G40: Red Sox 7, Yankees 5

Red Sox - 013 010 110 - 7 8 1
Yankees - 130 000 100 - 5 6 1
David Ortiz's home run to right in the fifth snapped a 4-4 tie, and the Red Sox got an additional run in the seventh on three walks, a stolen base from Dustin Pedroia, and an error on a ground ball between Alex Rodriguez's legs. After the Yankees cut the lead to 6-5, Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered off Joba Chamberlain.

Kevin Youkilis belted a three-run home run in the third, two pitches after it looked like Garcia had struck him out (for the second out of the inning), but umpire Mike Everitt called it a ball.

Lester (6-5-4-4-7, 109) had a rough two innings to start the night (allowing home runs to Andruw Jones and Curtis Granderson in the second) and trailed 4-1, but settled down, allowing only three walks and a single over the next 16 batters.

Before Ortiz hit his home run, he singled and doubled. However, Flo struck out and popped up in his final two plate appearances. An ESPN graphic stated that the last Red Sox batter to hit for the cycle against the Yankees was Patsy Dougherty, way back on July 29, 1903 (when they were known as the Highlanders)! ... Yook and Salty each had a single to go along with their dongs. J.D. Drew walked three times. ... Adrian Gonzalez was 0-for-3, but walked twice (one intentional).
Example
Jon Lester / Freddy Garcia

If the Red Sox win tonight's game, not only will they sweep the weekend series (and hand New York its 9th loss in 12 games), but they will finally reach .500 for the first time this season and they will match the Yankees' win total (20).

Last night, after striking out and grounding out twice against CC Sabathia, Adrian Gonzalez told Terry Francona: "I'm going to give it a little Ichiro and leak a little bit." What Gonzalez meant was that he would open his front shoulder early, to give him a better chance at putting his bat on an inside pitch.
When a pitcher's beating me in, it's something I do to create a little room inside and make sure I don't miss fastballs in. He was just pounding me in and I wasn't picking up the ball well, swinging at pitches I don't normally swing at. It would be dumb of me to go up there and try the same approach again, you know? ... I've got to try something different. What's the worst that can happen? I make another out again?
Sabathia threw ball one, then Gonzalez pounded a 94-mph fastball into the right field seats to double the Red Sox's lead to 6-0. Five of his nine home runs this season have come on 1-0 counts.

In April, Evil Bert hit one home run and drove in 15 runs. In May, he has eight home runs and 19 RBI -- and the month is not yet half over. He has a long way to go to match the AL record for RBI in May (43), set by Ty Cobb in 1925.

AL East: Orioles 9, Rays 3 (preview) and Blue Jays 11, Twins 3 (Bautista hit 3 dongs) (preview).

FY helps Iglesias get some dinner:

We make him carry the beer and water on the bus. The usual rookie stuff. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The other night when he played in the late innings, he made that great tag play in extra innings, but the guy was safe and we lost.

I saw him back at the hotel and he asked me if I was going to go and eat and I told him I ate in the clubhouse after the game. He said he didn’t eat in the clubhouse. He told me, "I didn’t think I could eat because we lost." I said, "Well, just order room service," and he said, "I don’t know how."

So he came to my room and we ordered him a club sandwich and chicken wings and soup and cheesecake. He ate the whole thing, sitting in front of my TV, watching highlights, and he was afraid they were going to show his play and blame him for losing the game.

I’m just trying to make him as comfortable as possible. He’s a good guy and he’s going to be fun.

****

Possible motivation for later in the season: No food if the team loses.

That HR that Gonzalez hit was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen a hitter do. What he did in Toronto was equally as amazing. My son, being a lefty, will learn so much from watching from adjust from at bat to at bat.

Especially for the fact he looked so silly the first time, to make that adjustment, something you very rarley hitters do during the course of a game, when was the last time you seen Drew or Papi adjust like that against a lefty..

He truly is a gifted hitter.

