G43: Phillies 5, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 100 000 000 - 1 4 0
Phillies - 000 221 00x - 5 9 0
Victor Martinez hit a solo home run in the first, but Boston managed next to nothing after that off Hamels (7-3-1-1-8, 116). The Red Sox did not get a runner past second base until they were down to their last out in the ninth. With the bases loaded against J.C. Romero, pinch-hitter David Ortiz flew out to Shane Victorino on the warning track in center.

Lackey (5-6-4-5-3, 107) never settled into a groove. He walked two and allowed a double in the first three innings, throwing 55 pitches. Ryan Howard homered to start the fourth and a double from Jayson Werth and Victorino's single gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Werth's two-run dong in the fifth made it 4-1 and Howard added an RBI single in the sixth.

The Rays lost to the Astros 2-1. The Yankees beat the Mets 2-1; Mariano Rivera allowed a run in the ninth on back-to-back two-out doubles, the fifth run he's allowed in his last three appearances (2.1 innings).

The Diamondbacks have a 7-3 lead over the Blue Jays in the 7th.
Example
John Lackey / Cole Hamels
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Martinez, C
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hall, LF
McDonald, CF
Lackey, P
The Phillies are 25-15 (and 12-5 in May) and are 4 GA of the Marlins in the NL East. Hamels had a 5.28 ERA in five April starts, but has done better in May: 3 starts, 2.75.

In terms of aggregate weighted 2010-to-date winning percentage of opponents, which AL team has the toughest interleague schedule? The Red Sox. The Rays and Yankees are 10th and 11th, respectively. Since I already think interleague games should be abolished, this just pisses me off.

Also:
Yankees at Mets, 7 PM
Rays at Astros, 8 PM
Blue Jays at Diamondbacks, 9:30 PM
Example
May 21 in Baseball History

1904: Boston Americans shortstop Bill O'Neill makes six errors in a game against the Browns, including three in the first inning on the first three balls hit to him. He blames snakes.

1957: Boston baseball writers reaffirm their ban on women in the press box and refuse to allow Doris O'Donnell, a Cleveland feature writer traveling with the Spiders, to sit in the Fenway Park press area.

That's funny. We get the best team in the NL and the Rays get the worst. Oh, Uncle Bud, you're such a joker with this inter-league garbage.

yes x 1,000,000

I just looked at this, against my better judgement. Was glad to see at least a few people say, "You never miss an opp'y to bash Manny".

WTF is wrong with these ppl.

Don't answer that.

I added this to the main post. In terms of aggregate weighted 2010-to-date winning percentage of opponents, the Red Sox have the toughest interleague schedule among AL teams. The Rays are 10th and the Yankees are 11th -- so they have some of the most easy schedules.

9casey said...

I glared at out lineup for 30 sec, wondering why no Dh....DUHHHHHHHH!!!!!

9casey said...

I didn't add it last night, but watching Jon Lester , pitch last night was amazing , the speed in which he worked was mindblowing. He was so efficent and so in command of that game..

Patrick said...

I like Werth. I wouldn't mind seeing him replace Drew in two.

laura k said...

I hate interleague for about 10 different reasons, but we shouldn't whine about the schedule. Baseball is not out to get us.

Patrick said...

I'm really gonna hate hearing joe and OB bullshit about players they don't know anything about.

allan said...

Werth is already 31, so I don't know ...

allan said...

I'm really gonna hate hearing joe and OB bullshit about players they don't know anything about

And this is different from the other 161 games ...?

allan said...

I'm sure OB feels right at home in Philly -- basking in the Drew hate.

allan said...

No one is out to get us.

The inequality is what annoys me.

allan said...

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL IN PHILLY.

Patrick said...

V-Mart SPECIAL!!!!

laura k said...

Extra Mart strikes early!

Zenslinger said...

Hot Items -- at V-Mart!

laura k said...

Lots of Sox fans there.

And I have NESN tonight. Yay.

Patrick said...

Yeah, I checked Werth's age after I said that. Not feeling as strongly about it.

laura k said...

No one is out to get us.

The inequality is what annoys me.

Inequality is frustrating. But Red Sox fans do seem to think baseball, or maybe the whole world, is out to get them.

allan said...

