G72: Red Sox 9, Reds 0

Red Sox - 122 031 000 - 9 11 1
Reds - 000 000 000 - 0 6 2
Mr. Homer B. did not disappoint.

Coco Crisp hit a two-run shot in the second. And one batter after Jacoby Ellsbury drilled a four-bagger to start the third, J.D. Drew got it on and banged a dong. Bailey threw 62 pitches in 2.1 innings and was gone after 13 batters.

Crisp drove in two more runs in the fifth. Dustin Pedroia also went deep, in the sixth.

Beckett (7-6-0-2-6, 98) was strong. David Aarsdma and Mike Timlin each threw a scoreless inning.

In the first inning, Ellsbury singled. He stole second on the first pitch to Pedroia, caught his breath on the second, and stole third on the third pitch. Neither play was close. The first theft was #32 and it set a new Red Sox rookie record.

The Marlins beat the Rays 9-3, so the East lead is back to 2.5.

***

Josh Beckett (4.22, 104 ERA+) / Homer Bailey (6.30, 70 ERA+)

Bailey - part of the All-Time Unfortunately-Named Pitching Staff than includes Bob Walk and Grant Balfour.

Manny is still out, but Lugo and Varitek are back in the lineup.

I still get a good feeling from seeing that Beckett's going today. He's not what he was last year, but I feel like he has access to that groove at times.

andy said...

Are the ESPN guys off base when they agreed with me that the Rays may make a trade for Griffey, an old player? Rumor has it they give up youngters and get just an old guy.

Zenslinger said...

And I guess we don't get to see Bronson...unless it's on the basepaths again.

allan said...

"The Twins have been carrying 13 pitchers forcing them to use starter Kevin Slowey as a pinch-runner. Is there a more inappropriate last name for a pinch-runner?"

*****

Aren't the guys Tampa has in RF/DH hitting better than Griffey?

Someone on a broadcast said recently said the Rays could use a veteran presence that can "teach them how to win". They seem to have got the hang of that already.

andy said...

I just think the rays will get greedy when they see the post season is within reach.

Ofer said...

I think Beckett will hit an XBH at some point today

allan said...

They might get greedy, but they may also know you should not covet inferior things.

Checking OPS+:

Griffey - 97

Hinske - 128
Gross - 115
Gomes - 106
Floyd - 124

allan said...

Beckett batted .429 in 2006!

Ofer said...

As a Sox fan, I'm rooting for that trade, if the Reds can get a blue chipper for Griffey's name and past performance

Ofer said...

Beckett batted .429 in 2006!

I just remembered Bronson's first few starts for the Reds, when he had more HRs than Wily Mo. That was pretty funny.

allan said...

Plus Griffey is 38 - how much longer does he have? The Rays are a young team that will be contending for awhile.

I'll be surprised if they bother with him and shocked if they give up anything of note.

Jack Marshall said...

I think it's time to admit that keeping Coco turned out to be a great move. An example of an injury---to Kielty---working to the team's advantage.

FSN on mlbtv = mute.

Joe Grav said...

oh joy, lugo is back

Joe Grav said...

so that's like a leadoff double

Rob said...

Boof. New Red Sox Rookie Stolen Base Record.

Joe Grav said...

Too easy.

allan said...

new sox rookie record for SB - 32

Joe Grav said...

Wow.

allan said...

leadoff triple

Joe Grav said...

What was teh record Remy had?

Ofer said...

Was Pedroia trying to suicide squeeze?

Joe Grav said...

1-0

Rob said...

Think about how crazy it is, the first two batters of the game today.

Ellsbury singles.
Pedoria hits a sacrifice fly, and Ellsbury scores.

allan said...

Slowell.

allan said...

Steal 2B on 1st pitch
Catch breath on 2nd pitch
Steal 3B on 3rd pitch

The OC's little brother.

Rob said...

Older brother.

Rob said...

Another E6.

Youk usually digs those out, though.

Kim said...

Lugo could've landed from his jump, eaten a sandwich, then walked over to first and touched the bag himself. Instead, he pulls a Lugo.