I think the Posada stuff is being blown just a wee bit out of proportion. The guy on ESPN literally said, "You do not take yourself out of the lineup. That was wrong. That is something he's going to have to live with the rest of his life." Read that last sentence twice to let it set in.

Great family weekend so far. My brother and his family came up from Atlanta. Our daughter graduated from college today. The rain held off for the ceremonies. Two consecutive days of Schadenfruede.

A MFY sweep would make it perfect.

GO SOX!

allan said...

That was Bobby Valentine, wasn't it?

BV said YOU DO NOT ASK OUT OF THE LINEUP and then went all Kramer-on-Regis and said (not quite verbatim) that advice was also for all the kids out there.

Kathryn said...

My son just said, "All right, time to get some NESN announcers."

allan said...

They are missing pitches (2 and counting) to show the bleacher assholes chanting.

allan said...

almost burned gardner again.

Maxwell Horse said...

The ESPN idiocy is already making me wistfully pine for yesterday's Fox broadcast.

Jere said...

ESPN get off the fucking air! Showing the fucking gorilla shit-brained fuckwads and their dickery MISSING ENTIRE pitches because of it!

allan said...

well, that's all the espn sound i can tolerate for tonight ....

9casey said...

It will hurt Posada the same way it hurt Nomar......

He looks like a baby and after watching him talk to press last night , he really seemed to be miffed at Cashman the most, but to have your wife tweeting during the game about some bogus back issue, thats just absurd. He didn't tell the training staff. But he went to a chriropactor, really .........

Jere said...

At least with NESN it's just a glitch--ESPN just proved they actually don't give a shit.

Kathryn said...

We now have WEEI running through the mlb app on the iPhone.

I don't like it when the Sox batters swing at pitches outside the strike zone. Don't they know they're not supposed to do that? Someone should tell them.

I enjoy the constant text crawl on the bottom of the screen that ESPN's got going. It doesn't detract at all from the game I'm trying to watch. And it's not like I can access the internet to find out any scores I'd like. Waiting for the specific statistic I'm interested in to randomly pop up on screen is a much better system.

Amy said...

Should have scored more runs ...

RedSoxDiehard said...

Crap. I wish they'd put Posada back in the lineup already.

Kathryn said...

Enough already with the Posada stuff. I see the iso on Posada in the dugout and feel fortunate that I am not listening to ESPN and then DO starts talking about it on EEI. Enough.

Maxwell Horse said...

Okay, 2 outs. Maybe Lester can get out of this with minimal ... nevermind.

Lester and Garcia each threw 27 pitches in their 3-RA innings.

allan said...

DiMaggio and the Yankees played an exhibition game between either games 10/11 or 11/12 of the streak. He did not get a hit.

Also, in reading about the streak, there were several times when a clear error in the late innings was ruled a hit. (Of course, instant replay and Sportscenter did not exist to examine every AB.)

Jere said...

not 5 for 6, 6 for 8. in two games, not one. (Bobby V botching the end of Ted's .406 season.)

allan said...

if you're going to bring it up and talk about it, at least have your facts handy. why is that too much to ask of espn? they are often as lame as stoners on a public access show.

Jere said...

maybe if carl doesn't hesitate after hitting the ball he beats it out. maybe.

Maxwell Horse said...

This Ortho Home Defense Max ad is the only good-looking commercial on air anymore.

Yee ha! Loving this. I've been absent a lot due to hanging out with someone that seems to be pretty special. Tonight she called to say she was fixing shrimp and grits and did I want tp come over. Of course I said yes. On the way over I called with 3 questions - A Do we need anything from the store ; B - Should I stop and return this movie we rented the other day ; C - Uhhh, do ypu really like baseball?
I got here and the game was on, she updated me on the score, (it was 4-1 Yankees) and said "it's OK, the Sox have 2 on and somebody good (Yook) is batting". I think I like her even mpre now!
The 2nd pitch I saw was Yook HR.
And now Papi has given us the lead! God it doesn't get any better

nick said...

