G141: Rangers 15, Red Sox 8

Red Sox - 013 000 004 - 8 13 0
Rangers - 072 013 02x - 15 16 0
My internet connection went out at work in the bottom of the first (IT/server upgrades) and by the time I was back up, the game was over.

Clearly, I didn't miss much, as Wakefield imploded in the second (1.2-4-7-4-0, 49) and the Sox's bid for an 11-run rally in the top of the ninth fell seven runs short. It turned out that Wakefield's 500th appearance was also his shortest start in a Red Sox uniform.

Kevin Youkilis -- back in the clean-up spot -- belted a three-run dong in the third.

Good news earlier in the day though: the Blue Jays beat the Rays 7-4 in 13 innings and the Tigers beat the Twins 6-4. Also, the White Sox beat the Angels 7-6 in 15 innings. The Yankees beat the Mariners 7-4.

So we stay 2.5 GB in the East and 5.5 GA for the Wild Card.

***

Tim Wakefield (3.76, 120 ERA+) / Matt Harrison (5.73, 75 ERA+)

Scoreboard:
FKR: 000 000 003 000 1 - 4 10 1
TOR: 110 100 000 000 4 - 7 13 1
Gregg Zaun: Grand Slam!
2 GB!

***

Tonight's start is Wakefield's 500th appearance for the Red Sox.
Bob Stanley is the only other pitcher in club history to appear in at least 500 games with 637 to his credit. Wakefield will become the first pitcher in club history to start at least 350 of his 500 outings with the Red Sox, and the 23rd pitcher to reach those milestones with one team in Major League history.
Wakefield has 162 wins with Boston, only 30 fewer than both Cy Young and Roger Clemens. I'm hoping he can stick around for another three seasons and get at least 193. Wakefield already holds the club record for losses with 143; Young is 2nd with 112, followed by Stanley with 111. (He is also 20 starts away from tying Clemens for the club record in that category.)

Kevin Youkilis, who was not with the team last night because of a personal matter, should be back in the lineup tonight and J.D. Drew might return during next week's Tampa Bay series.

***

Out-of-town Quadrupleheader!:
Rays/Blue Jays at 1
Tigers/Twins at 3:45
Angels/White Sox at 7
Yankees/Mariners at 10
East
Rays 85 54 --- Magic #
Red Sox 83 57 2.5 21
Yankees 75 66 11.0 12
Blue Jays 74 66 11.5 12
Orioles 63 77 22.5 1

Wild Card
Red Sox 83 57 --- Magic #
White Sox 79 61 4.0 19
Twins* 78 63 5.5 17
Yankees 75 66 8.5 14
Blue Jays 74 66 9.0 14

What's the amusement park in Myrtle Beach, Ofer?

So looks like Timlin is just out there for the hell of it tonight.

Was Wakefield that ineffective tonight?

Holy Cow - this is just a good old fahioned butt-whupping here.
Been busy with the grandkids all night, and when I pulled up the game, I decided to go back to playing Candyland :(
Haley says the Sox need to wake up!

I wonder what Ike will bring...

Hmmph, I get 201.

Hard Rock Park. New one, opened this year. Wasn't very succesful.

well if we're getting REALLY TECHINCAL and its players on the team you'd never have a finite answer as there are injuries and they dont always replace outfielers with another outfielder, sometimes they bring up another pitcher instead.
there could be a pretty different number for every situation, no?

;P

So far it's just wind and rain, but it's a lot of wind and a lot of rain.

Funny. I'm in Myrtle Beach, and they really hyped up Hanna here, and in the end we barely got anything. Some wind and rain, nothing out of the ordinary.

I'd love to move around as much as you do. But yeah, right now we're locked into this sea of green and yellow on the radar. We don't get storms like this very often. Usually one in the spring, what they call "nor'easters" around here, where a low pressure system moves east across the country, redevelops off the coast and comes up the coast. Usually in the form of snow storms in the winter, but in the spring we've gotten some flooding rains here.

See those seven runs in the second?

And the ocean can be crazy choppy and dangerous because of the tropical-storm force wind. Sometimes you'll get hurricane force.

ish said...

Heat and humidity in Texas... I'd say that contributed to Wakefield's bad night. He's had a bad history in Texas... if balls travel further on hot, humid nights, a knuckleball will not do a whole lot and will stay up rather than dive and dart around.

It is a minimum of 25 runs. All 9 batters must score at least once. NL/AL are the same. Just all 9 hitters. Think about if they all scored home runs to make it easy.

andy said...

Yes nix if someone is pinch hit for then it would ruin everything.

ish said...

I wonder what Ike will bring...

Latest models show Ike moving toward... drum roll... New Orleans.

But it's so far away that it could come up the east coast, it could dart south then go into the Gulf of Mexico, it could head directly to Miami...

The moving around part is cool. Of course, it would be better if I didn't have to work.

And my ride in the park in Wildwood was called the Nor'easter.

The old park at Myrtle Beach was the Grand Strand Pavillion. They tore it down to put up some new hotels and I THINK that Hard Rock Park is also there. Right on the "strip" about the center of MB proper.
The old park was antiquanted and somewhat run-down, but everyone believed it could never be replaced with something new.
Sounds like maybe they were right.

THIS GAME BLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWS

Amy said...

When do you get to Six Flags in Agawam, Ofer? We could get those of us in the western New England area there to meet you...I think that's S1C, 9Casey, and Nick and me.

A Conformer said...

Hey, we're only 2 grand slams+1 away.

