in third, and Yanks get leadoff runner on YET AGAIN in bottom half. Now Shemp up, two on, two out, still 2-0. Maybe one more squander and then the Jays can start their comeback. And cap it off against Farnsworth later.
The Stair-Matt-ster! Two-run dong and we're tied!
ReplyDeleteJays take lead 3-2 in 5th, still hitting. Wang almost at 90 pitches. Fun.
ReplyDelete3-2 Bluebirds. Bases loaded with one out after an error and HBP.
ReplyDelete7 to effin' 2!!!! HAAHAHA. Eat it, Ace Wang.
ReplyDeleteThe fifth is turning into a nightmare for Wang, with five runs in so far. The first came on a Milk Dud error, but they have been scored with one out, so I think his ERA is still on the hook.
ReplyDeleteTuesday night was amazing at Fenway. I'll have to do a little post on it.
Best thing about this game is that with these two teams done for the day and no hockey, Sportsnet will almost surely show the NESN feed, so if EI stick me with FSN, I'll switch over. (They usually show NESN when the Jays are not playing, though theu have shown the MFY a couple of times.)
ReplyDeleteZen: I was looking through an old post and saw you mention you were going this week. Always good to see a win!
ReplyDeleteHA! My ESPN rant got linked at Big League Stew:
ReplyDelete"Now I've read everything: A Red Sox fan, of all people, is complaining about ESPN. If there's one fanbase that should have absolutely no beef with the four-letter network that King Hank says created them, it's Red Sox Nation. [The Joy of Sox]"
I just re-uploaded the video I shot of Manny's 500th with slightly better quality if anybody wants to take a peek.
ReplyDeleteYanks had dicks with no out, but only score 2 in 5th. 7-4 Jaze.
ReplyDeleteJere's recap of last night's contest was a true gem! Easily his best one yet!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I gotta go to Fenway now--hope the Jays can hang on.
ReplyDeleteVery nice one, Jere.
ReplyDeleteJere, great film (especially the psychedelic parts). What awesome seats you must have had. I won't even bother to ask how you got them since it will only bring on more razzing of my inability to snag seats.
ReplyDeleteJust entered my name in the school's lottery for games in August and September. I can hope to get the chance to buy some that way.
Enjoy the game!
I thought "Hebrew Hammer" was Gabe Kapler's nickname.
ReplyDeleteTOR - 000 250 0 - 7 6 0
ReplyDeleteNYY - 200 022 0 - 6 10 1
Bluebirds can't capitalize. Still 7-6 with two MFY frames left.
ReplyDeleteCano with the -.209 WPA doubleplay.
ReplyDeleteJays hang on in the bottom of the eighth, then put on two with no outs vs. Farnsworth in the top of the ninth.
ReplyDeletePosada comes out...?
Clutch Damon flyout ends the inning, stranding two. Farnsworth gives up a couple singles to start the 9th.
ReplyDeleteDuncan had pinch run for Posada.
ReplyDeleteStairs double. 8-6 Bluebirds.
ReplyDeleteLyndon, LF
ReplyDeleteFuck Yeah, 2B
On Fire, RF
Bad Man, DH
Dr Doubles, 3B
Mayor, 1B
SASAHE, C
Ococ, CF
"I Hate" Lugo, SS
HGH walkoff. Fucking Bluebirds.
ReplyDeleteGiambi walkoff HR! Yanks win 9-8.
ReplyDeleteGoddam!
NY wins on Giambi walkoff...
ReplyDeletefuckin' yanks. what the fuck.
ReplyDeleteAnd they creep back to .500 -- and 6 GB.
ReplyDeleteNYY has not been as many as 2 games over .500 since April 23.
ReplyDeleteThey have been as many as 2 games over for exactly 2 days this year: April 16 (9-7) and April 23 (12-10).
fuck.
ReplyDeletelooks like i'm getting a migraine tonight.
joe migraine, that is.
fsn on the package -- and nada on rogers.
Hi all
ReplyDeleteThe WPA graph for that MFY game is crazy, of course. It looks a bit like the one from last year's Mother's Day game against the William birds.
ReplyDeleteOK, I'll bite. William bird?
