G28: Red Sox 3, Angels 1

Angels - 000 010 000 - 1 2 0
Red Sox - 010 100 01x - 3 11 0
Lackey (7-2-1-2-4, 102) shut down his former team with very little fuss, David Ortiz hit an opposite field solo home run in the fourth, and Adrian Beltre, after singled in Boston's first run, slammed a dong over the camera platform in center field for some eighth inning insurance. Which wasn't needed, because Bard and Bot were totally awesome.

The Angels had only two hits: Kendry Morales's single to left to start the second and Brandon Wood's solo homer in the fifth. Wood came up with the bases loaded in the second, Lackey's only worrisome frame: Morales had singled, Maicer Izturis walked with one out and then, with two down, a thread on Mike Napoli's uniform was grazed by a pitch to load the bases. Wood (1-for-12 in his career with the sacks juiced) struck out.

Flo had a single and a walk to go with his tater; Dustin Pedroia singled twice and walked, Beltre was 3-for-4; and Kevin Youkilis singled in the seventh after striking out in his first three trips. Third base coach Tim "Wendell" Bogar sent Marco Scutaro to the plate on Yook's single, and even with Shemp's not unexpected crappy off-line throw, Scutaro was out. With Boston ahead 2-1 at the time and the possibility of having Drew up with the bases loaded with only one out, it was a moronic decision.

But Terry Francona got a W in his 1,000th game as Red Sox manager (579-421).
Example
Joel Pineiro / John Lackey
Scuatro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Hall, CF
The Rays, Yankees and Blue Jays all won yesterday, so Boston (13-14) remains 6.5 GB in 4th place. Toronto and New York both play this afternoon, while Tampa Bay plays tonight.

The Red Sox will honour Nomar Garciaparra before the game (#5 on 5/5).

X-rays of Clay Buchholz's left ankle were negative. "If it had been an inch lower, it would have been bad - it would have been right on my ankle bone."

Jacoby Ellsbury took batting practice yesterday for the first time since going on the disabled list.

TOR:001 010 003 - 5 11 0
CLE: 001 101 010 - 4 9 2

Tor 9: One run scores on an error, then Lind hits a two-run dong. Clev gets a 2-out double in the bottom half, but that's it.

Abraham notes:

David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Varitek, Darnell McDonald, Bill Hall and Mike Cameron taking extra BP.

Ellsbury taking swings without any apparent discomfort given how he's following through. ... BP's Will Carroll tweeted that there's a chance Ellsbury will play against the Yankees this weekend although not likely.

And Kevin Millar has decided to keep playing and joined the St. Paul Saints.

These guys suck. Lets sweep them and put these trying time behind us.

Zenslinger said...

Pettite came out of the Yanks game hurt. Joins Granderson, Posada, and Rivera. How's about they lose a few games now?

Preferably against us.

Amy said...

Wow, I am here for the start of a game. Seems to have been a while.

Have I missed the Nomah ceremony?

Amy said...

Nevah mind. Here it is.

Amy said...

Hey, did you know his dad's name is Ramon and that is Nomar spelled backwards??

:)

Amy said...

That was sweet. Good to see some of those old familiar faces again.

Amy said...

Figures I am here, and no one else is around. Oh, well, I am used to talking to myself.

allan said...

i am always here. just a little late setting up

allan said...

jays played in the afternoon, do rogers has nesn!

Amy said...

I figured someone had to be doing the moderating.

allan said...

which is good because the package has the angels feed.

Patrick said...

MLB 'at bat' said that out pitch was at 95. Can Lackey throw that hard?

allan said...

nesn had the pitch that abreu hit to left at 96.

Amy said...

Did you get to see the ceremony?

Amy said...

OTT

Patrick said...

I did realize Lackey could throw that hard. I'm not high on the signing and have basically been ignoring him.

allan said...

yeah, whatever was on after 7, which i think was the whole (short) thing.

Patrick said...

didn't realize*

allan said...

i can never keep track of which park guns might be fast or slow.

Patrick said...

I like our little middle infielders.

Scutaro is exactly as advertised.

Patrick said...

Going by 'the book', it's a good move having V-Mart third.

Amy said...

Yes, it was short but sweet.