That bat is shattered, huh.

Awaiting the epic Papi triple.

allan said...

Sounds like an ideal evening, Tim.

nick said...

I get ESPN on my basic cable, so two, two games in a row on TV. and sure enough I don't make it through an inning before I start kvetching about their yapping. Emma points out I should come here to complain with you all. Sure enough, some epic kvetches here.

Jere said...

couldn't see where the ball landed because of their giant graphic. Why don't they take it away as soon as the ball is hit?

allan said...

So Emma doesn't wanna hear it, and suggests complaining online.

allan said...

showing the game is secondary to making sure the ads and promos get on-screen.

allan said...

after his last start and the first 2 innings tonight, it's nice to see lester settle down and pitch well.

Jere said...

and nice to see him hold the lead there after he got it

nick said...

She wisely knew there'd be a crew of ya with similar thoughts ('cept I was swearing less).

Kathryn said...

Emma is amazing. Gotta love that girl.

SoSock said...

Maxwell Horse - I agree that it's iritating as well when you're actually interested in what is on the screen. And now they're showing "the longest home runs of the week". WTF!
But when you're in non-Sox country like I am, it's nice to be at the bar and be able to watch for an occasional update. Although you are right about the interminable wait for the 1 score you actually want to see

Benjamin said...

BABIP's a bitch.

I don't have kids, but I think you maybe failing as a father...

Kathryn said...

She may grow to love it. I became a sports fan because that was how I could hang out with my dad and brothers on Sundays.

Amy said...

SoSock---I have missed you, but glad to hear you have been absent for such a good reason! :)

Kathryn said...

Thank you, Amy & Nick. It was an incredible weekend.

C'mon Sox, make it complete.

nick said...

allan said...
I think you maybe failing as a father...

There is that distinct possibility. I have to figure how to get her to apply her math geekery to this, then...

She does seem to possess healthy doses of empathy...even for Yankees fans. I'll take that for now.

Jere said...

that doesn't quite have enough, gardner

allan said...

i'm sure you're doing fine!

Kathryn said...

Well, just ask Allan...there is plenty of opportunity to apply math geekery to baseball.

Kathryn said...

I should rephrase that...I became a sports fan *because* I hung out with my father and brothers on Sundays.

SoSock said...

Wheels!

Jere said...

"And you see the shortstop just give up on that throw, not getting the ball right at the bag just in case the runner overslides or something....you'd never see Derek JETER do that."

I'm ready for some sweaty repetition.

Benjamin said...

A-ROD!

Jere said...

wow that was pretty damn sweet

RedSoxDiehard said...

Thank you Slappy!!!!!!

Kathryn said...

EEEEEEE-Rod.

RedSoxDiehard said...

C'mon, Papi, let's see that triple!

Especially because these dumbasses act like he's never hit one.

Jere said...

oh god, these guys have no idea. "Ortiz has 16 triples INCLUDING ONE THIS YEAR." They obviously don't know about the STREAK.

Kathryn said...

Was Papi helping FY there? He should have been giving him the standup signal.

That's the 26th error by the yankees this year. Hmmm, if they get 2 more, does Girardi have to change his uniform to 29?

Jere said...

Girardi should change his number to Prick

Kathryn said...

Don't worry Girardi, your incessant complaining about CORRECT calls will eventually buy you one.

That's not really much of a change...

Hi thread, I'm home a little early from work so I can make my only thread appearance of the weekend.

laura k said...

Dear Rogers, fuck you very much for not showing this game tonight.

SoSock said...

Boo. Gotta take advantage o those miscues. Altho at the rate they're going, the Yankees will probably make a couple more.

HI AMY! Long time no talk to

Kathryn said...

Laura, how can they not show the game? Is it not on ESPN in Canada?

