G36: Red Sox 7, Tigers 2

Red Sox - 500 100 001 - 7 10 1
Tigers - 100 000 010 - 2 5 0
Marco Scutaro singled to start the game and Dustin Pedroia homered to left. After an out, Kevin Youkilis walked, J.D. Drew singled, and David Ortiz crushed a 450-foot three-run bomb to right center.

Ortiz led off the fourth with a solo home run to right. He struck out in last two at-bats.

Buchholz had a rough first inning (two walks and a single), but beginning with the third out in that inning, he retired 15 of 18 batters through the sixth. He walked two in the seventh and was pulled.

Bill Hall hit a pinch-hit dong in the ninth.

The Rays lost to Seattle 4-3, so Boston is again 5.5 GB. Tampa's magic number for eliminating us holds steady at 122. ... The Yankees beat the Twins 8-4.
Example
Clay Buchholz / Max Scherzer
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Ortiz, DH
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
McDonald, CF
Scherzer had a nice 2.62 ERA after four starts, but he has been horrible his last three times out: 13 innings, 27 hits, 21 runs, and an opponents OPS of 1.151. He began his career in Arizona in 2008, so he has never faced the Red Sox. Only Jeremy Hermida (1-for-3) and Bill Hall (2-for-3) have played against him.

Here is what current Tigers have done against Buchholz.

Tim Britton, MLB.com:
It's tough to argue against the idea that [Miguel] Cabrera has been the best hitter in the American League so far this season. He leads the league in average and RBIs and is second in on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Cabrera is also kicking everyone's ass in WPA, but Justin Morneau does have a higher OPS and more Runs Created.

B-Ref Stuff: Mat Latos nearly pitched a perfect game against the Giants. It was the Padres' eighth shutout of the season. ... The most productive spot in the Giants' order this year? #8?!? (Boston's #8 spot is 4th best.)

Patrick said...

hahah! at least we're not DETROIT!

laura k said...

Did we really give up on Ortiz? Or were we just really sad and frustrated? We didn't boo him (presumably no one here did), we didn't turn on him, we just kept wishing and hoping. Right?

Patrick said...

I hear ya on the cautious HR call. I feel like Castig is the best at letting you know it could go out, but it's no guarantee.

laura k said...

I was amazed that Moore picked that up in his last movie. Imagine making a YouTube vid and Michael Moore wants to use it. Pretty cool.

laura k said...

And I'm such a sucker, I get truped every time!

Zenslinger said...

I felt that he was probably done. I wouldn't boo him for anything short of threat of pain & death.

laura k said...

I think that's fair. And who knows, he might be done. We can only hope.

Zenslinger said...

Toronto roars right back. It's 3-3.

But, on the positive side, Burnett's in trouble again. Bases loaded, no outs against him...

...and he walks in a run! 1-0 MIN.

HH - keep this shit in check please. And I agree re Papi. I think he's getting ready to turn in at least a good year, tho probably not great. But the years will probably be trending down now. Of course a good year for him is a career year for some so I'll take it.
Later!
And as I type he says "not great, huh? I'll show you!"

Still here. Not really feeling the whole "going out" thing just yet. Maybe later. Meanwhile, there's beer in the fridge and a Red Sox game to follow. Why leave home?

I am under the impression that a prolonged silent treatment doesn't actually teach anything - that the punishment has to happen immediately or the dog doesn't connect it to the event. I guess you disagree?

laura k said...

A, why did you post Remy's stats? I don't have NESN tonight.

Kathryn said...

Meunier was talking about how big the park is in Detroit. We saw the Sox play there in 2003. (I think it had just opened). They hit a ton of balls to the warning track. I remember thinking that they had to go out eventually, but none did. They lost 3-0.

johngoldfine said...

I agree that the punishment has to happen immediately for it to mean anything.

Oddly, it's not the same with rewards, at least with clicker-trained dogs. The click is a bridge, and after I give it, I can go into the kitchen to get the treat while the dog waits for what it knows is coming, patient with the delay between behavior and reward.

I'd have rolled them over and screamed at them right then on the road, if I could have, but there were five dogs, two humans, a stranger and a strange dog, and a bunch of yahoos in cars zipping by. We just wanted them safe on the porch.

