G31: Yankees 14, Red Sox 3

Yankees - 002 130 242 - 14 17 0
Red Sox - 003 000 000 - 3 8 1
Shoulda called it.

Game resumed at 6:25. Martinez fouled out to second against Alfredo Aceves to end the fifth. Manny Delcarmen is taking over for Buchholz (5-9-6-5-1, 93; 1 unearned run).

Rain delay at 5:11 with a 2-2 count on Victor Martinez, a runner on first and two outs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the space of two pitches, the sky opened up and suddenly sheets of rain were coming down. Because the Red Sox are still batting in the bottom of the fifth -- though Sabathia was one strike away from ending the inning -- the game is not official.
Example
CC Sabathia / Clay Buchholz

If the weather allows:
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Lowell, DH
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hall, LF
McDonald, CF

I liked Posnanski's article until this line: "Derek Jeter, in aura, is today’s DiMaggio." I can't believe they were mentioned in the same sentence, and hope it never happens again.

allan said...

Is this better?

***

This will make you puke. Possibly literally. ... You may want to brave it, though, because in it I prove beyond all question that I am the Walt Whitman of the 21st Century.

laura k said...

He did say "in aura," by which I think he means celebrity. It's debatable, but it's not an insane assertion.

laura k said...

Sounds like tarp is coming off and pitchers are warming.

Joe Gravellese said...

do we have an estimated start time? we need a W!

laura k said...

Starting on time.

Win.

laura k said...

whew. got out of it. now settle down, double H.

Zenslinger said...

Does first inning, by definition, just have to be really hairy?

mattymatty said...

Nice to see HH get out of that situation which, other than the walk, really wasn't his fault a all.

laura k said...

I'm starting to think so.

allan said...

caught up on work for the moment. fox video with sox radio ...

mattymatty said...

Good job, guys. Saving up all the hits for one inning. Like the strategy.

mattymatty said...

I'm going to say something I shouldn't: the back 1/3 of the Yankee lineup looks pretty bad.

laura k said...

Why shouldn't you say that? Seems like a good thing to say.

Zenslinger said...

Is Cano really in RF?

allan said...

No, DH.

laura k said...

Sweatingle!

allan said...

i am going to the kitchen. feel free to bop a dong, mike.

allan said...

a single? okay.

go, drew!

(FUCK YOU OB, you douche)

allan said...

alright i fixed my set-up.

just video, no audio!

mattymatty said...

How do you kill a two on no out rally? How 'bout first guy strikes out, next guy grounds into a double play. Well done!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

squander

allan said...

But at least he didn't LOOK at the third strike.

Because that would have given the Yankees a run ... or something.

allan said...

How about "an hour of silence"?

Joe Gravellese said...

BTW L-girl, I don't want to get you too excited as it's far from a sure thing, but based on the job offers I have on the table, I may be moving to nyc.

If that happens, you are going to get *so many* emails from me for suggestions. just sayin'

mattymatty said...

L-Girl - That's why I shouldn't have said it.

mattymatty said...

This inning smells bad. Can't start first two guys off 2-0...

Joe Gravellese said...

Because that would have given the Yankees a run ... or something.

hahahaha

we should develop new baseball rules that properly value things the way sportswriters think they're valued

Joe Gravellese said...

nationals lead again late. :O

mattymatty said...

I don't know how accurate MLB's GameDay app is, but it looks like HH is getting squeezed a bit.

mattymatty said...

Its amazing how different GameDay's strike zone is compared to that of the Sox announcers on EEI.

mattymatty said...

That's the second 0-2 hit that HH has given up this game.

allan said...

SNAKE!

mattymatty said...

DAMN IT! Should've been two..

laura k said...

Mattymatty, because your typing that sentence affected the game? You are very powerful.

Joe, bring it on!! Very cool. Is it a job you want?

laura k said...

SECRET WEAPON strikes again!

allan said...

now that's a 'wave i like!

Patrick said...

DARNELL MC-FUCKING-DONALD!!!

allan said...

And on that pitch he hit a dong ...

Zenslinger said...

(Am I the first to pull that annoying little gem out for a McDonald hit?)

Zenslinger said...

I'm lovin' it!

allan said...

Would a grand slam be a Happy Meal?

Zenslinger said...

Yours is better, RS. ("And on that pitch...")

allan said...

i think i'll avoid referring to destructive, multinational corporations in my quips [sic].

Patrick said...

Oooh man, I wish Pedey would charge. P dizzle vs. C.C. behemoth

Zenslinger said...

No, I'd call it a Super Size Dong or something.

On another note, Johnny Damon has the exact same OPS he had all last year (.854). Fewer HRs (1 so far) but a ton of doubles (10).

Zenslinger said...

Pedroia hit intentionally? I was thinking yesterday that they almost had to retaliate.

mattymatty said...