Jere said...

i love it--Bobby V calls the Yankee fans dull and then they cut to several shots of texting fans.

allan said...

yankees fans very quiet. it's like they have interalized their misfortune against boston and they KNOW they cannot come back. they fully expect to lose.

Jere said...

luxury boxes have neither mystique nor aura

Kathryn said...

So Robertson walks three and throws a wild pitch to score an UNearned run. Go figure.

Benjamin said...

Check it out: if you draw one line through A-Rod's foot and elbow, and another line through his foot and bicep, the lines have different slopes.

Jere said...

ESPN, throws over to first count as "the game"--supposed to show that. thanks.

Jere said...

Carl's been fucking around all night.

SoSock said...

Bard! By the way, have I mentioned lately - He's a Tarheel!
(I do believe that's the first time I've said that this year)

allan said...

i hope bard has his control tonight

laura k said...

Kathryn, there is no ESPN in Canada. But we usually have the game on a different channel. But not this week!

If we had a better cable package, we would probably have it. Usually we have more than enough cable, but this was not predictable.

laura k said...

SoSock, I don't even thread every night, and I've seen your Tarheel comment at least a few times this season! :)

meunier said...

Bard has all these great stats but whenever I see him he is always giving it up.

allan said...

swisher 0 for 16 with 2 outs and rats (longest 0fer in MLB)

Kathryn said...

Hmm, I figured that ESPN was so almighty and powerful that they were EVERYWHERE.

allan said...

i guess the scoreboard has not told the fans in the first few rows to cheer

Amy said...

Come on, Bard. Do not give up the lead.

Jere said...

nice job Dan

SoSock, I don't even thread every night, and I've seen your Tarheel comment at least a few times this season! :)

Oh well - Guess my memory is going, along with most everything else

laura k said...

ESPN is just in the US. There's an ESPN International, but I think it just broadcasts big US sporting events in non-US countries.

allan said...

joba time!

Kathryn said...

I'm packing it in for the night. I'll listen to the rest in bed.

Night All.

SoSock said...

Crawford does NOT attone :(

meunier said...

Why is Joba always throwing at Youk anyways?

Jere said...

So I remember Crawford reaching down for that ball with the bare hand, and next thing you know, the run's scoring. But they never showed the fumble on a replay. (Terrible.) I went back and looked, and I don't see how he could have missed that ball, OR how it could have gotten so far away since it was rolling so slowly. Would have liked to see a replay of it but they had to show a pre-planned thing about Cano and Pedroia instead.

Benjamin said...

Saltaladongia

SALTY DONG!!!!

SALTY DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Allan, did you see the article in the NYTimes today about the 1918 WS?

SALTY!!

nick said...

Salty dong!

meunier said...

First homer from a Sox C this year!

SoSock said...

Is that a home run by a Bston catcher? I think hell just froze over

Dr. Jeff said...

I have to say, I am really enjoying this game. Homers off Joba are particularly satisfying. As are errors by A-Rod.

allan said...

the cunt surrenders a dong ...

nick said...

I clearly need more exclamation points.

laura k said...

I'm enjoying this game too. It's so sweepy.

Benjamin said...

I thought TSN was ESPN's Canadian network. Looks like they sold off most of their stake but retained typography rights for the website.

laura k said...

Exclamation marks are free. You should pick a few up for dongy occasions such as these.

Zenslinger said...

At The Bar.

Salty?!?!?

Jere said...

"Allan, did you see the article in the NYTimes today about the 1918 WS?"

I heard OB talking about it on the broadcast last night. Incredibly, he talked about it like this was the first thing he'd heard the possible fixing of the series.

laura k said...

Benjamin, when I first moved here, I thought TSN was ESPN, too. After all, they have "Sports Centre" (which we pronounce Sports Sentry). But they were actually sold a long time ago.

We don't get them. They're a Rogers competitor so they're not on basic cable.

Jere said...

A guy in a Sox hat was cheering Jorge!

