Orioles - 000 030 000 - 3 8 1 Red Sox - 800 001 01x - 10 11 0The Orioles finally got fed up with the Red Sox teeing off on their entire pitching staff for the last two nights. After Kevin Gregg gave up a run-scoring triple to Josh Reddick that pushed Boston's run total to 10, he threw three inside pitches to David Ortiz. Two of them were very inside; after the first one, Flo just glared, but after ball 3, he walked out towards the mound, pointing his finger at Gregg and yelling.
Both benches and pens emptied and order was quickly restored, with warnings being issued. Ortiz swung at the 3-0 pitch and popped out to short right-center. As he went down the line, Gregg yelled at him (to run faster?) and gestured with his glove. As home plate umpire Mike Estabrook was jogging out and immediately ejecting Gregg, Ortiz turned and sprinted to the mound and the two big men (Gregg is listed at 6-6, 230) took several swings at each other.
Ortiz and Gregg were ejected, of course, along with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Orioles reliever Jim Johnson, both of whom were out in the bullpens when the action began.
Also, Beckett (5-7-3-2-3, 68) was pulled after five innings for precautionary reasons. The Red Sox said he has a mildly hyperextended left knee. During his fifth and last inning, Beckett had on-going trouble with the landing area on the mound, and ended up allowing three hits, two walks (to Baltimore's #8 and #9 hitters), and three runs.
The Orioles have lost five straight games and have allowed 10+ runs in four of the five losses.

Alex Speier, WEEI:
In 2011, [Jacoby Ellsbury] has seen his diverse skill set come together in extraordinary fashion, in a year when he has assumed his place as one of the best players in the game. ...AL East: Rays/Yankees at 7 PM.
He understands his swing, understands the pitches he can damage, and he is crushing the ball with a consistency that he has never previously displayed. ... In his last six games, he is now 13-for-27 (.481), getting on base and stealing bags in the fashion of an ideal leadoff hitter yet hammering the ball with the authority of a middle-of-the-order masher.

Why is it McDonald over Reddick?
"Manager's decision."
PeteAbe answers the Reddick Q:
"Before you start complaining about the lineup, be advised that lefties are hitting .213/.269/.306 against Britton and righties .270/.334/.372. It's also worth noting that the Sox have a team OPS of .802 and the next highest in baseball is the Yankees at .786. Complaining about the lineup is really, really silly at this point."
He adds: "The Sox have won seven of eight and ... lead the New York Jeters by a half-game in the standings."
Rays/Yankees, PPD
That orioles baseball patch on their unis looks silly.
stupid jones.
Hi, thread. I'm watching w/o the keyboard tonight. See you briefly for exciting things.
PAPI IS THE BEST!!!!
Oh my.
Last night I got home late and read halfway through the thread before getting some phone calls and never ended up posting. So the following is completely belated commentary...
But in case you guys haven't had a chance to see the moment that sent Don and Jerry into snorts, squeals, and giggles, video was posted at Over the Monster: here.
Also, I keep my laptop on a tray table in front of the couch. Just the right height!
Now back to your regularly-scheduled thread....
Stuff like that!!!!
Large paternal dong!
Oh, and back on topic for today:
VERY GONE!
Tiz starting the Derby a few days early.
(The one out this inning was a shot into the triangle.)
Large Dad, Large Dong
Thanks for the link, RSD! And the couch/table update. :>)
THIS I like!
My girlfriend is an O's fan. I love this crap! She's thinking of converting.
Life is good ... when you're UNSTOPPABLE.
6-0 and there's only one out in the game.
^ Inning. Not game.
Still.
She's thinking of converting.
Smart girl.
MAKE TITO APOLOGIZE!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait a sec, didn't I say I wasn't threading tonight? See you all later. :)
Say, has Beckett been waiting long?
I've missed it all due to an emergency call from my father-in-law. All is well but we are still down here. Six runs?? I'll have to go back and look at it.