HIT!

allan said...

only a gut feeling, but the starters seem to be getting into a groove. hitting has been good enough. cameron should be back soon, hopefully lbj not far behind. i think we can have a very solid may.

Patrick said...

ouch, bad at bat for Youk.

Patrick said...

Nomah in the booth.

allan said...

in that nesn clip lackey looks like gomer pyle

allan said...

WOW -- FY!!!!!!!

allan said...

hbp should have to hit you, not only some shirt threads

Amy said...

What was that about our starters finding their groove?

allan said...

groovin'!

allan said...

An "OB Special"!

allan said...

thanks papi, you have been making me sad lately.

Amy said...

Papi! I'd like to see him being in the groove!

allan said...

YES!!!

Amy said...

YES! Not the best fielding there.

Patrick said...

lucky us. These Angels are snake bitten.

allan said...

snake in the grass bitten

Amy said...

Almost saw my first triple play.

allan said...

me too

wait we half-saw one in that minor league game in albequerque last year

Amy said...

half-saw? One and half outs? Or with only one eye?

allan said...

was raining hard, so we took cover, and did not quite see it all as clearly as if we were in our seats. i got a foul ball in that game too! i think i posted a blurry pic of it.

allan said...

nomar with don and jerry talking about playing in boston: "every day is life or death!"

Patrick said...

DP! I'm liking this.

allan said...

nomar sounds really happy and content.

Amy said...

Damn.

Patrick said...

Lining into a DP is just unfortunate.

Amy said...

Yes, I sort of recall the triple play story now.

I enjoyed listening to Nomar. I agree---he seems at peace.

allan said...

Foul Ball post - September 10, 2009.

Amy said...

1000th game for Francona!

Amy said...

Wow, has he really been managing that long? Seems like yesterday.

Amy said...

I have to say that Isotopes is a terrible name for ballteam.

Amy said...

So is it just me or does Papi look more like Medium Papi than BIG Papi?

Amy said...

But he can still hit them out!

allan said...

FLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good times!

Patrick said...

Large Father

Amy said...

Not so large father, if my eyes aren't fooling me.

allan said...

This is Tito's 7th season as Sox mgr!

Amy said...

Seven seasons---that's impressive. How long has Scioscia (sp?) been with the Angels? What current manager has the longest tenure with one team?

Amy said...

Nice play, Beltre!

Patrick said...

the braves manager right? is that Cox?

Patrick said...

Nixon sounds like such a hooligan.

allan said...

pretty sure i heard during this series that scioscia has the longest tenure.

...

ah, fuck that wood dude.

allan said...

scioscia has been pointing at his nose and ears (like a fucking GENIUS, btw!!!!!) in the LAA dugout since 2000.

Amy said...

Cox may be the oldest manager though.

allan said...

cox - right
threy must mean AL

Amy said...

Looks like Cox wins. Manager since 1990 for Atlanta and then a few years in the 80s as well.

allan said...

fy looking good.

allan said...

i was talking to laura about this last week -- i wonder what has to happen for there to be a big cry for tito to be fired. not this year per se, but ever. he has so much good will in the bank...

Michael Holloway said...

Just finished my afternoon game story and hey! there's a baseball game on. Yay,

Amy said...

I hope that never happens. He brought us two WS championships. He should be able to leave when he chooses.

Patrick said...

Youk can't figure out Pineiro.

Patrick said...

John Rich sounds nerdier than OB, but he backs up what he's saying with stats.

I appreciate that, John.

allan said...

michael -- i love when the jays play during the weekday because it almost always means rogers shows red sox/nesn at night

Michael Holloway said...

Did not know rogers showed red sox/nesn! Happy about it, I can watch along with you all, finally... And, it's Fenway Baseball after all.

allan said...

92 thru 6

lackey? likey.

allan said...

sportsnet, good old channel 22.

almost every time. it's great, since the extra innings package on those nights (like tonight) sometimes has the other team's feed.

allan said...

tiz up to .440 vs joelle

Patrick said...

Francona's been leaving the starters in way past 100 pitches. I think Lackey has a decent leash for completing the 7th.

allan said...

he might go 120 or so, which would mean the 8th too, i hope.

allan said...

beltre - it's an empty avg, but it's high.

allan said...

hey nesn -- you go to tappen, you SHOW tappen. got it?

