Jere said...

It'll take a nice c-back and a w-off.

Probably because they want the books to be made into movies. More money.

How true. The dollar over the art form.

laura k said...

But everyone wants their books to be made into movies! "More money" is a given when you're a writer - writers need money because writing books doesn't pay for shit.

But when the book itself is already a screenplay, that's something else entirely. It means you're not even bothering to write a book for readers.

Amy said...

So we get a DP. NOW.

Joe Grav said...

Someone please tell me when we're batting. My dad put the other game on.

Wait a second! Everyone wants more money, and lots of people *need* more money, and writers are no exception to that.

Writers have always profited from their books being made into movies. There's nothing wrong with that.

But you can still write a good book. Good books can still be made into movies.

Joe Grav said...

I agree L. I didn't get that vibe from HF, but I can see why youd be upset if you did.

Amy said...

Had me heart atwiiter on that one.

Joe Grav said...

This game is hurting me more than usual.

Joe Grav said...

Like, I feel that this loss (if it happens) is extra-blowy.

Amy said...

Joe, we're batting. One down.

allan said...

get it over with, boys, i wanna sit outside.

Attack of the Joba bugs

laura k said...

Poor Joe, quotes Nick Hornby and I go off... :)

Joe Grav said...

Just for that, Allan, I hope this one goes extras.

Joe Grav said...

I need to be more careful about what I say in these gamethreads. :p

SoSock said...

Not really liking our chances here :(
Amy, I sure get wanting your books to be made into movies. God knows comparatively few writers make a good living at it. I don't get sacrificing the integrity of what you write just to improve the odds of getting the deal.
Of course, I'm not really a writer, I just think about it a lot.

laura k said...

It's never fun to blow a lead.

Joe Grav said...

Dammit

Rob said...

But you can still write a good book. Good books can still be made into movies.

Yeah, but people try too hard and that's how they get made to be sort of screenplays.

Nick, I'm waiting for my storm. I hope we get one so I get break out my new camera and catch me some lightning. ...pictures.

Joe Grav said...

This one hurts more than usual. I just figured it would be a good close finish.

laura k said...

Sosock, that was me. Unless Amy said the same thing as me.

Of course I agree, no one should "sacrifice integrity". I just don't think it's fair to put down writers for wanting their books to pay some real money.

Joe Grav said...

Ass.

Rob said...

Clean clean water. Lame.

Amy said...

Hey, Sosock, I think you meant to respond to Laura. I haven't been in on the movies from books discussion, though I do hate books that read like they were just written to sell a screenplay. Like most best sellers.

Game over, water clean. ECH.

Joe Grav said...

agreed, L.

I don't have any desire to watch basketball now, I just want to sulk.

laura k said...

And outside we go! That was a shitty loss. A glass of red wine and twilight in Ontario awaits. G'night all.

It's our last full week of gamethreads for a while!

Joe Grav said...

Bye L.

Joe Grav said...

and Bye, Allan.

Joe Grav said...

I just got a text message.

FINAL: BAL 10 BOS 6

Fuck you Yahoo Sports alerts.

Amy said...

I am all for writers and other artists earning money on their creativity---otherwise, works would not be created.

That's the whole underlying theory of copyright protection, one of my areas of specialization.

Rob said...

I give the Celtics game credit for making me not feel so bad about this loss. Something I can move my brain to and take my mind off of this bad game.

Go get'm tomorrow.

nick said...

missed the last two outs because emma came downstairs to go outside and look at the lightning. the rain is now coming down (and in!).

I'ma gonna miss the gamethreads.

SoSock said...

Yes, it was you, wasn't it.
And I didn't intend a putdown for hoping to get a deal. That would actually be pretty damn cool.
You said it well with - Just write good books. They can be movies too. (paraphrased)

Amy said...

OK, time to finish packing. We will be on the Cape for a while, and I will be in and out of game threads, depending on our evening plans.

Joe Grav said...

where are the gamethreads going?

Rob said...

I'm really going to miss the gamethreads too. ThreadSox just isn't the same because nobody seems to bother. Too bad, really.

laura k said...

16 days without threads: June 17-July 2. Hopefully you'll all go to Threadsox.

But hopefully you'll all come back!

Joe Grav said...

Why are they going away?

Joe Grav said...

sniff, sniff.

Joe Grav said...

Well, that's OK , I'll be busy at Navigators games, but still :'(

haha.

I hope peeps go to ThreadSox too.

laura k said...

Yes SoSock, thanks. :)

Amy, have a great time at the Cape.

I'm hanging out a couple more minutes while Allan writes his game post.

laura k said...

Joe, b/c we'll be in Newfoundland. We can't leave moderation off. Trolls are still lurking. (Very disgusting destructive trolls.)

Rob said...

I wonder if it'd be a better idea if one of us opens a blog that is used for gamethreads when you two are away. So people can just use their blogger names and go at it like normal.

laura k said...

We were away for 3 weeks in 2006, but that was before gamethreads!

laura k said...

Ish, that's a really great idea! It could be Temporary Joy Of Sox.

Joy Of Temp Sox.

Or whatever.

It's a great idea.

Joe Grav said...

You guys aren't allowed to travel! :'(

haha.