No future for you, Britton
BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!! Their starter didn't get 3 outs. BAHAHHAHA.
I'm going to Sunday's game, and wearing out their bullpen bodes well for the next two games.
No future for you, Britton
... in Showalter's drrrrrrreamin'!
Remy says 1st time an opposing starter did not finish the 1st inning this year vs Sox.
This is good, since we will lose tomorrow.
This is revenge for the last 7/8/11 game we played against this franchise. (5-2 Browns victory.)
Don said "1 inning pitched", but that's not true. I know if a pitcher doesn't get out of, say, the 2nd inning, then he went 1+ innings. What do you say when he doesn't get out of the 1st?
5:45pm
"Complaining about the lineup is really, really silly at this point."
Indeed.
That Hits before the ASG is dumb, because it is not the same # of games for the various players. Someone could have 81 games, while Bert will have 89.
In 1924, we also knocked their starter (Urban Shocker) out in the first inning of a July 8th game at Fenway Park. We led 7-0 in that game, but lost 8-7.
Red Sox strand a pair!
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
52 pitches by the Os.
In 1924, we also knocked their starter (Urban Shocker) out in the first inning of a July 8th game at Fenway Park. We led 7-0 in that game, but lost 8-7.
That's why you NEVER STOP SCORING RUNS. Fuck the unwritten rules.
What do you say when he doesn't get out of the 1st?
Well, Patrick said: "BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!! Their starter didn't get 3 outs. BAHAHHAHA."
two outs in a row for the sox.
wtf is this shit?
Urban Shocker, one of the all-time great baseball names. Or any names!
Great band name.
Pitches
Britton (.2 innings) - 42
Beckett (4 innings) - 40
So the answer is .2 inning, I guess.
Or BWAHAHAHAHAHA.
Kat,I hope your father in law is ok. And thank Jonny for the tips on scrolling!
RSDH I bought a laptop tray thing today to keep the heat off me.
Go Sox!
How can you have an All-Star Game without CI?
I write "0+" in my scorecard for guys who face at least one batter but don't get any outs.
But I like "BWAHAHAHAHAHA" better. Tough to fit it in the little box, though.
Hey Amy. We are back home and watching the game. All is fine. I tried to follow Jon's bookmarklet instructions but it didn't work. I really just want my laptop back.
Lee
1st pitch double
1st pitch home run
hmmmmm ...
NM.
GDGD says Lee donged an 0-1 pitch.
This? Not funny. Do not hurt yourself, Josh!!!
I love runs, but we've gotta get through the 5th.
wtf beckett?
Looks like he's got a touch of Brittonitis.
Lackey watching Beckett, thinking about blaming the mound when he pitches like shit tomorrow.
Glad to hear that, Kat.
I like "BWAHAHAHAHAHA" better. Tough to fit it in the little box, though.
Yes, that's the problem with high-scoring games.
albers in
Please no DL for Beckett...
Up by 5 after 5, I vote precautionary (though I did not see a lot of Beckett last inning). Remy leans towards precautionary, too, it sounds like.
More fireworks! FY!
FUCK YEAH
FUCK YEAH
Cleanup hitter batting 2nd!
Precautionary is fine. I just cannot bear the thought of another starter on the DL.
Jakubauskas's line:

Hyperextended knee?
There's your F-bomb, and then there's your FY-bomb!
Radio guys said Beckett has hyper-extended knee.
Wow. I know folks around here like to keep tabs on when NESN misses the first pitch of an inninng. On my station they cut back to the game right after an entire batter had been struck out.
If it was McDonald, that was 7 pitches!
Globe says mildly hyperextended knee.
The break is coming at a good time.
Albers:
6 batters, 4 strikeouts
28 pitches, 20 strikes
is it go time?
okay, flo, now drill that shit 500 feet and flip that stick!
IT IS GO TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holy shit!
WTF?
Guy's got to be crazy messing with Ortiz.