I was surprised at his age too. He's hitting like a beast this year.

allan said...

It should say no one is out to get us with the interleague schedule. (Probably.) There are other matters, however...

Zenslinger said...

PHI 1-5 all over .300 BA. Impressive.

allan said...

GDGD has the 2nd batter batting and mlbtv is stil in commercial.

allan said...

MLBTV WAS SHOWING A FUCKING FASHION TV STATION AD FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW AND MISSED 5 PITCHES.

laura k said...

5 pitches? Geez, even NESN doesn't do that.

allan said...

i think it was called something like "shine". kim kardashian was talking in it.

laura k said...

It's funny how my feelings for the Mets endure. I just can't stop hating them.

It's Rich "Sha" Dubee!

Lord Lynch said...

Hello all. Lovely to be with you from the west side of the pond!

allan said...

It never gets old.

allan said...

MFY - 0
NYM - 0

laura k said...

Hi Lord, nice to see you here.

laura k said...

I wish that ad didn't have that bigot from Gino's Steaks in it. Should be Pat's Steaks. All the fame and taste with none of the racism.

laura k said...

Mets v Yankees. Can they both lose?

I know how NYY fans feel about being beaten by the Mets, the humiliation, so I guess I want the Mets.

But it hurts to say that! :)

Lord Lynch said...

Lovely to be by the Shore. Don't get beaches like this in London town. And then I come back to base and we have the game on TV. Shame I didn't get tickets!

allan said...

LL: Where exactly are you?

Lord Lynch said...

Cape May. I know I could go through Stubhub, but I am comforted by the fact I get my first Sox game in two weeks in Baltimore. Only got so much cash!

allan said...

It'll be nice having you here for more than 10 minutes.

laura k said...

Cape May is beautiful. The park is Baltimore is beautiful too, but bring your earplugs, the sound is brutal.

How long are you in the US for?

Lord Lynch said...

At least until the wife wants her laptop back!

I've tried to work out the pitcher I will see and I think it is Lackey. Given his displays thus far, I am the lucky one! One spot after Lester.

Lord Lynch said...

Here for three weeks, and we are heading down to the Blue Ridge Parkway for a week, ending up at Camden Yards - I have been there before. It was superb. Hope to see the Nationals new park the night before, but we are not decided.

Lord Lynch said...

Don't walk the pitcher. Lord....

Kathryn said...

I've got the Phillies broadcast, but it's sycnched up pretty well with WEEI.

Whew!

laura k said...

The new Houdini?

Patrick said...

Really? Lackey, really?

laura k said...

That sounds nice, LL. Is your BH USian?

laura k said...

If you haven't been, the Babe Ruth Museum is nice for a visit. It's right near Camden Yards.

Kathryn said...

Lord, where are you traveling along the parkway? That's close to my neck of the woods in Virginia.

Lord Lynch said...

Slow, L. My better half (I presume that's what BH means) is American and we got married here 18 months ago.

allan said...

mlbtv misses the entire mcdonald AB. and they were not showing any commercial. just did not come back.

allan said...

so that is another 5 pitches missed.

laura k said...

Congratulations! When you said "wife" I thought, I didn't think he was married... So I remembered correctly.

Yes, BH = better half. But since you're Brit, I can say partner with no worries. :)

Lord Lynch said...

Asheville, then a stop where the mood takes us, and then up to DC area on Saturday. Hope to see the Salem Red Sox one night.

laura k said...

You'd think MLB TV would be able to SHOW THE BASEBALL GAME.

Amy said...

Evening, all. Hi, Lord! So you are on this side of the Atlantic? In our time zone!

Patrick said...

I live in Asheville in the winter. I'll be back there in October.

laura k said...

I haven't been to Asheville. I hear it's great.

Lord Lynch said...

My annual visit Amy. Pity last year's was in November! The shame for me is I booked this in January and my soccer team were nowhere in the league. Next Saturday we play at the new Wembley in a game that if we win, we get promoted. Like my team's Superbowl....

Lord Lynch said...

I really feel like I should be going to bed now. This is odd! It's still light out...

laura k said...

What a nice person, saying "soccer" to avoid confusion. :)

Lord Lynch said...

Saw the Phillies yesterday on TV against the Cubs. They had Contreras closing. Oh what could have been, eh?

allan said...

