WS5: Phillies 8, Yankees 6

Yankees - 100 010 031 - 6 10 0
Phillies - 303 000 20x - 8 9 0
Chase Utley: 2 more home runs, 4 RBI; ties Reggie Jackson with 5 HR in a WS; ties Willie Aikens with two 2-HR games in a WS.

Burnett: 2-4-6-4-2, 53!Derek Jeter was the potential tying run with no outs in the top of the ninth. And ..... GIDP!

Pedro in New York on Wednesday!
Example
A.J. Burnett (G2: 7-4-1-2-9, 108) / Cliff Lee (G1: 9-6-1-0-10, 122)

Forty-three teams have held a 3-1 lead in the World Series, and 37 of those teams went on to win the championship. The six that could not close the deal?
1903 Pirates - lost to Boston Americans (best of 9)
1925 Senators - lost to Pirates
1958 Milwaukee - lost to Yankees
1968 Cardinals - lost to Tigers
1979 Orioles - lost to Pirates
1985 Cardinals - lost to Royals
Can the Yankees, no strangers to choking in the post-season, become #7?

Since 1969, of the 16 times a team has held a 3-1 lead in the World Series, only three times has the series even gone to a Game 7 -- no matter who won.

Jim Salisbury, Philadelphia Inquirer:
The Phillies had 12 winning streaks of three or more games this season.

Do they have one more in them?
If the Phillies win tonight, there will be a World Series Game 6 for the first time since 2003. The five World Series since then have been sweeps or gone five games.

Also: GDGD, 1911.

"Baby New York", indeed. Grrrr ....

Isn't that amazing? You would think FOX and MLB would be rooting for the Yanks to lose tonight and Wednesday in that case. Probably not...

A Philadelphia newspaper has apologized to readers for mistakenly running an ad congratulating the Philadelphia Phillies on winning back-to-back World Series titles. ...
The three-quarter-page Macy's ad is on the back of the front section and features a T-shirt with the Phillies logo, the commissioner's trophy and the phrase "Back To Back World Series Champions."

Here is the ad.

Milk Dud is done - taken off the roster and tonight replaced in the lineup by Gardner. Jeter, Damon, Teixiera, A-Rod, Swisher, Cano, Gardner, Molina, Burnett.

If Cliff Lee doesn't beat this lineup Philly doesn't deserve to win a World Series for the next thousand years.

Come on Phillies. Win one game. Tonight.

Unknown said...

YES!!

allan said...

or 3-1.

whatever.

Unknown said...

This is the A. J. Burnett I remember from the regular season.

Rob said...

An expected OTT there.

Good evening everyone.

Amy said...

Hi, everyone. So far, so good. But alas, Philadelphia seems to keep blowing these early leads.

I sure don't like the thought that tonight might be the last baseball game until April...

laura k said...

Why so gloomy? They have a lead and are cruising. They never had the lead last night.

allan said...

another BB from big game beavis.

allan said...

mfy calling the pen.

allan said...

about phuckin' time.

Amy said...

Me? Gloomy? LOL. Just being prepared for the end of baseball. Always makes me a bit gloomy.

But now it is 5-1, and I am feeling a bit more cheery!

allan said...

AJ being AJ!!!!

on short rest -- he comes up short

laura k said...

Whoo-hoo! 5-1 and Amy cheers up! :)

Rob said...

Hey, Cletus, you hear that? That's the sound of your world getting rocked!

Unknown said...

Yep, much more like the Burnett from the regular season.

Rob said...

Ken Rosenthal makes it sound like it'd be an unthinkable scenario for there to be a Game 6. Look at the scoreboard, Tiny Tim.

Amy said...

So glad I don't have to look at that guy's ugly face again. Will we be spared seeing him again in Game 7?

allan said...

and damon's gonna keep on running to ny ...

to lose some more on wednesday.

allan said...

yep
pettitte on short rest in 6
cc on short rest in 7

Amy said...

HAHAHAH!

Got to love NL baseball now and then.

Jere said...

6-1 Emmereffers

laura k said...

I love it every day. I wish so much we had it.

Wheee, that was fun!

allan said...

aceves up.

yay -- how about 17-1 tonight?

laura k said...

Nice catch at 3B!

allan said...

ott, baby.

Amy said...

I always forget the nuances that come with NL baseball until the WS. I hated the DH when it started, but am so used to it now that it seems so quaint to see the pitcher at bat. But it does add some strategic maneuvers to the game that the DH has killed.

I like both versions, but just wish it was the same in both leagues.

Amy said...

Of course, I was a NL fan back when they adopted the DH rule, so I really thought it was an awful sellout by the AL.

