G146: Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 0

Blue Jays - 000 000 000 - 0 3 2
Red Sox - 010 100 23x - 7 8 0
Wakefield mixed in a lot of fastballs and curves and had a superb night in the Boston rain: 8-3-0-0-4, 94. (Toronto's only baserunners of the night in bold.)
1: K L9 P3
2: F8 K 2B F8
3: 2B F7 63 43
4: 53 F7 1B F7
5: 53 53 P3
6: F7 K K
7: F9 43 43
8: 53 53 63
9*: 43 F7 63
MDC pitched the 9th. ... It was the Red Sox's 15th shutout of the season -- tops in MLB.

Jed Lowrie had a great night: a sac fly in the second, an RBI double in the 4th, a double and a run scored in the seventh, and a 9-pitch walk and a run scored in the eighth.

David Ortiz doubled the Sox's lead from 2-0 to 4-0 with a two-run double in the seventh and Kevin Cash put the game on ice with a three-run dong in the eighth.

All other games involving East and wild card contenders were rained out. Boston is 2 GB in the East and 6 GA in the wild card.

***

David Purcey (5.23, 81 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.11, 110 ERA+)

It will be four games in three days for the Red Sox against a team which has won 11 of its last 12 games.

LHP Purcey is a rookie who will be making his 11th start of the season. Check out his game log. Lately, he has been either superb (eight shutout innings over the FKR in his start) or terrible.

Alex Rios has hit in 12 straight games and has a .435/.458/.870 line in September. Lyle Overbay is also hot this month (.382/.400/.735). ... The Red Sox's September stats are here.

J.D. Drew's back stiffened up before Wednesday's game against the Rays and he is a question mark for tonight.

Terry Francona must stop penciling Jacoby Ellsbury in at leadoff spot. His OBP at the top of the lineup this season is a .311. His 1st inning OBP is a paltry .280.

All of Ellsbury's 21 starts since August 14 have been at the #1 spot: .221/.275/.305 -- no hits, no walks, no power. And he's batting only .172 this month (5-for-29).

FUNIX= RESPECT....Good for Coco he pretty much has kept his mouth shut about playing time, and as of late has hit pretty well. Makes him a stand up guy in my book..

9casey said...

I hope they play this game....

nixon33 said...

i wish FUNIX started wednesdays game.

nixon33 said...

OH YEAH! LETS GO YANK-EES.

Drew might return tomorrow afternoon.

I hope they play this game....

Weather?

I have to do an interview at 7, so a one-hour rain delay would be nice.

laura k said...

Has that collider experiment destroyed the world yet?

seano said...

Don't let it annoy you too much. The Red Sox have a much larger run differential because they're a better hitting team. So they score more runs in blowouts and their expected W-L record gets inflated a bit; whereas the Rays and Angels have better pitching staffs and win more close games.

Jere said...

Will be four games within 48 hours this weekend.

nixon33 said...

the weather lady on nesn just said it should only be a short delay.
whether she really knows the weather, is a different story.

allan said...

"The best of both worlds is finally here. In a long-awaited win-win for fans everywhere, Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Wednesday that MLB.TV Premium subscribers now have the choice of the home or away broadcast feed in every live game."

Zenslinger said...

Extra Bases says they're aiming for a 7:45 start.

L gets her wish.

allan said...

If they offer both TV feeds, could I watch a Sox-Jays game on NESN even though Buffyvision would be blacked out for me?

I have the cheap 400k mlbtv so I can't get it, but I see the NESN and Rogers logos to click on.

Zenslinger said...

Five games currently delayed and two more postponed.

9casey said...

its still rainin here..in ct

lurkkher said...

"Blackout and other restrictions apply"

Based on what I'm seeing, if the game is blacked out for you, it's blacked out on both feeds.

(Which makes a certain kind of sense, at least if you are able to apply "sense" to the blackout rules, sigh. In this view, it would make a lot more sense to give you only the home feed, complete with the home feed's commercials.)

laura k said...

L gets her wish.

Is this still true? I'm off the phone and ready for baseball.

laura k said...

In a long-awaited win-win for fans everywhere, Major League Baseball Advanced Media announced on Wednesday that MLB.TV Premium subscribers now have the choice of the home or away broadcast feed in every live game.

Does this mean no more whining when we get the wrong feed? We can just switch?

allan said...

