G35: Red Sox 2, Twins 1 (11)

Twins - 000 000 010 00 - 1 10 1
Red Sox - 000 010 000 01 - 2 9 0
Carl Crawford collected his second game-winning hit in nine days, doubling off the Wall and scoring pinch-runner Jose Iglesias from first base. The extra-inning victory brought the Red Sox (once again) to one game within .500 (17-18), 3.5 GB New York and Tampa Bay in the AL East.

With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Twins reliever Jim Hoey walked Jed Lowrie on five pitches. Iglesias pinch-ran, and Crawford ran the count full (bcfbfb) before slapping an opposite field double.

Hideki Ojakima got credit for the victory, pitching two innings and throwing 43 pitches. He escaped a 1st/2nd, one out jam in both the 10th and 11th - and a 2nd/3rd, 2 out jam later in the 11th.

Boston scored in the fifth when Jason Varitek (2-for-4) doubled into the left field corner and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's single to left.

Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a single in the third. ... Darnell McDonald, pinch-running for Tek in the bottom of the ninth, was picked off first base and tagged out in a 1-3-6-3-4 rundown. ... Dustin Pedroia's double in the 10th inning was his first extra-base hit since April 15 (87 plate appearances).

After seven innings, Beckett (7-6-0-1-5, 103) handed the ball to Alfredo Aceves, who allowed a one-out single to Denard Span, then balked him to second. Jonathan Papelbon was called in for a five-out save, but he allowed a bloop single to Jason Kubel that tied the game at 1-1.
Example

Nick Blackburn / Josh Beckett

After slogging through several weeks of near daily rain - which turned our backyard into a mini-swamp (which = two extremely muddy dogs) - today was the first truly beautiful, warm spring/summer day. ... Tala has been hosed and is surveying her backyard kingdom, Diego is wandering around with a look of wonder at his good fortune, and we are relaxing, sipping champagne! Tonight is Grilling Evening #1 for 2011: organic steaks, asparagus, and red wine.

And then ... baseball!!!!

In his last 14 games, Adrian Gonzalez is hitting .386/.407/.667, for a 1.073 OPS. And that's with very few walks (two in his last 59 plate appearances and only three since April 17). So what's doing is flat-out hitting the bejesus out of the ball.

Leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury is also on a tear -- .394/.420/.530/.951 in his last 15 games.
              GM AVG OBP SLG OPS
On April 10 9 .156 .229 .281 .510
Since then 25 .340 .390 .536 .927
Season total 34 .295 .350 .473 .823
Ellsbury - who has a 17-game hitting streak - is first on the team in runs scored, second in hits and doubles, third in average, fourth in slugging, and fifth in OPS.

On the other hand, #2 hitter Dustin Pedroia is having a rough time. He's 8-for-61 (all singles) in his last 15 games (.131/.239/.131/.371). Outside of his white-hot performance in the April 8-10 series against New York (9-for-13), FY's average is only .184.

AL East: Tigers/Blue Jays at 7 PM.

That sounds great, Allan! Enjoy! I am ready for a little baseball.

allan said...

Prepare to be pissed off tonight:

HP: Joe West
1B: Angel Hernandez

Amy said...

I am not in the mood to be pissed off. Baseball is supposed to be lifting my spirits after spending the entire day grading exams.

Hey A, were those steaks just grass fed or grass fed and then corn finished.....I looked on the site and I didn't find it..

laura k said...

9C, they are organically, locally and ethically* raised, but not completely grass fed. They grow up on grass and eat corn towards the end.

* If one believes that there is such a thing as ethical meat eating, as I do.

OK, so was that question sarcastic or serious?

laura k said...

Hello, baseball. So happy to be relaxing on the couch with you.

allan said...

FY with the .666 OPS

Amy said...

I am getting to like this Gonzalez guy.

allan said...

i want to punch rick sutcliffe in the face.

Jere said...

"FY with the .666 OPS"

HY

Maxwell Horse said...

There goes the no-hitter.

Jere said...

