G49: Royals 4, Red Sox 3

Royals - 000 031 000 - 4 4 0
Red Sox - 000 111 000 - 3 9 0
Matsuzaka: 4.2-2-3-8-1, 112. Yeah, 8 walks.

Dice worked out of a bases loaded/no out jam in the top of the fourth -- which was pretty remarkable as the first two outs were soft line drives to Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia -- and Adrian Beltre knocked in Youkilis in the bottom half and Boston led 1-0.

But then Matsuzaka totally lost it in the fifth, throwing 42 pitches and walking five batters, including one with the bases loaded.

After Bannister (6-9-3-0-4, 104) left, the KC pen shut down the Sox. Rob Tejada, Blake Wood, and Joakim Soria each pitched a 1-2-3 inning.

J.D. Drew had three singles, Bill Hall homered in the fifth, and Jason Varitek had an RBI double. Manny Delcarmen pitched two innings, retiring six batters on 21 pitches.

The Rays beat the White Sox 5-1 and the Twins beat the Yankees 8-2, so Tampa leads New York by 4.5 and Boston and Toronto are both 6.5 GB.
Example
Brian Bannister / Daisuke Matsuzaka
Scutaro, SS
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 1B
Drew, RF
Beltre, 3B
Hermida, LF
Varitek, C
Hall, CF
Example
White Sox/Rays at 7
Yankees/Twins at 8

So how was the test? Have you been out celebrating??

allan said...

Actually, we had to race home! I'll explain in a bit.

meunier said...

David Ortiz may be berevement listed by Francona for Friday and/or Saturday in order for him to attend Jose Lima's services.

Amy said...

Yes, I was beginning to worry whether you guys were okay when there was no oatmeal at 6:56!

allan said...

There was a LOT of waiting.

allan said...

Cocksuckers gave me FOX.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Amy said...

Lots of other new Canadians or more like a general bureaucratic dysfunction?

allan said...

BUT JAYS ARE OFF -- AND ROGERS COMES THRU WITH NESN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

allan said...

running around, turning on laptop, filling in lineups, etc., gotta feed dogs btw innings!

thunder is freaking cody out too

Amy said...

I probably shouldn't be watching this game. DiceK does much better without me.

tim said...

Slingboxin' it tonight which means no threading, computer will be tied up on fullscreen game.

Enjoy this one. Let's hope for another one, just like the other one, from Dice.

Zenslinger said...

Ortiz is in there. Lima's body was delayed in LA and will be in NY tomorrow, I read. Somewhere.

Amy said...

Bye, Tim. Someday you need explain what you just said. Slingboxing? I have heard of it, but not sure what it means, how it works, etc.

Enjoy the game on your slingbox!

Amy said...

Looks like I should turn off the game. Walks the leadoff man....

tim said...

Just watching the game on my computer via my slingbox, which is hooked up to the Directv receiver at my dad's place. Basically the computer is a TV that you can log into from anywhere (with internet) and watch your TV back home....if that makes sense.

Appt was at 4, and we lined up and they checked us in, then we waited until someone called us up to ask a few Q and check our info. The woman we spoke with was in no hurry and chit-chatted a bit. After that, we were each given a card like a lotto form where you fill in bubbles for the correct answers. And we went into a big room and sat down. It was about 4:20.

The intro to the test and the actual came after 6:00! UGH. Really took the excitement out of the experience. I was a yawning machine.

20 multiple choice questions - needed to get 15 right (not 12). also there were 2 questions that absolutely had to be correct and then a group of 3 where we had to get at least 1.

we had 30 minutes to do the test, but we finished in maybe 10 or 15. we got out to the car at maybe 6:30. so instead of a pub, we grabbed something quick on the way home.

laura is 100% sure she passed, i am 98%. i would still like to know for sure. they said we would get a letter in the next 2 months .....

meunier said...

Last night someone on the barstool sports site posted a picture of Evan Longoria's (alleged) meat dong.

Zenslinger said...

they said we would get a letter in the next 2 months .....

Gimme a break! Don't kids get nearly instant results on their college-entrance exams and stuff these days?

allan said...

tekballa

tim said...

