G90: Yankees 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 6 0
Yankees - 010 001 00x - 2 6 0
Boston had the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the ninth. With one run already in, all they needed was a routine fly ball to tie the game against a faltering Rivera.

But Crisp took a weak hack at an 0-2 pitch and whiffed. Varitek popped up an 2-0 pitch to first base. And Lugo went down swinging at a 2-2 pitch (Rivera got a gift call on strike two).

The teams tied a major league record with a combined seven HBP -- Manny was plunked three times -- but no warnings were given.

Masterson (6-6-2-2-2, 100) pitched well enough to win, but the Sox bats were AWOL. Timlin looked strong in a perfect, nine-pitch ninth inning. The Red Sox seemed to watch a lot of Mussina's (6-4-0-1-5, 89) pitches -- they swung at 24 of 89; four of Mussina's five strikeouts were looking.

New York scored in the second on a one-out walk to Giambi and two-out singles from both Cano and Cabrera. Two singles, a wild pitch, an HBP and a sac fly made it 2-0 in the sixth.

Facing Rivera in the ninth, Drew singled to left-center. Manny was hit and Moss ran for him. Lowell lined a single to right, scoring Drew. Youkilis was hit with an 0-2 pitch and the bases were loaded with one out. But Rivera then snapped out of his funk and dispatched the next three Boston batters.

***

Justin Masterson (3.75, 114 ERA+) / Mike Mussina (3.87, 104 ERA+)

There had been some speculation that the Red Sox would bring back Clay Buchholz for this start. But it'll be Masterson, who has had more trouble with LH batters (.231/.381/.484) than RH (.163/.239/.263).

In six June starts, Masterson pitched 35.2 innings, allowing 29 hits (including 7 home runs) and 20 walks, while striking out 28 and posting a 4.54 ERA.

  5. So why all the vitriol on this site (not so much from the proprietor) toward Lugo? He doesn't jog to first; he hustles. He steals some bases. He plays hard. He has made as many amazing plays as horrible ones, and I bet he gets to balls Jeter wouldn't touch. He's solid at turning the DP. His contract? Who cares what he's paid...I don't pay it. The hatred is way, way out of proportion to his perceived weaknesses, I think. Unfair.

    ReplyDelete
  6. ken rosenthal = the human penis.

    ReplyDelete
  7. also i dont want to speak too soon, but im coming around on coco a little bit. although i still hate lugo.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The hatred is way, way out of proportion to his perceived weaknesses, I think. Unfair.

Of course it is. I suspect even the Lugo haters know they are using him as a punching bag.

I don't think it's more on this site than elsewhere, tho. Seems pretty system-wide to me.

    ReplyDelete
  9. "we acquired lugo becuase he used to 'kill the red sox'. well, he comes as advertised. he's still killing the red sox."

    ReplyDelete
  10. For whatever reasons (and some of them are good ones), he is punching bag.

He doesn't jog to first; he hustles.

No one hustles all the time. Watch enough games and you'll see everyone jog to first: Lugo, Manny, Varitek ... everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  11. he's still killing the red sox

Nix, you know that's not really true, right? He's not my favourite player by any means, but he's not killing us the way (eg) Tek is.

I'm not suggesting Lugo has earned the loyalty that Tek has, but Lugo isn't really killing.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Amusing that L and I both use punching bag at the same time.

My point is that Lugo (while a disappointment) is not nearly as horrific on the field as many fans think.

    ReplyDelete
  13. yeah, i know its not true and most of my anger towards lugo is a liitle bit of joking.
but in all honesty, i just don't like the guy.
i also dont think he's that good.

    ReplyDelete
  14. OBP:
    Pedroia - .355
    Ortiz - .354
    Lugo - .352

    ReplyDelete
  15. FY has 12 multi-hit games in his last 19 games!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Amusing that L and I both use punching bag at the same time.

I was also going to make the same comment about jogging vs. hustling. Those perceptions don't usually hold up.

I do agree that we shouldn't care how much Lugo (or any other player) makes. That should never figure into our judgements of their play, IMO.

  17. is that 3 consecutive days 'oby has struck out to lead off the game?

    ReplyDelete
  18. should be 2nd and 3rd. lets go manny you own this guy. will they walk him in the 1st? hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  19. my dad would be cheering thinking the replay was live....

    ReplyDelete
  20. that wasnt on purpose, right? according to michael kay moose if afraid to hit guys after that time he hit someone, and the guy kicked his ass and he had togo on the DL.

