G137: Red Sox 7, Orioles 4

Orioles - 101 001 100 - 4 9 2
Red Sox - 020 004 01x - 7 8 0
Byrd was Byrdesque (7-7-4-1-4, 84) and the Red Sox (finally) broke through against Olson in the sixth for some breathing room.

Byrd allowed three home runs -- Adam Jones in the 1st, Juan Castro in the 2nd, and Kevin Millar in the 7th -- but they were all solo shots. Beyond those, he allowed only one Baltimore baserunner past second, when he got Luke Scott on a fly out with the bases loaded to end the sixth.

Olson walked the bases loaded in the first, but escaped trouble. Boston got two runs in the 2nd on back-to-back home runs from Jason Varitek and Jeff Bailey. Then the Red Sox, trailing 3-2 in the sixth, batted around against two Orioles pitchers.

After Kevin Youkilis lined to left, Jason Bay hit a ground-rule double to right-center. Jed Lowrie's double to left scored bay to tie the game. Varitek grounded to short, but Bailey walked and Coco Crisp knocked a single to center, scoring Lowrie. Jacoby Ellsbury's infield single behind second loaded the bases. Dustin Pedroia singled down the right field line and two more runs scored. After David Ortiz was walked intentionally, Yook hit into a fielder's choice.

The Red Sox got another run on a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. The run was scored by Pedroia, who had his AL-leading 54th multi-hit game of the season.

After two strikeouts in the ninth, Jonathan Papelbon allowed singles to Millar and Jay Payton -- and a Varitek passed ball moved the runners to second and third. Pinch-hitter Oscar Salazar battled Bot through an eight-pitch at-bat, but grounded to FY to end it.

Also: Cleveland beat the White Sox 5-0, dropping Chicago into a tie with Minnesota in the Central. Both teams are 77-60, 3 GB the Red Sox in the WC. ... And in a game with no playoff implications whatsoever, New York beat Detroit 13-9.

***

Garrett Olson (6.38, 69 ERA+) / Paul Byrd (4.55, 97 ERA+)

***

Out-of-Town: Yankees/Tigers at 1 and White Sox/Spiders at 7. Rays and Twins are off.

Did he really? I was listening to the first part of his inning on WFAN when I was sitting in the car in a Walmart parking lot. The signal wasn't good, but I could hear it. When we got going I turned it back to the Yankees game which had a much better signal. WFAN in New Hampshire during the day... bit statickey.

nixon33 said...

yeah came into the 8th inning with a 1 run lead and gave up a 2 run dong to delgado .

laura k said...

awesomely boring, that is.

A Conformer said...

Do I know a different version of Moby Dick than you, RS? The one in 'II' is not a long song at all.

allan said...

How long is the LP version?

I must be thinking of the 30-35 minute live versions.

laura k said...

It's very long live.

laura k said...

When I saw Zeppelin, a big thing was to come home from the show and brag about how long the drum solos were. zzzzz....

A Conformer said...

4:21.

And 30:35 would only put it at number 5 in length in my playlist... hmmm...

allan said...

LP version is 4:25.
Just seems like 45 minutes.

Joe Grav said...

booo

laura k said...

Hey, the Ramones can play 3 whole LPs in that time. :)

A Conformer said...

The thing about long drum solos is that they're only good if they're amazing. And even then, it has to be live.

laura k said...

The thing about long drum solos is that they're only good if they're amazing. And even then, it has to be live.

I totally agree.

And these days, for me, that will almost never happen in rock. Maybe in jazz. But I feel like I've heard any rock solo anyone can come up with, and they're all boring.

For me. Not boring as an objective fact. They bore me.

laura k said...

I do love Zeppelin, tho. I used to be a huge Jimmy Page fan.

I do love Zeppelin, tho. I used to be a huge Jimmy Page fan.

I had a big shock moment when an 18-year kid in Cincinnati that heard I was listening to "Rock & Roll", and said "Oh, it's the song from that Cadillac ad". I said "no it's not, it's Zeppelin". And he asked "Who?"

Very sad.

nixon33 said...

I MET JIMMY PAGE, WHAT? 5 YEARS AGO? OOPS MAKE THAT 10! ;)

sure does. I'm actually not sure who I'm going with. Had a couple of friends who were top of the list, but neither can.

Emma's been asking me if there's a chance she could see the Red Sox this year. It'd be fun to take here, but... it's the 2nd day of school, she gets bored 'round the 3rd inning, and she can't split the cost with me.

Amy Goodman--is that the one who got Bells Palsy? (the house is indeed awesome. In my opinion.)

Jere said...

thanks, Nick. I'll also be at Fenway Wednesday, as I think you know.

laura k said...

The one who got Bells Palsy? That I don't know. She's very well known from Democracy Now and other writing online.

nick said...

I haven't been able to keep up with all the reports of ridiculous police-state actions around the RNC. caught some of the initial reports, but have fallen far behind. between that, gustav, and the bizarro world of McCain's VP pick, labor day actions, war resisters, and on and on, I'm on extra info overload.

Jere said...

i just checked--it's her. a year ago (?) her face suddenly didn't work on one side. I assumed Bells.

laura k said...

Oh, I'm not keeping up on any of it. I just read some wrap-ups people sent me, and posted a bit of it.

laura k said...

Oxigenius :)

If it's a bad joke, I'm guaranteed to laugh at it.

allan said...

raccoon was coming down the other side of the tree like he was climbing down a ladeer and every few steps, he'd peek around at us.

laura k said...

Probly not a squirrel, so low down. I wonder what it was.

So cool you guys have a house now.

Jere said...

now i'm hearing bats squeaking above me in the drak. this is by far my scariest game thread.

A Conformer said...

You'd be surprised how many wild animals scamper about in amusement parks at night. Skunks, raccoons, rabbits... In the park I worked in in Cincinnati there were sometimes deer walking around one of the wooden coasters at night. Crazy.

a little over a decade ago I was watching a video with some friends on a hot summer night with the doors open for cross ventilation. Looking down, a skunk had wandered into the house and was between us and the TV.

Jere said...

"Jere sounds like the city boy out in the country. All the scary noises in the quiet."

Ha, except I'm really a rural boy who lately lives in cities. I'm cool with sitting outside at night, I mean, I love it, but we have no light back here and add the fact that I'm staring into the bright laptop screen, I'm totally blind when I look up. I have found a good spot where the connection isn't cutting out, though.

There's a line when we introduce her--"wunderkind of the Boston Globe." That one was my mom's, and I just remember thinking, "oh, heh, that's cool." Because I like Amalie. Now, maybe that could be considered too strong a word, I guess, but this dude hates her so much he stopped reading at that point. His girlfriend picked up the book and read it, and did the review on his blog for him. So that was nice of him to put it up anyway.

I don't know (yet) if I'll write a review as if I don't know you, which would include some criticisms - all books have weaknesses - or if I'll write a "this is my friend's book and it's really good and this is why" review with no crit.

I mean, either way I would say I know you, but the first one would be a more in-depth, serious review, the second one would be more like a PR plug.

Either way it would be positive with pull-quotes. :)
