G138: Red Sox 14, Orioles 2

Orioles - 000 100 001 - 2 8 0
Red Sox - 004 610 21x - 14 20 0
A perfect night.

Red Sox win -- and the Rays, Twins and White Sox all lose. Tampa's lead in the East is cut to four games and Boston's lead in the WC is now four games over both Chicago and Minnesota.
Yankees 7, Rays 2
Blue Jays 7, Twins 5
Spiders 9, White Sox 3
***

Radhames Liz (6.95, 63 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.41, 132 ERA+)

Liz faced the Red Sox on July 12 and they totally abused him: 2.1-6-8-3-2, 61. In his 21-game major league career, he has allowed 89 hits and 61 walks in only 81.2 innings -- a whopping 1.789 WHIP. More destruction should occur tonight.

Lester faced Baltimore about two weeks ago, on August 18: 7-4-1-1-5, 103.

Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett both seem on pace to return Friday night in Texas. Lowell thinks playing on Friday is "a legit possibility". J.D. Drew could come off the DL today, but he's not ready.

Dustin Pedroia scored 33 runs in August. Last night, he set a new Red Sox team record for hits by a 2B (he has 184, breaking Del Pratt's 1922 mark of 183).

FY has also stolen 17 bases in 18 attempts; his 94.4% rate is the best in the AL among players with at least 15 attempts. If he can maintain that rate, it would be the best for any Red Sox player with at least 10 attempts since 1956.

Also at 7 PM: Yankees/Rays, Twins/Blue Jays, and White Sox/Spiders.

Is there any debate on whether this is the best season ever by a Red Sox 2nd baseman?

Benjamin said...

I'm sure Remy has an opinion on that.

allan said...

Neyer, in his Big Book of baseball Lineups, lists Bobby Doerr's 1948 season as the best season by a Boston 2B. He also says Doerr is the top 2B in team history.

Neyer calls Doerr "the only great second baseman to spend much time with the Sox; Pete Runnels was the only other to even finish in the top 10 of an MVP vote".

So there is not much competition.

In 1948, Doerr hit .285/.386/.505 for a 131 OPS+. 27 dongs and 111 RBI; 266 TB in 140 games.

6th in on-base, 7th in slugging, 10th in total bases, 10th in extra-base hits, 5th in home runs, 7th in RBI, 9th in OPS+, 9th in Runs Created. 19th in MVP voting

Right now, Pedroia is:
1st in average
1st in runs
1st in hits
5th in total bases
3rd in doubles
2nd in singles
6th in Runs Created
4th in times on base
6th in most outs made (boo)

He is not close to cracking the leaderboard in either OBP or SLG.

Sox OPS+

Youkilis - 142
Drew - 140
Manny - 138
Ortiz - 123
Bay - 123
Pedroia - 122
Casey - 117

allan said...

NESN sez:

Jacoby Ellsbury, LF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
David Ortiz, DH
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
Mark Kotsay, RF
Jed Lowrie, 3B
Jason Varitek, C
Alex Cora, SS
Coco Crisp, CF

Brian Roberts, 2B
Adam Jones, CF
Nick Markakis, RF
Aubrey Huff, DH
Ramon Hernandez, C
Kevin Millar, 1B
Oscar Salazar, 3B
Lou Montanez, LF
Juan Castro, SS

Benjamin said...

Other than misspelling Montanez as "Martanez", the Globe agrees.

Zenslinger said...

Just a night off for Bay, I hope.

Rob said...

Wouldn't this be the first night off for Bay since he arrived in Boston?

And against a guy who the Red Sox should destroy, good a time as any.

allan said...

Other than misspelling Montanez as "Martanez", the Globe agrees.

Yeah. The NESN lineup I got from SoSH spelled it that way too, but I checked the O's MLB roster and changed it. BR backs me up: Montanez.

...

So, we'd like the MFY to sweep duh Rays, no?

Benjamin said...

So, we'd like the MFY to sweep duh Rays, no?

My brain says yes, but my heart says no.

Benjamin said...

Wouldn't this be the first night off for Bay since he arrived in Boston?

He didn't play on August 15, when the game against Toronto got rained out. Slacker.

Benjamin said...

Francona says Beckett should be back Friday against Texas.

Benjamin said...

Globe silently fixes its typo.

JCal76 said...

MVP? Fuck Yeah!!!

Zenslinger said...

My brain says yes, but my heart says no.

We've had a lot of this divided allegiance stuff the past month or so. Although I feel the same way about the heart/brain thing, I find my heart a little more at ease with Yankee wins knowing they're out of it.

So...go Yanks!

(Right...?)

allan said...

I want the East -- and the only way that will happen is if the FKR lose, so ...