Is Blogger having problems for anyone else? I keep getting "service unavailable."

laura k said...

I am getting to like this Gonzalez guy.

Good! His slow start had you doubting his potential, IIRC.

Amy said...

I think I have had my doubts about the whole team this season at times. Except FY, despite his current slump.

NICE!

laura k said...

You seemed pretty anti-EB. I'm glad he's winning you over. (Since that means he's hitting!)

9casey said...

No , it was serious.........we have a few farms in the Litchfield Hills that the cows are all grass fed and organic, but they taste like cardboard.... Organic is a very ambigious word for me, it has turned into something it was never intended for... People who handout organic certifications here in CT , take profits from you and require you to pay all expenses for them to certify you which in the end could cost thousands.....
There is a lot of farmers who raise most of their cattle and produce organically but do not want to pay the cost to have the stupid label.....

Amy said...

Was I? I guess I have blocked that out. I knew him by reputation so I knew his potential. I just have generally been really frustrated. Not that I am alone in that regard.

laura k said...

This is incredibly delicious meat and chicken, the best I have ever tasted. It makes supermarket meat taste like cardboard.

Organic certification can be a ruse, it's true. This stuff is "beyond organic," as the expression goes. It means the animals lived animal lives, wandering around on farms, not living in feed lots, getting shot full of drugs.

But also, organic farming costs much much more than conventional farming. They have to charge more. The prices are coming down as more people buy organic products - compared to 10 years ago, for example.

laura k said...

Also, grass fed meat will taste different at different times - the way meat normally would - the way it used to before cows were turned into machinery and farms were turned into factories.

Amy said...

Nice!!

laura k said...

Yeah DP!

allan said...

EB has got a glove!

laura k said...

18! :)

allan said...

aaron boone on espn was talking about crawford and ellsbury getting their hitting strokes and being a great 1-2 punch at the top of the red sox order -- seemingly unaware that crawford is hitting 8th tonight (and has been hitting 7th-8th most of the year).

Amy said...

Well, Aaron Boone has never been one of my heroes...

laura k said...

He's done nothing to be anyone's hero.

Amy said...

I think there are some Yankee fans who might disagree.

laura k said...

Ignorant ones. We know who their hero should be. But we don't say his name.

Amy said...

Yes, I know better than that.

laura k said...

Rick Sutcliffe is my least favourite announcer.

In case you were wondering.

Amy said...

OK, let's score some runs.

Fortunately, I have NESN. But no news on Remy? Eckersley still in throwing cheese around.

Zenslinger said...

Jedi Arm to end that last inning, eh.

laura k said...

J.D.ouble

Amy said...

On fire on fire!

laura k said...

I guess he didn't care enough to get a triple.

Zenslinger said...

DJ!

Zenslinger said...

Argh. That looked real good off the bat from Jed.

Amy said...

Another game where we just can't get them home...

laura k said...

Neither team has gotten anyone home yet

allan said...

Twins fans are saying the same thing.

Zenslinger said...

I would venture to say Beckett's pitching better. But that could change quickly!

Amy said...

TEK!

allan said...

Cactek!

Amy said...

It doesn't bother me that the TWINS haven't scored though.

Amy said...

Arggh. Bring him home, God damn it!

Amy said...

Thank you, EB!!

allan said...

fuck your pitchign conference.

Zenslinger said...

Trust Evil Bert to break through the logjam. First pitch, goes with it, effortless.

And whoever came up with "Evil Bert" deserves a drink. It's brilliant.

allan said...

And whoever came up with "Evil Bert" deserves a drink. It's brilliant.

Benjamin.

allan said...

aceves and hill up

Zenslinger said...

Nice inning there, Josh.

laura k said...

Tek on fire!

tim said...

Nice menu! Need to settle down this week on the wine consumption, we got a wine fridge on Saturday and stocked it. Due to the kickass weather all weekend, supplies are now depleted.

Club soda and baseball for me tonight! Also one of the first games I've been able to sit down and really enjoy.