What the hell? We are up 7 runs....do we need to risk more injuries?
Pie: "You want a piece of me?" :)
gregg yaks to flo after he hits the ball - ump tosses gregg ASAP then has to hustle to stop flo from pucnhing gregg
nice we get to tee off on this clowns another 5-6 times in the next 2 weeks!!!!
Gregg tossed immediately - of course.
Crazy game. Love that 8 run first. Hope Ortiz doesn't get suspended for any games.
GDGD has Ortiz getting HBP and flying out to CF.....
Idiot pitcher waving at Papi. Papi almost took his head off.
Home plate ump wisely gets out of the way.
some serious swings from tiz.
and once they start, the home plate ump quickly backs away!!!!!
Tito looking calm.
Wow, never knew Papi had that kind of temper. Always seems like such a teddy bear.
(Insert here my usual riff on how I hate the fighting.)
well, gregg did throw at ortiz 3 times. and flo was quite pissed at the first one, so ...
remy notes bot and lackey getting involved.
go fuck yourself, buck.
heh - tiz hiding out in the dugout as the ump talks to tito.
baltimore bringing in the HR-serving machine from last night!
Yeah, he wasn't pushing and shoving, he was swinging away. Not something you see every day!
Oh here comes our friend Pedro Viola, he of misleading name.
It's good for a teddy bear to show his teeth once in a while, especially when the pitcher is such an a'hole.
salty also ejected.
SalTALA tossed too
jim johnson (balt reliever) also ejected.
Why was Salty ejected?
I am sure Bot and Lackey love any opportunity to get into a brawl.
I understand Papi's anger. Just don't like the physical stuff.
I'd like to see what Salty and Johnson did.
i guess he was in the fray.
always hilarious to see both pens during a brawl. they all run into the infield and then start in. why don't they just fight it out in the outfield?
Good gawd!
nesn back early - and don is trying to figure ou why the field is clear.
That was a lot more than Bot and Lackey. Some players you like might enjoy fighting too. :)
Tito seems a bit amused by the whole thing!
How do you score that, the runner abandoning the bag?
And the brawl caused the 3rd out! Good thing we're up by so many runs.
Pretty ho-hum stuff!
Yeah, the bullpen always looks so lame jogging in.
OK, I admit that I LOVED seeing Tek smash his glove over ARod's face years back.
if reddick is out for abandoning the bag, ending the inning, why did the umpires wait 20 minutes to call it, while baltimore brought in a pitcher to warm up?
shouldn't it be kind of obvious reddick left the bag?
...
atchison in.
Tito seems a bit amused by the whole thing!
I think everyone is amused but you.
Although now that I said that, I'm sure others will tell me that they were also not amused. :)
I mentioned only Bot and Lackey because Orsillo made a point of singling them out.
gregg took a big right swing at ortiz before ortiz tried to counter with the left.
I admit to some amusement. SHHHH.
But I would think Tito would show annoyance at least outwardly that his players were ejected and that the third out was caused by the brawl. At least OUTWARDLY.
Fighting Pie
Oh sorry, I missed that from Don & Jerry!
Seriously, is it like an unassisted out?
Or are there asterisks involved somehow?
we've seen tito get so hot, we feared for his heart and health. probably better if he plays it cool.
GDGD has it as a DP, 8-2.
Ah-ha! Don't worry, Amy, your secret is safe with us.
How can Salty be tossed if he's not even in the game?
Why is Reddick out for "abandoning third base"? Is that even a thing?
Hanging out on the patio, cooking some chicken! Listening to the brawl aftermath. Papi!
I'm here listening to the game on the radio and dying to see what happened.
Did any swings connect?
Guys on the bench have been ejected before, for bitching to the umps, etc. Maybe Salty and Johnson got into it, but where, I don't know.
Red Sox having some punch with their Pie.
Dirty Brawling Water!
Pugnacious Water!
