G38: Red Sox 5, Yankees 4

Red Sox - 000 200 300 - 5 9 1
Yankees - 000 020 011 - 4 8 0
Buchholz had by far his best outing of the season (7-5-2-1-7, 110), Adrian Gonzalez hit his sixth home run in the past week, and Kevin Youkilis belted an opposite field two-run bomb off Joba Chamberlain to give the Red Sox a necessary cushion.

The Yankees (3-7 since May 3) have lost five games in the standings in 10 days, and are now 2 GB behind the Rays, who shut out the Orioles 3-0 behind Jeremy Hellickson (9-4-0-1-3, 120). The Red Sox and Blue Jays are tied for third, 5 GB.

Daniel Bard faltered in the eighth, giving up a triple to Curtis Granderson and wild pitching him home. Then Bard walked Alex Rodriguez and hit Robinson Cano in the left foot, and watched as they pulled off a double steal. But Bard struck out Nick Swisher on high heat and then got Dumbo to ground to second.

With two outs in the ninth, Jonathan Papelbon allowed singles to Derek Jeter and Granderson, but he retired Mark Teixeira on a pop-up to third to end the game.

Colon (6-5-3-3-4, 103) threw more pitches than he had in any game since he threw 103 on June 1, 2008, for the Red Sox. His one bad inning was the fourth: Gonzalez led off with a rocket into the second deck in right.
(the ball is a blur above the head of the guy above the word "grab")

Youkilis struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. David Ortiz walked and was forced at second by J.D. Drew; Jed Lowrie walked to load the bases. Yook scored on Carl Crawford's grounder to first.

Colon started the seventh (which was odd) and allowed an 0-2 single to Jarrod Saltalamacchia before handing the ball to Chamberlain. Jacoby Ellsbury forced Salty at second and raced to third on Dustin Pedroia's perfectly-placed hit-and-run single to right field. Gonzalez's deep fly to the track in left scored Ellsbury and then Yook donged to right-center.

Example
Clay Buchholz/ Bartolo Colon

The Red Sox play a three-game series in New York this weekend. The Yankees (20-15) dropped out of first place last night, and are one game behind the Rays. Boston is tied for fourth place with the Blue Jays, at 17-20, and 5 GB.

The Red Sox and Yankees have each lost their last two games. Boston has dropped five of their last eight and New York has lost six of their last nine.

AL East: Orioles/Rays at 7 PM and Blue Jays/Twins at 8 PM.

btw, allan, i've moved on to reckoning and am loving it.

laura k said...

Ugh, no NESN. You know what that means. Thank goddess for MLB Audio.

allan said...

for once, i am happy to be at work for a sox-mfy game - nesn!

tim said...

We get Yankee announcers for the rest of the games this series, you'd think they would at least have the courtesy to show the Boston feed for the one game they have announcers at.

allan said...

i've moved on to reckoning and am loving it.

thumbs up!

allan said...

meaning fox and espn, i assume?

tim said...

allan said...

we might get sean mcdonough on fox, though; he'd be considered a sox guy, right?

allan said...

bert and flo need to take advantage of the short toilet porch.

tim said...

i assumed it would be buck.

allan said...

20 pitches - all fastballs

Amy said...

Hi, all. Could we please win?

tim said...

speaking of toilet - shit! that reminds me, i have to rip ours apart tonight. steph dropped *something* (she's not sure what) into it as it was flushing and since then it's been in rough shape.

tim said...

The replay is called "YES-MO" - as opposed to Nomo?

tim said...

Good start for HH...24 to go.

Tim, Reckoning is my favourite REM album - one of my all-time faves, period.

Hey you guys, when you get a min, check out a Globe & Mail story posted at wmtc. Wmtc is alluded to (not mentioned by name). Bad news for Canada but good that WRs were mentioned.

allan said...

That reminds me. I have to finally look at the docs the campaign got and see if I can ID the spy by process of elimiation on various addresses and ccs.

allan said...

Or maybe they forgot to redact all of the instances of the key email address/name.

allan said...

deal don and eck: jeter got the shit booed out of when he was in that 0 for 28 slide several years ago.

(i love don: "what if he's in decline?!?" .. yeah, because a 37 yo SS might not be...)

allan said...

curt young seems like a bit of a thickee in interviews.

laura k said...

It's worth a try. The wildest thing was when the CIC called with information! Many Campaign friends said, Only in Canada would a spy also try to help you out!

Some people thought the spy is personally sympathetic to the WRs.

This is the first time I've ever been tempted to text one of those questions from the broadcast. "What is the most over-rated statistic in baseball?"

fusionmouse said...

Most over-rated as a stat...Pitcher Wins!

Best stat for a team... WINS!

allan said...

18 outs to go.

fusionmouse said...