Amy said...

Nixon, I am doing my best to ignore this game. Don't remind me. I was so psyched for closing the gap another step with the Rays.

Probably never, since they didn't do an installation there in the end. But I think I might come to Boston for the first week of October or so.

Amy said...

Which park in Boston? October...I bet we will still be playing baseball then!

A Conformer said...

No park. A good friend of mine goes to Harvard, so I'm taking a week off and coming to visit.

A Conformer said...

OK, Ross, I was asking for you repeatedly earlier. Do something good.

Amy said...

Well, I hope you get to Fenway while you are there. Even if just for the tour.

A Conformer said...

I'm hoping for a playoff game, of course. Hope it won't be too expensive.

Amy said...

Have you ever been there? To Boston or to Fenway?

A Conformer said...

To Boston, in a New England trip back when I was 11. I don't remember anything besides a squirrel in a park near Harvard (funny thing, memory). Fenway? No.

A Conformer said...

Pauley with a meaningless Houdini act.

Amy said...

Wow, a first trip to Boston and to Fenway! That's exciting. If you need any tips or anything about Boston, let me know. Though obviously you have a friend there (and lots of other JOSers) to give you advice!

Thanks a lot. Obviously, I'll let you know in one of the ALDS threads or something.

LOL!

I have lots of family there...daughter, brother in law, cousins, etc.

Well, here's to hoping the M's win and the Yankees fall to third place.

are you sure?
if its "all 9 hitters must score at least one run" and all 9 hitters hit consecutive HRs, then the answer is 9 runs...

how do you get 25?

A Conformer said...

Man, White Sox and Angels in the 14th inning already. 6-6.

phil said...

He's talking about everyone on the 25-man roster, apparently, including pitchers.

Nah, the question wasn't what's the minimum amount of batters where it's possible. That would be really easy. It's what's the number of runs a team HAS to score to ensure every one of their 9 hitters scores at least one run.
If 8 guys hit dongs, then 9 guy makes an out, then the 8 guys his dongs again, then the 9 guy makes an out, then the 8 guys hit dongs, poor 9 guy would have to score in order to score the 25th run before they make the 3rd out.

Sorry if this makes anybody's head hurt (-;

This games sucks all the joy out of baseball.

My house is so humid that I feel like I am in the rain forest or a steam room.

A Conformer said...

Nelson Cruz= the new Catalanotto.

Amy said...

My head definitely hurts from that. I didn't even try to answer the question. I didn't even understand the question.

I did have two drinks with dinner, if that explains my dead head.

ish said...

Yankees are running themselves into the ground... They had a guy in a rundown and they interfered with him.

ish said...

I could turn my a/c on but I love the sound of the rain.

ish said...

Rain is picking up, which is not something I thought was possible. Apparently it is.

Amy said...

We don't have our AC on either. I try to avoid AC if I can.

nixon33 said...

is that angels game a FOX game? Its not on my EI package...

A Conformer said...

A Kotsay slam, and we're only two more slams from the lead...

Amy said...

NOW we score runs?

SoSock said...

Hope you get to see a game, Ofer!
We used to do the NE Flower Show with our soap business. 3 straight years in Boston, leaving exactly 1 week before opening day every time - sucks!
We did take the tour 1 year, and another year Taylor and I walked in through some open doors like we owned the place while the construction crews were busy. It helped that I had my tool pouch with me and we stuck a pair of pliers and a screwdriver in our pockets :)
Still haven't seen a game there, though.

ish said...

Be interesting to see where this goes.

NOW we score runs?

NOW we score runs?

Amy said...

Weird double post.

A Conformer said...

Amy, did the Sox score twice more?

Amy said...

SoSock, I hope you can get to the JOS game next year.

My post went THREE times. Very odd.

phil said...

Hey look, more runs.

Just a few more. And then another few. And keep going.

Amy said...

LOL, Ofer. Not sure what happened. It must be the rain. And Laura and Allan must be too busy to screen the duplicates. And I am too lazy to delete.

nixon33 said...

of course we score fuckig runs now.

btw, a conformer, thanks for clearing that up, i was reading the question wrong, i wasnt putting emphasis on the HAVE part of the question.

too bad timlin didnt hold the line, the fuck...

A Conformer said...

To paraphrase the drunk guy from L and RS' Toilet story: "All we need is 8 runs! Just 8! That's all we need!"

A Conformer said...

ChiSox win. Woop-de-fucking-doo.

phil said...

White Sox won 7-6 in the 15th.

nixon33 said...

was the angels game on fox?

A Conformer said...

Let's get their closer into into this one. Wait, who is Texas' closer, anyway?

ish said...

Dang. Oh well.
Clean water.

phil said...

At least we kept it respectable at the end, sort of.

A Conformer said...

That's gotta be the most useless 4-run 9th inning ever. VERY clean water. Sterile.

SoSock said...

Agua limpia.

Hard to believe we maged to get 13 hits. Of course SIX of them came in that useless last inning.

Amy said...

Eh. Time to go to sleep and hope that tomorrow brings less humidity and better pitching.

SoSock said...

Well, our Warthogs lost to Myrtle Beach today, giving the Pelicans the series and a birth in the Carolina League Championship Series.
Ofer, if you're still in Myrtle Beach Monday game 1 is there , I think.

redsock said...

I'm back online at work!!!!

Everything went dead at 8:20 or aso -- with Wakefield pitching to his second batter in the first.

Got a 9-4 update from L.

Looks like I did not miss much.

MFY win 7-4.