Now make me enjoy it more LBJ! MAKE ME...

Zenslinger said...

Cap'n is rockin' that BA up to .160.

Next he'll steal second.

tim said...

Tek on fire!

Sounds like that popular Kings of Leon song.

Amy said...

Cannot believe he caught that....

Zenslinger said...

Is Tek saying Span trapped it?

Amy said...

Uch.

Zenslinger said...

ESPN lists Bard and Hill warming up when it's obviously Papelbon.

laura k said...

A few innings ago I said I'd like to win 1-0. Almost there...

Amy said...

WTF?

allan said...

tito is gonna have a heart attack

fucking hernandez

Zenslinger said...

Calmly, Terry, calmly...

Amy said...

Do umpires ever get impeached or fired or whatever?

Amy said...

Eck and Orsillo have no clue what he did wrong.

allan said...

west fucking us too - giving the twins extra chances. bit aceves gets him.

tim said...

Here we go...take a shot every time Francona argues a balk.

I would say every time West blows a call, but I don't wanna kill anyone.

Benjamin said...

West['s brand] is too big to fail.

laura k said...

Need to settle down this week on the wine consumption, we got a wine fridge on Saturday and stocked it. Due to the kickass weather all weekend, supplies are now depleted.

Heh, I like this.

Bad weather, had to stay inside and drink wine. Good weather, lots of time on patio drinking wine.

A win-win all around!

Zenslinger said...

Their best hitter (at the moment) and instead of trying to LOOGY him, Terry brings in Papelbon. As he was obviously planning for. Nice.

Amy said...

Come on, Papelbon, don't be Pap 2010.

Zenslinger said...

"Papelbon's in the last year of his contract..."

Duh. You mean he'll be a FA next year.

allan said...

sut says something like bot vs kubel - best vs best - is what brings people out to the ball park, as if people will hear that this is going on in the 8th inning and hurry up and run out to fenway to buy a ticket to see it. (better hope it's a really long BA)

Amy said...

FUCK

tim said...

FUCK off pap.

Zenslinger said...

It was a good AB -- but a bullshit hit. Damn.

Amy said...

There goes your 1-0 game, Laura. Careful what you wish for...

laura k said...

Ok, never mind that 1-0 win. Any RS win will do.

tim said...

There's always an excuse to drink wine, L. Always!

allan said...

sut: "kubel is so big and strong and locked in there"

someone likes kubel...

laura k said...

Be careful what you wish for only applies if your wish comes true but it ends up being a bad thing. Right now neither team can win 1-0.

laura k said...

Tim, I concur.

allan said...

sox 8th
yook
flo
drew
lowrie

Amy said...

Yeah, just great, Papelbon. You stink.

Amy said...

Well, wishing for a 1-0 game means you are wishing for the Sox not to score more than one run. That ended up being a bad thing.

laura k said...

Allan: "Now we get seven."

SoSock said...

Damn. Was that bot's 1st batter faced? Just got to the bar after watching granddaughters softball doubleheader. Just in time to see an excellent score get changed. Beckett must have done well

tim said...

That sut line made me giggle.

In my list* of fantasy batter vs. pitcher, tying run on, 2 outs late matchups, Papelbon vs. Kubel is not something that would "bring me to a ballpark"

* - I do not have such a list, but if I did, this would probably be well in the 200s.

laura k said...

It was also wishing for the other team to not score - and for the Sox to be able to hold a 1-0 lead. I.e. really good Sox pitching.

But not tonight.

laura k said...

Sut has to make everything into The Most Dramatic Moment Ever. Every player is The Hero.

tim said...

A couple hours ago, I was thinking that this guy sounds like a typical "FJM target" - you know, the southern drawl "Who cares about all them there silly stats, lets just play some good ol BASEBALL!"

I was thinking this as the greatest and only stats ever flashed over whatever batter was up (AVG/HR/RBI)

Benjamin said...

Guess we're setting up a walkoff.

tim said...

