G33: Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6

Blue Jays - 040 020 000 - 6 8 2
Red Sox - 241 000 00x - 7 8 1
After Victor Martinez drove in two quick runs in the first -- Lewis had thrown only nine pitches -- Lackey allowed the first six batters to reach in the second. Then Boston sent ten men to the plate in the home half of the second, six of whom walked (including four of the first five and five of the first seven).

A two-run dong by Jose Bautista in the fifth brought Toronto to within one, but the Sox pitchers allowed only one baserunner after that. Lackey (6-8-6-3-6, 95) retired the next four, Hideki Okajima pitched a perfect seventh, Daniel Bard issued a one-out walk in the eighth, and Jonathan Papelbon kept the ball in the infield for a 1-2-3 ninth.

More good news: The Tigers beat the Yankees 5-4 and the Angels beat the Rays 5-4 in 11 innings.
Example
Brandon Morrow / John Lackey
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
McDonald, CF
Lackey has pitched seven innings in each of his last three starts, allowing 3, 3 and 1 runs. ... Boston is 2.5 GB the third-place Jays. Both teams are 12-8 over their last 20 games.

Buster Olney, in yesterday's ESPN Insider column: "I'd be stunned if Ortiz finishes the month on the Boston roster." I no longer subscribe to Insider, so I don't know if Olney offered any reason/anonymous source/etc. ... Flo is hitting .286/.333/.762 this month, with 3 taters.

Red Sox team totals, AL ranking among 14 teams:
Batting:
1st in H, 2nd in SLG, 3rd in RS & OBP, 4th in BB

Pitching:
14th in RA, 13th in HR, 12th in H, 10th in BB & WHIP
Mike Cameron begins a rehab assignment tonight as Pawtucket's DH. He will play center field tomorrow and meet with Sox staff on Wednesday.
My body feels good. It's been responding to back-to-back days of constant pounding. Other than like general soreness, I've got to let it go. ... I need to go see where I'm at ... I just have to be brutally honest with myself and brutally honest with the staff.
Adrian Beltre wore non-prescription glasses last night to protect his eyes from the cold (47 degrees) and wind (20 mph to RF).
My eyes are really sensitive, and every time it's windy, I can't see. ... It was the first time I've ever worn them. Ever. I've had them for many years ... but I never had the guts to use them ... I'll probably use them more often.
That's amazing. Never had the guts? I was initially embarrassed to wear my glasses to school back in 6th or 7th grade, but why would a 13-year MLB vet (who plays at the "hot corner") be hesitant to make sure his vision was not blurry during games? Is protecting your eyes against something as innocuous as wind unmanly?

Only two other AL games today: Yankees/Tigers and Rays/Angels.

Here is something that's a tad fucked up:

Laura asked a question on her blog recently (more musing "out loud" than anything) and someone from Citizenship and Immigration Canada called my work number and left a message answering her question. She had not contacted CIC in any way.

johngoldfine said...

Four-eyes, four-eyes! What a frippin wimp that Beltre is!

If I were his manager, I'd insist he wear them, so he could, like, make plays and maybe hit the ball....

johngoldfine said...

Those CIC guys--no flies on them, eh? Semper vigilis!

This is all that the Olney column mentioned regarding Ortiz. No sources are listed regarding Ortiz's status, it seems to just be based on personal opinion and reaction of others. If Flo keeps up the recent current pace (May), I don't think they'd cut him or move him. Here's hoping:

"Sox making tough front-office decisions easier

The Boston Red Sox are 1-8 against the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays, after getting blasted on Saturday, and now are seven games behind New York and 7½ behind Tampa Bay in the American League East. It's way too early to say that they are done, but they are certainly in deep, and the terrible start could make it easier to make some tough decisions. If David Ortiz were hitting under .200 and the Red Sox were hanging in the race, well, releasing him would be a tough call. Demoting Tim Wakefield into the bullpen would also be a tough call. But now GM Theo Epstein can act aggressively, and rightly, with an eye on the big picture -- 2011 and beyond.

