G45: Cubs 9, Red Sox 3

Cubs - 001 000 080 - 9 9 1
Red Sox - 000 201 000 - 3 9 3
David Ortiz hit a two-run home run - his ninth of the year and 300th in a Boston uniform - and Jacoby Ellsbury knocked in Carl Crawford two innings later. The Red Sox were six outs from a win that would lift them into sole possession of first place in the AL East.

Matt Albers came out for the eighth with a 3-1 lead - and everything went to hell. Albers faced six batters: single, single, walk, walk (3-2), double (3-4), E6. Franklin Morales made his Red Sox debut: double (3-5), K, walk, F9-E5-E7 (3-7), double (3-8), P3.

Marlon Byrd was hit on the left side of his face under his eye with a pitch from Aceves (5-3-1-2-2, 86) in the second inning. Byrd walked off the field with a bloody cut under his eye and was taken to the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he will spent the night.
Example
Carlos Zambrano / Alfredo Aceves

The uniforms both teams will wear tonight will be similar to the ones worn during the 1918 season. Many teams, including the Red Sox, have worn replica uniforms over the last few decades, but I'm especially excited to see the Red Sox wearing 1918 uniforms.

After years of imagining Red Sox players wearing the white shirt, white pants, and white hats -- no lettering, no "B"*, no names, no numbers, no nothing! -- at Fenway Park, I am actually going to see a game played with them! (On the left, we have a photo from 2000 of your faithful correspondent, modeling the white 1918 cap. I ordered it while in Cooperstown on one of my first research trips (1995 or 1996). At that time, there were no big companies selling replica shirts and caps. This was a small company - and the cap was sewn by hand! If I recall correctly, it took about a month until I received it. (Photo credit: Laura.))

The Red Sox began using numbers in 1931, two years after the Yankees and Cleveland began doing it.

Here is a open letter published in one of the Boston newspapers in January 1918 by a "great admirer" of the Red Sox:
I suggest that the Sox have some kind of lettering on the shirtfront of their play-at-home uniforms this season instead of nothing at all, as it is at present.

I think a great many fans from out of town, happening to see the Sox play for the first time, would hardly know the home team if they appeared on the field first. Another thing I notice is that the Sox are the only team in the league without some kind of lettering on their shirtfront. ... I suppose I'll get a good bit of criticism for making a suggestion as foolish as this appears to be, but I'll wager a good many fans would like to see the Sox uniforms lettered, at that. ...

Hoping that the Red Sox win the flag this year, and that you will not be bored reading this, I remain,

Yours truly,

Joseph E. Kelley
Their home uniform pants of the late teens (or at least one of those years) may have had very thin blue pinstripes. In 1999, Barry Halper put his massive memorabilia collection up for auction, and I snagged a pair of pitcher Carl Mays's uniform pants from his Boston years (1915-19). Those pants have very light blue pinstripes. (The Red Sox road uniforms had "RED SOX" across the chest.)

The Red Sox issued a statement about tonight's uniforms:
The Red Sox home uniform will be a blank button-up with no lettering and a slight off-white or ivory color. The hat will also have a blank off-white tint, and the socks will be a three-part white/red/white composition. The Red Sox used this uniform and hat combination as their primary home look for most of the 1910s, and did not have any lettering on the front of their uniform for the bulk of that decade and the entire 1920s. The team did not wear the familiar blue cap with a red "B" until the early 1930s.

The Cubs will wear navy blue pinstripes and lettering on a grayish uniform. On the front left-hand side of the uniform, there will be a horizontal outline of a "C" enclosing "UBS" in smaller, navy blue letters. The Cubs will sport a five-part sock with grey, blue, white, blue and grey color sections. The road hat will have a navy blue bill and pinstripes (but no "C" or any other lettering on the cap). The Cubs used this uniform for only one season, as they changed their road uniforms on an almost-yearly basis during the 1910s. ...