Kim said...

Heyyyy, It's me Jere! As Kim! I'll fix that.....

allan said...

MFY go 3 games over .500 for the first time this season so ... CBS thinks they are getting hot!

... "gotting hot" actually.

Rob said...

Does gotting hot mean they're getting hot but they're soon going to not be getting hot anymore?

Jere said...

Okay, here I am.

So, have the people who said "you can't bat Ellsbury leadoff because he'll steal too many bases and Ortiz will never get to bat" all been...I don't know, had some sense shaken into them?

andy said...

I do not remember so well from my childhood but did Henderson or Coleman steal so frequently? How about stealing 3rd during the same AB as when they stole 2nd? It just seems this guy is stealing a lot more frequently, like every time on base.

Rob said...

Is that supposed to be along the same lines that a home run is a rally killer?

laura k said...

Damn, I'm missing the game because of a stupid lawyer's stupid computer troubles.

andy said...

Jere was that the better half before?

allan said...

odd typo for a non-idiot to make. the e and o are nowhere near each other.

(sorta like making a "mistake" with the b and s and typing osama for obama -- which has been happening with frequency on cable tv and newspaper headlines.)

andy said...

Why doesn't lugo steal more? What is his value at this point? How does he stack up to Griffey offensively?

Rob said...

Yeah, because clearly the b and the s (fittingly b and s) are right next to each other on the keyboard.

Jere said...

Rickey once had 13 SBs in 5 games in '83.

allan said...

In 1982, Rickie stole 130 bases and was caught 42 times, so he ran quite a lot.

76%. It looks like whatever value he added by stealing was negated by being caught so often. Or he broke even for the entire season -- and he added nothing with 130 SB!

Jere said...

Andy, yes.

Jere said...

on the better half Q

allan said...

You think about Griffey at SS? :>)

andy said...

any comparison for the Navajo Hall of Famer this year?

andy said...

Wow just wow. stealing 170 times in the year. Thats amazing. What is ellsbury's pace now?

BTW what is the prevailing method for figuring out a player's pace?

andy said...

I am thinking the chimp form the movie Ed that was on HBO this morning could play better SS then lugo.

Rob said...

The eye-black is eye-blue today for father's day. Looks more like my high school days during spirit week or those pep rallies.

Jere said...

Andy-Lugo did steal a lot last year.

andy said...

Well if the Rays get Griffey we had better get Bonds.

andy said...

Lugo was not completely done being satisfactory last year. He is done now. He should be stealing as much as Jacoby with all the key times he gets on base.

andy said...

Dick Pole.

SoSock said...

HI guys.
Came in to catch a little of the game before heading out again.
My cable guide says Boston @ Cinc. on TBS, but it's blacked out.
WTF?!
They think more of us will bother to drive from NC to Ohio just because we can't watch it on TV?

andy said...

Oooh

Jere said...

Yeah Coco! ("down the line," Don?)

Rob said...

BOOM!!!

LET THE DONGS OUTSIDE!

allan said...

EXTRA CRISPY DONG!!

Joe Grav said...

coco!

laura k said...

Whew, finally made it here.

Just in time to hear an OCOC DONG.

How did the first run score?

andy said...

That was pretty. He is winning his way back into my heart.

That's Dick Pole's Homer Bailey for you.

Joe Grav said...

ellsbury in on a sac fly by d-peds

Jere said...

Lugo should forget about stealing bases and try stealing Drew's bat.

andy said...

How many HR's does Manny have? Lugo errors?

Benjamin said...

These things just don't happen.

laura k said...

Oh, scrolling through I thought Kim had been here. But no, it was only Jere signed in wrong. The old computer-sharing-identity-change.

Hi Andy, welcome home. :)

Rob said...

How did the first run score?

Ellsbury singled, stole second, stole third, then Pedroia hit a sac fly to drive him in.

laura k said...

ellsbury in on a sac fly by d-peds

this was how the run scored? thanks.

did my boy steal yet today?

and hi joe :)

Jere said...

"How many HR's does Manny have? Lugo errors?"