2 months is fucking ridiculous. no reason at all for it. it takes what, 2 seconds to run a card through a scantron machine?

not to mention the thousands of dollars that probably get paid out to the plugs involved in the "two month" process.

allan said...

they could have a machine like they have to read lotto cards and if you passed, they say, "you passed, you will get a letter saying when the swearing in will be shortly".

if the person failed, they could say, "okay, your test is in the system, and we will let you know." (to avoid people freaking out if you told them they failed)

we took the test -- it's done -- but it feels like nothing happened.

tim said...

I will actually leave this thread at some point, as per post 1 (by me).

Amy said...

WTF? You sat and waited for over an hour and a half for a thirty minute test? Must be all that socialism you got up there in the frozen north. :)

And it sort of figures that Laura would be more optimistic than you are, though 98% is pretty upbeat for Oscar.

tim said...

Ryan from "The Office" in the stands, looks blitzed.

Zenslinger said...

Did they ask any questions about Rush?

Amy said...

Tim, thanks for the explanation. Not sure it helps much, but I appreciate the effort. I will go look it up on the internet.

tim said...

Reasons for sitting there for an hour and a half: The test proctor was probably at said pub, enjoying a few pints and dinner.

meunier said...

Any more news on what is wrong with LBJ?

allan said...

they should have had the first 20 of us take the test, then the next 20, in waves. getting their first/early means nothing. we could have rolled in two hours "late" and have been right on time.

laura will likely have more on wmtc.

allan said...

my test had nothing on rush. or april wine.

they have maybe 5-6 versions and they mix them up and pass them out, so the person a few seats over probably has a different set of Qs.

allan said...

I do like to rock, however.

allan said...

west: "sorry, david, your AB was taking too long. gotta move the game along."

meunier said...

Did Ortiz just get tossed?

Zenslinger said...

Strike three to Papi outside on GDGD, but not, y'know, way outside.

Rush is one of those bands: if someone tells me they absolutely hate them, I have no real argument. But I love them. I don't listen to them consistently -- I go through little phases. But I grew up on them. Seeing them in August.

Kathryn said...

OTT

7 pitches!

Amy said...

How many of you were taking this test today? Is everyone moving to Canada???

allan said...

maybe 40 people.

allan said...

was millar on the pre-game?

Amy said...

40. I had visions of hundreds coming in all day, 20 at a time.

I did not see the pre-game show.

Kathryn said...

I'm a little frustrated. We are going to the Dodgers game on 6/20. It is not sold out, but I can't buy tickets to the game from the Red Sox. They only include them with a double pack. You have to buy tix to an upcoming A's game to be able to get Dodgers tix. So, instead of getting tix straight from the Red Sox, I have to go to the secondary market...for a game that is not sold out. Grrr.

Zenslinger said...

Prices are jacked up for the Sox games in San Francisco -- they fluctuate with demand -- so I feel your pain, Mrs.

I'd better get down to the Bar. I will toast your citizenship.

Amy said...

Tek beats it...wow.

Kathryn said...

Looked safe to me.

Amy said...

Ump probably assumed Tek could never make it.

allan said...

dp pls

Kathryn said...

tp, please?

allan said...

thanks for not getting out of the way asshole.

Amy said...

Why do I always get THIS DiceK?

Kathryn said...

YOUK...I thought that was getting through.

Now, dp please

allan said...

still 0-0, amy

Kathryn said...

It's the curse Amy.

Amy said...

Houdini DiceK

Kathryn said...

Houdini...amazing.

allan said...

dice-k being dice-k

it's his game -- we all just play and watch it.

Kathryn said...

a little luck there

Pepe Lepew said...

Did you pass your test?

Quick, what's the capital of Nunavut?

Amy said...

Beltre! Hot!

Kathryn said...

Beltre the belter!

meunier said...

Beltre is HAWT

allan said...

"cleans it out"

DRINK

allan said...

we are very confident we passed.

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Beltre is on fire! (He's not ON FIRE though, duh)

Kathryn said...

Remy: You just can't be Houdini all night!

Amy said...

Heh, Jerry just took the words out of my mouth: "YOu just can't be Houdini all night." I thought only WE called him that!

Amy said...

I still hate watching Dice K pitch. I think you all are lying about his last outing.

meunier said...

Oh come on this is ridiculous

allan said...

i think his last start was all a dream, too.

Kathryn said...