ReplyDeleteKing William III, aka William of Orange.
ReplyDeleteON FIRE!
ReplyDeleteretaliate against us AND we get a base runner? nice.
ReplyDeleteWERD.
King William III, aka William of Orange.
ReplyDeleteWhoa.
They didn't wait for Coco to come up for the HBP?
ReplyDeleteOn Fire is still on fire!
ReplyDeleteTHANKS BEING!!!!
ReplyDeleteMBM!!!!!!
ReplyDeletef u shields!!!
getting ready to go out in a couple of minutes. nice to see a manny dong before I go!
ReplyDeleteMan-Man-Manny!
ReplyDeletedaaaaaaaayum
ReplyDeleteMANNY!
ReplyDeleteRallykilling waste of a double, imo.
ReplyDeletemanny says 'get that shit out of my house'
ReplyDeletequarter-dong
ReplyDeleteTamper announcers wondering if Manny is even aware that the Celtics are "going for a world championship tonight".
ReplyDeleteThis is SO OLD. When will they ever give that up.
As if the man's baseball career depends on what he knows about the NBA.
true - double would have been better for manny -- no tonly would he get the two runs home -- but the sox would have had a runner at second.
ReplyDeletenow they got no one on.
migraine then had to correct himself and say the celts are beginning to go for a title tonight. idiot.
ReplyDeletei was gonna say...
ReplyDeleteno kidding allan. if manny had gotten that double, there's a chance he might've scored on the fluke single!
ReplyDeleteThen the sox would've been up 3-nut.
backwards K
ReplyDeleteI was hurrying to Fenway Tuesday night from another engagement, so as I went in I forgot to get misty eyed about the fact that I hadn’t been there since 1994. But a lot had happened since Frankie Viola was the focus of our hopes, so emotion did kind of seep in as the game went on. We were in the center-field bleachers, where, on the left-field side, the row hits an angled wall with some chain-link patches in it. I could thus leap up and watch tense plays with my back to this wall without spoiling anyone’s view, and between plays took to lacing my fingers into the chain link, reminding myself I was there in Fenway.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn’t as difficult to get tickets through StubHub as I thought, and even with the fees and markup did not feel like too much of a ripoff, at least not to do it just once. And the game was sublime: exciting enough to be interesting, but the win didn’t come too hard for the Sox in the end, so the evening had a happy, easy air.
I didn’t get up for beer – just didn’t want to miss anything. Lots of high points: The Celtics fan on the field was the wildest moment. Security really seemed to underestimate his athleticism. The ovation for Manny at his first plate appearance back from the road trip and 500 HR’s was pretty intense. And despite the 3-run lead, I could appreciate the pressure under which Papelbon enters every time.
The funniest element was the couple of very drunk young men in our section. First, they insisted on the Wave, and got it going all the way around the Park to their loud delight. I don’t care for the Wave in general and loathe it in baseball. Immediately after their Wave triumph, Pena hit his two-run HR, after which I bellowed, “No more fucking Wave!”
Later on these two began to continuously heckle BJ Upton. “Uuuuup-ton! Uuuuuup-ton! Uuuuuuup-ton – YOU SUCK!” Now, Upton was having a great game; he’s young and fast; and he’s on my fantasy team. So I began saying things like, “Uuuuup-ton! You’re 2 for 3 with a stolen base and two runs scored!” Or I would try to fit “.410 On Base!” on top of their “YOU SUCK!” Someone nearby told me we tried to trade for Upton (which I didn’t realize), so I got some mileage out of that to the amusement of those around us.
It was a fun night – a little drunk, but not too much; a bit of give-and-take with the Bostonians, but nowhere near flying fists; friends and relatives I had not seen in a while; and the Red Sox rolling to a win. Perfect.
i hope manny's HR doesn't come back to haunt us in this game.
ReplyDeletebut wait -- if manny had hit a double (better than a dong, i grant you) -- would he then be clogging the bases?
ReplyDeletecan someone call dusty baker and get a ruling, pls?
manny clogging would've prevented casey from stealing home! we coulda been up, uh...4 nothing?
ReplyDeleteococ making himself sound really dumb on the nesn broadcast.