    ReplyDelete
  21. i'd say no intent, but manny is dark-skinned.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i hope masterson has his stuff today.

    ReplyDelete
  23. i wonder

    (a) if that story is true (kay loves fiction)

    and

    (b) if so, the asskicker was?

    ReplyDelete
  24. i dont know who the ass kicker was either, i believe it was in his O's days.

    ReplyDelete
  25. that long underhand lob was a tad lipsy!

    ReplyDelete
  26. did the ump call jeter safe on that one, too?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Doc looking a little ugly on that strikeout.
Damn, I went to the complex early to get fields ready for the big games tonight just so I could come home and catch a couple or 3 innings before I have to report back. But now it's starting to rain here, so I'd better head back to handle the clean-up after it stops.
Next to last game in the loser bracket of the district 9-10 tournament on Field 1 and on Field 3 my Big League team looks to go to 5 - 0 tonight against East Surry. Woo! Woo!
Unless our doubleheader tomorrow afternoon turns into a nightmare, I WILL be able to watch the finale.
    Go Sox, dammit!

  28. yeah fuck you abreu. antoher guy i cant stand!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I listened to pre-game today (very rare for me) and heard the interview w/ Masterson. He sounds like such a nice guy - very optimistic, happy outlook.

He said he's been shaving his head every day since the middle of high school. It started when he was Mr Clean for Halloween.

If he lets his hair grow, it grows out in an afro, and he looks 12 years old. When he was younger he felt he needed the more adult, slightly intimidating look.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Nice work by Bat Masterson to start. Well, I made it thru one anyway.
    Later

  31. yeah fuck you abreu. antoher guy i cant stand!

i don't care about him one way or the other, but his pudgy picture on gdgd sure looks like it's begging for a slap.

    ReplyDelete
  32. that long underhand lob was a tad lipsy!

I wondered about that. Radio guys described it in great detail!

Re Mussina, I think it was w/ the O's, b/c Kay has been telling that story forever.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Who the F dresses up as Mr. Clean?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Who the F dresses up as Mr. Clean?

It's actually a popular costume! Great look - bald, earring, all white clothes. Easy to do if you don't mind shaving your head.

Maybe you can do that this year.

    ReplyDelete
  35. or i could shave my head and dress up like yook?

i'll get a dead squirrel to glue to my chin.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Castig just said that yesterday Tek hit "a foul home run".

    ARGH

    ReplyDelete
  37. i cant find ANY info on that moose fight.

    ReplyDelete
  38. if you are ambitious, you could go to his game logs and look at the pbp for any game in which he hit someone. i assume someone got ejected for the fight?

    ReplyDelete
  39. "foul HR"

in tek's case, i think it okay to mention these. at this point, they are noteable accomplishments.

    ReplyDelete
  40. yay - yanks finally hit the ball past the pitcher!!!

    ReplyDelete
  41. last time i checked it was July FIFTH! those hats are ugly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. if you are ambitious

Or you could save your ambitions for something more important.

    ReplyDelete
  43. So all the umps agreed Ococ caught that ball? What a surprise.

Too bad we can't subtract those extra pitches from Bot's arm. Not to mention the NYY run.

    ReplyDelete
  44. proving michael kay is wrong and full of shit = important.

    and very easy.

    ReplyDelete
  45. i thought jd had a better arm than that WTF? giambi scoring from 2nd?

    ReplyDelete
  46. was that a weak throw or was tek too far in front of the plate?

    ReplyDelete
  47. shit!

no, kay is not worth your time and trouble. proving he is full of shit would be a full-time job.

    ReplyDelete
  48. i cant find ANY info on that moose fight.

  51. ladies and gentlemen, your world series MVP.

    ReplyDelete
  52. How can it be true that Damon has never been on the DL? Dave O'B just said that. What about the horrible head-to-head collision? How did he escape the DL after that?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Collision happened in the playoffs. I think he just missed a couple of games + an off day.

    ReplyDelete
  54. not good. we're going to need our bullpen today, and THATS not good.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Collision happened in Game 5 of 2003 ALDS (last game) on October 6.

Damon returned for ALCS Game 3 on October 11.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Collision/DL - thanks. That's convenient!

    ReplyDelete
  76. these dushbags will not prevail!

    ReplyDelete
  77. 3-2 with Yeller getting the win. How's that?

    ReplyDelete
  78. molina can't lay off those pitchouts!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. 3-2 with Yeller getting the win. How's that?