7 walks? Get a grip Dice.

Amy said...

It is no longer 0-0.

Dr. Jeff said...

Hook.

Amy said...

Uch. That's it. I am never watching him pitch again.

Kathryn said...

109 pitches in the 5th.

long wait for bannister

that might be good....

Pepe Lepew said...

I think Dice-K left his control in the capital of Nunavut...

Dr. Jeff said...

HOOK.

allan said...

what a shitshow

Kathryn said...

OMG. 5 walks in this inning! Goodbye Dice.

Amy said...

OK, pitching change. Good or bad? At least the pen is rested.

Amy said...

Now how hard was that? DiceK, you suck.

nick said...

5BB in one inning? ouch. Least it extends the game so I might be able to watch some at home in half an hour.

I refuse to accept sweeping the Rays to be defeated by the Royals.

Anyone remember those candies called Royals? vaguely remember them from when I was in 2nd grade (early '80s). Like minty M&Ms.

allan said...

2 hits in 5 innings -- what's wrong with that?

allan said...

HALL DONG

Amy said...

Hall hits it out of the hall!

allan said...

31 minute wait for bannister -- and hall goes deep.

nick said...

Ha. apparently they were Canadian. some link.

nick said...

coming back (in the game). I'll be back round in a while.

8-3 upon my return.

Kathryn said...

Nick, 2nd grade in the early 80's?

That's a bit after my time.

Amy said...

LOL, Mrs. G. In the early 80s, I had young kids!

Edward Lee said...

Somebody who knows more about Star Trek than me has to come up with a name for Joe Nelson's splitter.

Benjamin said...

Hope you did better on the citizenship test than West is doing umping.

allan said...

nice way to play the carom, hermida. christ

SoSock said...

Young kids in the 80s?
I'm just gonna sulk.
So maybe we can start getting 2 good starts out of every 3 from Dice. Would that be pushing our luck?

allan said...

i could fill in the answers without seeing the questions and do better than west

nick said...

Well, that's not exactly the score I was expecting.

nick said...

werd elgnis!

allan said...

if drew cared, he'd be 5-for-3.

nick said...

That pretty much how West does it too, RS.

Benjamin said...

Were you wearing the Wood Hood (tm) when you took the test?

SoSock said...

If Drew really cared he'd have swung at the 1st pitch and scored from 1st on the ensuing sac fly by Belter

Amy said...

Belter for Beltre---sort of the reverse Canadian spelling AND descriptive of his hitting recently!

Kathryn said...

TEK!!

Amy said...

TEK!! I STILL LOVE YOU!

Amy said...

Why are you sulking about having young kids in the 80s, SoSock? Weren't yours also born in that decade?

SoSock said...

J-Bay just hit an rbi double to give the Mets a 1-0 lead over Philly. Why can't we get.......nevermind.

FKR up 5-1 now, bottom 8th. Twinkies still winning 3-1 at the Toilet.3

TEK-MAN! Coming back (team and individual) :)

SoSock said...

You're right Amy. I spoke too soon. Realized that mine were actually young still in the early 80s. Born in 78 and 81. The daughter we adopted later was born in 74. So I should have just deleted that comment. When I think 80s I think later in the decade, and mine weren't so young then.

Amy said...

Mine were born in 1980 and 1984, so they are just a bit younger than yours. You met my younger daughter last summer at JOS1---hard to believe she will be 26!

SoSock said...

OTT for MDC!

allan said...

millared it

SoSock said...

Amy, I do remember meeting her now. Lovely young lady. Who just recently got married? A niece maybe? I saw some FB pics you were tagged in

nick said...

Pop up to right is much less exciting than homer to left.

Go Go Gadget Papi!

Amy said...

No, the almost 26 year old is single. Says she has no plans on settling down for a long time.

But the almost 30 (yikes) year old is married and expecting our first grandchild in FIVE weeks!!

SoSock said...

Hate it, but that was just a good pitch. Just outside, but too close to take with 2 strikes. Petey predictably hits it off the end of the bat to right field. God I wish I could box that up and feed it to my pitchers

Amy said...

Oh, and thanks for your kind words about Maddy (the younger one). She's my Red Sox fan daughter, an important bond for us since otherwise she is generally a real Daddy's girl.

SoSock said...

