Guess I sound like a US-centric American!

Yes, you do, albeit a nice one who is considering this for maybe the first time.

All those peoples are Americans. You live in the United States. The "of America" part is the continent. You share that continent with many other countries.

OK, I will re-think my assumptions about the term American. If other North and South Americans use the term self-descriptively, then I stand corrected.

i bet youk strikes out and breaks his silence

laura k said...

that would be sweet. or splendid.

laura k said...

Ofer said...

Ofer, they may be Americans in the geographic sense, but if the term is not used by anyone that way, then does it really have that meaning? I am trying to think of an analogy, but having a problem thinking of one.

You know, I've never really heard of it outside of the "hey, we're Americans too" conversation. It's possible that it wouldn't be an issue and noone would use it if people from the US wouldn't call themselves that. I do know that people here get offended by it, whether it's because of an anti-US bias or not. I have heard people refer to themselves as latin American a lot. There is a sort of community feeling between the Latin American countries

Rays are like our little brother, so they are idiots. Of course they are good compared to all other teams but when they play against the really good teams they falter. They aren't awesome yet.

laura k said...

In my old neighbourhood in NYC, poeple referred to Dominicans and Americans. American meant white. No matter that many of the Latino people they were talking about may have been US citizens.

Everyone did this, on both sides of the language divide. I hated it (quietly, to myself).

laura k said...

Of course they are good compared to all other teams but when they play against the really good teams they falter.

Stats on that, please? And pls compare to our record against "really good teams".

OK, checked out the Behemoth. Looks like a classic coaster, not too high, but pretty fast. Looks like 2-3 rides I've done already. B&M make good coasters, though, so it might be pretty cool

Andy, we're not talking about how to define Americans, we're talking about how people from other American countries don't like people from the US appropriating the name American as only their own.

andy said...

wasn't i being a shiny example of that bad behavior?

andy said...

america is part of our name. it is not a part of any other country's name. Don't you think they are just slamming evil america more than actually caring about the name thing?

I have seen people whose great-grandparents came from Spain refer to themselves on law school applications as "Hispanic-American," which technically they are. But when asked on college/law school applications, the category is assumed to refer to people from under-represented minorities, not European-Americans. I have also seen colleagues scoff at applications from Israelis who self-describe as Asian or Middle Easternfor the same reason (to count as a diversity application). These colleagues do not consider Israelis to be "minorities" for purposes of diversity.

Sometimes the labels are not meant literally even if they apply literally.

Ofer said...

I wouldn't know what style unless you gave me some to choose from.

laura k said...

Who's "our"? Maybe you mean "your".

But no, I think people care about this. I've heard it too often to think otherwise.

And if they're slamming the US, it's well deserved to the nth degree.

andy said...

tampa reminds me of the late season rockies of last year.

allan said...

You have to hear these Baltimore anncrs about the "unbelievable" ability of this team to hit doubles.

Ofer said...

And anyway, why would an Israeli not "diversify" a college campus? If you're talking about low economical and social background Israelis might not fit, but for diversity's sake they definitely do. It's a whole different culture from the US one.

Amy said...

I agree, Ofer, but you should see the reactions this gets from people who somehow think Israelis do not deserve any special treatment.

laura k said...

It depends on the purpose of the question. Is it diversity for the sake of diversity? Which I think is a very laudable goal. Or is it diversity of economic need?

But when it comes to applications, ppl use whatever they can. Everyone inflates their resumes, including the hardships they've faced, when it suits them. Or most people seem to.

andy said...

Timlin owed Millar some money from 04 so this is how he repays him.

laura k said...

Andy, whether or not you're kidding, STFU.

I like some of them, and don't like some of them. Really depends. As for Iran... that's a long story.

andy said...

Sorry just trying to take the political pulse on this blog since we got all political with nationalism mixed in. How else do you ask people their opinion on such matters or do we just not talk about it?

laura k said...

Oh god Timlin don't do this to us.

laura k said...

Amy said...