If they can somehow get both TV feeds into the EI package for each game, I'll be a very happy man.

allan said...

L: It's only for the website right now. Not TV.

Jere said...

The cat is mesmerized by this montage of defensive gems.

Jere said...

That is key, the "both feeds" thing.

laura k said...

L: It's only for the website right now. Not TV.

Oh. Boo.

Jere said...

Cool, I can watch this Curb episode--hope the game doesn't start till 8.

Benjamin said...

Looks like it'll get underway soon.

Jere said...

"Looks like it'll get underway soon."

Wow, they're just gonna play in the rain--here we go. Strike one.

Jere said...

knucklers in the rain.

Benjamin said...

Good start, but I'm concerned about the knuckleball in the drizzle.

allan said...

I will have to stay clear of GDGD.

It's 2 pitches ahead of the radio!

laura k said...

Time for Buffyvision and laundry folding. Looks like it's pouring in Boston.

Jere said...

OTT-awa. (Canadian OTT)

laura k said...

Funix!!

laura k said...

OTTawa, cute. :)

allan said...

Rolen having trouble existing.

Zenslinger said...

We kinda need this game. Not NEED, but should win it...given the pitching matchups we're facing. Toronto thinks they're contending and are pulling out the stops here.

Given tomorrow's double header, it's no wonder they're trying to play this game?

How's the rain? And why worry particularly about the knuckler in it?

laura k said...

True re Toronto. Much talk of them making a run for the wild card. Kinda hard to believe, but I guess they want to create excitement.

Jere said...

Yanks Rays still delayed

Jere said...

delayed ain't just a group of non-virgins

Jere said...

Wow, camera sees Coco putting glove up, then pans up at wall for some reason, getting back on Coco just barely in time to see him make catch at far bottom of screen.

Zenslinger said...

...

Ah, "de laid".

laura k said...

Seems kinda crazy to play in this weather. I know it's a scheduling thing, but still.

laura k said...

Yeah, de-laid took me a moment too.

Jere said...

menched

Jere said...

so you had a group of non-virgins reaction?

Jere said...

coco -- I knew DOn would say "battling the raindrops"!

Jere said...

4pitchBB, nice. Sledge is losin' it.

Jere said...

what a fool! "Catch the ball!" --Mariano Rivera. Eh, NESN thinks it may have hit too high on the wall, too bad they only had one shot of it. With all those cameras and all...

Jere said...

Bay almost got screwed by ball hitting ump, but gets to 2nd w/out throw

laura k said...

group of nonvirgin reactions... can't go with that one.

maybe a fucked reaction would be better. get rid of the virgin thing.

Jere said...

the longer you keep your boys out there, Sledge, the worse the field gets...

Jere said...

but then it would have to be da'fucked reaction. Or group of fucked people reaction. I vote for the end of this conversation:)

laura k said...

I'll second that.

Jere said...

unproductive!

Jere said...

productive!

1-0

laura k said...

Jere, just tell me this. Are you threading more than one game here?

Jere said...

I am threading one game. What's goin' on?

Benjamin said...

Coco's move with the bat between his legs was, um, interesting.

Benjamin said...

I'm making dinner.

allan said...

i get it.

kotsay - unpro
lowrie - pro

sorry, wasn't trying to be cryptic

allan said...

Exciting!

Jere said...

they're all fucked

Benjamin said...

Cash tried to sell that walk but isn't a very good salesman. He should think twice before joining Mirabelli on the Home Shopping circuit.

Jere said...

that may have been catchable....

laura k said...

It wasn't just the productive/unproductive. I haven't understand half of Jere's comments tonight. (Please don't count, it might not be half.)

Who is Sledge? Why the Mariano Rivera quote? What was the cat mesmerized by?

Maybe it's the NESN vs Buffy feed. We are watching the same game, but different games.

Jere said...

no, a little too high, despite what Remy said. I think.

Jere said...

still, Coco, give it a shot, and Bay will play the carom if nec. you know this.

Jere said...

Purcey Sledge.

The Jays outfielder let the ball land right next to him, hence catch the ball.

The cat was watching the rain delay show on NESN, it was highlights from the season so far.

laura k said...

thank you :)

i was about to type "don't worry about answering all that"

Jere said...

way to get out of that Wake!

laura k said...

nice to see the jays squander

Jere said...