Dirty brawl water!!!!!
I am not amused. I hate the fighting, hate the risk of injury, hate the thought of Papi getting suspended...
but, OK, amused when I hope that Lackey is the one who retaliates tomorrow...
Not sure what if anything connected, but Gregg and Ortiz were swinging for real. None of that lame pushing and shoving and milling about tonight.
Chicken at 10:30, Tim?
DIRTY WATER!!
Patrick, it doesn't look like any swings connected. Gregg swung and missed with his right - then Papi goes with a big uppercut left - and also misses. Both guys swinging and ducking. Papi looked like quite the pugilist - really fast on his feet - and with his fists!
I missed it. Another thing I'll have to catch up on.
Gregg is the worst fighter of all time. I'd guess he was just kind of assuming a whole bunch of guys would pile on but it took longer than he thought, so he was just kind of bobbing around--did throw one weak punch that didn't even reach Papi's face.
"Pie: "You want a piece of me?" :)"
I said that to Kim while it was going on--I gave proper credit to Allan of course!
And what's this abandoning third crap? Call it a dead ball and put the guy back on third. What was he supposed to do? The fielders aren't punished for "abandoning" their positions. I feel like as soon as everything goes haywire, you gotta stop everything, why should just the runner be penalized for EVERYONE running in to fight?
If that's really the rule, any time the winning run's about to score, just start pounding on the third base coach or something--the runner will have to "abandon" the base to go get involved in the fight, and he'll be called out, and you've saved the game!
And another thing--when figuring out that crazy play, Remy actually suggested a force out! On a fly out! With no force situation anyway!
In this Tito press conference, somebody said that Gregg said his motioning was actually pointing up so his fielders knew the ball was in the air. I can't believe he'd actually try pretend he wasn't motioning to Papi.
What rule would the umps be citing for the base abandonment?
The box score has this:
Outfield assists: Jones, Ad (Reddick at home).
Gregg is totally full of shit on the postgame. He says he barked and gestured at Ortiz when Ortiz was going to first, because Gregg feels there are "ethics" to the game. Meaning he was supposedly so offended that Ortiz wasn't running hard to first on an obvious fly out he had to vocally correct Ortiz on the right way to play. That's all he was doing. Just making sure guys run hard to first.
sitions. I feel like as soon as everything goes haywire, you gotta stop everything, why should just the runner be penalized for EVERYONE running in to fight?
So ... two on, no outs. Batter pops out and charges the mound. Hilarity ensues. Is it a triple play?
Gregg: " ...and their 180 million payroll ..."
It sounds like that entire team has been taught to have a chip on its shoulder. And you just know that if (when) Lackey gets shelled tomorrow, Orioles people will be all puffed up like the brawl energized their team and it's proof that they're not going to take "it" anymore.
I would like to hear the abuse Gregg gets if he warms up this weekend. The CF fans are like 5-10 feet away from him. I'll bet it will be highly entertaining.
From SoSH Game Thread:
"MASN postgame fucks applauding Gregg, say Boston has thrown at Baltimore for years and Boston deserves this and Ortiz had nothing to complain about on an inside pitch."
That would be Gary Thorne.
SoSH:
Gregg postgame on MASN: He (Ortiz) whines too much. You have to ask David what he was thinking. It is 3-0 and and you're up 7 runs and he didn't run out a lazy fly ball. I told him he should. If he has a problem with me saying he should run he has bigger issues to deal with.
***
Gregg just dropped "180 million payroll" during his postgame tirade, LOL. Rice going off on Gregg now.
***
Now that clown Gregg says in the interview "Ortiz should run the bases" - So it's HIS place to tell him to run it out??? The REAL crux of the matter comes out as he then says "They think they're better than we are". That's what's bugging him - He knows the Sox ARE better and it pisses him off.
***
I guess Showalter gives his players talking points about whining about Boston's payroll.
Damn! Puny little Scutaro right in the middle!