Historically, diversity was affirmative action---to assist under-represented minorities who had faced past discrimination get into schools---primarily African-Americans, but also Latino/a Americans. Once the Supreme Court started striking down affirmative action as discriminatory, schools started using "diversity" as the basis for accomplishing similar goals. But diversity can mean anything: economic, religious, nationality, race, etc.

TIMLIN SUCKS.

That was for Jere.

You didn't say what do people think about Israel politically. You said what do people think about Israelis.

Do you think people on this blog have an opinion about Americans?

Do you not understand the difference between having an opinion about American people and having an opinion about the US politically?

If you don't understand the difference, do yourself a favour and don't answer.

Ofer said...

Not unless it is what they think about the USA as a whole.

There's a difference between what you think about the US and what you think about people from the US. It may seem pedantic, but most people really make that mistake, in thinking as well as in talking. So it's important to point it out

allan said...

Not unless it is what they think about the USA as a whole.

When has this ever been done at this blog? Or L's blog for that matter? When? Ever?

Why the asshole pose tonight, anyway?

laura k said...

Amy, I didn't mean specifically about schools and affirmative action. In Canada, we talk a lot about diversity for diversity's sake - multiculturalism. It's an important (and much-debated) value here.

I guess the fact that I cut the corner and asked about the Political decision of Israel to attack Iran without stating that I was speaking of the Israeli government not the people. Around the world they do call people who are still in the US, Americans. They also, refer to the governmental decisions made by the US government as what the Americans did. If you cannot see that then you are blind with hatred for what I do believe is a fucked government just like you.

Benjamin said...

Water.

laura k said...

Many people on this blog oppose policies of the US government. That has nothing to do what we think of Americans as people. Hopefully we judge each of those people as individuals.

Amy said...

I was talking about admissions diversity since that's where I have seen those labels applied "creatively."

OK, Pap finishes the job. Amazing. He gets another save for that, I assume.

Hey, I oppose policies of the US government, but I love Americans.

Hmm, it seems we are all now using Americans to refer to US citizens. :)

Yeah, save for Papelbon.

I don't love Americans and I don't hate Americans. I love all good people who want peace. I don't need to distinguish Americans from any other people.

Andy, you are a colossal asshole tonight.

Good night all.

Advice for Andy:
Log out and sober up.

andy said...

differing paths to get tot he same point do tend to make people angry. I am not in disagreement with your distaste for the government of my country. I do think that I was on-topic when asking about what i asked about when I did. I did not mean it to be a slam on Israeli's. I apologize for speaking about non-baseball stuff here. my sarcasm does not fare well when speaking on non-baseball stuff here. I will refrain in the future.

Amy said...

I didn't mean I love ALL Americans. I meant many people I love are Americans. Even Americans from other countries in the western hemisphere.

andy said...

Not drinking and i did not bring up Israelis. I do think that USA and Israel have similar approaches to national security albeit unwarranted sometimes on our part. We talk soo much about how much America sucks at world relations. I was just expanding that some. sorry.

andy said...

Oh and you slam my country's government, i am USAican. Should I be offended?

allan said...

Not drinking? I was giving you an out there.

Your first post -- which followed a long, serious discussion by several other posters -- was this:

What is the board policy on Israelis?
They are gonna blow up Iran soon. Is that frowned upon here?

Are you telling me you can't see the problem with that comment?

laura k said...

Be offended if you are offended, and not if you're not. Use your own mind to judge that.

As you well know, at least half the game thread is non-baseball all the time.

allan said...

Oh and you slam my country's government, i am USAican. Should I be offended?

Yeah, go be offended.

I don't give a shit.

allan said...

P.S. I spent 42 of my 45 years in the USA. I'll say anything I want -- good or bad -- about it.

I see you were slamming other governments. What gives you that right, huh?

allan said...

Even if I spent only one day of my life in the US -- or none -- I could criticize it. Why not?

andy said...

