G30: Yankees 10, Red Sox 3

Yankees - 000 306 010 - 10 11 0
Red Sox - 000 101 010 - 3 9 0

Example
Phil Hughes / Josh Beckett
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Drew, RF
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Varitek, C
McDonald, CF
After a couple of bad starts, Beckett rebounded against the Orioles (7-6-2-0-6, 106) last Sunday. Hughes has been outstanding. In 25 innings over four starts, he has allowed only 10 hits (including nine singles) and four runs, though he has walked 12. Right-handed batters are 3-for-39 against him this year (.077, with a .199 OPS).

Here is your series preview, courtesy of SoSH's mabrowndog. You won't find anything anywhere even 10% as good. Snips:
NYY - 19-8 (.704)
2nd in AL East
1.0 game behind TB
2nd best record in AL

BOS - 15-14 (.517)
4th in AL East
6.5 games behind TB
6th (T) best record in AL ...
It's fair to say the Yankees have yet to be truly tested. The average current W-L record of the teams they've played so far is 13.1-16.0, and only 3 of their 27 games have been against teams with a record better than 15-14. Meanwhile the Sox' average oppositional W-L is 14.6-14.3 with 13 of 29 games against teams better than 15-14. ...

Pettitte (14.9), Burnett (14.0), Sabathia (12.2) and Hughes (11.3) rank 4th, 5th, 8th and 12th in VORP among AL starting pitchers. They're 15-1 with a 2.14 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and a .216/.288/.300/.588 opponents' batting line. ...

Where the Yankees appear to have flubbed their management of Joba Chamberlain's development, they've hit it out of the park with Hughes. ... [a ton of solid info on Hughes]

What the hell is up with Cap'n Intangibles' low walk total? Just 5 in 123 PA, or 4.1%?? He's on pace for the lowest walk rate and OBP of his career ... Sure enough, he's swinging at far more junk outside the strike zone ... [hitting] a shitload more grounders ...

Curtis Granderson's on the 15-day DL with a groin strain and is likely out until late May. ... An MRI revealed inflammation of [Pettitte's elbow] joint but no ligament damage. ... [Posada missed two games] with a "mild calf strain" ... The 40-year-old Rivera hasn't pitched since April 30 and wasn't available at all this week due to "left side stiffness", whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. ...
Tampa Bay (12-1 on the road this year) is in Oakland tonight.

And: Andre Ethier of the Dodgers has 11 walk-off hits since 2008. No other player has more than five. ... Joe Posnanski remembers Robin Roberts and explains why baseball has never been better than it is right now.

When Beckett & Eveland meet in Toronto 2 starts ago they had almost identical lines:

Beckett 3.0IP,9H,8R,3BB,3K,
Eveland 3.0IP,8H,7R,3BB,3K,

Last night Toronto pitcher Dana Eveland threw a gem of a game in Chicago: Eveland 7.0IP,2H,0R,4BB,3K,

Is Beckett likely to mirror Eveland again?

Egocentrically navel gazing,

I agree.

Great Posanski article. It may be a little early to call him a national treasure, but he's certainly my favorite writer.

P-Abe: The Red Sox have 11+ hits in each of their last four games. They are now third in baseball in OPS (.818) and sixth in runs scored with 150. ... The Yankees have RHP Romulo Sanchez. It's likely Andy Pettitte is headed to the disabled list.

It's fair to say the Yankees have yet to be truly tested . . . [O]nly 3 of their 27 games have been against teams with a record better than 15-14.

NYY to date have played Boston (3), Tampa (3), Texas (3), and Oakland (3).

Also, the Angels . . . took 3 of 4 from the Yankees in Anaheim last week.

But they played only 3 games (LAA won 2).

9casey said...

I find it amazing that the New York media hasn't given Cashman a hard time about Austin Jackson, yet....

I Believe in 5 years that maybe one of the worst trade in yankee history..

allan said...

NYY to date have played Boston (3), Tampa (3), Texas (3), and Oakland (3).

And only one of those teams has a better than 15-14 record: Tampa (3). The 3 games PA refers to. (NYY has also played CWS and BAL, who are worse than 15-14.)

So what's the problem?

Philip said...

9c: I highly doubt it. Jackson's been buoyed by one of the most ridiculously unsustainable BABIPs in baseball. Look at his K and BB rates. There is literally no way he keeps this up.

allan said...

.512??!?!?!?!?

He has a .512 BABIP???!? Holy shit!

FakePeteAbe said...

Crud. I misread it. Initially processed it as including 15-14.

He is 23!!. the numbers he has right now will are a little crazy....but this kid is going to be good , real good.....the yankees said they wanted to get younger, and they trade away their top prospect for Curtis Granderson......Top Prospect = Curtis Granderson, I don't think so.

allan said...