ReplyDeleteThese Lester strikeouts keep inflating his pitchcount. He should give up more one-pitch hits.
ReplyDeletealright. I'm gone. have fun y'all.
ReplyDeleteSee, a two-pitch double. That's being pitch efficient.
ReplyDeleteThe other funny baseball thing about my trip was the night previous. We were with my friend's stepmother; all were lubed up a bit on what grows from the good earth -- and she was trying to talk baseball a bit while Okajima was getting ready to toss a Baltimore sweep out the window.
ReplyDeleteWasn't it true, she wondered, that advancing on a sacrifice fly was basically the same thing as a stolen base? Oh, no, we said. Totally different. But, she said, isn't it true that it's after the out that the runner can take the base...really, sort of, almost the same thing as stealing it?
My friend went off into a long explanation -- trying to be conciliatory since we were sitting in this woman's house. In his ramblings, he ended up inventing a new statistical category to which both phenomena could belong: Siutational Advancement.
The next night at the game we were going on about Team Situational Advacement rankings and Selective Situational Advancement Indifference.
all were lubed up a bit on what grows from the good earth
ReplyDeleteCrisco?
Whew, thanks OnFire.
ReplyDeletewow - that's some real shit.
ReplyDeleteIwamura reads up on the latest by David Sedaris.
ReplyDeleteFuck coco. I'm not amused. I hope the rays bash his face in.
ReplyDeleteSo they get two HBPs out of the deal?
ReplyDeleteFuck Gomes too.
ReplyDeleteFuck the Yankees, this is where it's at. Sox-Rays: Rivalry for the 21st Century!
ReplyDeleteCoco for President!
ReplyDeletewho was that asshole who kneed him too?
ReplyDeletewas itlongoria who was wailing punches into the crowd/
ReplyDeleteCoco should counter-retaliate by stealing third from first.
ReplyDeletegood job jacoby!!
ReplyDeletewell, navarro took his mask off.
ReplyDeletebye bye shields hahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteAm I to understand fangraphs.com isn't adequately covering what must be a bench clearing brawl?
ReplyDeletei love baseball, but baseball players are so immature.
ReplyDeleteLook at fucking Gomes sucker punching Lugo while he's on the ground being held down!! What an asshole.
ReplyDeletewho is 13 on the rays? he was puching like crazy too -- on coco while in the pile?
ReplyDeleteHoly shit! What happened? I just turned on the game....Coco out, Shields out...WTF?
ReplyDeleteYeah, like hockey and baskeball players are mature.
ReplyDelete#13 = Carl Crawford
ReplyDeletefsn dwaynne staats saying that it began last night when "coco began to cry and issue threats"
ReplyDeletepro athletes in general tend to be immature, but I find nothing honorable about settling your differences by humming a 90 mph baseball at someone.
ReplyDeletenice to see something more than the stupid pushing and shoving and mama jokes.
ReplyDeleteWho is 31 on the Rays??? He is wailing on Coco, while Coco is being held down.
ReplyDeleteor, for that matter, by piling in and having a 5-on-1 dogpile like you just saw on coco
ReplyDeleteWho knew Coco had such a temper? With that name, I always assumed he was a sweetie pie.
ReplyDeleteI find nothing honourable about getting sanctimonious about honour and maturity over a fight in a baseball game.
ReplyDeletejonny gomes is a big shitbag. he should be suspended for 8-10 games. ditto crawford.
ReplyDeleteshields took the first big swing and threw the pitch , so i expect him to be suspended too.
as should coco.
i think that should take care of it.
i'm sure they will suspend/eject another red sox for no reason, to 'balance' it out.
13 crawford.
ReplyDeletegomes 31 = asshole. like nettles on lee type asshole.
Especially from someone who follows hockey, for goddsake.
ReplyDeletewalking off, ococ seems pretty pleased. got it out of his system.
ReplyDeletechris carter time/??
\
If they had a 3rd man in rule and Coco and Shields had to square off and fight one on one, I bet that wouldnt have happened.
ReplyDeletePlus coco would have kicked his ass
ReplyDeleterays dlts saying bartlett's block wa slegal. then show the replay, his entire leg from the knee down is blocking the plate.