It's Krazy Eyes Killah's third commercial (that I've noticed) since his role on Curb. (The actor who played Krazy. Who was a character on the show. Funny to see him play these straight roles after being a gangsta rapper.)

Joe Grav said...

this late start suited me fine, i haven't missed much. Holla!

Joe Grav said...

Self-congratulation on NESN? no way!

Jere said...

ha, Don's 1000th game, they're showing him getting a cake, blowing out candles from earlier.

Got a reply re long rundowns:

Phillies-Astros
May 8, 2001
Top 6th, Enron Field, Houston.

PHILLIES 6TH: Rollins singled to right; Abreu struck out while Rollins was caught stealing second (catcher to shortstop to first to second to pitcher to second to first to second to catcher to shortstop); Rolen flied to center.

2-6-3-4-1-4-3-4-2-6

allan said...

FKR/MFY - ppd

laura k said...

That is a seriously long run-down.

Jere said...

Nice. Rollins also made an out to left, giving him 123467 for that game.

allan said...

I got some other info on another rundown that was supposedly twice or three times as long. Gotta check it out.

Jere said...

also, holy shit that's a long pickle

Jere said...

three times as long would be THIRTY guys!

Jere said...

I also like this line from that box:

FIELDING -
DP: 2. Hayes-Bagwell, Ausmus-Vizcaino-Bagwell-Biggio-Lima-Biggio-Bagwell-Biggio-Ausmus-Vizcaino.

laura k said...

Full ad in between batters. FULL AD, the whole screen, in the middle of an inning.

It occurs to me I haven't complained to anyone but you guys and wmtc readers about this. I gotta email Rogers Sports.

Joe Grav said...

How long can they keep going in this rain? It's getting messier and messier.

laura k said...

I guess they're trying to get the official game in. It does seem crazy.

Jere said...

DH tomorrow, gotta play through.

Rays also will play 2 tomorrow.

laura k said...

Nevertheless.

allan said...

Red Barber once wrote about a triple play he saw in spring training that went:

5-2-6-2-5-1-7-4-7-8-5-4-6-4-3-4-9-6-3

I'm trying to figure out (a) if it's true and (b) when it happened.

Jere said...

it'll be like the old days. a slate full o' doubleheaders on a weekend day.

allan said...

Without TV/replay, how in the hell would you remember the sequence?

Jere said...

let's say we're two back after tonight. At the end of tomorrow, we'd be anywhere from tied to 4 back of Tampa.

allan said...

FKR: ppd
NYY:

MIN: ppd
BAL:

DET: ppd
CWS:

Jere said...

you'd have to be taking notes during the play! Or ask a bunch of the fielders themselves afterwards and piece it together. Counting throws while it happens would help too.

allan said...

10 "players" vs 19 "players" - only twice as long!

laura k said...

Without TV/replay, how in the hell would you remember the sequence?

Could you scribble the numbers down as you saw them? Pencil in one hand, eyes on the field, just writing 2, 3, 1, 3, etc.?

Because you couldn't possibly remember them without seeing and studying the numbers.

Jere said...

whoa, crazy ass hops. I think the SS did have a chance, since Bay slipped out of the box

Jere said...

the catcher with all his gear on makes him visible--like, you'd have to remember when he was catching/throwing. At least moreso than the others.

SoSock said...

hey, hey, hey
It's my 1st NESN game!
Bonus ESPN coverage due to the rain in NY.
Lucky me!

allan said...

June 8, 1914 PIT @ PHI
In the home 4th, Fred Luderus hit a line drive to the [high] brick wall in deep centerfield where it stuck. Luderus circled the bases while CF Kelly "danced frantically underneath but the ball would not fall". Apparently a piece of brick was missing - forming a hole where the ball stuck in the "jagged edges of two broken bricks" for the first true inside-the-park homer.

laura k said...

Sosock gets NESN - cool!

Joe Grav said...

Julio Lugo says I am the shortstop! oh wait

Jere said...

Again with the Lowrie. 2-0 us. Three outs till it's official, too.

SoSock said...

Jed-Ieeeeee!

Jere said...

I love that the national audience got the bullpen band right away.

allan said...

bullpen band audible on radio.

laura k said...

Bullpen band nonexistent on Buffyvision.

laura k said...

