Buster Olney, ESPN:
[Jenks has] been told he'll be a set-up man in 2011 and will have a chance to be the closer after Papelbon is replaced.Well, the starkness of that comment is very interesting to read in December. Papelbon will be a free agent after the 2011 season and there is no way (in my opinion) the Red Sox will be signing him to either the years or the dollars he will expect/demand (Fruitbat money).
Joe Sheehan, SI:
Jenks for 2/12 is the best FA relief contract of the winter. Peripherals/skills are fine.
Six minutes before Heyman tweeted the signing, he wrote:
ReplyDelete"keep hearing #redsox open to trading papelbon. of course, being a 5-yr arb eligible closer off down yr, value is miniscule"
***
Four hours ago, Heyman tweeted that Jenks was "looking for 'closer money,' presumably $8 mil and up". He did not get it.
ReplyDeleteAlso from Heyman: "yankees called about king felix but mariners said 'absolutely not.'"
Rosenthal said last night, according to MLB Trade Rumors from this morning, the Rays and Yankees were showing interest.
ReplyDeleteTheo is always lurking in the darkness, ready to strike. He's like an alligator. A little ripple of water and BAM! Your face is ripped off.
But aww, we welcome Bobby Jenks in one breath and say goodbye to Eric Patterson in another. I wonder if he was the PTBNL in the Gonzalez deal? Off to San Diego you go.

ReplyDeleteNot so fast, says Sean McAdam:
ReplyDelete"Hearing talk of Jenks' signing "premature'' -- and not just because of physical, etc. More to do on contract, still."
Fucker better shave, too. See the pic I posted.
ReplyDeletePatterson is indeed the PTBNL
ReplyDeleteCafardo says that Jenks "has declined the last three seasons", but he was also quite unlucky last year with a .354 BABIP. (.283 in 2009 and .264 in 2008; .299 career)
ReplyDeleteI like his K rate going 5.5, 8.3, 10.4.
He turns 30 in March.
What's this I hear about trading Papelbon? :-)
ReplyDeleteI am turning the TV off when he pitches if he doesn't shave that mess off his face. There is no way I can look at that.
ReplyDeleteGreat value per lb too.
ReplyDeleteYeah I don't mind most facial hair but his is stupid. Watch, he'll paint that shit red, too.
ReplyDeleteWell if he leaves it pink we can call him La Guapa!

Lets be careful what we wish for...
And the Olney comments make no sense, that Jenks will be closer when Pap leaves, why would the Red Sox lower Pap's value by ever saying that
Judging from the pic, it looks to me like his first priority is to get expert advice on how to holster his fun-bags.
ReplyDeleteJust a guess but did he paint it pink for Breast Cancer Awareness on Mother's Day?
ReplyDeleteI don't give two shits what he looks like, so long as he sets the table for the ninth.

Isn't that Bard's job?
Great value per lb too.
ReplyDeleteThat made this great offseason even better.
SG:
ReplyDeleteHeadwarmer: Lee is gone. ... He's gone to the Phillies. They signed him for less than we offered while you've been rappelling walls ...
Cashman: It can't be.
Headwarmer: Oh, it be. ...
Paps get get Fruitbat Money when he starts throwing Fruitbat Pitches.
ReplyDeleteIt's outlandish he's getting the money he's getting now.
Personally I'm liking this. Of course, I love characters. Especially characters that can play ball.
ReplyDeleteAnd he will forever be Jarjar to me
Just a guess but did he paint it pink for Breast Cancer Awareness on Mother's Day?
ReplyDeleteYes.
Signing a big heavy recently-successful closer with funny facial hair to use as Pap's set-up man? 3 worrying words for us all - Eric Frickin Gagne.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote on this hideous picture that I saw on SoSH:
ReplyDeleteHis name is Robert Paulson.
No Worries, no worries. We all know history never repeats itself.
ReplyDeleteIt's all good.
Edgar Renteria is pissed at the Giants $1 million offer for 2011.
ReplyDelete"That offer from the Giants was a lack of respect. A total disrespect. To play for a million dollars, I'd rather stay with my private business and share more time with my family. Thank God I'm well off financially and my money is well invested."
"I have received at least another offer since I was a free agent, but it wasn't what I'm looking for to continue playing. If I got a good offer, I'm playing, and if not, it's better to stay at home."
This plays perfectly into my theory that no good 'pen is complete without an obese reliever.
ReplyDelete>>I don't give two shits what he looks like, so long as he sets the table for the ninth.

Depends on whether Papelbon is closing for the Sox next year. I guess I'm not envisioning Jenks in a middle relief role if he has been a closer his whole career (six seasons). But then anything's possible, isn't it?
As long as "Bobby Jenks Nude" doesn't become a popular JoS search string, I will continue to support this site.