Good to see detroit softening up the jays again tonight (10-2 tigers). I can't remember, you guys going to one of the games tomorrow/wed?

allan said...

perkins may be hurt, and sut says there is a limit to how many players a team can put on the DL.

???

"sorry, you have 4 guys on the DL, that guy with the broken arm will have to stay on the roster"

Kathryn said...

Hey, just joining the action now. I checked in when we were up 1-0. Looks like Pap gave up the run??

We are packing up the UHaul, as our daughter graduates from college on Sunday and is moving into an apartment in Williamsburg (VA). She came home to get her bedroom furniture and such. Her room is going to be bare.

allan said...

no - buffyvision all the way

laura k said...

No, no Sox-Jays games for us this year - just a game in Detroit at the end of the month.

laura k said...

So according to ESPN announcer, if Papelbon had held the 1-0 lead, "sox fans could have rolled home having seen a win".

Newsflash: they still can.

Zenslinger said...

This essay I just graded is driving me to open a beer. I will have to get up early and finish them. I feel like a starting pitcher who's been knocked out.

Benjamin said...

West doesn't even put any effort into his ejection calls.

tim said...

no worries about the 8th, just setting it up for the following:

Jason Varitek - Captain and team leader. Two-time world champion and one of the best, smartest backstops in the game. Struggling at the plate thus far with a .160 average this year, but batting with 2 outs and a full count in the bottom of the 9th.

...ok sick of that. Varitek walk-off, you heard it here.

Jere said...

"I'm tellin' you Gardy..."

allan said...

So according to ESPN announcer, if Papelbon had held the 1-0 lead, "sox fans could have rolled home having seen a win".

Dear ESPN:

We play the 9th inning in the AL.

tim said...

It'd also be nice if they shut up about basketball. Christ ESPN, I realize your sportscentre show is all basketball and football, but do you really need to talk about it DURING the odd time you show a baseball game?

laura k said...

Setting up the walkoff sounds good.

Amy said...

Zen, I know that feeling all too well.

laura k said...

Tim channeling Allan

laura k said...

Not that I disagree!

allan said...

yes, the crowd is quiet, they MUST KNOW that the celtics lost.

if castig could shut the FUCK UP about college sports and trivia, i might be able to stand him. maybe.

Jere said...

I got Lowrie with a double, Crawford with a single up the middle for the quick win. Would be cool to see Pedroia get the winning hit though too, he needs something like that.

tim said...

What kind of wine? Pelee pinot?

allan said...

this may be the wine talking, but

lowrie out
crawford out
tek - DONG

laura k said...

All around me teachers are complaining about grading papers.

Jere said...

Does your Tek dong also come on a full count?

Amy said...

Shit, that looked good.

laura k said...

Oh fuck you catching that

Jere said...

Wait, Iglesias is #78 now? Two games, two different numbers?

Dr. Jeff said...

I just submitted my final grades today. Would be nice to have a walkoff here.

Kathryn said...

Okay, all set up for the Tek walkoff.

Jere said...

2 outs for Tek!

tim said...

At least tax season is over one month into the baseball season! No complaints here anymore, easy livin' all around.

I found castig's college shit very annoying as well, during the few full games I listened to earlier in the year.

allan said...

ok cactus ...

Amy said...

Don and Eck also betting on a Tek dong.

laura k said...

The Castig college sports chatter gets really old.

Amy said...

It would certainly lift my spirits.

tim said...

just workin' it full...

Amy said...

Not a dong, but NOT an out!

Jere said...

ooh baby, now make 'em pay

tim said...

useless cactus.

thanks morn-E-au!

Kathryn said...

The cactus was moving.

laura k said...

Safe! Not a walkoff, but we'll take it!

tim said...

err, make that, Hugh-E-s

Amy said...

Perhaps an LBJ dong?

Zenslinger said...

Ha ha -- Varitek infield hit is a more unlikely outcome than his hitting a walkoff dong!

laura k said...

LOL @ Zen

Amy said...

What the hell was he thinkgin?

tim said...

not dave roberts.

allan said...

i was going to say, as a joke, don't get picked off, idiot .............

laura k said...