Funny how you adapt to things.

I assume someone else here remembers when both leagues played the old-fashioned way? Right? I can't be the only one...

allan said...

despite my advanced age, i don't.

selig will never get rid of the DH, but i wish he would. say in five years, it'll be gone -- so all teams can adjust.

laura k said...

I'm sure used to the DH, but I'll never prefer it.

laura k said...

It's because of our advanced age that we can't remember!

Amy said...

I think that was the hardest adjustment for me in becoming a Sox fan in 75---accepting the DH thing.

Amy said...

That Jeter guy sure is pesky. :)

allan said...

dp pls

allan said...

his range is about the same as pesky's.

Amy said...

Hinske...where have they been hiding him?

Amy said...

Did Hinske come in for Milkdud?

allan said...

no, he ph for the pitcher.

dud is off the roster.

laura k said...

Pena is in for Melky.

Amy said...

Yeah, that's what I meant. Did he come on to the roster for MD?

laura k said...

Hinske's just on their bench.

Amy said...

Laura knew what I meant. :)

laura k said...

I am on your wavelength.

Rob said...

Most minor leagues use the DH too. So the last time the pitchers hit would be in high school or college. If there was no more DH I would wish for more offensive emphasis in the minor leagues for the pitchers.

Jere said...

Considering just about all levels of baseball use the DH except the NL, I'd think we're a lot closer to MLB switching over to all DH than no DH.

Amy said...

Good to have you back for the game thread, Laura. A lull in the workload for school? Or just feeling able/entitled to take a night for baseball?

Amy said...

Ouch

Jere said...

And Damon didn't go jumping up and down.

allan said...

i'm surprised damon didn't run into the wall too.

laura k said...

Thanks Amy. I take Mondays off, so a Monday night game is good for me. PLUS this week I also took Sunday off, too.

I was feeling really exhausted and burnt out, and decided to use my last paid day off for the year for some extra recoup time. (Work has been insanely busy too.) Having both Sunday and Monday off was very restorative.

Amy said...

I agree...more likely MLB will be all DH than move back in time.

laura k said...

Considering just about all levels of baseball use the DH except the NL, I'd think we're a lot closer to MLB switching over to all DH than no DH.

Absolutely. It's just wishful thinking on my part. I am quite sure it will never happen.

Amy said...

Smart to take the time while you can, Laura. Get your energy now before you are too worn down. Plus we are only a month or so from the end of semester crunch (assuming you are on a similar calendar).

Jere said...

San Diego Chicken just got seriously dissed.

allan said...

6 pitch ott inning for aceves.

laura k said...

My term ends December 7. Is yours similar?

I have no choice - I can't let myself become run down or I risk a fibro crash, which could put me out of commission for many days.

Amy said...

My classes end that first week in December after (US) Thanksgiving. Exams start the following week. Of course, I will then be grading until classes start again in January (though I do take a week off between Christmas and New Years).

Do you have exams in grad school, or is it mostly/only papers?

Jere said...

Yeahhhhh

Amy said...

I am feeling pretty confident about a Game 6.

laura k said...

YES! K

No exams, only papers. An annoying number of group projects, too. I understand our professional life will require a lot of collaborative projects, but presumably we'd be doing that on work time. Finding the time to meet with other students for projects is difficult.

laura k said...

A little insurance pls

Amy said...

What a dumb remark by Hamels.

Amy said...

I assign a number of group projects to my first year students and hear the same complaints/concerns. But I do think learning to collaborate and share ideas is important. Most lawyers have to do that, no matter how or where they practice. But I am sympathetic to the logistical and other issues they create.

allan said...

almost robbie!! hahahah

Amy said...

That Rollins guy is pretty pesky also.

allan said...

PASSEDBALLA!!

laura k said...

The Phillies radio announcers marvel at what a bad defensive catcher Posada is.

allan said...

phillies radio has been making fun of dumbo's catching skills tonight!

Rob said...

I like the Phillies radio announcers. Was listening to them in the car last night and tonight.

laura k said...

It's a school policy, so I'm in for a lot of it. But for a part-time student, only on campus 2 days a week, it's awful.

laura k said...

Ish, I really like them too. They're among the best I've heard.

allan said...

SIT DOWN DUMBO!!!!!!!!

they are ripping him.

"must not know the rules"

laura k said...

Sientase, Jorgea

laura k said...

Amy, since you have asked about this before... we are getting a rent rebate for each month since the flood. Not as much as I asked for, but an amount we feel ok about.

Jere said...

Gold, Jerry, gold!