There are also plans for additional elements of the Saturday pre-game ceremony and game presentation that will be reminiscent of the fans' experience in 1918.
I have read rumours that this may mean no public address announcements or blaring pop music and commercials for several innings! If that happens, my fervent hope is that so many people love the quiet -- because it heightens the intensity of the game -- and they demand that it be done all game, every game. (Alas, there is probably a greater chance Judgment Day actually arrives before the first pitch.)

Or it could mean front office employees will go through the stands confiscating (by force, if necessary) foul balls for re-use, or fans will get soda in easy-to-throw glass bottles, or only white-skinned players will be able to play. .. So many options to choose from!

Extra Bases, post-game:
It was the first game between the two teams at Fenway Park. They played three games at Wrigley Field in 2005. ... E-Cafardo.

AL East: Rays/Marlins at 4 PM and Mets/Yankees at 7 PM.

I have said this before but Cafardo is pathetically bad at what he does. Errors like the one you posted happen almost daily with him. How is that okay?

In a SoSh thread dedicated to documenting his horrific writing and second-grade-level analysis, someone said that his job is as secure as Supreme Court judge's job. I cannot remember why, but they cannot simply ship him off to the glue factory.

Our Fox network is showing the MFY game. But, my son says he can make it work. Something about having his phone think he is in England, getting the broadcast that way, and running it through the TV? I don't know, I just hope it works.

I noticed Craig Calcaterra at Hardball Talk made the same mistake as Carfardo (referring to Friday's game as the first time they two teams have played since 1918).

Actually, you will probably see the familiar red "B" when the Sox are batting and wearing helmets. I observed the same situation during a Braves / Phillies Civil Rights era (circa 1944 Negro leagues uniforms) game last week from Atlanta.

allan said...

Hey - it's supposed to be 1918!

NO HELMETS!

wayneswhirld said...

Actually you'll probably find Sox players wearing the familiar red "B" while batting with a helmet. I watched a Braves / Phillies game last week for Civil Rights day (circa 1944 Negro League uniforms) in Atlanta, where players went "unauthentic" while batting.

allan said...

Fuck. I can't get any game.

Kathryn said...

My son just made it happen! We are watching FOX on our TV through mlb.tv on his phone! Allan, he says he will try to get you up and running. He is thinking as I type.

RedSoxDiehard said...

Oh no, they have numbers on the backs!

allan said...

Castig says they are wearing numbers.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Kathryn said...

Allan, do you get mlb.tv on your phone?

allan said...

I don't have a phone.

Kathryn said...

Here is a link to the game:

Sorry, no time to set up the link thingy on blogger.

Philip said...

Um, Fox broadcast saying Sox started 1 - 0, which was the last time they led the division. Wut?

Kathryn said...

BOOO to the numbers.

Kathryn said...

The socks don't look the same either.

allan said...

are they doing no PA or music?

i fear this game is blacked out on mlbtv.

allan said...

K: thanks but "server not found"

Philip said...

I hear PA on the Fox broadcast.

allan said...

on hold with mlb; i thought io hear a recording that said this game was nationally blacked out. SO FUCKED UP

Kathryn said...

Allan, try going to ilemi.eu. Then click on the first Sox/Cubs gamelink. See what happens. I get it on my computer.

Kathryn said...

Allan, it is nationally blacked out.

Kathryn said...

RedSoxDiehard said...

Also their socks are solid red, not white with the stripe.

Dr. Jeff said...

I'm blacked out, they are showing Rangers-Phillies. Very pissed.

Kathryn said...

Allan, did you try the ilemi.eu site?

allan said...

first link - server not available

second link - says check back in a few minutes

Kathryn said...

Then click on the other game option. One of them is up and running now.

Kathryn said...

allan said...

i think i need a plug-in, but would not be able to d/l anything at work.

allan said...

the plugin link (assuming it is not an ad) is an exe file.

looks like i'm well fucked.

Kathryn said...

