G66: Red Sox 2, Mariners 1

Mariners - 010 000 000 - 1 3 0
Red Sox - 001 001 00x - 2 5 0
Masterson (6-3-1-3-4, 88) turned in another quality start and the trio of Craig Hansen, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon each threw an inning. Seattle managed only one hit from its final 25 batters.

The red-hot J.D. Drew drove in both Boston runs, with a bases-loaded HBP in the second and a line drive solo dong to deep center to lead off the sixth.

Julio Lugo walked and doubled and Brandon Moss walked and singled. Manny Ramirez's sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

Quick Work: Jeemer threw nine pitches in the eighth and Bot needed only five in the ninth.

That lineup's pretty craptacular. Any more specific word on Jacoby's return besides "soon"?

2-run abreu dong to the upper deck in rf. plus he stood and watched it for a bit. i wonder if the dolts on yes mentioned it (since they always crap on manny).

Amy said...

Wow, I am here for the first pitch! Can't remember the last time I got to see the beginning of a game.

allan said...

Yay! Plus we have this Sunday off. Baseball together in the afternoon, then an evening in the back yard.

Amy said...

How'd you get Sunday off? Did you take the whole weekend for your WMTC party?

allan said...

i took sat and sun off.

Amy said...

Cool. Hope it isn't as HOT there as it is here. We were in NYC yesterday, and it was God-awful hot.

allan said...

it was very hot, but our yard gets shade mid-afternoon, so it was okay.

laura k said...

Hi Amy! We had a great party and raised a lot more money than I expected.

My brother and SIL came and stayed over, and we were saying how you and Marcie would be instant friends.

laura k said...

Hey, this kid's got a future in broadcasting.

allan said...

POUND THE DARD.

Amy said...

Sounds great, guys. I do wish TO was a bit closer! I read on WMTC that you raised $600---that's terrific!

Too bad it's so hot even up north. Sort of contradicts the image everyone has of Canada the Tundra.

We saw a really good movie in NY---The Visitor. Save it for your movie season if you don't see it up there. It made me want to go shred an American flag somewhere.

allan said...

we recounted the $ - it was $726!

Amy said...

I will take a leadoff walk.

Amy said...

And I hate the DP.

laura k said...

It gets plenty hot here.

$725! Plus a few more people will read The Deserter's Tale, and a friend is arranging a resister speaking engagement for an organization. Good stuff.

allan said...

FY AVG down to .265 or so.

allan said...

wmtc4 - a saturday in june 2009

mark your calendars!

(we may be canadian citizens by then!!!)

laura k said...

Amy, that movie looks really good. I loved his first movie, The Station Agent. I'll look forward to seeing this after October.

laura k said...

Quiet thread today? It's too hot to go out - ppl should be in the a/c watching the game.

allan said...

KC - 01
NY - 20

royals score a run on a passedballa!

Amy said...

I hadn't even made the connection to The Station Agent. That was also an excellent movie.

Where'd you find the other $125? Was Tala hiding it somewhere?

laura k said...

You can't eat money, so Tala has no interest!

I only did a quick count last night, today we counted more carefully.

Amy said...

Maybe people are at a pool somewhere or the beach. Or at the game?

Also, Sundays in June usually mean graduations, end of year picnics, weddings, etc. We have to go to a farewell dinner in an hour or so ourselves. I am looking forward to June ending! Too many boring dinners and events this month.

Friday we had a bris in NJ, last night a birthday dinner for Harvey's mother (91). It seems like forever since we just could be home!

Amy said...

BB BBs. Yuck.

laura k said...

We never have stuff like that in our lives, so I forget how it is for some people in June.

Amy said...

Oh, boy, Drew is earning the love this season!

laura k said...

ON FIRE WITH THE LEATHER!!!!

laura k said...

And there are still Red Sox fans hating on Drew. They are nuts!!!

allan said...

I enjoyed watching that play.

Amy said...

You are lucky. I hate the rubber chicken circuit.

BTW, my daughter and SIL had dinner in Piermont two weeks ago---a town I had never heard of until you mentioned that it was where your sister (right?) lives.

Seattle draws first blood. Poo.

s1c said...

And the Lead off walk scores, but no worries, enjoy your temporary lead Seattle, because that is the last run you get against the Master!!!

allan said...

royals get 2 more, up on jtc and mfy 3-2

laura k said...

Yup, sister in Piermont.

Well, not entirely luck. 1, we work on weekends and 2, I rarely do anything out of obligation, we only go to stuff we want to go. Which means the invitations stop coming, which is fine with us!

laura k said...

nice!

Amy said...

Is NESN going in and out on you, S1C?

OK, only one run. Not an issue with our new souped-up lineup! :)

laura k said...

Do you know where in Piermont they ate? Just curious. My sister and BIL are friends with a chef/restaurateur in town.

s1c said...