Rob said...

One person I follow on Twitter is at the game tonight. Saw a girl with a sign that had an arrow pointing next to the guy she was with and the sign said, "Jayson Werth, I wish you were him."

Also reported a heckler started a small "Hip, hip, you're gay!" chant around him.

Jere said...

Jeter's bat shard turned to cotton candy and landed in the mouths of several starving children in the crowd, I'm sure. Teach it? Can't.

laura k said...

That sign seems backwards to me. Shouldn't it say, Jayson Werth, I wish this was you?

Rob said...

L, that was probably it. LMAO.

Sounds like someone did get hurt by the bat.

Amy said...

That's great about the rent rebate, Laura and Allan. Sounds like you have a fairly reasonable landlord. How are the renovations going?

allan said...

phil pen quiet. lee at 103. smart? he might be needed in game 7.

laura k said...

They're going. Finally. Hopefully by December we'll be done. We can't wait!!

I recently realized we have exactly as much space now as we had in our last apt in NYC, plus the backyard. That felt roomy, but now we are cramped!

How's your house?

allan said...

hughes up

Amy said...

Our house is great! We are very happy. Rebecca and Brian were here to see it for the first time this weekend and loved it. It was great to have a full house for the weekend, great to have it back to ourselves again!

laura k said...

UTLEY AGAIN!!!!!!

allan said...

HOLY SHIT --- AGAIN!!!

Amy said...

Utley = Reggie Jackson!

Jere said...

Liberty Bell Dong

Rob said...

WOW. Foul dong then a fair dong!

laura k said...

Amy, that's wonderful. Animals all good?

Yeah, Utley tied Reggie's ML record! Nice.

Rob said...

I wish the Red Sox liked to show their dongs as much as Utley and Werth do!

nick said...

They're just tying records all over the place!

laura k said...

It seems after a long foul like that, you rarely see a dong.

SoSock said...

Damn, sure am glad tonight's not going to be the last game.
Been out of puter/phone range for most of the last 2 days. Didn't find out who won last night until a couple of hours ago.

Damn Yankees......

Jere said...

SoSock! I owe you a magnet. Email me!

Amy said...

Yup, pets are all well. Cassie somehow ate something she shouldn't have last week---we can't figure out how. But she was sick again, cost us another $700, but is fine now. We think she somehow got into the cat litter, disgusting as that may seem. Dogs can be so dumb.

How are yours? New sitter still working out well?

laura k said...

DONGS A POPPIN'!!!!!!

Unknown said...

RAUUUUUUUUUUUL!!!

Amy said...

Wow, SoSock, were you in the wilderness? :)

(I bet you remember pre-DH baseball, right?)

Jere said...

8-2. Don't stop now.

SoSock said...

Just finished reading the recap. 2-11 w/ runners in scoring pos.
Damn!
Phillies squandred a geat chance to destroy CC

laura k said...

Damn Yankees? They're losing! This is good!

laura k said...

Oh yeah, dogs can be so gross. Cat litter is the least of what they'll eat. Glad she's ok now.

Ours are fine. Cody is doing great with her DAP collar - she's years younger. It's great. Weekend person is still great, she is staying over while we're in NY/NJ for T'giving, our annual road trip.

Amy said...

I think SoSock is reading about last night's game!

SoSock said...

Amy - been in Yosemite Pk for 3 days. In Fresno now, heading south.
Jere - I know. I've been swamped getting ready for this trip and just haven't taken time to stop and do that.
Probably won't be here long now either. Meeting my son's "California Girl" for dinner!

allan said...

yeah - bring in the guy with the 10.80 ERA!

laura k said...

I believe SoSock was in the wilderness.

Amy said...

That's great about the sitter.

Remind me about the collar? I may remember pre-DH baseball, but the short term stuff...not so much. :)

SoSock said...

L - Amy's right. I was just reading the recap from last night.
Hey, we know a team cam win 3 in a row, right?

Jere said...

If the Phillies blow this, I'm not watching another baseball game this year.

SoSock said...

OK, I'm outta here. The gal is here.
Later!

Jere said...

"Hey, we know a team cam win 3 in a row, right?"

Also, 4.

Amy said...

Sounds like a great trip, SoSock!

laura k said...

SoSock, I knew that. I was trying to keep us in the present. :)

Amy, see here. A collar that emits a pheromone that only dogs can smell, that calms them and helps them feel secure. It doesn't work on all dogs, but we lucked out. It's made a huge difference for Cody. No risk, no side effects.

laura k said...

If the Phillies blow this, I'm not watching another baseball game this year.