About 500 each.

laura k said...

Oops, Ish answered while I was typing. Thanks!

andy said...

Happy Sunday Laura.

Rob said...

This umpire - sounds like he's saying "CAW" for every called strike.

laura k said...

did joshie almost get a hit there? i love when pitchers hit.

Rob said...

Beckett showing his own prodigious power. Only he hit it right at somebody.

Jere said...

Kim was using my computer earlier, because she spilled water on her keyboard--and it's largely effed up. It really does happen!

andy said...

Ok pause. I need to go shopping now. Will be watching on my phone.

Joe Grav said...

Hi L.

Happy father's day to all.

laura k said...

Thanks Andy. Sunday is only semi-happy because I'm at work. But I am 8.5 hours away from VACATION.

I've decided vacation officially starts when I get home from work tonight. Even tho we don't leave til Tues a.m.

allan said...

2B had to make a little leap for the liner.

Joe Grav said...

I'm infamous for starting my vacations two days early.

I once spilled a mug of tea on my keyboard. Fried it.

Joe Grav said...

I'm feeling a really solid outing by Beckett tonight.

Joe Grav said...

er, this afternoon

allan said...

bailey - 52 pitches in 2 innings

Damn, Tala and Cody forgot all about father's day.

I'm infamous for starting my vacations two days early.

It's definitely the way to go. Packing and getting there are part of the fun.

Rob said...

votto = canadian (toronto)

Works out well that he's wearing red and white.

allan said...

bailey - 52 pitches in 2 innings

The amount fo pitches he has thrown so far today is STAGGERING!!!!

laura k said...

i knocked a glass of wine into my laptop keyboard during a game.

I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

laura k said...

staggering, what's the joke?

Jere said...

ok, Joe, please un-jinx Josh

allan said...

Fox guy Thom Brennman said it a lot yesterday. He's also doing the game on FSN now.

It seems like it would be #1 on the Thom Drinking Game

Rob said...

So yesterday was a Reds guy and a Red Sox guy on Fox. Seems like that would have been sort of interesting. But I like my little road trip better.

Jere said...

Wait a minute, how I have not thought of this yet? Bailey! Like the WKRP in Cincinnati character! Playing for Cincy. The weird thing is, I made reference to her recently in a thread here.

Jere said...

Then you have Johnny "Fever" Bench, of course.

Jere said...

And Andy Philips! Andy! They've got two current characters from the show on the team. I love it. (More than anyone else, I'm guessing.)

Jere said...

DoNGsBury

Rob said...

No need for stolen bases THIS go-around, when you can just hit a DONG!

allan said...

rats - no SB chance there

Benjamin said...

No stolen bases. :(

laura k said...

All the way LBJ!

(I checked the thread and thought I missed it... but now, it just hadn't come through the tubes yet.)

allan said...

Guessing?

:>)

Rob said...

ON FIRE!!!!!

Talk about letting the dongs outside!!!!

Jere said...

Dustin with the classic "see a HR, fly out trying to hit a HR on the next pitch" a la Don Balylor '85.

Oh! But Drew gets a dong on the NEXT pitch! A la Drew '08..

allan said...

Red Sox now 1/3 towards something that has never been done in AL history.

laura k said...

It seems like it would be #1 on the Thom Drinking Game

staggering is a good word for a drinking game

ANOTHER DONG!!! Holy shit. This is fun!

Rob said...

Dick Pole. Talking about unfortunate names...

laura k said...

Bailey is as advertised, eh?

Benjamin said...

Four runs next inning?

Jere said...

Dong Bailey indeed.

Jere said...

Castig musta been psyched that last dong went over the Duke sign. (son=Duke Castiglione)

allan said...

Four runs next inning?

Nope.

Jere said...

what, 9 dongs in a game?

allan said...

bailey still muttering to himself in the dugout.

laura k said...

I know, but I guess I shouldn't say?

laura k said...

I knew right away but I didn't think it was a guessing game.

allan said...

Nope.

... I don't want to jinx it.

Jere said...