Should have said THE Israeli government. You are anti-war, I am not far behind you. We slam USA on war activity, people were talking about Israelis and the USA arrogance of calling ourselves Americans. In the past anti war stuff has come out. anti american government stuff too. I am still in this country, I am not offended by all of that. Why should I expect someone from Israel to be offended by talk about their country's stance on war? I do seriously apologize though. My approach is not good for this audience and that is my fault for pushing it.

andy said...

I am sorry again I am not getting my point across. I am ok with criticizing my own and any other government. Why am I chastised for asking what I asked? If ofer is Israeli then good, he can intelligently and with experience answer. I was asking that question to see if it was a bad thing to talk about more though. It was. Instead of saying, "We feel on this board that such and such and so and so is this." You all got heated and angry.

andy said...

Edited question then:
What is your opinion of the Israeli Government stance on attacking another country who threatened them?
Would you be against that action? Would it throw the middle east into a huge war?

Benjamin said...

MFY - 0
OAK -

Amy said...

Andy, you have to know that what you said was inflammatory. Who said Israel is going to "blow up" Iran? And do you think Israelis would unilaterally support such an action any more than all US citizens support what is going on in Iraq?

I did not bring up Israelis for any reason other than to give an example of how labels get misapplied or misinterpreted, as with the use of American for US citizens. So we were not talking about Israel or Israelis.

Amy said...

As far as I can tell, the only country threatening to attack another is Iran, which continues to insist that Israel has no right to exist. I oppose almost any use of force, but if Israel decided that there was an immminent threat and acted to protect itself, that would be far more understandable than the US's attack on Iraq when there was no such threat against our security.

allan said...

Your first post

What is the board policy on Israelis?

sounds nothing like what you just wrote:

What is your opinion of the Israeli Government ...

***

I'm going to ignore all the other shit you wrote like:

Without the USA you would be living in Mexico's hat. Be thankful we are down here.

andy said...

True Amy but statements were made recently out of Israel that they were not going to stand by and allow Iran to develop nukes. They would employ any means necessary to stop them. How do you suppose they will try to stop them? War?

On a side note, When can we hold a country's citizens responsible for the actions of their government?

andy said...

I was being overly sarcastic and again I am sorry for that. Bad approach. Poor judgment. Why do I feel I just got caught using enzyte?

Amy said...

Andy, every candidate for President of the UNITED STATES has said the same thing about not allowing Iran to develop nuclear weapons. Why single out Israel? If any country has reason to worry about Iran, it is Israel.

Benjamin said...

Fucking HGH.

Amy said...

OK, modding back on, so debate over.

andy said...

Sarcasm: Rays suck.
Real opinion: Rays good, worried, admired them for a couple years now, enjoy the new rivalry.

Sarcasm: America's hat thing.
Real opinion: Trying to talk about the issues in a different way while bringing about some new conversation on topics that get shied away from.

I did get some good conversation going though. Don't think for a second that because you moved militantly to Canada that people who do not leave the USA are not as disgusted with this bullshit as you are. I am. I just choose to speak about it in a strange and oft misunderstood way. I mean no harm.

allan said...

Don't think for a second that because you moved militantly to Canada that people who do not leave the USA are not as disgusted with this bullshit as you are. I am.

I have never felt that way. Never.

There are many people in the US who either lack the job skills or money to move, or have kids ... or any number of reasons.

L has emailed with many of them.

Militantly? Not sure we did that.

laura k said...

Sarcasm: Rays suck.

This was sarcasm? There was absolutely no indication you were being sarcastic. When people challenged you on it, you defended it. If it was sarcasm, why would you do that?

Perhaps because it wasn't sarcasm, but now you're embarrassed that you acted like an idiot, so you're backpedaling.

laura k said...

Andy, neither of us think that. Everyone we love in the US - friends and family - are all horrified at what's happening.

You sound like a completely different person now. It's very difficult to believe you were being sarcastic, but if you were, perhaps you would refrain from that in the future, because it's not coming through.

As I said earlier, it sounded along the lines of, "What's the board's position on those gay folks? Do we think they're out spreading AIDS?"