Ignoring them is not a punishment for going on the road; it's just a part of being boss.

Watch a low status dog come in the house, waggging, licking, half-crouching. The boss dog gives a wag and then majestically turns away, suggesting by his posture that he has far more important things to do than deal with a pup.

That is our message, and the point of cutting off normal dog-human intercourse.

The boss says where you go and when, who leaves the house first, what order dogs get fed in (we don't feed simultaneously), and in extreme circumstances, what pack order will be maintained on the trail.

It sounds like warmed-over fascism, I know, but it does work to keep everyone secure and safe, to allow great dog freedom, and to make unusual communication possible.

laura k said...

Sweaty half dong!

Kathryn said...

John, you sound like Cesar Millan. Impressive.

laura k said...

No no, doesn't sound like fascism to me, I totally get the hierarchical thing, the pack mentality, the need for structure and status. I learned the hard way, letting a German Shepherd take over my life and spending the rest of her life reasserting myself.

So I get that. And you say you agree on the punishment and reward, and I know how the clicker works, all cool.

The silent treatment I don't get, but I know how much you love and respect your dogs, so I defer to you on that.

It may also strike a negative chord with me because my father used to give us kids prolonged silent treatment. In his case, it was fascism, and the only thing it taught us was that he was an asshole!

I don't know how you can ignore your dogs for that long anyway. You are made of stronger stuff than me.

****

Wow, Bruins lost. Wow.

laura k said...

He sounds much better than Cesar Milan. But I'm not a fan of Milan's at all.

meunier said...

laura k said...

Oh man, what was that Bard?

meunier said...

Blame that on the flying bat

meunier said...

Yes, one Boston team did make the conference finals so I guess I can't be totally an ingrate.

laura k said...

I think he goes for short-term results that work for a show, but don't teach you long-term how to work with your dog.

I do agree that most dogs need a lot more exercise and stimulation, he's good on that.

A-Rod GS

meunier said...

I have to say the DET announcers are one of the few away announcers I like.

laura k said...

They're good when Detroit is losing. As soon as the Tigers do something good, they totally lose it.

meunier said...

When/how did Sizemore get to Detroit?

johngoldfine said...

They're most of them cooped in bed with Mrs GF at this point, so I guess the silence has ended.

Ignoring them is my way of reminding them that what I want is what has to happen, and they better pay attention to my wishes--in this case, my wish that they never approach the road. Ignoring them helps re-enlist their attention.

We did another trick too, which was to each eat a cracker or two after their food was prepped to cool their afterburners.

All that New Skete stuff about getting physical with dogs is abominable, but they do have to have a sense of their limits.

allan said...

diff sizemore.

laura k said...

You know that's not Grady Sizemore, right?

allan said...

bard must be trying to get a save situation for bot

That helps. Thanks Detroit.

johngoldfine said...

Working with horses is completely different. Silent treatment means nothing to them, and good luck rolling them over. Shouting is a serious mistake as is any kind of temper display or physical punishment (which is not quite the same as physical reaction--my new horse thinks she can stick her nose in my face. In the horse world that's fairly aggressive so she is not surprised or upset when she discovers my forehead knocking her nose. It only takes once to give her a clue and then a second time for her to proof it, see if the first time was an accident. Then that ends that.)

But they will do anything--anything! for a treat the size of a fingernail.

Anything!

Dr. Jeff said...

OK, who's your least favorite announcer: My vote: Buck Martinez. 2nd place: Tie between Joe Morgan/Rick Sutcliffe. Who am I missing?

Dr. Jeff said...

Aren't the white sox announcers among the most partisan of all? Or am I thinking about the Braves?

OMG I forgot about Kay.

But no, he isn't as bad as Sutcliffe, McCarver or Buck Martinez, IMO.

Yes, White Sox. "Put it on the board yes"

I then posted this comment -
I had no problem with the snake being in the back of the truck, really. He's been there 2 days now. But when he showed up face to face about 12 inches from my nose while I'm doing 70 down the highway, I decided it was time to contain him. He never did threaten me though.