ReplyDeletecatchers cannot block the plate without the ball, i assume the same is true for INF
Yeah, Coco looked happy and satisfied. A little catharsis. Why not.
ReplyDeleteEspecially from someone who follows hockey, for goddsake.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's the thing. You have a problem with a guy, you fight him, one on one. i think fighting in hockey is stupid and i'd like to see it outlawed, but they don't throw the puck at eachother at 90 MPH, or have 6 people go jump on one guy.
Oo, the best-named pitcher, Grant Ball-Four.
ReplyDeleteAlso a good name for a home-plate ump.
To me, there is nothing dumber/worse than intentionally humming the ball at people.
ReplyDeleteTony C hailed from my hometown. I hope it doesn't take another Tony C to stop this shit.
It's a team sport, so they don't fight one on one. It's a scrum. Big deal.
ReplyDeleteIt's not like it happens all the time, it's very rare, but it's also part of the game. And it can be a memorable part. I can't see making a big deal over it.
And I'm not blaming the Rays for it per se. I'm sure at some point when Gomes or Crawford are up, they will get thrown at. and I'll think that is stupid too. You can kill someone like that.
ReplyDeleteSo no Rays ejections other than Shields?
ReplyDeletegrant balfour grants ball four.
ReplyDeleteOh e-fucking-nuff about Tony C. Every time there's a fight some pompous Red Sox fan has to bring up Tony C.
ReplyDeleteIt happened ONCE.
How many thousands of people are killed in car accidents every year? You're telling me you've never exceeded the speed limit?
Stuff happens, and most people live afterwards.
6 pitches - 6 balls from grant
ReplyDeleteLugo extends his walking streak to four games.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is that people have to drive cars to get from Point A to Point B. Along the way, sometimes people get hurt. But nobody has to throw a baseball at someone's head.
ReplyDeletemeanwhile, back to the game.
ReplyDeletebalfour sucks.
If it was so easy to kill someone with a baseball, why has it only happened once in the whole history of the sport?
ReplyDeleteAnswer: because generally you don't kill someone like that.
I'm not advocating head-hunting, but everyone starts moaning about it, it's a bit out of control.
no one threw anything at any heads.
ReplyDeleteococ was hit in the thigh.
and you can have a brawl without anyone throwing at anyone at all
the best fight i saw btw the sox and yanks happened with a collison at HP. no pitches at all.
ReplyDeleteNo one is throwing at anyone's head, and no one is saying head-hunting is a good idea. But that didn't happen here! It's completely irrelevant.
ReplyDeleteI suppose the Rangers should thank us for getting a few Rays suspended for their series.
ReplyDeleteI'm not saying it's common to kill people with a baseball, I'm saying it's not a necessary risk to take. It's dumb. There is no parallel to it in any other competition, aside from maybe intentionally crashing someone in a car race.
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteand you can have a brawl without anyone throwing at anyone at all
That'd be cool with me. :p
Carter scores! 4-1
You can wreck players' careers short of killing them, though.
ReplyDeleteWell, this was a good brawl for my money.
ReplyDeletea handful of minor leaguers have been killed by balls. only 1 at the mlb level.
ReplyDeleteIt's just dumb. I don't see how whipping a hard projectile at someone equates to having a hard slide in an attempt to gain 2nd base. That's not reciprocal to me.
ReplyDeleteand I don't drive, so no, i've never violated speed limit laws. :P
ReplyDeleteWell, I hate the fighting. I know it happens, but I hate it. Intentionally throwing pitches at someone is just one part of what I hate about it.
ReplyDeleteBut I never understand using force to settle disputes.
Yes, you can wreck a player's career. And I'm not saying it's a good idea. In fact I've been saying it's not a good idea.
ReplyDeleteHowever, brawls happen. They are a rare but occasionally recurring part of the game of baseball. Generally there are no lasting consequences.
And in this instance, there is absolutely zero reason to bring up beaning someone in the head with a baseball, because that did not happen.
The only good thing to come out of this is that before the incident, I thought Coco looked like the only idiot, but now the Rays look like bigger fools.
ReplyDeletewell, i'm talking more about the generic way 'baseball fights' are contested, not this specific incident. i know nobody threw at anyone's head today.