We're supposed to have torrential rains all over the GTA tomorrow. Very bad for all the rallies and demos. Boo.

SoSock said...

Went out to eat with the folks (Clemmons Kitchen, mmmmm).
They came by to visit after and I have been sitting here fighting the urge to go to the puter and check the score. Dad brought up the subject of the Braves, his team, and I quickly said,"well let's see if we can find a game and get some scores".
We watched some of Pit-StL on ESPN, and just as Mom and Dad were saying bye they showed the official announcement of the postponement at the Toilet and then switched to Boston.
Meant to be!
Hot Damn!

laura k said...

Buffy planting the tired excuse. "There's no question who's the more rested team..." with the run down of who played when and where.

Jere said...

NESN goes green after ball is hit--recovers to see Lowell making play. that was weird.

SoSock said...

MY FIRST HEIDI SIGHTING !!!!

Rob said...

Evening, chaps. Nice looking score. Maybe in an inning or so the heavens could open and the game could be called. All the other games just about have been PPD.

allan said...

sox are more tired - they went to japan.

SoSock said...

OK, I hear you guys talk about them all the time. Who's who here?
Commentator-wise I mean.

Rob said...

So a friend of mine, out of the blue, gave me two tickets to the first game against the Arachnids at Fenway. :D

Jere said...

When that camera went green--I think they lost its feed. Because now after the ball's hit, we're seeing this really low angle from behind the plate.

Jere said...

TOO---This One's Official!

laura k said...

Jerry is the former player with the mustache and the Boston accent.

Don is the pasty-faced guy with the nice radio voice who drones on and on with meaningless factoids.

laura k said...

Ish, nice! Gifts from the baseball gods.

(You know, those nonexistent bbgs.)

Jere said...

Nice, Ish, I'll be at the second one. --oh, wait, you mean Arachnid like Spider, as opposed to what I've always called the Arachnids, the Yanks, with their Arachnid-looking NY.

Okay, so I'll be at the first Cleveland Arachnid game and the second NY Arachnid game.

Rob said...

.Nice, Ish, I'll be at the second one. --oh, wait, you mean Arachnid like Spider, as opposed to what I've always called the Arachnids, the Yanks, with their Arachnid-looking NY.

I'll be there on the 22nd, against the Indians/Spiders/Arachnids/Still-Not-Tribe-Time

laura k said...

I'm gonna watch the rest w/o the keyboard. Not sure what I'll do tomorrow, with the DH at work! Hope for a very slow day, I guess.

G'night all!

SoSock said...

Man that is some SHITTY playing conditions out there!

Jere said...

So we'll both be there the 22nd. I think--I keep forgetting if I have 22nd or 24th. But I think 22nd.

Rob said...

Fantastic. Where are your seats?

Jere said...

I can't tell you how much I love this 80s Red Sox ad they're showing on NESN. It's very Morgan Magic-centric. No, I can tell you how much: A shitload.

Jere said...

That's one of my 10-game plan games (either 22nd or 24th), so bleachers. Right field.

Jere said...

very nice pitch by Wake to K his ass

Jere said...

where are you sitting ish?

Jere said...

atta boy Wake. I mean, atta man.

Rob said...

Loge box. section 22

SoSock said...

OK, my 1st taste of NESN. I guess I'm not getting the ads I hear you talk about because they go to ESPN's ads.
Wake's ball is moving pretty well to be so wet there. It's typically better in a dry atmosphere, which we do NOT have here.

Jere said...

sosock, have you thought about getting EI on your cable? Or mlb.tv? Or just not feasible?

Pepe Lepew said...

Wow, Wake is dealing tonight. I don't know why some Sox fans don't like him. I think he's great.
JEEEEEDDDDDD!!! is an RBI machine!

Jere said...

Sec 22 in the loge--depending on your row, you may be in the *secret* foul ball spot. I don't know if you know this, but since last year, the home plate screen, which you'll be underneath, has holes in it where it meets the facade. A lot of balls that roll up it drop straight down. If you're right under a hole, and in row--FF, I believe? around there--your chances of getting a foul ball increase dramatically.

Jere said...

"Wake is dealing tonight. I don't know why some Sox fans don't like him. I think he's great."

Seems like one of the more beloved Sox to me.

Jere said...

I mean, I definitely don't hear too many complaints about Wake in this great season he's having.

allan said...