Amy said...

Jorge?

laura k said...

Here goes OBrien with the Posada gossip. Last night he could NOT shut up about it.

Jere said...

Yankee fans unanimously love quitters.

laura k said...

I hate when people talk about a possible 1918 fix and don't credit Allan. It drives me NUTS.

Amy said...

I thought it was a good article, but I knew very little about the whole thing.

SoSock said...

Did that disclaimer just say "accounts and descriptions of this game may not be used or rebroadcast without really pising off NY Yankee fans"?

Amy said...

I know---I read the whole thing, hoping Allan would be mentioned...

laura k said...

Yankee fans SHOULD cheer Posada! For godsakes, why not! If they didn't, they'd be shit - but they're not shit for cheering him.

Benjamin said...

Posada's just happy to be batting in the 7th slot.

Amy said...

Shit.

Well, they finally stopped obsessing about Jeter, so they had to have some new thing to obsess about.

Jere said...

"Here goes OBrien with the Posada gossip. Last night he could NOT shut up about it."

You should have heard Sterling and Suzyn! (I heard them for the 1st half of the game, OB and Joe for the second, since I was driving from NY to N.E. for the duration of the game.)

nick said...

Durnit. I am glad he didn't get a hit. The response to that would have been insufferable.

SoSock said...

The passion? That would be the passion that made him sit last night

allan said...

i printed it out and skimmed it. did not see anything besides the usual info, though.

wait -- i'm talking about the one in the globe. guess i should check the times.

Amy said...

Damn it, Bard!

laura k said...

We have a friend who wrote an amazing book about a racehorse - totally un-noticed book. When the whole Seabiscuit phenom was going on, it drove me nuts for her, too.

Amy said...

Could be the same article since the Times owns the Globe.

allan said...

is dumbo willing to go to first or will he walk off the field in a snit?

laura k said...

I was thinking A and I should try to do some publicity around the upcoming Cubs series, but it's so much work and I'm so busy. I really had to let the idea go.

allan said...

no - different article

laura k said...

I don't think it's the same story. They still employ their own staff, somehow!

laura k said...

Everyone here seems to care about Posada way too much.

allan said...

hmmm, lots of quotes from people.

that one at the end from an SABR vet about a RF throwing the series is particularly ignorant, considering how many fuckups the cubs made (including pitching).

Amy said...

Everyone here? Or there? I don't care at all.

laura k said...

At least write a letter to the ed w/ corrections, they'll run it with "the writer is the author of..." line.

Benjamin said...

Took nine pitches, but alright.

Jere said...

Posada is Nixon to Aceves's Nixon.

laura k said...

The thread - but apparently not everyone. But almost!

Amy said...

OK, that's two.

Yes, from the article I would have concluded that it was one player who caused the Cubs to lose.

I guess I should read your book...

allan said...

I heard OB talking about it on the broadcast last night. Incredibly, he talked about it like this was the first thing he'd heard the possible fixing of the series.

Did he blame Manny?

Amy said...

Thank you, Derek, for making that so fast and painless.

allan said...

Mr. 24!

laura k said...

Another insurance run would be nice.

Amy said...

I need this game to end soon. Too tired!

allan said...

While I would not use the phrase "it drives me nuts", I have similar feelings when I read 1918-related articles. It's not like I'm a recluse.

SoSock said...

Nice Houdini act

laura k said...

Amy, you haven't read Allan's book? We could have brought you an autographed copy at JoS1.

laura k said...

And not like the book is out of print.

Jere said...

By the way, I actually just remembered this part--as OB was beginning his story, he was like "we all know about the 1918 WS with the Black Sox, but there's an article about the 1919 WS...." (something like that, but he reversed the two), and then there was a long pause, in which I imagine someone yelling into his earpiece, "you're fucking up, you're fucking up!". Then after the next pitch he was able to just move on and talk about the article, finally referring to it as 1918.

allan said...