ReplyDeleteyet.
ReplyDeletei like in hockey brawls how each guy holds onto the other guy's shirt to keep from falling on the ice while they take swings at each other. meanwhile the refs stand around and watch.
ReplyDeleteI don't think brawls in baseball have anything to do with settling disputes. They're the result of escalating frustration and anger.
ReplyDeleteI watched Olympic hockey in 2002 and 2006 - no fights allowed - automatic suspension if you do. And what do you know, the game was way more entertaining, more focused on skill than trying to inflict pain.
ReplyDeletei miss the good old days of baseball where in a brawl like that there would absolutely be a dozen or so fans coming out and getting involved. but the modern game has been so watered down ...
ReplyDeleteof course, as fjm would point out, hockey is a contact sport, and baseball is not, so the comparison is moot anyway
ReplyDeleteFuck you Rays. 1-2-3
ReplyDeleteI bet Jere's sitting in the stands as we speak, crafting his report on this protracted pugilism.
ReplyDeleteI think you are reading "settling disputes" too narrowly. Coco was pissed off with the Rays; the Rays were pissed at him. To get even, the pitcher throws a pitch and hits him. That's not a dispute?
ReplyDeletePerhaps there is no way to talk out that kind of dispute, but throwing balls or punches does not strike me as a positive way of venting frustration. Certainly outside of sports, no mature sane adult would act that way.
I know it's sports, and sports are a different version of real life, so violence is going to happen. I just think it's really ludicrous for a pitcher to hum a ball at a guy. I would like to see someone return fire by picking up the b all and throwing it back at the pitcher. Maybe that would make it stop.
ReplyDeletei hear mlb is going to ask that players finish their punching in a more timely manner so as to cut down on game times.
ReplyDeletehow the fuck did that reach foul ground
ReplyDeleteYeah, so much for ending this game in time for the Celtics.
ReplyDeleteYes Amy, you're right.
ReplyDeleteI don't worry too much about this occasional baseball behaviour spilling into the rest of life. I don't think there's much of a correlation.
I realize a lot of people feel that any sort of physical violence is to be deplored, and I respect that. In a situation like this, I think it's fun.
Actually that happened last year in a North Shore Spirit minor league game. Carlos Rodriguez of North Shore got thrown at twice in one game. He made a catch to retire the side in RF, then as he was jogging in with the ball, he tossed it at the pitcher on his way out of the dugout.
ReplyDeleteIt was stupid and crass and he got suspended (rightfully so. He also got cut from the team for disgracing it and nobody would sign him. Why does that standard not apply to pitchers?
manny's foul
ReplyDeletei know -- there is no ground out there - it's like threading a needle.
For the record, Hamilton didn't throw at Tony C. Congiliaro stood with his head in the strike zone, and had a tendency to freeze when the ball was at him...a bad combination. People had been predicting a serious beaning for years. I loved Tony (Yay Swampscott), but Hamilton was not at fault.
ReplyDeleteJoe, respectfully, everyone here understands that you are against beanballs, and I don't think anyone else here supports them either.
ReplyDeletejack - that is apparently also how ray chapman got hit (and later died). leaning out over the plate, froze on mays's underhand fling.
ReplyDeleteand of course they did not wear helmets in 1920 (chapman). when did those become the rule? 50s? i know batters thought they were not manly.
ReplyDeletedon't get me wrong, the pugilism was entertaining. but i think you all know where i stand here re: beanballs.
ReplyDeleteas a male, i understand that testosterone-fueled events can lead to immature reactions. (Just take a look at what happens here when Heidi comes on tv, for instance.) it's all good.
i just think that if you have differences with someone, you settle it with them, man-to-man, without a dangerous weapon.
and that is all i will say about it, since there's no need to bicker. on to the game.
LBJ!!!
ReplyDeleteshit i hope he's okay
shit shit shit shit shit
ReplyDeleteShit, is he ok? What a catch, but I hope it was worth it.
ReplyDeletelugo to the outfield or what?
ReplyDeleteplease don't be hurt lbj!
ReplyDeleteLugo--Carter--Drew
ReplyDeleteLowell--Cora--FY--Casey
i presume
enough already joe. no one is disagreeing with you.
