White Sox - 041 104 000 - 10 15 0 Red Sox - 001 000 042 - 7 12 1Chicago pounded Aceves (5-8-8-3-1, 78) for five hits, two walks, and five runs in a two-inning span of 11 batters, and Scott Atchison allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth and then gave up two runs of his own, as the White Sox put the game out of reach.
After being silenced for most of the night by Humber (7.2-9-4-1-5, 97), Boston mounted a valiant effort in the final two innings. David Ortiz's three-run homer to left was the big blow in the eighth, and Drew Sutton contributed RBI hits in both the eighth and ninth. Jason Varitek homered in the third and finished the night with three hits and two runs scored.
Philip Humber / Alfredo Aceves
Mr. Potato Head makes his third start for the Red Sox. In the previous two, against the Cubs and Tigers, he has pitched 11 innings, allowing eight hits, four walks, 3 HBP, but only two runs. Aceves would prefer to start, but what's most important to him is the chance to play for a World Series winner. "I'm a pitcher - that's what I do. It doesn't matter if I'm a reliever or a starter."
In nine starts this year, Humber has a 2.64 ERA. He has pitched at least seven innings in five of his last six outings, allowing more than two runs only once in that period. Tonight's previously scheduled starter, Gavin Floyd, was used in Chicago's extra-inning loss on Saturday, so Ozzie Guillen decided to push Floyd back one day to tomorrow, and move Humber up.
AL East: Rangers/Rays at 6:30 PM and Yankees/Athletics at 10 PM.

In a nine-inning game, a baseball team had:
14 hits;
1 home run;
4 walks;
2 stolen bases; and
a hit with a runner in scoring position.
How many runs did the team score?

Answer.
It is kind of crazy here. We installed a new digital thermostat today, and hot air is pouring out of the central A/C.
We have NESN. I hope Allan can settle in to enjoy it.
last night's game began with a 3 pitch K, too.
EQUIDISTANT!
but i deleted it from bingo!
"last night's game began with a 3 pitch K, too."
At least he took the bat off his shoulder tonight.
Thought we might get a triple play after Drew caught that. I was off by two outs.
Which gamethreader says Drew never successfully slides? Nice catch.
Should be out of this inning
Laura, I was the person who said it seemed like whenever Drew slides or dives, he never catches it. Well, I saw him do it today!
Oh yeah, MH! That slide was for you. :)
Things never seem to go well against the White Sox.
Uhh I dont think we have a LR right now..
Oh they are using Atchinson.
Carl Crawford makes some great plays but he sure has bobbled the ball a lot on ones that are just slowly rolling to him.