I'm very curious how much more of the game they will be denying their customers.

There has been 103 pitches so far, so they have failed to show about 10% of the game.

Lord Lynch said...

Phillies announcer just said our Fenway sell out streak "may end soon". Do they know something I don't?

allan said...

DREW!

laura k said...

We're having some nice OF defense tonight. (And we need it.)

Kathryn said...

LL-you'll be driving right past me. We are about 100 miles northeast of Salem. I hope you have nice weather and beautiful scenery.

A-mlbtv has been doing this a lot. It's almost like they forget to come back to the game.

allan said...

i get the feeling not all the games have actually sold out.

laura k said...

Re MLB TV, I wonder if fans are complaining. They really should be.

allan said...

sosh on the sellout stuff.

Amy said...

Not all the games at Fenway have not sold out? Wow. Drop in the rankings and people no longer want to see the games. What a shame.

Kathryn said...

Concerning the sell out streak, there was an article in the Globe a few weeks back. They define a sell out as paid + complimentary tix = capacity. I think they said they will be fine until Sept, but may be a little worried if the Sox are out of it once school is back in session.

allan said...

MFY - 000
NYM - 000

Amy said...

Boy, I just re-read my comment. Too many "nots." Must be sleepy.

laura k said...

Times are tough, tickets are expensive. Most people are less likely to buy tix when a team isn't winning as much. Sox fans are no different. (Blasphemy, I know.)

Amy said...

Sox fans are just like everyone else? How dare you! :)

Kathryn said...

Globe Story

allan said...

that globe story is mentioned/ quoted in that thread link.

i don't much care if they have 5 or 10 or 300 tix unsold for a game.

Lord Lynch said...

I did the Fenway tour in 2007 in June and you could get tickets for September games then, I am sure. That was a WS year. I'm sure they knew they'd sell out - maybe it is the fear over this season with the Rays smashing all in sight.

Then again, I've never had problems getting Phillies tix on my previous visits here, but the game I had lined up, a Monday game against the Padres is "sold out".

laura k said...

Sox fans are just like everyone else? How dare you! :)

That's my story and I'm sticking with it. :)

Lord Lynch said...

That missed, Hamels. (He says not checking GDGD)

laura k said...

Plus as I've said here before, I don't get the whole emphasis on attendance. I don't know why we should care.

allan said...

Sox fans are just like everyone else? How dare you! :)

good thing jere is not here.

Lord Lynch said...

Where's Mr Chinstrap tonight? (Hermida)

allan said...

also, since the streak is so long, it forces the sox to be creative if they have to to keep it going

allan said...

god - and mlbtv quickly turns off at the end of the inning before nesn goes to commercial; don had said about 3-4 words of his outro.

laura k said...

good thing jere is not here.

no comment.

allan said...

no hermida vs the lefty.

laura k said...

crap!

allan said...

well, they let me see that one.

Lord Lynch said...

Did mlb tv get back in time for that, redsock?

meunier said...

CSN guy said "pitcher's duel" right before the Howard dong.

allan said...

that reminds me of when nesn was always trying to squeeze in an extra commercial and would miss pitches. they came back to the game and someone (nomar?) had hit the first pitch over the wall and was rounding second base in his trot. ...

allan said...

werth gets the bad news.

laura k said...

"gets the bad news"

DRINK!

Lord Lynch said...

As we say down my way.. what a jakki brambles.

laura k said...

And NESN stopped doing that - because fans complained. (At least they stopped doing it regularly.)

Fans have to complain about MLB TV, too.

Kathryn said...

So, on the Phillies broadcast they were escorting the guy who caught (CRAP on the Drew muff) the home run ball up the stairs. I turned the sound on to find out that if you catch a home run ball there, you get it signed. I assume it's signed by the hitter. Pretty cool.

allan said...

Fans have to complain about MLB TV, too.

I will do that.

meunier said...

Drew lost the ball in the sunset

laura k said...

That is cool. I hope no one gets stomped on trying to get one.

laura k said...

That's a nice park in Philly. They had a huge change in parks, almost as dramatic as Seattle's. The Vet was really hideous.

Oh shit, 2-1. Bah.

allan said...

they are taking him to get it signed right away?