Amy - yes NESN is experiencing the vagaries of sun spots or something.

Amy said...

These various things are a mix of obligation and family/friends whom we care about so we want to be there to show support (like the dinner tonight and the bris). We have too much guilt to blow these things off. We just describe them as "non-recreational" and make the best of them. It's the ones for work that we really resent.

Amy said...

I don't know the name of the restaurant, but I can ask her later. I believe it had a view of the river, but not sure. I know they had an excellent meal.

laura k said...

Right, I know what you mean. I'm not big on guilt. I just try to show support in my own way. But work stuff, yuck, that's friggin annoying.

Amy said...

Sun spots or the heat? Whatever it is, it is annoying.

So do we think Youk is sufficiently chastened, or do we send him to anger management?

Amy said...

How'd you manage to escape the guilt gene? I thought it was embedded in the tribal DNA. :)

laura k said...

I vote for chastened but it won't last.

allan said...

yook -- no real reaction on that k. a sosher said he seemed more subdued the day after the manny slap. i guess we'll see as the season goes on.

Amy said...

Yeah, maybe he's a bit more self-aware now. Maybe he thought it was cute. Hard to believe that kind of temper would just disappear, unless part of it was an act.

allan said...

now the team has to tell him to do something about the excessive sweating.

Amy said...

Casey Kelly: I dread the fact that I know that I will get that name confused with Sean Casey. And Bailey, whoever he is.

laura k said...

Not tribal, I think guilt is a choice.

Plus you know I don't go in for that tribal stuff. :)

Amy said...

This NESN feed is driving me nuts.

The sweat: can you imagine how many quarts he will produce today?

laura k said...

We need a player named Casey Bailey.

laura k said...

horrible sweat image! ewwwwww.

Amy said...

Guilt as a choice? If so, I need to work harder on choosing something else! Seriously, I think guilt is taught. Unlearning it is a struggle. The older I get, however, the easier the struggle.

laura k said...

Well, taught or choice is the same thing, at least how I mean it. Meaning, it's not in our DNA, it's what we're taught and we can teach ourselves something else, i.e. we can choose to do otherwise.

allan said...

Can someone tell me why the Dard is THROWING A NO-HITTER?!?

allan said...

quarts

that is totally disgusting.

laura k said...

Because we haven't gotten a hit yet?

allan said...

Took a peek at ThreadSox. 4 posts yesterday -- and the first 2 of those were from me.

laura k said...

There will be no JoS gamethreads for 16 days!! June 17-July 2.

laura k said...

There goes the no-hitter!

the rettih-on? thanks ococ.

Amy said...

There goes the no- hitter. What a shame.

Amy said...

You owe me a Coke!

I posted something about agreeing with you that guilt is not genetic, but it got gobbled by Blogger.

Amy said...

It is sort of strange that people do not migrate over the Threadsox. I was in NY so couldn't post, but when I have checked out Threadsox this season, it has been VERY dead.

laura k said...

i will be happy to buy you the beverage of your choice :)

laura k said...

I think I have to watch this game sans thread for a while. I had 3 hrs of sleep last night (I always have insomnia after drinking) and my head is starting to pound.

Amy said...

I will take either a Cosmopolitican or a nice cold beer then!

allan said...

MMoss.

laura k said...

threadsox, yes, it is strange. i used to be concerned that ppl would go to threadsox and not come back to jos - but there's little danger of that right now.

s1c said...

Some of us missed the game yesterday for posting. Has been hell week here as we weren't able to use our shower until friday. Sometimes I hate our house.

1st and 2nd 1 out, we need a hit here sLugo!

Amy said...

Feel better, Laura. I will be leaving in about 30 minutes also. I hope s1c talks to Allan.

allan said...

we're taking one laptop with us, so we should be able to watch mlbtv, but it won't be very easy to moderate.

allan said...

time to unslump, dusty

Amy said...

Sorry about your shower, S1C. We had a leak from our bathroom into our kitchen and now have to repaint the kitchen ceiling.

Amy said...

Score a god damn run!

Amy said...

Good AB for FY. But a hit would be better....

s1c said...

Amy - so did we, but the tub upstairs had non-standard fittings making replacement harder especially since I couldn't take any time off since I had to be available to answer any technical questions on Wed., Thu., and Fri.

Of course BH is taking the opportunity to decide to change the decor in the Kitchen.

andy said...

I'M HERRRRRREEEE!!!

Amy said...

NESN flickering again. ARggh.

Amy said...

Bases loaded. Nice AB.

allan said...

... just in time to see a fiery salami dong.

Amy said...

Harvey thinks our leak was a sign that it is time to move (which we would do if the market was better, but we will wait out the market).

I am pissed at NESN. What the hell?

s1c said...