I'm not ready to give up yet. I get the plug in windows too, but underneath one and above the other is a box with an "ad will close in x seconds" Let that run through and the game starts. I hope!!!

Dr. Jeff said...

The ilemi link is working for me on a Mac using Safari. Martini + edamame for the first few innings.

allan said...

i let it run and that's when i get the "server not found" message.

allan said...

there was a good site called athde or something, but it no longer exists.

Kathryn said...

Crap. I'll ask Jonathan if he has any other ideas for you.

I am totally with you on the MLB rant. It makes no sense.

He is working on it now. Silly boy, he would rather do that than watch the game.

Ah, we're getting the old-fashioned baseball experience. . . for one inning.

Dr. Jeff said...

Allan, how many umpires did they use in 1918?

Kathryn said...

No PA announcer/music for the third inning to recreate 1918. Why can't they do it the whole game?

Allen - I'm a Phillies fan (born and raised in Philly) living in Vermont (since '98) - Bristol to be exact, of course near Burlington. I work once a week in Barre at a weekly newspaper as a graphic artist. They are all crazy Red Sox fans. So I finally thought I'd search a good non-newspaper Sox site and found your blog. Good thing I'm not a Yankees fan. For me, all they say is the National League is the inferior league (but they rooted for the Phils in the '09 WS against the Skankees). Anyway, I'm pissed tonight too cause I get MLB TV and it's all blacked out like yours. I want to see the Phillies Rangers on my Internet TV. But the ironic part is, I can see Fox if I want and it's......Cubs Red Sox. I did peak in on it before running back to my computer to listen to audio of my game. Sure enough, the Sox are wearing the helmets with red "B". Another thing, I'm 63, born in '48 and you'll be 48 this fall, born in '63. A little karma maybe? Go Sox, GO PHILLIES!

Dr. Jeff said...

I want to see a graph of all the teams from which we have received players in trades. Obv. would be an American league bias, but curious how the distribution would be among the divisions, and whether there are teams that we rarely trade with (MFY?).

Maybe look at the data since Theo came on board. Guess I'm asking Allan if he is willing to look this up.

Kathryn said...

Allan, did you know that WS game 1 in 1918 was the first time the Star Spangled Banner was played? They just gave us that tidbit on FOX. I'm guessing you already know this, but if not...

Dr. Jeff said...

They should all be wearing shoes from 1918...

Dr. Jeff said...

Hey Allan. This is Jonny, Kathryn's son. I've been working for the past few innings trying to find a solution for you to watch the game.

After examining the source of the ILEMI.eu page my mom linked to earlier, I've found the streaming service and channel ID they're using.

First, try using this link: meevos.tv/asdasvasva

If that doesn't work then please speak up; I do have a few other ideas.

allan said...

.... went to make a cup of tea and i miss seeing papi's dong.

allan said...

jonny: i get a "server not found" message with this:

Kathryn said...

I have a two questions, Allan.

- If it's convenient, could I get a screenshot of that error message?

- What browser/OS are you using?

allan said...

email me at joyofsox at gmail and i'll email a pic back.

allan said...

mfy lead cut to 4-3 in 6th

Kathryn said...

I'll do that. As a bandaid, you can use this (choppy) stream I created:

www.ustream.tv/channel/baseballforallan

allan said...

HOLY SHIT! it works! choppy but things are moving! time to mute OB.

nick said...

Had a late Saturday nap, turned on the TV and...Yankees. Stupid Time Warner! The Berkshires are not in New York state...not one inch of 'em.

Which would be followed by an MLB.TV rant, but you all had that already. If they play the radio with commercials, they should play TV w/ commercials. numbnuts.

allan said...

i'll still need gdgd for accuracy of pitches (yes, i am keeping score at work), but THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathryn said...

No problem man. I'm really hoping to get you a better stream though. Just sent you an email.

Kathryn said...

Okay, I'm back (Kathryn, not Jonny).