When Jackson gets his bat on the ball (he leads the AL in K), his average is .512!

That cannot be maintained. Check back with Jackson at the break.

Some Sox BABIP: FY .288; Yook .329; Beltre .386; Drew .308; Tiz .195; Lowell .316.

Beltre's gonna come down to Earth, too.

Shonda Schilling has written a book about her family: "The Best Kind of Different"

After several years of public and private outbursts by their young son Grant, the Schillings at last learned the reason in the summer of 2007. That is when Grant Schilling was diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder called Asperger's Syndrome. ... Though the diagnosis was chilling -- as it would be for any parents and siblings -- it was also a bit of a relief for the Schillings to finally know why Grant struggled so much with seemingly routine things. ...

Shonda learned that three of her four children have ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). That is something that Curt has long had and been medicated for. Aside from having ADHD, Gehrig, the oldest, had a bout with anorexia as a young teen. Overwhelmed by it all, Shonda wound up being medicated for depression ...

"There were so many times that I felt so alone and I was smiling my way through it at the ballpark and I was pretending to be [happy], but I was dying inside," Schilling said ...

Wow, I am so torn. Going to dinner at a friend's. Then we might go to the Gallery Hop downtown, which I almost never get to attend.
But it's the Sox v Yankees!
Damn. Decisions, decisions. Guess I'll see how much vino we have with dinner and let that decide.
I'm thinking we get 2 out this series, just hope we can get to Hughes tonight. I hate be "up against a wall" in terms of the series after the 1st game. He's tough, but the bats are on a roll.
Oh and Laura - Great letter!

Beltre's gonna come down to Earth, too.

Let's hope his power picks up as he does.

So it looks like Harvey and I are going to be written up in an article next month in the Yankees magazine. A friend from high school who is a freelance writer wrote a piece about Yankee-Red Sox relationships interviewed us and said "our story" will be included in her article.

Unfortunately she is a Yankee fan so sold her story to them, not the Sox.

laura k said...

That's cool, Amy. I hope you'll be happy with the results.

Here's a quite old book with a different take:

Amy said...

Yeah, I am hoping that it is not slanted towards the Yankees, but whatever. Only Yankee fans will read it anyway.

Zenslinger said...

Good Gawd, Josh!

laura k said...

KKKKK

allan said...

groovin'!

Zenslinger said...

Wow. 5k.

I think he went 1-2 on everyone but Tex.

laura k said...

It shouldn't really be slanted towards either team, if it's about mixed couples.

We used to always say we would pitch a story about our mixed r'ship before a big series was coming up... and then never thought of it early enough.

I think one story about Allan's book used that angle, IIRC. Some Chicago writer.

Amy said...

Well, I will report back on the story. I assume no one here subscribes to that periodical! I am hoping Laurie (the author) sends me some copies.

laura k said...

laura k said...

Of course, last night we were down 4-0 and still won handily.

Amy said...

OH FUCK YOU, Swisher.

Amy said...

Yeah, I am cool with 3-0.

allan said...

beckett: let me see you dance.

allan said...

3rd out, pls -- then we can give hughes some ptsd.

laura k said...

OK. Runs. Please. Now.

Well, after this commercial.

allan said...

kinda quiet tonight.

allan said...

fire!

swisher plays it on a hop.

laura k said...

Here we go! Fire and Sweat, B2B

allan said...

yoooooooooooook

okay -- set the wayback machine to 2004 ........

Amy said...

There goes the no hitter.

laura k said...

Friday nights are usually quiet on the thread.

But also the Bruins are playing.

Amy said...

I bet a lot of JOSers are watching hockey.

Hey we have a RAT!

laura k said...

Right away, Mr Peabody

allan said...

hockey, right.

Amy said...

Papi, please be BIG Papi.

allan said...

shit, we needed last night's wind on that.

Amy said...

And there goes the shutout!

Amy said...

So I do not know anything about hockey, but is this do or die for the Bruins tonight?

Amy said...

Another RAT

allan said...

nice, but we need to do this before there are 2 outs.

Amy said...

FY's time to shine.

Amy said...

Damn.

allan said...

where did cano get hit?

allan said...

ouch! tek hurt

laura k said...

Cano, I didn't see. Too much multitasking going on here.

Benjamin said...

Cano got hit at the top of his left kneecap.

Benjamin said...

Not our assholes, Beckett. Stick with hurting the other assholes.

meunier said...

The other way around, it is win or go home for the Flyers. They are leading 3-2 at the start of the 3rd.

laura k said...

The other way round what?

laura k said...

Oh never mind, just saw Amy's earlier comments. Yes, do or die from Flyers. They are not going quietly.

Benjamin said...

Stop staring at Tek's ass and start calling strikes strikes, Fletcher.

allan said...

dicks on the pond

laura k said...

oh holy shit

allan said...

good work, josh.