In a weird way, Boston's problems are liberating for the Red Sox front office. Epstein can make moves, such as the pursuit of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Russell Martin, aimed to improve the Red Sox for now, but also to reconstruct the team for next year. Look, the Yankees took a step back in 2008, refusing to swap prospects in order to save what was a lost season, and keeping Phil Hughes turned out to be the smart play, and similarly, Boston should not overreact and spend resources on moves that will only help in 2010.

I'd be stunned if Ortiz finishes the month on the Boston roster.

Dan Shaughnessy calls mayday; The Red Sox are losing touch in the tough AL East, writes Scott Lauber; Ortiz's smile is no longer a sure thing, writes Harvey Araton."

it is amazing how Papi is a scapegoat and Beckett seems to get a free pass...

Papi maybe struggling at times, but Beckett just seemed to give up..

It seems as though his don't fuck with me attitiude could wear thin...Not that he is going anywhere but a little humility could go a long way.

allan said...

PA: Josh Beckett's next start will be on Friday in Detroit and not Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Tim Wakefield will start on Wednesday.

Lewis, LF
Hill, 2B
Lind, DH
Wells, CF
Overbay, 1B
Gonzalez, SS
Bautista, 3B
Buck, C
Snider, RF

That's spooky about the CIC guy, Allan. What did you say?

And I was in 7th grade when glasses were prescribed, and it took me until after college to admit that I needed to wear them all the time, not just to drive and watch TV. But I was not trying to play baseball.

I wondered what he meant by "unanswered" also.

feel free to repost your wells comment without the other stuff and i'll wipe it out

mattymatty said...

I like how Heidi is saying Morrow has "turned it on in his last four starts" just after Morrow airmails one to the backstop for ball four. Good stuff.

mattymatty said...

Is vertigo a long term problem? In other words, will Drew be out long term or is this a day to day kinda thing?

Amy said...

Nick, I have wondered about that and freezing yogurt. Thanks for saving me the trouble.

Zenslinger said...

The rare conditions that cause long-term vertigo make one's life pretty hellish. I'm sure Drew's problems are temporary.

Is the strike zone very small today or are both pitchers having some control issues?

swing the bats, you bums!!!!

nick said...

Yeah, Amy, it's a bit underwhelming. Not that I was expecting magic, but still. It's OK, just not great.

Ball 3...

When I was a kid, one of my dad's favorite desserts was frozen grape juice boxes.. you shave off the top. tasty stuffs.

Ball 4!

mattymatty said...

Eight total walks, five by Morrow, four in just this inning. Credit the Sox with taking some pitches.

Morrow has used 49 pitches to get four outs.

mattymatty said...

Amy - I think the strikezone isn't the issue. Both pitchers have had severe control problems in this inning.

nick said...

2 strikes. he might actually have to swing that lump of wood.

Amy said...

I was some RBIs here.

allan said...

Another gift from Aaron Hill on defense.

Nick, I was already cursing it.

mattymatty said...

yes.
yes, i do.

i cannot wait until we pass these shitheads in the standings. at least tampa and nyy are good teams.

My son and I are headed to Chicago in June. He is going to see MGMT in concert and I wouldn't let my 17 year old go to Chicago alone. "What could go wrong" he said. Anyway, I'm going to a Cubs game on a Friday afternoon. Any suggestions of where I should sit? I will be by myself.

nick said...

Morrow probably wondering why the hell they hadn't pulled him yet.

there they go.

Amy said...

What is the gap between Toronto and the Sox? 3 games still?

mattymatty said...

Big Papi!!

Gotta like the four run inning to answer the four run inning.

Kathryn said...

The bad news? Lackey gave up four in the top of the second.

The good news? Morrow is out of the game after 1.2 innings.

allan said...

Never ever called you a huge fag...may have talked shit about the Sox, never did that....

You are a lying, homophobic asshole.

Case closed.

mattymatty said...

Did they take Morrow out or did he just change his uniform?

nick said...

see... not you. I don't know who this Alan dude is.

allan said...

funny - once i mentioned the screen shot, he has not tried to post anything.

nick said...