"Mattymatty, because your typing that sentence affected the game? You are very powerful."

Ha ha! Yes, I guess I am.

mattymatty said...

What point is Sabathia trying to make by hitting Pedroia? "Hey, don't pitch really badly against my team!"?

allan said...

what is fox going to say the red sox's original nickname was in that trivia question?

it was proven several years ago that pilgrims and one other one were actually never used.

laura k said...

EXTRA MART!!!!!

allan said...

E

I

O

muthahfuckah!!!!!!!

Patrick said...

Eat shit!!!! That takes the sting off Pedey's butt.

laura k said...

"Ha ha! Yes, I guess I am."

Then get typing! :)

mattymatty said...

F U CC! VMart goes deep!!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Blue-light special drives in Big Mac

Patrick said...

V-Mart to Pedroia, "I got your back, meng!"

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Er....that doesn't work since FY was on base, nevermind

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Nice to have a lead

mattymatty said...

The great thing about the homers is it doesn't give our third base coach the opportunity to send someone to their death.

mattymatty said...

Dah... Mikey Doubles K's. Good inning though. Time for HH to set 'em down in order.

Patrick said...

Joe's talking about Nick Swisher's intangibles.

They're apparently immeasurable!!!

allan said...

his intangibles contain multitudes.

Joe Gravellese said...

1. F you, CC!

2. L - it is the type of work I want to do, working with local government on constituent casework, local issues, etc.; I want to do it here in Boston, but I have the chance to go do it in NYC and I may.

We'll be in touch.

3. F you, CC!

Joe Gravellese said...

hey guys, is anyone else concerned that we're just hitting too many gosh darned home runs?

mattymatty said...

Beltre is killing me this year. Just killing me.

mattymatty said...

How many of the Yankees runs are attributable to Beltre?

Zenslinger said...

I forgot this was on Fox! I can watch it without going to The Bar.

Announcer going on about how Winn is wasn't out. What is he smoking?

allan said...

totally tangible

mattymatty said...

Cap'n Intangibles grounds out with a runner on third to end the inning. Dude is clutch though.

mattymatty said...

Do you realize HH has 11 ground outs and 1 fly out?

Zenslinger said...

Giants at 4-4 in the 11th. Rays' Wade Davis had a tough 1st in Oakland...2-0.

allan said...

both pitchers at 67 thru 4.

SoSock said...

Dammit. Lost interwebs again. I think it's my wireless, Timmy's desktop, on the hardwire, hasn't given trouble. Tried rebooting, hopefully I'll be able to stay on.
??? Beltre??? Thought we got him mainly for his defense.

SoSock said...

Shit

Kathryn said...

Te-Shit

Kathryn said...

or is it Te-shit-ta?

mattymatty said...

HH definitely doesn't have his best stuff today.

mattymatty said...

4th BB for HH against 0 Ks.

SoSock said...

Saw an earlier commen about HH maybe being squeezed. 2nd pitch to A-hole looked like a strike on GDGD. Of course, that's just GDGD, not a live picture, but still.....

SoSock said...

Suck it up Clay

allan said...

mdc up

Kathryn said...

I don't think he is getting squeezed. He's missing by right much, some of them bouncing in.

mattymatty said...

First K for HH.

mattymatty said...

Biggest hit of the day: back up catcher and 8th place hitter Nobody McShitheal. You CAN'T give up a hit to that guy in that situation. Not good...

Joe Gravellese said...

:(

allan said...

OB: CC threw a lot of extra pitches in the third "when he decided to plunk Pedroia".

I assume OB cannot actually read minds, so that's pretty unprofessional. Not that he's any stranger to making up shit about players.

SoSock said...

2 for 1 special?

Joe Gravellese said...

oh no!

allan said...

YEAH! Call this bad boy -- only one strike before it is official!

Kathryn said...

Joe & Tim were going on an on about CC intentionally hitting Pedroia and that there was no way that Beckett's HBP were intentional last night.

allan said...

I think you still have to qualify it somehow. State it as your opinion, not as a concrete, known-to-the-world fact.

SoSock said...

So I'm thinking I might try to get in a little yard work. Any way this one is going to be resumed any time soon?

allan said...

SoSH says FOX said 40 minutes.

And two people said that McMoron compared CC to the Colossus of Rhodes! Sorry I missed that.

allan said...

we are back!

allan said...

Aceves in for NY

allan said...

CIDP!

laura k said...

I wonder if Amy & company stuck around.

allan said...

2 on and 2 outs for sox in 6th. aceves pitches to hermida and injures himself. looked like his left knee buckled in his follow-thru. he leaves the game, logan in

Joe Gravellese said...

I deem this game Clownshoes

The only way it gets weirder and delayed-er is when we see a bench-clearing brawl (I give it 3:1 odds)

laura k said...

Castig & Obie lamenting how NYY "can't catch a break" with all their injuries.