Moving doesn't enter our mind, we are probably here until I retire in 12 or so years.

allan said...

HBP RBI

MBM GS #21?

Amy said...

Not another injury, please no.

s1c said...

Tied up!

Amy said...

MBM! Be bad. Real bad.

s1c said...

Time for MBM to get a slam dong!!!

Benjamin said...

Drew's ok, right?

allan said...

looked like left forearm.

Benjamin said...

Andy, shouldn't you be out there trying to nurse Ellsbury's wrist with some soup?

Amy said...

Come on, Manny. I will take an RBI single. Anything but an out.

Amy said...

SHIT.

s1c said...

Crap, oh well, c'mon kid lets have an OTT inning!!!

allan said...

dard: 17-11-40 - 60

masterson: 13-22-15 - 50

allan said...

so, anyone applying to be a governor?

Benjamin said...

Dard's at 68, not 60.

laura k said...

soup, eh? that's what we're calling it now.

and wrist...

allan said...

KC - 012 00
NY - 200 0

s1c said...

Yeah, I sent off my application as soon as I heard about it, I think I could pull off a coup once in office and replace remdawg! j/k

allan said...

68 - yes, typo.

Amy said...

OK, score runs. I have to go get ready to leave. Enjoy the game. Sox win 4-2.

andy said...

Ellsbury is flying out to stay with me after this game. I will be rehabbing him. Think Misery. I will have him tied to my bed.

laura k said...

Rob said...

I like air conditioning. Yes I do.

s1c said...

The dard is closing in on 100 pitches, let's get this guy out of here guys!!!

Jack Marshall said...

Really, after this performance, how can the Sox NOT add Masterson to the bullpen when Dice-K returns??

Zenslinger said...

Hopeful takes on this kind of frustrating game:

- Masterson is working a 3-hitter.
- Masterson is matching efforts with Bedard, so we'll have the advantage when we get to the bullpen. (I almost believe in ours...)

Rob said...

Hits off the green.

allan said...

SLUGO!

come on fy

allan said...

NY retakes the lead 4-3 in the 6th

Rob said...

Think the heat is bad? You could wake up to this, in Big Sky, Montana here on June 8th.

s1c said...

Big Sky, Montana possible retirement spot for me!!!

s1c said...

nuts

Rob said...

There is more snow right now on the ground in Big Sky, Montana than there is in Barrow, Alaska.

allan said...

man, i'm exhausted. huge yawns, watery eyes and hard to keep my eyes open - feels like the 13th inning of a west coast game.

s1c said...

Really, after this performance, how can the Sox NOT add Masterson to the bullpen when Dice-K returns??

Will be a September call up, but will be in the Minors prior to that as they want him to pitch steadily.

Don't forget, we also have HH down in the Minors working on his fastball along with Schilling and Daisuke on the DL.

Rob said...

man, i'm exhausted. huge yawns, watery eyes and hard to keep my eyes open - feels like the 13th inning of a west coast game.

I slept through an inning earlier. I think it was the third.

allan said...

hansen up

Benjamin said...

I had a post-coital nap and tuned in in time to see us tie it up. Feeling pretty good.

s1c said...

hansen up

3rd time through the order, which is when Masterson usually struggles.

allan said...

masterson has gone at least 6 in all four of his starts. at 88 pitches now.

let him go in the 7th with a short leash?

Rob said...

Bedard has wilted.

He looked like he was going to faint.

s1c said...

masterson has gone at least 6 in all four of his starts. at 88 pitches now.

I think that is what Francona has in mind.

Need some runs here boys!!!

allan said...

green in for the dard

s1c said...

NESN showed Drew 0-2, are they being prophets here?

Runs!!!

Rob said...

LET THE DONGS ON FIRE!!!!!

s1c said...

ON FIRE DONG!!!

allan said...

DREW!!!!!!!!!!!

flo who?

Rob said...

Dave O'Brien: J.D. Drew is absolutely on fire!!!!

andy said...

Is drew fitting in in Boston now or what? How can you hate him?

s1c said...

ON FIRE is not hitting cheap home runs either, last two have been to the deepest parts of the park.

Time for a back kcab!!!

Rob said...

Luckily Phil didn't have to have another coital and post-coital nap to see the Red Sox untie this one.

Zenslinger said...

JD -- who else?

I have always thought the "sweet swing" was a bit of a myth, just a subjective way for fans to enjoy their favorite batters. But with him...he doesn't seem to swing that hard. Maybe that's what's meant by the "sweet swing".

allan said...

2nd swinging K for yook -- and again, just a stare off into the distance. no cussin' or nothin'.

andy said...

