Something Else #11: White Stripes

Today's Off-Day Musical Guest: the White Stripes.

Jack White and Meg White formed the White Stripes in 1997. The Detroit duo play a raw mix of rock, punk and blues -- generally only guitar and drums. For years, the duo presented themselves as brother and sister, but they were actually married. Fun Fact: Jack, born John Gillis, took Meg's last name. They divorced in 2000, but continued recording and performing together.

What I'm posting: 1999 FM broadcast, two 2001 John Peel BBC sessions and a July 2007 concert at Madison Square Garden. And other stuff!

0-0 after 4. Hochevar has only given up 1 hit. Mussina, 2 hits.

Great stuff! Keeping with the rock/blues duo thing, have you listened to the Black Keys at all?

DONG. 2-0 KC in the seventh.

Jere said...

Royals hold the lead for exactly zero outs. 2-2.

Jere said...

Guillen dongs off Mo! Two games in the last three Mo gives up a dong in a tie game in the ninth! 3-2 KC, still top 9.

Rivera gives up a leadoff HR to KC for the second time in this four-game series. Can the Yanks come back again and produce a walkoff hit, or is it back to .500 with them?

A-Rod starts by singling to the pitcher.

Allan, REM 6/6/08 in Chicago is up on DIME, looks decent.

Soira BARELY holds on. Two on and two out versus Chad Moeller and he hit him! But got Milk Dud to ground weakly to first.

Jere said...

Yanks rally (which to them = swinging bunt, walk, HBP) to load bases in ninth, but lose as Melky weakly grounds out! 3-2 KC final.

Well, at least they kept the rally going, rather than killing it.

What little I have heard of the Black Keys I like. Should hear more.

Zen: Already got it! Man, the oldies in the set lists are blowing my mind!

And the MFYs fall back to .500. So sad.

Meanwhile Mauer's within 50,000 votes of Tek in All Star balloting. I'm sure it's nice to have the honor, but I'm not sure Tek's knees agree.

Lugo's within a million votes of Jetes. What's up with that.

Electronic voting can cause very strange results.

Re that 6/6 REM gig:

Very nice quality ... and the opening is dynamite!

These Days
Begin The Begin

What's The Frequency, Kenneth?

Fuckin' A!

I have been following the set lists on remring.com -- they have not yet played Radio Free Europe.

I hope someone makes a CD of the best of these older tunes when the tour is done -- maybe in the order of the albums.

I think I have the Nero program to do it myself, but I have no idea how. Maybe I should read up.

By the way, remember all those MFY fans who were poohpoohing Leter's nohitter by saying "yeah, but it was against Kansas City"? The same KC we swept that series? The MFYs just dropped two of four against KC at home.

Incredible variety on the old stuff from REM, indeed. They must have about 40 songs rehearsed.

The Stripes I came to late. I really liked the Elephant album. Really, really liked it. There was something very immediate and genuine about it. I didn't feel the same about the Satan album, though. Nothing's really grabbed me of theirs -- or I haven't grabbed onto it -- since the Elephant album.

I have heard criticisms of Meg's drumming. Not sure if it's worth the hullabaloo. She might be limited but there's nothing wrong with that if it's all the music requires.

finally something else for me. love it. thanks.

White Stripes - another band my sons turned me on to.
Back in the Kazaa days of song searching (which is where I mined some of my favorite live stuff) I started seeing their name in my song library. Happened quite a bit, that business of stuff I didn't recognize mysteriously appearing. They were one of the few I held on to after my son got his own computer. Not my usual cup of tea, but the music is good and I can't stand to drink the same tea alll the time.