I think I know it--does it require Beckett to circumnavigate the bases on a single play?

laura k said...

Nope, not that.

laura k said...

Although I love the euphemism.

allan said...

Stop guessing! You'll know soon enough.

Jere said...

okay. well they're 1/3rd of the way to those things, too. 9 dongs; 9 dongs, 1 by each batter in the starting lineup.

laura k said...

Do you know what's happening to me from gamethreads? I'm starting to think people look like their avatars. Jere is a wide-eyed guy with goggles on his head, Ish is Asian, and wears his hat to one side.

I know Allan is not Manny and I know I am not a purple-haired cyclops.

Jere said...

Okay....I totally know it now....you have mentioned this before. And the key clue was that the third inning wasn't over when you said it. I'll shut up now! Then again, I could still be wrong. Feel free to delete this comment if you feel it will cause problems.

Jere said...

Lowell about as close to center field as he'll ever get on that catch.

allan said...

You think Phil is a little lamb?

allan said...

Krisp.

Lugo and Beckett -- not good odds for my thing ...

allan said...

FSN: stop showing the assholes on the jet skis!!

allan said...

c'mon lyndon. do it.

Jere said...

Aw! Single woulda made it .444

allan said...

shit - sox will not be the first team in AL history to score in all 9 innings today

allan said...

i was going to post that: 44%!

Jere said...

Okay, what's the most innings one team has scored in in a game? Has a team ever scored in 9 or more innings in an extra-inning game?

laura k said...

I had work, missed some stuff. I see Allan's dream has died yet again.

laura k said...

I do not think Phil is a little lamb.

But I do sometimes think Amy is a little kid.

(Unintentional pun, I swear.)

allan said...

a few AL teams have scored in all 8 and won at home (so no 9th)

3 NL teams since 1900 have done it in all 9 as an away team (rockies did it around 2000, actually).

i have a folder with some games with the fewest number of 0 in the linescore. you may have to wait until july for that stuff, though!

i love crazy linescores - one of my faves:

KCR: 000 000 000 3
NYY: 000 000 000 4

From 92 or 96.

Jere said...

also, has a team ever scored in every inning of a less-than nine-inning official game? I gotta figure there are some five-skis in a rain shortened game.

allan said...

I see Allan's dream has died yet again.

Sigh ...

allan said...

if i knew how to search retrosheet files, i could find out. but i don't know how.

allan said...

i think there was a game where a visiting team got 1 run in each of 8 innings and a 0 in the other inning.

Jere said...

i really wanna know how the most amount of half-innings where runs scored in one extra-inning game. By one team, and by both teams.

allan said...

i really wanna know how the most amount of half-innings where runs scored in one extra-inning game. By one team, and by both teams.

okay - i'll post some of the games i have tomorrow.

allan said...

Homer Bailey, meet Error Lugo.

SoSock said...

Stopped bzck in for a few.
Caught up on the thread - love all the dong talk....or at least the fact that there are dongs to talk about.
I was guessing a dong by the whole line-up myself.
What the hell is the score now, anyway - still blacked out on TBS

allan said...

BOS - 122 0
CIN - 000 0

..

FLA - 030
FKR - 000

..

NYY - 00
HOU - 00

laura k said...

i'll post some of the games i have tomorrow.

*wince*

*imagines doing all the errands and packing herself*

allan said...

ON FIRE = ON BASE

allan said...

oh yeah -- tomorrow is not sunday!

maybe not, then.

laura k said...

Castro-bashing on the radio now. Castig seems to be a unusually fair and non-propaganda-like for a radio guy.

Jere said...

if that guy stretched it would've been close!

laura k said...

whew. thank you.

laura k said...

slowell w/ an infield hit???

Jere said...

Wait, so is he bashing him or not?

laura k said...

O'Brien was bashing, Castig was not.

Jere said...

beat LA chant in Cincy

allan said...

gotta be an E7 to allow slowell to take third, right?

laura k said...

I've noticed this several times. O'Brien will give the standard rah-rah, pro-US sports radio line, and Castig will rephrase it more neutrally.