Patrick said...

Beltre is loosening up. I could warm up to him still.

Patrick said...

Do you need 3 or 4 Ks for the golden shower??

allan said...

4

3: hat trick

allan said...

the bardinator is up

Michael Holloway said...

I see Ortiz is having success tonight good to see. All the spectacle baffle-gab nonsense can abate for a bit.

allan said...

so yook is getting ready to take the piss

so to speak

allan said...

scu scu scutaro!

allan said...

10 pitch 7th -- 102 for lackey.

Amy said...

So is Lackey done or not?

Michael Holloway said...

Scotoro's ballet school of assist!

allan said...

I say no.

allan said...

bard was up and he has been worked pretty often.

Michael Holloway said...

One thing leads to another.

Amy said...

Scutaro! Do we have a nickname yet for him? That's a lot to type.

allan said...

we should have 5 runs on nomar night, no?

allan said...

remy - you butcher every promo every night.

Patrick said...

Bounce back Youk

Dr. Jeff said...

"Scooter" is out for obvious reasons, though it's interesting that they were both SS.

Dr. Jeff said...

Nice slide, scooter.

allan said...

fucking god damn bohar -- what the fuck is wrong with that shithead

Patrick said...

bah

Michael Holloway said...

Catches a cleat or he probably pounces back to score.

allan said...

and only 1 fucking out

FUCK

allan said...

i really enjoyed not bitching about the 3B coach for a few years .......

Michael Holloway said...

High throw, runner moved to third - good thing...

Amy said...

Shit. Squander.

allan said...

and we have a fucking lead.

fucking wendell bogar

Amy said...

With a name like that, what would you expect? Wendell?

Amy said...

Guess Bard is in.

allan said...

jeemer up

allan said...

bard = nasty mf

allan said...

damn - the wood in that AB looked like me.

Michael Holloway said...

The bard has a way with 'words' I see.

Patrick said...

e z

Michael Holloway said...

period

Amy said...

INSURANCE. Please.

allan said...

bard is already one of my faves on this team. if he gets more control of that slider -- he could be our fruitbat.

or fruitbard, if you will.

allan said...

snuffer up

Amy said...

I am not sure I have what it takes to watch Papelbon pitch with only a one run lead.

Dr. Jeff said...

NICE.

Amy said...

Two run lead feels better. :)

allan said...

DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

bot's been damn good lately, but i understand

Michael Holloway said...

Angels pitcher Brian Fuentes has a very unusual delivery. Short arm movement - and the down low pitch with the same short arm thing.

Amy said...

I am haunted by two many blown saves. I have a low tolerance for tension. In case you haven't noticed over the last 3 seasons!

Amy said...

too many

Dr. Jeff said...

I can't believe how cheesy the Foxwoods commercials are.

allan said...

i am familiar with the idea - laura used to leave the room when foulke came in - she could hear but would not look

allan said...

that was 04 - l and foulke

Amy said...

I think the JOS game was the real end of my faith in Pap.

Dr. Jeff said...

THAT was a great pitch.

Amy said...

Phew.

allan said...

OHHHHHH

hall!!

allan said...

Hall: "WOW!"

allan said...

i was going to say jos1 scarred you, but i wasn't sure if that was accurate.

Amy said...

Two down.

Amy said...

It scarred and scared me...at least of Pap.

Michael Holloway said...

ws that a tick?

Amy said...

Thank the stars! Dirty water!

Amy said...

Oops. Got a head of myself there.

Dr. Jeff said...

Awesome! Bring your brooms tomorrow.

allan said...

The water is Muddy!!!

3 in a row -- it's like the many ALCSes of old!!

Amy said...

NOW the water is dirty!

Amy said...

Good night, everyone.

Michael Holloway said...

Congratulations - 3 in a row and Ortiz bats in the go-ahead run?

nick said...

coming in late on this, but if it weren't for notbot we wouldn't have had those free bonus innings.

(I'm pretty sure we paid for them.)

Happy muddy muddy!

some one tag Lackey's mannerisms as those of Gomer Pyle.. He nailed him.
You might have a name for him. Someone needs to post the lip curl down with the two Pyle's together.