Nick, use the ILEMI link.

allan said...

there was a mini-brawl during game 2 of the 18 WS in chicago. a red sox coach went into the cubs dugout to fight a cubs coach, they were rolling around on the muddy dugout floor. by the time sox players ran over to help out (one was carrying a bat with him), it was over.

Maxwell Horse said...

The Cubs manager, the way he screamed "two to one" after Youk got hit ... can't imagine Francona doing that.

Kathryn said...

Papi is the 5th player to hit 300 dongs with the Red Sox, joining Rice, Yaz, Lynn, and Williams.

Kathryn said...

I posted that BEFORE the graphic on FOX.

How does the pitcher lose track of the outs?

allan said...

the bills on the sox caps are too big (/nitpicking)

Kathryn said...

RedSoxDiehard said...

Wow, the wind knocked that one down nicely.

Kathryn said...

nick said...

Thanks Kathryn and Johnny. Nice to see the uniforms in actions. I'm still surly wrt Time Warner.

Kathryn said...

Allan, just how many things can you do at one time??

Bitch at MLB on the phone, monitor posts, look up stats, score the game, and oh yeah, work.

Although you did miss Papi's dong. For what, a sip of Tang?

Kathryn said...

Love the strike 'em out, throw 'em out!!!

allan said...

Bitch at MLB on the phone, monitor posts, look up stats, score the game, and oh yeah, work.

No work since the game started, MLB was the one call at the start, not looking up any stats (am I?), so it's just keep score and mod.

but there are multiple windows to keep track of: mod dashboard, gmail, jos thread, gdgd and the video feed.

Maxwell Horse said...

Those etrade talking baby commercials might make me not want to commit a murder if they didn't go with that hideous CGI "baby geniuses" moving-mouth approach. If they just had a voice-over a la "Look Who's Talking," it might not be awful.

Kathryn said...

It's not stats, but you are keeping us up on other scores...and you knew the number of umpires in 1918. If you didn't have to look that up, I bow down!

allan said...

i could not tell you when they went from 1 ump to 2 or from 2 to 4, but 2 umps during that year? that's like someone asking you how many balls in a walk?

Kathryn said...

Silly me. Of course it is.

Kathryn said...

LBJ!!!!!!! Much needed run.

allan said...

i should note, also, that laura usually mods during the week - so comments do not back up while i am scribbling or typing a witty reply.

allan said...

so what are you guys going to do next week when there is no jos for FIVE straight games? :>)

Kathryn said...

Five days??? That's a long time. I guess we'll find a way to survive **sigh**. Is this your trip to Detroit? How many games are you going to see?

allan said...

Only one game in Detroit, the Thursday afternoon game. But we are driving out on Wednesday, then we both took the weekend off to attend a Marxism conference in Toronto (FSS).

Maybe Tim or Rob can fire up the AltSite.

Kathryn said...

Whoever these knucklehead announcers are, they are taking full advantage of their air time. THEY HAVE NOT SHUT UP.

Kathryn said...

That dry bat produced a wicked spin!

Kathryn said...

Okay, I'm tired of FOX stepping on my lines.

9casey said...

Kat thank Jonny for me this is better than no game at all.......but this still blows I live in New England and 150 bucks a month for cable and I can't watch the Red Sox on my TV.

Kathryn said...

And Evil Kenevil makes his way to the mound.

9casey said...

Allan, do you realy like this uni's or just the nostalgia?

allan said...

with the EI cable package and the ability to watch sporting events on computers and other devices, the regional blackout seems like an outdated relic.

Kathryn said...

9C, he says you should be mad.

9casey said...

Didn't the blackout used to be based on attendance of the game?

I don't understand blacking out the audience who actually watch it.

And I have 2 fox channels, they could have easily but both games on.

allan said...

it's neat to see for personal reasons. with modifications to the caps and socks, and the numbers, these seem like a "based on a true story" uniform. not totally factual, but the jist is there.

Kathryn said...

We got rid of Comcast a few months ago. We got the basic Dish Network programming and watch other stuff on netflix or the computer. MLB is streamed through apple TV or PS3. We are saving about $80 a month.