Yay grandkids! They're the bomb. Enjoy.
Between the older girl we took in and a couple of "step-grandkids", I have 6 running around when we're all together

SoSock said...

She's my Red Sox fan daughter,

Big :)

Amy said...

SCORE RUNS NOW!

allan said...

i'd disown the non-sox kid.

SoSock said...

MDC warming to the task. 6 straight.

Of course, this IS the Royals.....

Amy said...

I have yet to meet a person who says something negative about having grandchildren! I am definitely psyched. I am a real baby person, so I know I will fall in love immediately.

Amy said...

Well, if she had become a Yankee fan, I might have. But she is totally indifferent to sports. When she was little, she was a Sox fan, though she never could remember how many innings there were in a game or how many outs to an inning.

Plus she is the one providing the grandchild....

SoSock said...

Time to get wood.

I mean.....Wood.....I mean get TO Wood....you know

allan said...

alright, she stays in the will.

When she was little ... she never could remember ... how many outs to an inning.

Like Trot....

allan said...

ram and bot up - amy is thrilled.

the inseam of the grass????

Amy said...

LOL re Trot.

Amy said...

This whole game will be a trifecta nightmare for me in terms of pitchers if DiceK, Ramram and Bot end up pitching.

I am seriously thinking about not watching any more DiceK games...

allan said...

drew swung at 6 of 9 pitches inthis AB so far

SoSock said...

Funny. My older one was never a huge sports fan. Very athletic. Great dancer, skateboarder, etc. But played a little soccer, then baseball from about 9 to 13. Then he was done. And nevr cared to "learn the game". Which is fine. Thank g for a little diversity. The younger one is a baseball addict like his dad.

SoSock said...

HAHAHA

Just saw the Trot reference.

allan said...

and here comes ramram!

allan said...

drew is clearly fucking with OB's mind: swinging at 11 of 19 pitches tonight.

Amy said...

Yes, there is no predicting what kids will be interested in. The ironic thing for my older daughter is that she married an sports fanatic. He is a very loyal Mets and Jets fan (and thus knows all about suffering). She can't believe how much time he can spend watching, talking about and thinking about and reading about sports!

Kathryn said...

When she was little ... she never could remember ... how many outs to an inning.

Ha, when my daughter was little (3 yrs old), she always tried to get us to let her stay up later. We'd settle on one more song on the CD player. My brother taught her to ask for Freebird. We also would tell her she could stay up until the end of the inning. One night, it took forever...a lot of runs and a couple pitching changes. Fun things to remember.

Kathryn said...

Run(s) have now become a necessity.

allan said...

hermida
cactus
hall

stranger things have happened ...

Amy said...

See now with my daughter, we could have just told her the inning was over after one out, and she wouldn't have known better.

Ramram actually did a good job!

Now we really really need a run, at least one, preferably two.

nick said...

Couldn't we have a Dr. pinch hit or something?

Amy said...

Come on, VMart. Hit a dong with your sore toe.

nick said...

Well, not the doctor, but make it something!

nick said...

frak.

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

Amy said...

Close but no cigar.

I am so done with DiceK.

allan said...

that was a quick 9th.

SoSock said...

1st pitch swinging when you're down to your last out - NOT a fan. At a damn cutter even

Kathryn said...

Ugh. Do it tomorrow!

allan said...

CWS - 000 000 010 - 1 4 2
FKR - 100 011 02x - 5 7 0

MFY - 000 101
MIN - 120 011

Sox tied with idle Jays for third at 6.5.

SoSock said...

mmmmmmm
switched GDGD to the MFY game. I thought they were at the Toilet, but no. Wrong again.

SoSock said...

Twinkies tack on 3 in the 7th, up 8-3 over the Evil Empire, top 8th.

Kyle said...

Did any one else see this article by Tony Massarotti?

http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2010/05/central_issue_concerns_his_des.html

He is questioning Ellsbury desire to play. Seems like quite a bit of conjecture on Tony's part. Ellsbury always seems to play very hard when in the lineup.

Why is it that these media guys love trying to make players out to be lazy?

J$ said...

A) I think it's sort of a filler topic for sportswriters. If they don't have anything useful to say, they can pick on player X.

B) It's Tony Massarotti. He never has anything useful to say.