"Things never seem to go well against the White Sox."
Yet we somehow have beaten them 50.9% of the time! (58.8% at home.) What luck....
So Bruins-Canucks starts tonight? In Vancouver?
Any HVAC experts threading tonight? I texted a friend who could help, but I don't know if he's around.
didn't we make headlines by scoring 10+ runs against the white sox in four straight games a few years ago?
PHIL HUMBER IS PITCHING A PERFECT GAME
don falling in love with "rangy play".
CACTUS DONG!!!!!
Love seeing the outfielder's back...
CACTUS PRICKS THE PERFECT GAME BUBBLE!!!
That old jinx worked well.
Bruins-Canucks starts in Vancouver tomorrow at 5 eastern; tomorrow's Red Sox game has been moved to a 1:35 start.
tomorrow was always a day game. sox considering changing saturday's game to the afternoon, i believe.
Moving Saturday's game to 1 could be done because Fox's games don't start until 4 this Saturday.
Who the hell is this guy?
Mark, you're a new fan? :)
I don't see the owner in the media at all since moving to the west coast.
Moving Saturday's game to 1 HAS been done.
And never that guy its always the skinny creepy one.
Just joking. Lucchino is kinda well known.
nesn trivia question mentions members of the "2006 white sox world series champions".
ummmm .......
Well that inning fizzled pretty quickly.
SInce Don and Jerry can't seem to explain this for the life of them, I'll do it. Carl took a left after he touched second (went toward third, inadvertently or not). Then went straight back to first without retouching second on his way back. It wasn't about WHEN the catch was, Jerry, and Jesus H. Christ Don, it has nothing to do with what part of the bag he touched.
Can anyone more up on the rules explain what just happened to Carl Crawford to me? Why would he have to tag a base he's leaving when he's not supposed to be on it in the first place (if the ball in play is an out, he has to return to his base, as I understand it), if he touched it? I don't understand how it even makes sense that he has to tag a bag he is leaving.
Doesn't matter if "he's not supposed to be on it in the first place". Since the ball is still in play, he has to retrace his steps, which means touching the base, just like if he was running around second towards third, and had to race back. Has to retouch second.
ought to be a PB.
and it is, now.
Did he pass second base? what makes it so that he was going to third in the first place? the way it looked to me, he got up, turned around and went back to 1st. Maybe I didn't see it right, but what made him "going to third?"
lackey vs norfolk
5.2-3-1-0-4
allowed a solo home run
63 pitches, 46 strikes
so if he can always face AAA teams ....
Damnit, Francona! How long are you going to leave Lester out there? It's been 15 innings! Can't you see he's got nothing!
Here's the rule:
7.10 Any runner shall be called out, on appeal, when—
[omitting part [a]]
(b) With the ball in play, while advancing or returning to a base, he fails to touch each
base in order before he, or a missed base, is tagged.
maybe that really *is* dave attell on the mound.
don: "red sox tack on four more runs..."
I understand the rule, what part of what he did made him going to third base???
Thats the part I'm foggy about. Because he turned left? Because he passed the line that runs between home and second base? Because he went past the bag? Is it defined somewhere as to what technically counts as "advancing to the next base", inadvertently or not?
This has gotten ugly
Tough lefty tomorrow, I hope we don't get swept.
just touching second base, then coming off the base, i think. he has to retouch it on his way back.
TEX - 001 000 2
FKR - 001 000 2
Jeremy--I explained it right before your first comment. He hit the bag and took a left turn, toward third. (Again, he may not have intended to do this, but that's where he went.) So at this point, he's now "past" second base. And needs to hit second again on his way back to first.
It's not like he slid in, then went back. He slid in, made a weird move that was definitely not a move back toward first which took him off the bag, meaning past it. And then he went straight to first with no re-touch.
looks like that missed being a dong by 1/10 of an inch,
aw...wanted the 1 Unassisted DP
jenks should have kept running to first for the unassisted DP!
great nerds nerd alike
unmarried nerds!
FLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
okay we're halfway to 10....
The Sox may not win this game, but that homerun was still enjoyable.
OH, MAN!!!!!!
Big Papi LOVES flashing his dong.
TEX - 001 000 210 - 4 7 0
FKR - 001 000 22x - 5 5 2
And after 1,885 games and eight and a half innings, it's the Red Sox 8,142, and the White Sox 7,982. A commanding lead.
Could they have picked a less convincing "average guy" inner-monlogue voice for the onscreen actors in those Verizon commercials? Was the trailer voice-over guy not available? What about James Earl Jones?
that's how you start a 6-run rally against a nazi.
i was just gonna say--it's our old pal with the iron cross
We now lead Chicago by 151 runs all-time. Tack on!
Tek!!!
still alive!
don claiming a fan touched it - should be a HR!
dude that fan's in the second row... so i don't know if he could reach out that far, it's close. If he reached out over to touch, no HR.
ALL CIRCUS
NO CATCH
And then they show the guy grinning all proudly because he almost got the ball.
wait--Don, dude, if he reached over but the guy WASN'T gonna catch it, it's just a fan interference double...
if we get the tying run to the plate, oh my...
remember, this is don and jerry's first game at fenway - they are a bit green on the ground rules.
freakin' Beltran
ump pulls the plug on our rally.
At least the Sox made it entertaining. I honestly would rather this almost comeback than have a laugher that makes you question every aspect of the team.
Oh well. At least they came alive at the end. And yay Tek!
Effin Yanks up 10-3, Coco is the A's last hope. And he ends it. And the camera cuts to Jeter immediately. And it's the Oakland feed. And Jeter didn't do shit in this game except hit three grounders to second base and somehow reach on all of them.