*eye rolling*

:)

allan said...

with only 6 outs to go and up by 6, do NOT like flee still out there.

Amy said...

Guess they need that travel day tomorrow to get all the way back to the Bronx from Philadelphia.

Amy said...

Good for Cody! That's terrific.

Do they have a collar to keep dogs from eating cat shit?

allan said...

manuel, you dumb inbred motherfucker.

Amy said...

Uh oh. Only a four run lead.

Damn Yankees.

laura k said...

We could have used a collar like that - for a dog that ate *her own* shit. Lovely.

OK Phillies, hold your phour run lead.

Jere said...

Two of these should have been outs.

laura k said...

ok, doing my usual end of game w/o threading thing. see you all for game 6! (actually i won't, but i'll be watching.)

allan said...

thanks tv for letting me know kate liked it.

Amy said...

Good night, Laura. Will we see you for Game 7?

Amy said...

Three run lead...

Come on, you jerks. Do you want baseball to end tonight? Do you want to blow a 6 run lead?

allan said...

up by 3, 4 outs to go -- not a problem

Jere said...

That's your defensive replacement? The guy caught that ball like he didn't know there was a man on third, and then his weak-ass throw couldn't get a guy who wasn't even intending to try to score at first.

Amy said...

And is Lidge coming in for the 9th? I am feeling Papelbonish concerns.

allan said...

one phillies radio guy seems not to know victorino's hand got hurt - thinks he just begged out of the game.

????????

Jere said...

Or if you're talking about pennant/World Series level blown saves, "Rivera-ish concerns."

allan said...

up by 3 and 3 outs to go

if these phuckers can't preserve that, fuck 'em.

Rob said...

No problem just as long as Lidge doesn't pitch.

Jere said...

Begged out? He was so clearly trying to stay IN the game!

allan said...

funny - clueless philly radio guy is pissed that francisco is in CF, said angrily that he "has no arm" then cut himself off, but it was too late!!

allan said...

routine grounder - jeter can't get it.

Benjamin said...

Past an ambling Jeter.

allan said...

hughes showing his displeasure!!!

Amy said...

Three more outs, and I can go to sleep and not be aggravated.

Unknown said...

Time to send this series back to the toilet.

Unknown said...

Ugh

allan said...

myers up

fuckin dumbo.

Amy said...

Can't we just have an easy OTT? WHY?

Benjamin said...

At least Lidge isn't warming, eh.

allan said...

too close to a dong.
just get outs

allan said...

we need a CIDP from mr. clutch.

Jere said...

They're all pensive and shit now, but imagine if the Phils had just scored 3 in bottom 8 to make it 8-5? It'd be a party right now. That's why baseball's the greatest game. Suzyn.

Amy said...

What does it mean that they did not use their closer in a save situation? No confidence? Or his arm is tired?

Unfucking believable. If the Phillies blow it, they deserve it.

allan said...

eyre and lidge up

allan said...

no need to make it interesting.

really.

allan said...

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

CIDP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TANGIBLE>

Amy said...

You called it, Allan!

Jere said...

hahahahahahaha

Benjamin said...

Calm eyes.

Unknown said...

HUGE DP

Amy said...

But only a two run lead. Please get this next out.

allan said...

end it, noodle.

Benjamin said...

What does it mean that they did not use their closer in a save situation? No confidence? Or his arm is tired?

As someone said, Lidge's ERA is a Boeing jetliner model.

Amy said...

Pedro tomorrow?!

Amy said...

I mean Wednesday.

Amy said...

Yes, Lidge makes Papelbon look invincible.

Amy said...

God damn Damon.

allan said...

doosheira = mr. 27

Amy said...

Tying run at the plate...this is so annoying.

Dr. Jeff said...

This is crazy.

Jere said...

Papelbon has been nearly invincible his entire career.

allan said...

27th out that is

Amy said...

Don't get me started on Papelbon. I am working on forgiveness. Give me until April.

Amy said...

I wondered what you meant by #27!

allan said...

CHEESESTEAK

Benjamin said...

Water.

Amy said...

OK, we get to see Pedro again!

Amy said...

Good night, all. See you next time.

Unknown said...

Game 6

Go Pedro

Rob said...

I feel like we should be having some off-day outtakes tomorrow with all these game threads! :)

See you all Wednesday.

allan said...

I'm not prepared for outtakes!

allan said...

I feel like we should be having some off-day outtakes tomorrow with all these game threads! :)

Who do you want to hear?

SoSock said...

Back to the Big Apple! Yay!
The last time the Yankees were up 3-2 in a series they lost games 6 & 7. Heres to history!