Benjamin said...

ESPN is playing up the Cubs' complete game like it was a no-hitter.

laura k said...

Allan, I think militant just means radical. To many people it was a radical thing to do.

To me it was just wanting to be happier. But I realize a lot of people see it as a radical act.

andy said...

I say militantly because you moved not because you have always loved canada but because you were tired of america right? It was exaggeration.
That is just my style. its how i debate.

When can the american people be blamed for how the country is? doesn't the media play a huge part? Why don't the news casters come on everyday and demand truth? Everyday.
The people don't demand it. We just sit complacently by as the vast majority of Americans truly believe that Obama or McCain will fix america. Hell in Europe they are at times violently protesting gas prices. We just quietly complain.

All americans are at fault. As a people we suck. We worry about where the nearest starbucks is. I just want the people of a country to be held accountable for the actions of their government. Not for each specific action but for the non-action of the people to fix anything.

Be careful how many people you invite to Canada. These are the same people that allowed things to get to where we are now.

laura k said...

I did get some good conversation going though.

Wrong.

It was annoying, obnoxious and unpleasant. It was not "good conversation".

Unless that was more of your mysterious sarcasm?

laura k said...

Be careful how many people you invite to Canada.

WTF? I'm not the Immigration Ministry. Canada decides that, not me.

If you blame yourself, go ahead. I did everything I could to stop it and so did many people I know. If you think "we as a people" suck, I hope you're doing something more than throwing blame around. Somehow I doubt it.

laura k said...

I just want the people of a country to be held accountable for the actions of their government.

You would be right, if the country were a democracy. Are the Chinese people responsible for what their govt does? The people in the US are passive becuase they've been taught over and over and over and over that what they do makes no difference. They are utterly powerless to change things.

laura k said...

I'm out of here again, the 3rd or 4th time I'm announcing that.

Andy, I realize you don't have to take advice from the likes of me, but you might want to consider changing your posting style. Communication is difficult enough when people say what they mean. Saying what you don't mean and thinking everyone is going to know that is asking for a lot of grief.

Good night!

andy said...

I am being real now because you rattled me out of my sarcastic shell. On another forum I often times argue an entire side of a point that I completely disagree with. For me seeing the opposing side through their eyes helps me to understand it better. In baseball talk I will say things as far out as the Rays suck and stand by it. Over the internet in only a few quick words it is very hard to see my smirk. I seriously would femininely hug Jacoby though. I do think Lugo is finished. Timlin too. I don't think I have ever presented myself as a serious person or an authority on any subject here. I am a lot different in person that I come off on here. You should see me argue with real republicans or democrats. I somehow am able to defend America while at the same time trashing it.

Any backpedaling I am doing now is backing off of my idiot behavior and am now explaining myself. I don't want you to dislike me but if I thought you were worthless and lost in the discussion I would just walk away.

I recently suggested to my wife that we move to canada. She is uber-america. She is coming around though. Realizing that things need to truly change.

No idea if anybody will bother to read this (does anyone go through old game threads?), and maybe that's better, since it's just continuing a conversation it seems nobody was enjoying, but I wanted to make one thing clear:
I was not offended. I'm not offended when people say way worse things about Israel. I say way worse things about Isreal sometimes, either joking or seriously. And the subject of Iran and all of Israel's history and wars has come up a lot while travelling and I always embrace it, as long as I feel that the other person is really listening and not just waiting for me to finish talking so he can attack. The question today was just phrased badly, so I reacted to that.
Anyway, whatever. The Sox won. Maybe we can talk about atomic bombs and world wars tomorrow.

laura k said...

(does anyone go through old game threads?)

Some people do. :)

I'm glad you weren't offended, and I feel the same way, regarding what countries do.

It was his use of the word "Israelis" that bothered me, as opposed to Israel the country.

Among other things!

laura k said...

This is the key for me, too. I discuss thorny topics all the time - if it's really a discussion and not just a screaming match.