Moving to an alternate-blog may be a good idea.

allan said...

just don't think it's fair to put down writers for wanting their books to pay some real money.

Right!

And, by the way, how many of you motherfuckers have bought 1918?

laura k said...

Ish, you could open comments just during games! So if there were trolls any other times, no comments would get through.

allan said...

Awwww, I'm just kidding -- you guys are great! (/bender)

Amy said...

I don't know why people don't go to Threadsox. Last season most of us did, but so far this season, it's been just a few of us and very, very few posts.

If others are there, and I am watching the game, I will be there. Otherwise, I will have to talk to Harvey during the games!

Joe Grav said...

Not me, I hate that a-hole author, so I have no interest in the book.

laura k said...

Not me, I hate that a-hole author, so I have no interest in the book.

LMAO

Joe Grav said...

I actually was about to (and by 'about to' I mean 'within the next few weeks') buy the JoS book.

laura k said...

Yabbut I hear the editor is really cute. And so talented!

Amy said...

I won my copy of 1918. OTherwise, I would have bought it!

(BTW, what do you think of the movie Babe, Allan? I caught a few minutes of it over the weekend and thought I would rent it for an off night.)

Joe Grav said...

Besides, what sort of loser writes about a team from like 900 years ago? probably some Canadian.

allan said...

ThreadSox is not the end of the world, you know.

But if any of the regulars wants to moderate comments while we are gone, shoot me an email.

We will have a puter and access, but if we are watching games on mlbtv, modertaing will be next to impossible.

laura k said...

I wonder if I'm the only one who laughed at the Bender reference.

allan said...

Canada wasn't even a glint in my eye when I wrote that thing.

I am a bit of an a-hole, though. That's true.

...

Now my glass is empty.

Joe Grav said...

The reference whooooshed over my head.

Amy said...

I had no idea what the Bender reference was. Is it like YALA? Or a cultural reference I am just too uncool to know?

allan said...

All Ruth movies are pieces of shit.

The end.

Or "Fin" as they say up here.

Joe Grav said...

I will buy the '18 book eventually, I promise.

laura k said...

The one with Kelly McGillis? (Who we used to live next door to?) Very bad movie.

Or the one about the cute little pig?

Joe Grav said...

Probably next summer. (My summer reading list is jam packed for now.)

laura k said...

nick said...

holy crap is my storm good!

I was hoping allan might open it up to some wiling regular to moderate. and for absolutely little use at all, I just created notjoyofsox.blogspot.com.

Amy said...

The one with John Goodman.

Joe Grav said...

I hated the one about the cute little pig when I was a kid. No idea why.

Jere said...

You know, some of us have perfectly good, comment-leave-able blogs already:)

So, the idea of "going outside" sounded nice to me, so I went out there, and it's just as freakin' hot out there as it is in here! I'll wait til it rains...

Joe Grav said...

I like the idea of going to NJOS.

Amy said...

We only have AC in our bedroom. When I open the door to the hallway, a wall of stale hot air hits me and strangles me. Like hell.

allan said...

Re ThreadSox:

Cakey's gettin' upset!

nick said...

I've got nothing against jere's or threadsox. there's just already a precedent here. I'll join up wherever when I can.

laura k said...

John Goodman & Kelly McGillis, same movie. It might be ok if you don't care about baseball. If you do, forget it.

Geez, why am I still inside? See you all tomorrow.

Amy said...

What does Cakey do over at Threadsox when JOS is doing game threads? I always feel a bit badly for him that we come, use all his food and furniture, and then leave when the fun folks come home.

allan said...

over the past few days, i have thought of either:

threadsox
someone else modding here
jere's place

but not a new blog. not sure about that.

we have a week -- we'll (you'll) work something out.

allan said...

mod back on. be back later.

Rob said...

I'd vote for Jere's place.

Benjamin said...

Electricity went out in the bottom of the seventh. I come back to find this result.

I miss 2007 Beckett and 2007 Okajima.

Must have been a great storm.
I really love a good storm, unless of course it's Friday evening during baseball season. It's no fun at the LL field on Saturday morning after a big storm.
I do wonder though. We haven't had even a mild one since the doozy that brought the tornados thru here a few weeks ago. Might be a tad disconcerting that next time.

Jere said...

Yanks up 2-1 at stretch time in Oakland.

Thanks for the Vote, ish. I'd probably be willing to open up the joint for a couple of the weekday night games when I'm sure I'll be around, and whoever else could host on the other nights. But then people might get confused as to where they're supposed to go. Eh, we'll figure it out.

tim said...

first JoS post where I'm officially legal for everything in every country. Fuck USA and their drinking age.

Jere said...

piece o shit Wang gets a DP with the bases loaded to end the bottom of the 7th. Still 2-1 them.

Jere said...

Foulke gives up a Melk Dong, and it's 3-1 going bottom 9.

Jere said...

3-1, Yanks win. Rays lost, so we're still in first by a game.

laura k said...

Happy Birthday Tim!

Storms rolled through here at midnight. They were okay. I left the house too late with my camera, got to my shooting spot, then realized I forgot my memory card. Went home, got it, and by the time I was near my spot again, it started to rain. So, I went back home and set up in my garage. It was the first time I tried to shoot lightning with my new camera, so all I was trying to do was get a good feel for it.