We changed the channel during the commercial. Revenge of the Sith is on. I've never seen in. Holy moly the acting is bad! I walked out of Episode I after a few minutes of Jar-Jar Binks and couldn't take my memory of the original trilogy being tarnished anymore. This one isn't helping.

mattymatty said...

Nick - The acting and scripts in all of the pre-quels are just awful. I really wanted to like them, but I just couldn't.

Zenslinger said...

My, my. What wild stuff goes on while I'm walking home.

mattymatty said...

Hard to believe we have four hits but six runs.

mattymatty said...

The Jays are really trying to lose this one. We'd better take 'em up on it.

SoSock said...

Wow, 6 walks in an inning? Now an error to boot. These guys are not good are they?

mattymatty said...

SoSock said...

2 1/3 inngs in - 7 outs and 7 walks. Plus 2 errors. Oy

nick said...

Annakin was just emotionally expressing his turn to the dark side. Geez. The "Waiting for Guffman" community theater group would be better. Just shameful. I will relish the geekery of my youth. Go Tron!

Zenslinger said...

I think the problem with a lot of big-budget special-effects moviemaking is that they plan the set pieces out first. Then they try to fine tune character and story around that. The director and stars of the first Iron Man said so plainly. They said they had to go through many shooting iterations of the characters actually interacting until they got it right, but I don't think Lucas left room for that.

Plus, there's a reason he hadn't directed since Star Wars.

But fuck all that, I want more runs. Youk?

SoSock said...

I have to say - I think the 1st 3 Star Wars movies were every bit as good as the next 3 are bad. I liked them so much that I could watch the next 3 just to follow the story. Unfortunately they didn't even do a good job fo filling in the storyline. I couldn't sit through any of those 3 again. The 1st 3 however.....

SoSock said...

Per GDGD those looked like 3 good pitches to hit. Tis a shame he didn't

allan said...

we saw the jarjar movie in the midst of a hellacious blackout in our nyc neighborhood. after 2+ days of no electricity, the subways started working again.

we (we had two friends from london staying with us...) went down to the upper west side to see the movie, knowing the theater would be nice and chilly with AC. coming out of the subway i remember being surprised by the working traffic lights. they actually looked foreign!

the movie sucked, but the theater was cold -- and that was far far more important.

p.s. fuck con edison. fuck 'em hard.

allan said...

tabler might be the worst color guy around. first he says during a replay that hill hit yook running by him, then says yook landed funny on his right ankle.

no contact and he landed on his left foot.

however he did teach me tonight that the way a pitcher can go deep into a game is to throw as few pitches as possible as you go. be economical! he repeated it 3 times. i'll never forget it.

nick said...

desire for air conditioning will allow one to forgive (at least temporarily) many things.

9casey said...

Has anyone else noticed that Victor lobs the ball back to Lackey , but rifles it back to Lester.......And is the Beckett bump more of a Varitek thing or a Beckett thing?

SoSock said...

Wait - so to get my starting pitchers to last longer in the game, they just have to throw fewer pitches like each inning? That's all? Genius!
My Little League team might never lose another game

allan said...

i don't know why no one thought of it before. suck on that, bill james!

Zenslinger said...

"Is protecting your eyes against something as innocuous as wind unmanly?"

Well the wind is such a female thing you know, the cradle of life... But wait a minute! The wind is like a spear, a projected force - so it's a masculine symbol. So now I don't know what to say. 'He got cuckold by the wind, what a wimp'? Or, 'He got bitch slapped by the wind, what a man!' Standing up to the wind and all.

On Rogers Broadcast tonight Buck Martinez was pronouncing his name with an accent on it's french root, Bel-Tre. Buck is anal and as well studied as anyone, he never gets anything wrong. He likely talked to Adrian and got the pronunciation.

So... because of that the wind is definitely male and Beltre is therefore an effeminate 3B. Just like Stephen Colbert. :)

P.S. Wondering also in what century the first gay baseball player is going to 'come out' and why it hasn't happened already. MLB is worse than the friggin' army that way.

Also, I understand they don't grow up until *after* their careers are over - or their hair goes gray, then they *have* to.)