Keep dealin' Laptop.

allan said...

BERT.

laura k said...

Evil dong!!

tim said...

DONGZO!!!!!!

laura k said...

Most over-rated as a stat...Pitcher Wins!

Yep! But my text didn't go thru, so they'll never know.

An HR in 6 of last 7 games!

Climb pitch count climb (for Colon).
Get that man a sandwich.

Jake of All Trades said...

WEEI Gameday Audio keeps going to commercial in the middle of an at bat for me. Happened twice so far. Anyone else getting that?

laura k said...

Talk about missing pitches! Is anyone listening to EEI? This is the second time they've run a whole set of commercials and promos - during an inning!! They've missed a total of four ABs in two different innings!

Then the ads suddenly cut off and Castig is calling the game. No mention of it, no apology for technical issues - the announcers clearly don't know it's happening.

fusionmouse said...

Clearly afraid of the force.

laura k said...

Aw Winston! Tala hopes to see him this summer.

tim said...

Colon routinely eats BLTHHs for breakfast.

Jake of All Trades said...

I guess if Laura and I have the same rant at the same time I'm not alone :)

laura k said...

Jake & I must have posted at the same time.

tim said...

alright, highschool genius playlist is done. time for some Band to take me through the middle innings.

HH dealing

laura k said...

This is the state of my brain.

I am folding laundry while I watch the game. I have to Google something. I go over to my netbook, but first I check the thread. And promptly forget what I was going to Google. Pfft. Gone.

meunier said...

Eckersley?

meunier said...

Somehow I saw that coming

Amy said...

Just here to say...

laura k said...

Oh fuck.

I think of The Band as Canadian, despite Levon.

nesn "Way off the bag"

ummmm, his foot was ON the bag

allan said...

why are don and eck so blind? what replays are they watching?

Amy said...

Bad call...

allan said...

i hate when an annoucer gives an opinion on a close play, then looks at several slo-mo replays that clearly show the opposite, and he keeps repeating his original (wrong) call.

laura k said...

allan said...

Expected back Monday. It was in today's papers, as well, I think.

Amy said...

Glad to hear it. I was getting worried...

allan said...

laura k said...

Yeah! Pitches in and out of trouble.

allan said...

okay, face yook, then.

nick said...

Hey all! haven't been around much. Emma and I went to a local sports bar to watch the first half of the game on account of no TV at home. Now it's bedtime and listening to the radio on the phone.

Turns out the "crazy buffalo" wings were hot.

Amy said...

Bring that run home, Papi.

laura k said...

Emma's lucky, that sounds like fun.

laura k said...

OK, J.D.Ong. I will also accept a Drewble.

Dr. Jeff said...

It's a game of inches.

Amy said...

Papelbon better hold this lead.

allan said...

It's a game of inches.

TWSS

laura k said...

Classic TWSS

allan said...

Now batting, Mr. 27 ....

Dr. Jeff said...

Be so awesome to have Jeter make the last out here.

laura k said...

Holy shit EEI is doing it again - the game is on and I'm listening to ads. THREE times in this game!!! GRRRRR

Amy said...

Damn it.

Jake of All Trades said...

WEEI, NOOOO! Reminds me of that Fox game that switched to NASCAR mid-pitch a few years ago...

laura k said...

Any last out will do, as long as it comes before anyone else crosses the plate.

Dr. Jeff said...

Getting tired of all these uncontested steals that lead to runs.

Jake of All Trades said...

Again!

Amy said...

I still hate Papelbon. Just so you know.

laura k said...

WTF WEEI YOU SUCK

Dr. Jeff said...

Getting tired of Pap not mopping up efficiently.

allan said...

Just teasin' the home fans ....

Amy said...

Can we please get one more out without letting them score???

allan said...

No surprise -- there's dirty water in the toilet.

Dr. Jeff said...

Woo hoo! I couldn't handle a loss tonight.

Amy said...

Thank goodness!

Dirty water.

laura k said...

Don't drink the water!

Jake of All Trades said...

Dirty water from echo-y announcers...

Dr. Jeff said...

I nominate that we play that Dylan song "Don't fall apart on me tonight" every time Papelbon comes into the game.

laura k said...

I don't care how efficient it is. We just beat the Yankees in the Stadium.

allan said...

"What about that millionaire with the drumstick in his pants?"

laura k said...

TWSS?

laura k said...

Dirty water from echo-y announcers..

That was crazy. They turn the ads off and Dave O'Brien is broadcasting far away, under water.

Dr. Jeff said...

Thanks Yook!

tim said...

Dirty toilet water indeed. Spent the last couple innings of that game ripping apart the toilet to find a pair of nail clippers in the toilet, clogging the thing.

Tonight's water was as dirty as that job. Good work, sox. Keep it going tmrw and sunday!