Lord Lynch said...

It's very small though L.

Just read a Shaughnessy article on Boston.com that was the usual load of old negativity. For many reasons I've not been able to follow the Sox as much this season, but is it really that unbearable there?

Kathryn said...

I think more teams should do that with the home run balls. That's a nice thing for the fans. I went back and listened to the commentary. They can get that ball signed by the hitter. It is signed at another time and sent to the person.

laura k said...

Small as in hitter-friendly?

allan said...

unbearable only if you pay attention to it.

Lord Lynch said...

Yep. Left field looked very short to me.

laura k said...

LL, you know better than to listen to CHB.

I don't know if it's unbearable there, but the Sox are very middling so far this year. For those who care only about winnings and standings, the season seems to be a wash-out.

For the rest of us, there's a lot to be interested in, but 2007 it ain't.

allan said...

rays up 1-0 (of course) in the 2nd

laura k said...

Yep. Left field looked very short to me.

I'm sure you're right. I was thinking only from a fan's perspective. Huge improvement.

laura k said...

Lackey. Lackey Lackey Lackey.

allan said...

yeah, lucky you, you'll see lackey....

i have no idea what the sports radio is like. and i avoid chb and the herald hacks 95% of the time. but i assume that i would be highly annoyed if i exposed myself to it.

laura k said...

Amy, get ready to say WHO? :)

Lord Lynch said...

It is a lovely stadium, L. I love everywhere I've been sports-wise because it shames the nonsense I have put up with for years in English sports venues.

Patrick said...

OK, good, runs please!

allan said...

Javy has a no-hitter thru 4 vs the Stems!

laura k said...

Interesting, LL. I can only wonder what you mean.

allan said...

only missed 3 pitches (and one out) that time.

laura k said...

Wow they suck!!

allan said...

i want a partial refund for this game.

Kathryn said...

Crap Lackey. What are you doing???!!

allan said...

for an old fart, he can still hit .....

allan said...

was lackey yelling at himself or at martinez?

laura k said...

I want a full refund for this whole season. :/

laura k said...

I didn't see yellling. I hope at himself!

Kathryn said...

Well, at least the bullpen is rested.

But, c'mon Lackey!

Kathryn said...

Lackey has thrown more pitches through 4.2 than Lester did the entire game.

allan said...

i guess if it was at victor, i assume that martinez or farrell would have paid him a visit.

allan said...

and he has faced only 6 fewer batters

Kathryn said...

I was amazed to read that Lester has the highest winning percentage of any pitcher (EVER) to havge pitched at least 100 games.

laura k said...

Hi LBJ!

laura k said...

Lester is great, but winning percentage doesn't mean anything.

allan said...

it means something -- i assume that most if not all of the pitchers on that list are not shitty -- but it is well down the list on what to look at to see if he's effective.

or so says dice's 18-3 record in 2008

Kathryn said...

Yea I know there are a lot of other factors that go into winning percentage, but that is still a nice feat. You have to be good to be in the mix. Lester gave a lot of credit to the teams for his wins.

Lord Lynch said...

signing off for now. Here's to a comeback...

laura k said...

Yes, an exaggeration to say it doesn't mean anything. But it doesn't tell you much about how a pitcher is doing, is all I meant.

laura k said...

*sigh*

allan said...

FKR - 100

allan said...

came in in mid-delivery on the first pitch there.

laura k said...

Gotta leave the thread for the night. Hopefully I can listen to LBJ's return tomorrow from work.

allan said...

naturally, the home depot commercial is in the way of the replay.

allan said...

heh - remy saying it's interesting that vazquez finally has a good start and, how about that, it's against an NL team ...

allan said...

Fangraphs has us at 1.6% chance to start the 9th.

allan said...

two on -- keep going.

allan said...

it's a shame that drew will make it only 5-4 and not tie it when he dongs off romero.

Rob said...

I know, right? Asshole.

allan said...

i mean he could really stick it up the ass of these fans ...

though, yeah, if he was a real man, he'd hit a 5-run home run and give us a lead.

allan said...

TIZZLE TIME!

Rob said...

Have a seat, Bill Hall. Let the big man take care of things.

allan said...

"way back in the day"

boooooooooo, don!