This is from the "say enough crazy shit and one day you'll be right and everyone will think you're smart" school.

    ReplyDelete
  80. well.... we had enough trouble scoring one run, let alone TWO!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Dave O'B says, "If this was the Red Sox and Tampa Bay, we'd have seen two brawls by now."

Pretty funny considering this is the Red Sox and the Yankees!

    ReplyDelete
  82. what happened to the sox that played the last two games, huh? this is the team that got swept by the (d) rays.

    ReplyDelete
  83. foghorn leghorn, then fruit bat.

    ReplyDelete
  84. Masterson did well (6-6-2-2-2); it's a shame the bats were awol.

    ReplyDelete
  85. it is important that cora get on somehow

    ReplyDelete
  86. we've given them the 2, now we got to get the 3.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Forgot to tell you something I heard yesterday, a real whopper, before I gave up on YES and went inside to get NESN.

Michael Kay was going on (and on and on) about the new Stadium and said "which the Steinbrenner family is building with their own money".

I couldn't believe it. It takes only the tiniest bit of Googling to expose this lie!

    ReplyDelete
  88. took a lot of pitches and mussina had good control.

upside is the day is masterson. oh, and our 3-run 9th inning rally!

    ReplyDelete
  89. we HAVE to win tomorrow, i dont want a split.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Michael Kay was going on (and on and on) about the new Stadium and said "which the Steinbrenner family is building with their own money".

Weren't they just begging the city for more loot, on top of the $1,000,000,000+ they have already got towards the New Toilet?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Any idea when Kay said this? I'd like to get the quote (without hearing too much more of his voice)?

    ReplyDelete
  92. timlin in! my plan is close to complete.

    mfy get 2
    timlin pitches the 9th
    we get 3
    and yeller gets the W

    ReplyDelete
  93. I would not be dissatisfied with a dong right here.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Any idea when Kay said this? I'd like to get the quote (without hearing too much more of his voice)?

Friday, towards the beginning of the game. If you can get the YES broadcast of Friday's game, you won't have to wait long to hear it.

    MANNY HBP!!!!!

    ReplyDelete

  108. strike 2 was up and away.

    ReplyDelete
  109. see -- away, like that one for ball 2

    ReplyDelete
  110. THEY DESERVE TO LOSE IF YOU HAVE BASES LOADED, NO OUTS AND CANT GET A FUCKING RUN.

  115. jesus christ, it was like watching the mets today.
thats a TOUGH way to lose.

    ReplyDelete
  116. Well, fuck it.
    I wasn't expecting a sweep anyway.
    3 of 4 will do.

Masterson was better than hoped for. Even Yeller looked good.

FY and Drew each had 2 hits.

    ReplyDelete
  117. i don't know, wake always makes me nervous with his wild pitches and everyone under the sun runs on him.
or it at least seems that way...
i hope the cunt doesnt have his stuff tomorrow, or else its gonna be a long night for me at the stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Teams have forced JtC to run up high pitch counts early. I wanna see that tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Sometimes the Sandbox at SoSH cheers me up after a brutal loss, those guys are nuts over there!

    ReplyDelete
  120. jesus christ, it was like watching the mets today.

    cold!

    ReplyDelete
  121. SoSH also thought strike 2 to Lugo was a ball:

    WHAT??!

    FUCK YOU UMP

    WHAT!?!? THAT WAS A STRIKE?!?!?!?!??!

    NOT EVEN FUCKING CLOSE.

fuck you, ump. that pitch has been a ball all inning until now.

    NO FUCKIN WAY!! AWFUL!!

    Bullshit strike!

    Bullshit call there.

    What a bullshit strike call

Fuck you Kerwin. That's 6 inches off the plate.

    That was a fucking ball

And the bullshit Yankee strike call

WHY IS THAT A STRIKE?! HOLY FUCK

Thanks you fucking blind retard ump

  122. A comeback today would have crushed the MFY.

Coming back from the dead against FB, dropping them 10 GB (if the FKR win), and setting up the possibility of a sweep against a quite likely over-pumped JtC.

Girardi might have had to call 2 meetings!

    ReplyDelete
  123. it would have been so sweet, a demoralizing win, but to no avail.
    win tomorrow

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm back! Listened to the game while tooling along the midcoast of Maine, then listened as the rally began then fizzled while blasting down I-95. HOME. Good vacation, though. Great to see the game threads again!