I miss this commercial.

Jere said...

wow, NESN having serioues cam trouble now. Ball hit, cut to camera showing nothing, cut to another camera showing a close-up of the warning track, cut to Kotsay with ball in glove. They've clearly lost that main cam that they usually cut to after the ball is hit.

Jere said...

I haven't clicked the link--but I'm guessing "Ess-actly"?

allan said...

Nope. Baby New York.

allan said...

Well, there's a lot, a lot of culture.

Jere said...

Ah, I was wrong--but I see it's the one where the guy says Philly is a little New York. Ha.

allan said...

No idea how or where to get a copy of the Manny ad. I'd really like it, though.

Pepe Lepew said...

Blogger Jere said...

I mean, I definitely don't hear too many complaints about Wake in this great season he's having.

Oh, you're preaching to the choir. I've just heard so many Sox fans say, "Oh, he sucks," etc., and I keep thinking "are you talking about the same Wakefield I know of???" Also, isn't he a Clemente finalist or something?

SoSock said...

Pedroia has a laser gun, Lowrie has the light saber!

Joe Grav said...

I love Lowrie.

Jere said...

There was someone here earlier this year who was complaining big time about Wake. I forget who that was.

Youk is the Sox' Clemente representative. (I just happened to be there that day and saw him get the nod.)

Jere said...

and Cash has the Wad. Come on, Cash, do some damage, guy.

Oh, wait, no RBI this time. What a schmuck.

Jere said...

sosock--I thought you were getting the NESN feed. NESN is not breaking away for ads in mid inning, which I think the Jays' feed is, if I'm understanding correctly.

(NESN has "spots" done by the announcers, but not separate ads mid-at bat or even mid half inning.)

Rob said...

I'll be in row NN. :\

Jere said...

Going back to that Buffy comment--I love how the Jays were totally fine and rested for their, what, 10-game winning streak?--until they reach Fenway.

allan said...

116 pitches -- cito leaves the young arm in.

SoSock said...

OK, they did not break away, just showed a graphic at the bottom, and one of them (Remy, I'm guessing) does the talking, finishing up pretty much as the pitcher starts his motion.

allan said...

if the guy reading the promo can't get through it without butchering at least 5 words, that's remy.

Pepe Lepew said...

Youk is the Sox' Clemente representative. (I just happened to be there that day and saw him get the nod.)

Oh, you're right. I wonder if I'm thinking of another year.

Rob said...

Papi going MUDDIN'!

allan said...

FLO!

SoSock said...

WELCOME BACK, PAPIIIIII !!

Jere said...

Row NN, okay, so almost up to the first row of blue seats--which, behind the plate, I believe is for families and stuff. So you could have Mrs. Rod Barajas kicking the back of your seat. But fear not, you're close enough to that screen hole spot where balls may reach you if they roll off the end of the screen without hitting the facing of the roof. OR, you'll at least be able to move up a few rows in the last few innings, depending on the score.

4-0! Papi almost coulda had a 3b there--gladly take the 2B though.

Joe Grav said...

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

Jere said...

Oh wait, unless Mrs. Rod Barajas is having an affair with an Indian, you won't get her. Maybe Jhonny's Wfie.

SoSock said...

Nomar with an ITP HR, altho it sounds like they scored it a hit and an error.
Didn't really look that way to me.

Shit - hell MUST be freezing over!

lurkkher said...

Wake's at 94 pitches. Will they send him out for the 9th?

Pepe Lepew said...

Wake, you magnificent relic of a bygone era.

Jere said...

Well even though my theory is always "never take Wake out," I think it really applies here. Nope--Pap warming. Why Pap, of all those guys? Three games in the next two days--I'd like to have him available for two!

Amy said...

Hi everyone. I have been without internet all day. What an odd experience.

I am so happy to see Wake has been so good tonight. Too bad the Rays got rained out.

SoSock said...

Why Pap, of all those guys? Three games in the next two days--I'd like to have him available for two!

My thoughts.....essackly!

Jere said...

I like the Rays having to play two tomorrow.

Hi Amy - I had assumed you went to a service. Not so, eh?

allan said...

if wake feels fine, let him go:

11-15-12 8-17-16 5-10 = 94

Jere said...

of course, let Wake finish--but DO said it appears he's done, and Pap is warming.

SoSock said...