ReplyDeleteHow many more outfielders do we have? This sucks.
ReplyDeletesure - coco and bartlett (or whoever) could settle it in an alleyway after the game -- another old baseball tradition.
ReplyDeletewhere the tarp is now used to be an alleyway out to the street that players would go to fight sometimes
Baseball fights are fun, because hardly anyone ever gets hurt. And they have tended to help the Sox, especially against the Yankees. A Yankee-Sox fight in '67 was widely credited for bringing the team together, and of course, we have the Tek-Arod dust-up. In '76, I think it was, Graig Nettles and Mickey Rivers managed to injure Bill Lee's arm shortly after he could be seen on TV saying to Nettles when the fight seemed to have ended, "Hey Fuck-head!"
ReplyDeleteoh shit!
ReplyDeletecan yook play LF again?
ReplyDeleteis he avaialble
So much for our speedy outfield without Papi. My stomach hurts from all this.
ReplyDeleteyook to the outfield.
ReplyDeleteJack, I'm impressed. I thought you'd say fights are a bad example for kids.
ReplyDeleteyook in right, eh?
ReplyDeletewhy yook to RF and not LF? is carter slower than yook?
ReplyDeleteSo to paraphrase Abbott and Costello, who's in left? who's on first? Who's at short?
ReplyDeleteI am confused!
Do we know how badly Jacoby is hurt?
ReplyDeleteyep
ReplyDeleteMay 20, 1976
monday night baseball
i can see the whole thing in my mind even now
was that when lee came out with his nazis and brownshirts comment?
Hmmm, would either Crisp or LBJ have gotten to that hit?
ReplyDeletei guess carter doesn't play right. maybe a worse arm?
ReplyDeleteOF: carter - drew - yook
lugo still at short.
come on lester
ReplyDeleteChrist, Lester has to dig in. The team needs him to keep it out of the damn outfield.
ReplyDeleteRedsock..YES!!! One of Lee's best.
ReplyDeleteI still miss him.
Good memory, Allan!
k
ReplyDeletemost outfielders used in a nine-inning game?
ReplyDeletewe've used 5 -- in 3.1 innings!
Thanks, Allan, but WHO'S ON FIRST? Bailey? OK, yeah, he always was.
ReplyDeleteI do feel like Abbott and Costello.
You know, Manny could have been a late inning defensive REPLACEMENT for this outfield, if he wasn't the DH!
ReplyDeletejack - something came up last year and i started writing about that fight in a post.
ReplyDeletei did it all off the top of my head -- went to retrosheet -- and the only thing i got wrong was it was a single hit to evans and not a fly ball.
can't remember what prompted it, though.
Youk must be feeling rather odd out there in right. Certainly a versatile sort of guy.
ReplyDeleteGood for Lester. Let's keep those balls in the infield.
casey -- not bailey!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I would have put Manny in left and let someone else be DH. Does Carter play left field? Could he be any less experienced in right field than Youk?
ReplyDeleteManny could play outfield if we lose another. Lester would get some practice for interleague batting, though.
ReplyDeleteCasey, Bailey, whatever. I just am so confused!
ReplyDeleteOK, Tek, I recognize him. :)
Redsock, my memory is that something started between Fisk and Munson at the plate, the benches emptied, and Lee thought Nettles had gotten in some cheap shots and said so, which set off round two. Somewhere I have the Globe clipping...
ReplyDeleteAllan, your memory is damn scary. Makes me wonder whether I am suffering from dementia when I cannot keep Casey's name in my head.
ReplyDeleteAmy, if the DH goes into the field, the DH is lost, and the pitcher has to bat.
ReplyDeleteBut I still might have done it. I think Manny's hammy is still bad.
i can remember a fight that happened when i was 12, but i can't remember thelast time i wrote about it.
ReplyDeleteturns out it was all the way back in march 1, 2004!
Wow, I never knew that rule. You cannot name a different DH during a game.
ReplyDeleteHey, good for Carter!
man carter is slow hahaha
ReplyDeleteLugo seems rather jovial. Guess the fight didn't get him down.
ReplyDeleteCarter's first major league hit?
ReplyDeleteLugo's too?