And it won't be long before TV broadcasting in obsolete.

9casey said...

Kat , I got over it ....thank God he is a tech wiz, just don't tell me he's 10.......:)

nick said...

I like the blank uniforms. It's not like we don't know which team is which and the excess of ads, and visual business, the white space of the uniforms really stands out.

I saw a report on twitter that the shirts are so thin they could read the writing on the undershirt. I did notice they were thin on the arms.

Were the unis wool back in 1918?

9casey said...

Allan, I hear ya .....but they are awful.

Is everyday Danny not available?

allan said...

we have the lowest level that will allow us to add on the sports package for april-september. if i could rig up something decent that could run mlbtv thru our tv -- and the bandwidth charges didn't bankrupt us -- i'd be tempted to ditch the tv altogether. use mlbtv for baseball and watch movies in the winter.

Kathryn said...

No, he'll be 18 in a few weeks.

The weekend blackouts are all about money. Fox & ESPN pay mlb a lot of money for exclusive rights to these games.

Allan, did you ever think you'd actually see a team in these uniforms?

allan said...

they do seem thin and see-through. more like a plain button down white shirt.

yes, wool. which must have been a joy to wear going first to third when it was 105 degrees!

allan said...

i never really thought about it, so i guess no.

i'm thinking if the sox sell these white caps, they might not do so well.

and they might look better in b&w.

allan said...

outs, gentlemen, pls

RedSoxDiehard said...

What is going on?

Kathryn said...

Neither one worked yesterday.

nick said...

now who's throwing a game?

allan said...

the uniforms do look like white flags.

Dr. Jeff said...

pathetic

Maxwell Horse said...

I know it's a cliche to question Francona when bad things happen, but seriously, Albers has been out there a LONG time and been doing horribly a long time. There is no reason not to have anyone at least warming up by the time the Cubs took the lead. It was clear that Albers was struggling.

9casey said...

Bard did not pitch yesterday

allan said...

Kathryn said...

Funny, I can't imagine how long it will take GDGD to figure out how to call that!!

Kathryn said...

What's the final count on that inning?

3 errors, 8 runs, how many hits, walks?

I guess we will be able to surpass that 10:43 total game time for the weekend.

We won't see these uniforms again until 2018. At least.

So LBJ's ball is close to the line. Announcers talk about how it needs a closer look. Alas, no camera angle that can show us anything. Then they get a close up of dirt on the line and what great analysis do we get?

"hmmm"

Great national broadcast there.

I would think that if, 80 years from now, you go back and study the write-ups of this last inning, you could think it was fixed.

I will settle for six this inning.

Dr. Jeff said...

OK, but we WILL return to first place!

nick said...

with 2 outs, those 6 look less likely.

Let's get 'em tomorrow.

Good night guys (and gals).

with 3 outs, EXTREMELY unlikely.

so: wake in the rubber game ....

nick said...

Holy crap. I was following the thread from work (can see but can't comment) and listening on the MLB Audio. I left work in the 7th, 3-1, came home expecting to see our 8th straight win. Yeesh!

this still blows I live in New England and 150 bucks a month for cable and I can't watch the Red Sox on my TV.

It is utterly, utterly WRONG.

if i could rig up something decent that could run mlbtv thru our tv -- and the bandwidth charges didn't bankrupt us

The first is possible, the second is not. We actually could not get enough bandwidth to watch all the games on our computer - not just couldn't pay for it, couldn't GET it. Crazy but true.

So all of CT and even western Mass don't get the game on Fox, and all people without TV access miss it too. Great job, MLB!

Here are my pics, only the pre-game ones for now, since it's 3 AM.

Hell of an 8th inning, eh? One thing nobody mentioned in this thread is the weather--shortly after the game started, this cloud that had been looming engulfed the ballpark. The game was played in a cloud. You could see it going by. It was never raining, but moisture was forming on everything. Weird.