If the Yankees winning actually HELPS us, then it's a good thing. Winning a game or three might give some of their idiot fans false hope, but who the eff cares? They are dead and buried -- anyone with a brain can see that. We need Tampa to lose by any means necessary.

I understand the "Sox take the Card and the MFY finish as far back as possible" argument. It has its appeal, but it's not for me. Not yet.

allan said...

FY could give Doerr a run for his $, if he keeps playing out of his head like he has been. We'll have to check back on 9/29.

Benjamin said...

(Right...?)

It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for Wales?!

Rob said...

Remy: "We are so excited to bring you this game on NESN."

Cause he knows we're going to KILL the Orioles!

Rob said...

Trying not to get too crazy about this, but... Go Yankees! For the next three games. Then go back to sucking.

Rob said...

Youk's out of the lineup with back spasms... Lowrie playing at third, Bailey at first.

allan said...

TIME TO ROCK AND ROLL!

let's go, sid!

Zenslinger said...

It profits a man nothing to give his soul for the whole world... but for Wales?!

Hm...Man for All Seasons as my good friend Google tells me.

So, I guess you're saying "Go Rays"?

allan said...

got buffyvision on the "last" channel button. all updates welcome!

Benjamin said...

Since my rooting cannot cause the arms to fall off FKR and MFY pitchers, I'm content not to root for either. Whatever happens happens.

Rob said...

Not sure what order the lineup is in now, but I'm thinking FY will land back in the cleanup spot.

Just as Castig says it. FY cleanup.

So, it'll be Ellsbury, Lowrie (3B), Ortiz, Pedroia, Kotsay, Varitek, Bailey, Cora, Crisp

Zenslinger said...

Youk's out of the lineup with back spasms

Fuck and double fuck!

(One for reality, the other for the fantasy league.)

allan said...

Remy: "We are so excited to bring you this game on NESN."

"Because they promised me I could do TWO plugs for my shitty website. TWO!!! Woo-Hoo!!!"

Rob said...

You know the Yankees really suck when Red Sox fans root for them in a regular season game.

allan said...

WTF????????????

i just put in the old lineup from gameday, now it's changed....

Benjamin said...

Good thing we're playing Baltimore, because that's a shitty lineup.

Rob said...

Right, because Youk is scratched.

Rob said...

97 mph heat from Lester!

Benjamin said...

I never used to look forward to Lester outings. What a difference a year makes.

Rob said...

I've never felt more confident about a game this season than I feel about this one. So, obviously I'm expecting a win.

Benjamin said...

Liz has never given up fewer than two runs.

Rob said...

Seriously - Has Lester been any stronger than he is in his life??

Zenslinger said...

Lester pitch count = 15-11.

Sure seems nasty on GD. I didn't know he could hit 97.

Joe Grav said...

Ahhh fuck. I hope yook's ok

allan said...

fwiw, gdgd had him on the roberts k at 98.

Rob said...

1-2-3 Top 1st for the Yankees.

allan said...

3-0 & shift?

fuck that.

Rob said...

FY .327
Milton Bradley .324
Joe Mauer .320

Joe Grav said...

What's the complete new oatmeal, sans youk?

Rob said...

Ellsbury LF
Lowrie 3B
Ortiz DH
Pedroia 2B
Kotsay RF
Varitek C
Bailey 1B
Cora SS
Crisp CF

Benjamin said...

1. Jacoby Ellsbury LF
2. Jed Lowrie 3B
3. David Ortiz DH
4. Dustin Pedroia 2B
5. Mark Kotsay RF
6. Jason Varitek C
7. Jeff Bailey 1B
8. Alex Cora SS
9. Coco Crisp CF

Rob said...

I win.

Joe Grav said...

fuckfuckfuckfuck we need yooks

Rob said...

So Joba Chamberlain has been activated, and is in the bullpen... Probably stay in the bullpen next year.

allan said...

not sure why i said buffyvision since the jays are playing the twins.
i got yes on the fkr game.

Rob said...

That was HUGE.

Joe Grav said...

Joe Grav said...

AND YOU GOT YOUR UMPIRING DEGREE WHEN?

Zenslinger said...

Whoa! Description, please!

Did a weak-but-accurate throw just beat a slow runner or what?

allan said...

we know how to watch the game, we don't need a traditional pbp guy. put mirror in there with remy and enjoy the show.

allan said...

i need a replay on that

Joe Grav said...

Joe Grav said...

Rob said...

Looks like his hand touched the plate. Haha.

Hernandez clearly got a hand on the plate before Tek tagged him. Oh well; we'll take it.

Liz: 19-11

You mean knocking? Like knocking boots.

Rob said...