Boo hoo.

laura k said...

boo

laura k said...

7-3

allan said...

OMG - Rays lost.

laura k said...

Rays lost! Rays lost! Rays lost!

allan said...

And now RamRam hurts himself pitching and HE leaves the game. WTF?

allan said...

is that "against the unwritten rules", stealing up by 4 in the 7th?

Dr. Jeff said...

Is the game televised anywhere now? Not on fox or MLBXtra

allan said...

it's on fx something or other...

laura k said...

8-3

Kathryn said...

It's on FX

laura k said...

I just got an email from Zip asking if I want to reactive my account. They must be lurking in the thread.

Kathryn said...

I'm tired of losing to the MFY.

allan said...

Sox radio lead-in playing AC-DC's "If You Want Blood, You Got It" -- that's sounds like a good sign! RALLY TIME!

mattymatty said...

Good idea putting Schoeneweis, the last pitcher on the staff, in against the Yankees. Honestly, it should be Tito's job to keep that guy off the mound during the whole series.

That said, our pitching is back to sucking. There seems to be a pretty clear line. When our pitching is good, we win. When it isn't (like yesterday and today) we don't.

allan said...

dear sox: pls start hitting and scoring so ob and castig will SHUT THE FUCKING HOLY HELL UP ABOUT GODDAMN COLLEGE FUCKING FOOTBALL.

laura k said...

Big boos for the Hut.

laura k said...

...strand a pair...

drink

and keep drinking.

SoSock said...

Damn. Get in an hour or so of weeding, transplant a rose bush, and come back to this. Squanderage.
I'm gonna go buy some challah. Manana folks.

allan said...

bard is up

bad idea -- let schoeneweis finish this one, don't waste a useful arm

allan said...

... but bard it is.

laura k said...

9-3

ugh

allan said...

let's lose every game 10-3. FUN!

(that would mean stopping the mfy here, though)

mattymatty said...

That's it. I'm done for today.

laura k said...

12-3

laura k said...

Joe Grav has a point.

laura k said...

A, did you just hear OB? Does he think he can remember consecutive taken pitches for the last 20 years? Oy.

Joe Gravellese said...

i couldn't bear to watch any more. let me know if my bench-clearer prediction comes through.

Kathryn said...

The Fox guys are suggesting that somebody call Joe West to tell him how long this game is taking.

allan said...

VAN EVERY pitching

allan said...

A, did you just hear OB? Does he think he can remember consecutive taken pitches for the last 20 years? Oy.

Not listening.

He didn't even realize McDonald took 17 in a row in the game he had a stroke over JD taking 14!

allan said...

what did he say? that the 14 was the most he ever saw?

laura k said...

He did one of those "I've been doing MLB on radio since blah-blah-blah and I cannot remember ever seeing a player take 14 consecutive pitches..."

I mean seriously, does he think he would have counted and remembered such a thing?

****

I'm only still listening so I can keep headphones on and not have to listen to my co-worker.

laura k said...

I typed my answer before I saw your question.

laura k said...

*sigh*

14-3

sounds like a moon shot

Kathryn said...

Truly Teshitta

laura k said...

I hope Amy went home a long time ago.

allan said...

this comeback is gonna be awesome.

laura k said...

this comeback is gonna be awesome.

LOL

laura k said...

Thank dog that only counts as one loss.

Thank dog it's over!

SoSock said...

yuck

Amy said...

Well, that was fun for about the first hour. THEN it sucked. We stayed until 7, but then had dinner reservations we could not miss (never expected the game to run beyond FOUR hours). I am not sorry we left. When we left, the game still was within reach (9-3), sort of. By the time we had walked to the restaurant, it was out of reach. I drank two cosmos, had a great dinner, and forgot about baseball for a few hours. (Remember that I saw this game with two avid Yankee fans...)

I am not sure I can bring myself to watch tonight. One more Yankee blowout is more than I can handle.

Rob said...

Good thing it's only May, but are the trends of the season are beginning to show? I've skipped over the "panic" button and am pressing the "This Sucks" button right now.

However, the standings still look kind of wonky at this point.

Notable teams ahead of the Red Sox right now:

San Diego - 4.5 GA of Boston
San Francisco - 3.0 GA
Washington - 1.5 GA
Oakland - 1.0 GA
Cincinnati - 0.5 GA

Notable teams struggling:

Cubs - 1.0 GB of Boston
Angels - 1.5 GB
Dodgers - 1.5 GB
White Sox - 2.0 GB

Tough to be a baseball fan early this season in Los Angeles in Chicago, too.

Wonky, but still early. Or is it?

laura k said...

I've skipped over the "panic" button and am pressing the "This Sucks" button right now.

Me too.

allan said...

Doesn't the "this sucks" button come *before* the "panic" button?

What is the list and escalation of buttons?