Oh no you didint

Benjamin said...

Useless Darnell.

laura k said...

oh fuck. jeemer.

Amy said...

I think maybe I will go grade a paper instead of watching this half inning.

Amy said...

Arggh.

allan said...

dp pls

Zenslinger said...

I pshaw'ed a little bit when a local writer described the Giants as having a national fanbase. But darned if there wasn't a guy with a Giants hat in the stands there.

Talk about the size of the booth kind of dumb. It's not like it's 12-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Amy said...

DP please.

Zenslinger said...

I'm about to follow Amy's example.

Benjamin said...

For what it's worth, I'm vicariously grading papers too.

Jere said...

maybe his foot kept it from going to CF and the runner going to third. maybe.

Jere said...

one more then Dustin wins it in 10th

allan said...

i'm grading players

jeemer is a C+ right now.

Zenslinger said...

Wow. They have no one to pinch hit.

Amy said...

Please score a run. I have to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Benjamin said...

Wow. They have no one to pinch hit.

Iglesias is due! (That's my story.)

Amy said...

Allan, you need a tougher curve. I'd call that a C-. Putting two on base has to be below the median.

FWIW, I'd give Papelbon a D and Beckett an A-.

Amy said...

Not good, LBJ.

Zenslinger said...

Their pitcher, Mejares, is like Sea Bass the Second.

tim said...

fuck.

alright, time for the laser show to return (as jere already called a while ago).

Amy said...

Eck calls FY for the walkoff now.

tim said...

up into the JoS 1 area!

allan said...

tim - i JUST said that!!!!

Amy said...

A double for Dustin!

tim said...

this is an acceptable laser show.

now time for the EB show!

Jere said...

we got Adrian, whatcha gonna do Twins????

Zenslinger said...

I meant Minnesota!

Amy said...

Time for some EVIL.

Benjamin said...

Please score a run. I have to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Please score a run. I have to go make ramp pesto.

Jere said...

damn i thought that was up the middle

Amy said...

Not evil enough.

Youk, please...let me go to sleep in peace.

tim said...

tito should do a shot of that vodka i posted earlier, throw iglesias in as a PH and call for a squeeze.

then after they win, piss on hernandez/west.

Jere said...

uncork one!

Amy said...

Papi, show them that they can't disrespect you like that.

Benjamin said...

Damn, no passed ball in the intentional walk.

allan said...

BBI to face flo with a walkoff right there ...

bad idea. dumb idea.

tim said...

you fuckin serious west?

tim said...

i thought pedey was running there!

allan said...

that's "yankee joe"

Benjamin said...

Poop.

Amy said...

God damn it.

Jere said...

damn, we shoulda just made 10 louder

allan said...

flo murders his helmet...

Amy said...

Who is going to pitch?

Dr. Jeff said...

Why is Ortiz incapable of hitting it to the opposite field?

allan said...

he's been bangin' to left all year - i figured that was the deal tonight, but no ...

allan said...

3 AM ... here we come ....

tim said...

shi(f)t.

Zenslinger said...

Fuckin...crap. And what is that signoff before the ad? "The inability to get a big hit with runners in scoring position has been their biggest problem."

Or, wait...is he right?

Dr. Jeff said...

Well, still a high % of balls grounded to deep 2nd.

Kathryn said...

Pushing our luck with Jeemer for another inning?

tim said...

Why is there no one warming?

allan said...

sox 11

drew
lowrie
crawford
salty

Benjamin said...

Now don't squander.

tim said...

OMG OKI

Jere said...

Houdeki?

Zenslinger said...

I, for one, would like to hand it to Okajima there.

tim said...

Just fucking win this, now.

Dr. Jeff said...

Need a new bingo square: "And the wind knocks it down."

allan said...

absent-mindedly, i thought the pbp guy was dan shulman. earlier i saw it was sean mcdonough.

(yikes. sean's game must have declined a LOT.)

Amy said...

OK, I am still sort of here.
