G52: Red Sox 8, Royals 1

Royals - 010 000 000 - 1 5 0
Red Sox - 001 033 01x - 8 10 0
While the bottom three in the Boston lineup went 6-for-11 and scored seven runs, Lester (7-4-1-4-5, 105) kept the Royals in check.

Jason Varitek singled, hit a solo home run, and scored twice; Bill Hall singled twice and scored two runs; and Mike Cameron doubled twice, walked, scored three times and drove in two.

Marco Scutaro had two doubles and a single and drove in two runs. David Ortiz hit a two-run dong to dead center. He also had a sac fly.

Lester walked three of the first 11 batters, including the leadoff man in both of the first two innings, but settled down after that. He retired 11 of 12 batters (and 15 of 18) at one point, as the bats teed off on Kansas City reliever Brad Thompson.

Out of Town: The White Sox beat the Rays 8-5. Justin Masterson shut out the Yankees for six innings, but New York rallied and beat Cleveland 7-3. The Blue Jays completed a sweep of the Orioles 6-1.

So everyone gains a game on Tampa: New York 3.5, Toronto 4.5, Boston 5.5.

Lester vs. the Royals:

30IP, 11H, 11BB, 26K, 4R

I think he can improve on that line.

white caps - wtf?

This is my first game in ages. Thursday night, couldn't concentrate, Friday and Saturday, missed both games. Hooray for baseball, here when I need it.

Go Sox. Win please.

Yesterday I was on a steam train during the game.

perfect throw!

meunier said...

I knew that bunt was coming.

meunier said...

Wow time to DFA Bill Hall.

allan said...

A bunt?

Run Expectancy 1999-2002
the average number of runs that scored from base/out situations to the end of that inning

On 2nd, 0 outs: 1.19 runs
On 3rd, 1 out: 0.98 runs

Situations vary, of course ... but bunting a guy to 3rd with 0 outs decreases the chances of scoring.

allan said...

DFA Hall?
He's our 3rd best reliever.

I really don't like falling behind to the Royals. I like losing to them even less.

meunier said...

Doesn't Chen have a low ERA vs the Sox compared to other teams?

allan said...

Chen's career splits - ERA vs Sox 4.84

in innings pitched against teams, sox are 5th.

Patrick said...

Gah, Lester, dominate them!!

New Hampshire is the prettiest state in the union, OB?

I live there, and I'm sure there are at least two prettier states bordering NH.

Though it's a matter of taste...

OK, time for runs

I was watching the end of the Halladay perfect game yesterday, and I saw a Marlins fan with an old school Lowell jersey on.

Was pleased to see it.

At the game. Gotta say, the white hats look good...on the Royals. Shitty on the Sox though.

Did you know that since 2007, the Red Sox have the best record against the AL Central?

Give that man a day off!

allan said...

bottom three in the lineup have scored 7 times

laura k said...

Even bullpen haters might be able to relax today.

buffwarrior said...

Tek..so nice to see him get that offense going.

Patrick said...

579th consecutive sellout...

I wonder if they just sell all of the not-actually-sold-out tickets to stub hub, and count that.

laura k said...

I know how this sounds, but I can't believe people find what happened to Kendry Morales funny. They need to get their empathy meters checked.

laura k said...

Tek's offense has been going all along. In limited playing time, he was spraying HRs all over the place.

Patrick said...

I know how this sounds, but I can't believe people find what happened to Kendry Morales funny.

I agree completely. He broke it jumping on home base, or so it looked, and not getting crushed, but the circumstances are still kind of terrifying.

allan said...

since i don't care how it impacts the angels' season, assuming he will be okay once it heals, it's pretty amusing.

it reminds me of some wacky story i might have read about as a kid about a Class D minor league game in the 1910s or so.

laura k said...

Thanks, Patrick, I thought it might be just me. It must have been super painful, and it ends his entire season. Not funny.

buffwarrior said...

nothing like watching red sox on a sunday kick somebodies arse.. if it was the yankees or rays would have been a hell of a holiday.

laura k said...

since i don't care how it impacts the angels' season, assuming he will be okay once it heals, it's pretty amusing.

Translation: It doesn't affect me, so it's funny.

Humanity fail!

laura k said...

Imagine having a broken leg and a big pile of men on top of it. Hilarious!

allan said...

not like standup comedy, but in a "how in the f could that happen?"

allan said...

Fenway stands as one ...

The water is Muddy!!!

Patrick said...

agua

buffwarrior said...

i think the morales injury was more of a what the heck reaction. then because we knew he broke his leg.. i'm going don't jump on him!!!! Get off the poor guy. Just really sad.. I think large men just shouldn't try and jump up and go down as hard as they can..

allan said...

... now hold on, white sox.

buffwarrior said...

If they got a really good close up of the leg breaking.. i.e. Joe Theissman then the grimace factor goes up and comedy indicator leaves. I think we laugh at the falling down person as a society so our chuckle meter was thrown off.

laura k said...

Yeah well, I don't laugh at people falling down. I'm not saying I find it sad, but I always find it idiotic when people laugh at that stuff.

But the comments I saw weren't WTH. It was definitely WTH! The comments were ha ha ha, that is so funny.

Oh yeah: water!

laura k said...

i.e. Joe Theissman then the grimace factor goes up and comedy indicator leaves.

For sure. No one laughed at Bryce Florie or Damon's head butt - no one I know anyway. It was painful to watch.

allan said...

Finally saw the Morales AB. Wild. The walk-off becomes a cart-off.

They are saying fractured left ankle, they are waiting a week on surgery (too swollen now), and it is possible he could play in September.