What rule would the umps be citing for the base abandonment?
It looks to me like it falls under rule 7.08.a.2: "Any runner is out when...after touching first base, he leaves the baseline, obviously abandoning his effort to touch the next base;"
I think this rule means that a fielder doesn't have to chase a runner back to the dugout to tag him -- the umpire can simply rule that the runner has abandoned the pursuit of the next base and rule him out even though he wasn't tagged.
I watched the replay. I don't know what Gregg said but it was more than what he is claiming. The umpire throws him out as Papi is running toward first. So whatever he said was enough to get him tossed before papi charged him.
L, Jay says the Pie quote is the funniest thing he has heard in awhile...and he's a funny dude.
SoSHer: "Hoolian Aceves is hysterical sprinting in from the bullpen on the second go-round... trying to make eye contact with an O all the way in. He's definitely not all there."
I look forward to seeing that on a replay later tonight.
Hey Gregg, you're seven runs down and you're worried about somebody running hard? I'd say *you* have bigger issues to deal with.
ESPN's Joe McDonald: Red Sox players were watching Gregg interview in clubhouse and were not happy about it.
A McDonald tweet: "Ortiz popped up and Gregg started to yell at him to get in the dugout. Papi charged at him, benches cleared again. This one wasn't a joke."
That was fun..... Gregg was really honest in his interview. He is an ass but he was honset......
And the yankees are making a farce out of the ASG it was allready a farce but they have taken it to another level.
Jeter backs out, A-rod backs out, Mo backs out ..They are all playing and not on DL , MLB should make these guys play if not Dl them.....
The original Pie quote was from April 17, 2009. Then I gave Allan credit for it in my post about that game, and JS from Baseball Heavy agreed to its greatness in comments. Good job by Jay also recognizing genius.
(I thought Allan had noted my love of the line somewhere else at the time but I can't find that.)
Oh and yet another thing: Manny misses All-Star Game due to some kind of soreness, and it's "another grandmother died!" We'll see what people say about Jeter, Mo, and A-Rod all claiming injury and missing the game, despite that they're well enough to play in regular games.
I would like to hear the abuse Gregg gets if he warms up this weekend. The CF fans are like 5-10 feet away from him. I'll bet it will be highly entertaining.
Hmm, I'll be 12 rows behind the visitors' pen on Sunday. I probably will hear some interesting stuff.
I remain mystified at the reaction to that quip. It was funny at the time (more than 2 yrs ago?!?!?!?), but ...
"I'll be 12 rows behind the visitors' pen on Sunday."
And I'll be 1 row behind it. When Gregg starts warming!
PeteAbe tweet:
"Beckett says he should be fine not just for 2nd half, but also for All-Star game. Was scared initially, but OK now"
Tomorrow is the annual SoSH BaSH game. A very large group of fans will be sitting out near the Orioles bullpen!!
Jay figured out what Reddick should have done...run to home. If the game is still live then he could have scored.
And I'll be 1 row behind it. When Gregg starts warming!
Then I will hear interesting stuff! :)
Jay figured out what Reddick should have done...run to home. If the game is still live then he could have scored.
However, if he tags and runs home, he gets shit from the Os for scoring in the 8th inning of a 10-3 game on a short pop-up ro RCF.
Plus, as Reddick himself said (I think), if he was bluffing or actually tagging, once he saw Ortiz charge the mound, there's a clear protocol to protect/help your teammates in that situation.
I thought maybe the thing that Showalter was so red-faced about was getting the umps to call Reddick out. I have not found any quotes, though. But if Showalter knew that the inning should be over, why did he have Viola come in and start warming up? (And shouldn't one of the four umpires have known the rule and not waited 15 minutes to make the call?)
That comment was made in jest at how ridiculous the call was. Jere is right. If a fight doesn't stop play and the game is still live then do what you can to draw the guy off the base to get the third out and end the game. I have trouble believing that the game was still live, that's all.