Eg. DO'B is telling a story about Lowell's father not shaking Castro's hand. "And they said, then you must get on the bus and leave, and he did, and proud of it."

Castig: There is a lot of emotion and controversy in the Cuban-American community about Castro, a lot of mixed feelings.

laura k said...

I heard him do this once before re soldiers/war. O'B was in "welcoming home heroes" mode and Castig said something very carefully phrased to be neutral, and said something about people "choosing not to support the war".

I can't remember the exact wording, but it struck me b/c it was so unusual. I really appreciated it.

allan said...

ahhhh, double-switch -- real baseball!

allan said...

when trupe started talking about vets and war, i could not yank the earphones off my head quick enough.

laura k said...

when trupe started talking about vets and war, i could not yank the earphones off my head quick enough.

yup, that's the usual. the old pro-war = neutral, all else = political.

castig really stands out.

Jere said...

eight-zip. we are kicking butt.

laura k said...

This is turning into a laugher!

ococ = rbi king

allan said...

trupe seemed especially bad, reading letters he had received .. way over the top for a baseball broadcast, i thought.

(but then everyone loved the invasion back then...)

Jere said...

Nice job by Castig! He should enjoy the galley we're sending him...

Benjamin said...

MFYs still up 3-0. They might reach 4 over .500.

laura k said...

(but then everyone loved the invasion back then...)

Too bad they didn't all volunteer.

laura k said...

Nice job by Castig! He should enjoy the galley we're sending him...

I hope he mentions it!

We sent Remy a tiny (fake) copy of 1918 for little Wally. It was when they were really into the Wally stuff in the booth.

We thought it was a great idea (mine!), but they never mentioned it.

Jere said...

I keep finding 5 inning games where a team scored in 4 of the 5, stuff like that. I still haven't found any shortened games where a team scored in each inning. Gone through lots of years of Sox game logs.

allan said...

yeah, it was a tiny color copy of the cover glued onto a pack of tiny post-it notes, so it also worked like pages.

thanks for nothing, remy.

Jere said...

That's a great idea--the fake tiny book.

We know Castig is on board with us because my mom has met him twice and he knows all about it. We may even get him to to an ad for us. Which would be amazing.

allan said...

LOTS of teams score in 7 or 8, but 9 is ultra-rare

Jere said...

you should've done a flip book on the post-it pages. That woulda kept him entertained....

allan said...

yes, it was. we sent him a real book too, at the same time.

allan said...

fish 6-0 over the rays

Benjamin said...

Twirlypedro.

allan said...

MFYs still up 3-0. They might reach 4 over .500.

Why, they'd be unstoppable!!!

allan said...

rays get a run! fish 6-1 (5th)

laura k said...

We know Castig is on board with us because my mom has met him twice and he knows all about it.

That's what you need. This was sent cold, with some follow-up emails.

Although I get several big hits that way, so it was certainly possible.

We may even get him to to an ad for us. Which would be amazing.

Yeah! I hope so.

laura k said...

twirlypedro?

Jere said...

8/18/79, Sox win an official game and score in every inning in which they bat. (5 offensive innings). Rice and Bob Watson with dongs for the Sox.

5 innings, not that hard to do, but still fun!

Benjamin said...

Ha ha.

Jere said...

44.4 repeating percent! Of the way to nine dongs, one by each guy.

Benjamin said...

Awful lot of empty seats behind home plate.

laura k said...

dusty dong!

allan said...

missed the fy dong.

and i got work.

laura k said...

44.4...% is what, again? sox who have hit HRs today?

Benjamin said...

Is that a two-error play?

Jere said...

The crows seemed to be calling his name, thought Caw.

Jere said...

right, 4/9ths of the way to 9 dongs

Benjamin said...

No more Drew?

Benjamin said...

Still 3-0 MFYs.

Benjamin said...

Does Cincinnati have a very strict policy against letting fans move down into empty seats?

Benjamin said...

The camera keeps truping these flyouts.

Benjamin said...

So just me in here, eh.

Benjamin said...

Better go do some laundry, I guess.