Amy said...

Thanks for the hockey info. I am just so out of that loop. Never understood that game. All that skating back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, until suddenly, without any warning, someone scores. It's like some bizarro version of basketball---back and forth, back and forth, scoring most of the time, until time runs out. Not a fan of either sport.

Good thing because I have a hard enough time finding time for baseball!

laura k said...

crap crap crap

bullpen up

allan said...

did not like putting gardner on. cervelli is no world beater, but he was 2-for-2.

Amy said...

OK, this game is no longer much fun.

laura k said...

WTF is going on?

allan said...

beckett going all doc-ellis-vs-the-reds on the mfy.

laura k said...

oy

laura k said...

Beltre being Knoblauch, starting to talk to the ump before making the out.

Amy said...

So...I am glad I don't have to bat for the Red Sox after Beckett hit all these guys. What the hell is he doing? Has he lost all control? He couldn't have intended to force in runs (let alone hit Varitek).

laura k said...

Are we trying to make Girardi apologize?

allan said...

booooooooooooooooooo!

laura k said...

I think hockey is more like soccer than basketball - lots of back and forth, but also lots of frustration and low scoring. Baskets are very common, goals are not.

I don't follow any sport but baseball, but I do find hockey very exciting.

allan said...

more than a few of those inside pitches seemed on purpose. (but you gotta be some kind of pissed to hbp guys with the bases loaded)

laura k said...

No, he clearly didn't intend to run up the score for NY!

meunier said...

Has Beckett gotten hurt somehow?

Kathryn said...

A great big crapola.

laura k said...

If those pitches were intentional, Josh would have to be completely insane. It's one thing to put a guy on base when they're empty or there's one on. But intentionally putting the game almost out of reach?

"27 minute wait for..."

allan said...

man, talk about spitting the bit.

laura k said...

Ow, saw the Cano HBP that time. Ouch.

Kathryn said...

A--Maybe not intentional, but more of an "I don't give a shit if this hits anybody." I don't think his head is right.

laura k said...

ON FIRE gets us going again!

Amy said...

I agree---Beckett could not have intended those HBP (or hitting Varitek), but what the hell happened to his control?? Scary.

laura k said...

Gee, if people think those HBPs were intentional, will they rip into Josh the way they did for Manny's supposedly give-up AB?

laura k said...

OK, 9-2 is better than 9-1.

And Papi is our RBI machine tonight. ;)

Amy said...

Has anyone on air suggested they were intentional??

laura k said...

Allan did. I assume if he saw it that way, others must have, too.

allan said...

Nothing on NESN. They are saying they cannot possibly be on purpose, with the bases loaded, etc. Not really discussing his poor command either. They've moved on.

laura k said...

V-Mart batting for Cactus

allan said...

i will say that my first thought when jeter got hit to force in a run that tito was going to yank him right then and there because he was annoyed/frustrated/pissed off and it was on purpose. what i think means nothing, but that was my immediate thought.

Amy said...

I think hockey is more like soccer than basketball

And yet I like soccer...

Tek out. Stupid Josh.

allan said...

wakefield in

Amy said...

Wakefield coming in to confuse the Yankees.

Amy said...

Well, then Beckett needs to go to anger management classes. That's just crazy. What was he pissed off about? Giving up a home run? Get over it!

laura k said...

I wonder if the Bruins are choking this away

laura k said...

yoooooooook

laura k said...

oops, sorry Bruins fans. they tied it with 31 seconds left

allan said...

remy watching bruins and not sox, clearly.

Amy said...

Well, at least Boston fans have something to cheer about tonight.

9casey said...

Leiter didn't think they were on purpose, unless Beckett just doesn't care...

9casey said...

And Yes had A-rod calling Josh a "fucking asshole"

9casey said...

Amy said...
Well, then Beckett needs to go to anger management classes. That's just crazy. What was he pissed off about? Giving up a home run? Get over it!

It lookied like he called Swisher a "fag" twice..

laura k said...

Well if Swisher doesn't want to be caled a fag, he should change his name :)

laura k said...

This Boston fan has nothing to cheer about.

So politically incorrect , for you..:)

laura k said...

So politically incorrect , for you..:)

Only in company that knows I'm joking. I say stuff like that all the time at home. :)

Yes, playing again tomorrow. This is good.

allan said...

But did Beckett yell "I'll make you suck my ass!" or "A dog must have fucked your mother when she made you!"?

allan said...

2 out of 3 soots me!

plus we'll win the brawl on one of those days.

laura k said...

Ah, the good old days, when baseball was a family game.

laura k said...

I'm out of the thread for the night. They better win tomorrow for Amy!

G'night all.

Amy said...

Good night, Laura, and thanks!
