G30: Angels 5, Red Sox 3 (13)

Angels - 000 000 201 000 2 - 5 12 2
Red Sox - 000 000 012 000 0 - 3 11 0
This one finally ends at 2:45 AM, as Daisuke Matsuzaka takes the loss in his first major league relief appearance. He pitched the 13th inning, allowing a leadoff single before getting two pop outs. Then he gave up another single, a walk (loading the bases), and a two-run single to Bobby Abreu.

The Red Sox rallied to tie the game in the ninth. Jed Lowrie walked and Mike Cameron singled. With Carl Crawford at the plate, the ball got away from Angels' catcher Hank Conger. Lowrie took off for third. Conger's throw was wild, and the ball (instead of going into left field) caromed off the umpire's leg out to the shortstop position.

Lowrie scored, but Cameron was thrown out on an ill-advised attempt to get to third. So Boston trailed 3-2, with no one on base and one out. Crawford doubled to left center, and after Jason Varitek struck out, Jacoby Ellsbury lined a single to right field to tie the game.

With one out in the 11th, and Marco Scutaro on first, Kevin Youkilis nearly won the game with a dong, but his fly ball hit high off the Wall, no more than a foot for two from the top. Third base coach Tim Bogar waved Scutaro home, but then changed his mind and put up the stop sign. It was too late, however, and Scutaro was gunned down at the plate.

Because of the lengthy rain delay (2 hours, 35 minutes), Boston did not get its first hit until 12:17 AM!

Check out Jere's blog for play-by-play details of the final six innings.

8:31 PM: Rain delay, with one out in the top of the fifth. Beckett: 4.1-1-0-3-3, 68. Santana has not allowed a hit: 4-0-0-1-7, 61.

Example
Ervin Santana / Josh Beckett

Beckett and the Red Sox (14-15) will try to get to .500 for the first time this season. They were 10-11 on April 26, but lost the next two games.

Beckett has allowed the fewest H/9 in the AL (5.3). The only stingier pitcher in MLB is Florida's Josh Johnson, who has allowed a freakishly low 3.9 H/9 (18 hits in 41 innings; opposing batters are hitting .130/.195/.196).Beckett also has the third-lowest WHIP in the AL (after Dan Haren and Jered Weaver) and is 10th in K/9.

In their last 17 games, the Red Sox have a team ERA of 2.37 (2.61 RA/9 overall). They have scored 4.7 R/G over that time, hitting .265/.337/.421.

AL East: Orioles/Royals at 2 PM; Blue Jays/Rays at 6:30 PM; Yankees/Tigers at 7 PM.

I have a feeling that if the game is played that it will be a soaked affair. Weather forecast calls for lots of rain over the next two hours or so and more to follow. Let's hope we can get a ball game in between the rain drops!

Our backyard is a swamp. The dogs run around for 10 seconds and their legs and bellies are covered in mud. I am so fucking sick of the rain and drying them off, and doing laundry.

So, Mr. Rain! Do not fuck with my baseball games.

ugh - espn for me.

and on sportscenter, sutcliffe mentions one pitcher as having "one of those swing-and-miss fastballs".

better than having "one of those it-gets-jacked-into-the-upper-deck fastballs", i suppose.

In their last 17 games, the Red Sox have a team ERA of 2.37

This is just sick. If everything proceeds apace and we really have Good DiceK, Good Beckett, Good Lackey, and OMG Lester to go along with Buchholz then we're really really going to win an astonishing shit ton of games.

Jere said...

So many balls being hit to the Triangle lately. It seems.

allan said...

wow - what a shit throw

allan said...

OB and nomar on espn. nomar finds it interesting that abreu swung at the first pitch and flied out after a 4-pitch walk. (yeah, interesting...)

It really was. We decided that my father-in-law could have stolen second on that throw (in his motorized scooter, of course).

Good evening. I am on and off, answering student questions by email all night and tomorrow night before the exam on Friday. In the old days they had to come see me in person. This is much more efficient, but more do it so it consumes more time overall. So anyway---not much threading for me til the exam is over!

No, Kat. I have never taught during the summer. It was one of the gifts I gave myself when I started teaching. I do write over the summer, but I do not teach.

Game comes back for a second, so I can see action's about to start, then local ads for fucking "Club Fantasies" cut in, and I know I have to be missing the game. The ads finally end, and the ball is rolling in left field, I see I missed two pitches including the hit and the ball going off the wall.

Scioscia, realizing the field is a pond, brings in Walden. And we're on him! Two on, no outs! Dong will WIN it!

Jere said...

Oh wait Matthews didn't do anything since he died when it went extras. Very nice play by Pap covering first for a rare 4-1 putout.

Jere said...

Zenslinger said...

Even on the West Coast, I need to go to bed.

Jere said...

MLB Network has some highlights, finally, but can't show the end of the game.

I am sure I'm not the first to think of it -- but imagine what our W-L record is against teams that are not the Angels!

Jere said...

Okay, I said this in like the 7th inning--I want this game to be won on a HR that just hits empty seats and bounces around as fans chase it while celebrating. Do it!

Jere said...

Scutaro, with his delayed, one-hop throw and mistimed jump put us here. Now he needs to get us home.

Jere said...

Darnell, steal second, then Mueller singles you home

Zenslinger said...

C'mon Jed. Let us go to bed.

allan said...

Darnell, steal second, then Mueller singles you home

and then we play 3 more innings?

JED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

Jere said...

I wanted to get there for batting practice tomorrow but I'm not so sure either team will be awake for that. We go bottom 11, tied.

allan said...

Beans said...

If you bought a ticket you most likely left. Empty Fenway during gametimes always looks so very strange..

Jere said...

"If you bought a ticket you most likely left."

Right but I never leave early, so these are the games I live for. When you're the only one left and you get every foul ball. The stuff dreams are made of.

allan said...

who is still out in the pen? jenks?

Jere said...

Come on Marco, Monster Seats.

Jere said...

Eck said they're saving Jenks for tomorrow. But Dice is still out there.

Jere said...

woohoo, winning run on first.