Masterson is probably my favorite pitcher this year. I vote for the short leash 7th and see what he can do. Let him do the work to save his own win. I don't know how things work sometimes but in the post season this year if Schilling is back then we should have Masterson in the pen. We have a lot of pitching depth in a post season situation. Beckett and Lester pitch in the first game, Schilling and HH in game 2 and Dice and Masterson in game 3? Wake could fill the gaps and Oki and Pap pitching alternately. Could this work?

Benjamin said...

I'd be willing to take one for the team.

allan said...

hansen in!

andy said...

Allan would you go into the dugout and throw a fit if you knew it would end with a back hand bitch slap from the Caribbean Nightmare?

allan said...

heat probably played a part.

Rob said...

Would you ever have thought this year, that Justin Masterson would be in the rotation for the Red Sox and Clay Buchholz would be in Pawtucket? If you did, you're weird.

s1c said...

Heat probably did play a part, plus sometimes I think Terry looks for good feeling take outs. Up 2-1, top of 7th is a good time to take him out with positive feelings.

andy said...

HH will get his fastball in order and be back up soon enough. Finally we can dump Timlin and put Masterson in the pen with the occasional start or long relief when needed. Lugo sucks too.

allan said...

put Masterson in the pen with the occasional start or long relief when needed

will not happen. he just got promoted to paw and needs to start every 5th day. always a nice option, but he'll go down.

also 6 strong innings is all you can ask/expect.

allan said...

mdc has been up awhile - now jeemer too

allan said...

hansen = beast

Zenslinger said...

Nicely done indeed by Hansen.

allan said...

jays beat birds 5-4.
mfy up 6-3 in 7th

Zenslinger said...

And it looks like Zito is headed for his second win.

s1c said...

hansen = beast

Looking at 09, its possible that the Sox will not have any pitcher over 32 on the team, except for maybe Wakefield.

I see possible starting 5 of Beckett, Matsuzaka, Buchholz, Masterson and Lester. With relief being bot, MDC, Hansen, Oki, AA, and Lopez with Wake being the swing man.

allan said...

jeemer in
einstein at ss

s1c said...

Einstein means the routine are routine, but also lose about 1/2 the range.

Oki is going to be spectacular!!!

allan said...

nice play by cora there!! -- and a liner for out #2

bot up too

s1c said...

Bot - 0.00 ERA vs the mariners. Of course I would not be upset if they scored some insurance here.

allan said...

sox pitchers have allowed only 1 hit to their last 22 batters

s1c said...

ruh roh - lights flickering and cable box goin on and off as the t-storm moves into the area!!!

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, MLB.tv just lost the NESN feed.

Benjamin said...

After a nine-pitch performance like that, it almost feels like a waste to bring Paps in.

Zenslinger said...

Whoops -- it was a pitching change.

s1c said...

This is the type of game that Rhodes explodes. Time for a little TNT from ON FIRE!!!.

Benjamin said...

Move it along with these pitching changes?

allan said...

rhodes gets drew -- time to pull him so he takes a positive feeling away from the outing.

allan said...

putz whip almost 2.00!

20 hits and 14 walks in 17.1 IP

Except Rhodes sholdn't need that as long as he has been around the league.

andy said...

I said this before. Move manny to 5th and ortiz to 4th. or vice versa. Ell, Ped, Drew, Papi, MBM, Lowell, Youk, Tek, Lowrie.

andy said...

I really think it's important to keep many after papi to keep them throwing strikes to papi who will hurt you big. Manny will get hits and long dong silvers. I just think that lineup will get RBI opps for all the guys and will really get some rallies going. With drew down low its all upside down. What I really want to know is why not do this? what is the con to my pro?

Benjamin said...

FKR - 000 002 001

Jack Marshall said...

Andy, unless the player batting after a slugger is a complete zero and the rest of the line-up is pathetic, there is no such thing as "protection" in line-ups. This has been proven again and again, but media types keep talking about it. There are so many examples of hitters having greater seasons AFTER their supposed "protection" left via fee agency or trade that it's impossible to list them all. Here's one of dozens: in 1967, everyone said that Yaz's chances at a Triple Crown were dead when Conigliaro, the only other genuine power hitter on that team, went down. But Yaz was BETTER from then on. It just doesn't matter...pitchers try to get hitters out, that's all. The line-up just doesn't make that much difference.
Your line-up is fine. So are a hundred others. The only really dumb line-up is one using Lugo as a lead-off batter---like today.

Here at Wicked Pissa Dude.com we are convinced that anyone could hit .300 behind Manny. I guess it stands to reason that because JD Drew has some protection in his slot in the lineup he ripping the cover off the ball. Now we just need to find a spot for Papi to hit, or let's just give him the year off, he deserves it and we'll bling him out at the end of the season.

GO SOX!!!

9casey said...

It seemed to work out fine last year, the lineup , that is....Drew has stepped up , but when Papi returns I assume he will go back to the third spot....And I don't see Tito ever having Drew and Papi in the lineup back to back.....
