Doubront (6-4-1-3-7, 99) pitched extremely well, but after he was pulled (at the right time), the roof fell in. And the walls collapsed. Then the whole fucking pile of house caught fire and burned out of control.
David Ortiz and Jarrod Saltalamacchia each had four hits.
Freddy Garcia / Felix Doubront
If it feels like forever since the Red Sox began a regular season with a bunch of wins, that's because it has. You have to go back to 2006 to find a Boston team that was winning "right out of the gate" (© Don Orsillo).
Records End of April 2012 - 1-5, 4-9 2011 - 0-6, 2-10 11-15 2010 - 1-3, 4-9 11-12 2009 - 2-6 14- 8 2008 - 3-4, 5-6 17-12 2007 - 2-3 16- 8 2006 - 6-1, 11-4 14-11In 2007 and 2008, they hung around .500 for a while before finishing the first month with a winning record. In 2009, they started 2-6 before winning 11 consecutive games.
The Red Sox have a league-average offense, but they have scored three or fewer runs in seven of their 13 games. That low level of production will not get you a winning record. ... Since 2001, the Yankees have played 31 April games at Fenway Park, with a 9-22 record.
David Ortiz:
We've got the talent. We just need to execute. You're not going to spend the whole season just thinking about the talent that we have. We have to win games. We have to provide the opportunity to win games. I know that in everybody's mind it's the beginning of the season or whatever. But what's it going to take, until July for us to start winning? We need to step up and do something different and make things happen.
The Red Sox are discussing a trade with the Cubs for OF Marlon Byrd.

ReplyDeleteWill Middlebrooks hitting .395/.435/.837/1.272 with six homers and 19 RBI in his last 10 games.
Mark Melancon pitched an inning, striking out two and allowing a single; he threw only 11 pitches (8 strikes).
Repko with a "slight" shoulder separation from his Wall collision.

If you are moving Sweeney up, then don't have Aviles leading off. Why move the best hitters down a notch? Keep Pedroia at 2, EB at 3, etc.

ReplyDeleteThis bullpen is a festival of suck.
ReplyDelete"SoSH suggests "Deck Chair" as a nickname."
ReplyDeleteVery appropriate.
I'd love to think this is the regular-season equivalent of how we felt after this game, and much of the following night. But it's hard to believe a miracle is waiting.
You know how we always say "it only counts as one loss". I think this one counted as two or three.
Jeez I wonder if I should skip seeing the Sox in Miami if the season is going to go like this..
ReplyDeletealexspeier: BV said that this is 'a psychological situation.'
ReplyDeletecafardo: John Henry and Ben Cherington in Bobby Valentine's office after game.

ReplyDeleteIt was like he was desperate to get to a batter he thought Aceves could put out.
Today's game was a complete disgrace.
ReplyDeleteThe Red Sox now have the worst ever bullpen ERA I can figure. The previous worst was the 2007 Rays at 6.16. The Sox were at 6.13 before today's game.
ReplyDeleteMy optimism is fading.
ReplyDeleteI assume Bard will be in bullpen by next weeks end and Cook will be in rotation. Crawford will be back and Bryd will be there . Wouldnt be suprised if Middlebrooks was called up to..
ReplyDeletePete Abe was tweeting they shouldnt play sweet caroline between innings and when they did he said someone should get fired....really Pete, the fans dont play, sweet caroline isnt for the players it is for the fans..
ReplyDeleteAwful loss, but it is April. I dont know how but they will right the ship..
With the twins, white sox, A's, orioles, royals, indians, and mariners as our opponents for the next 22 games. We should have a good grasp on wheter all is lost or not after those games.
So chin up Sox fans, we've been in worse places...
Cafardo on NESN Daily just a few minutes ago. The weather's supposed to be terrible here tomorrow (flood warnings for most of eastern MA) and he speculates that with a rainout they skip Bard, have Lester make the start as scheduled against the Twins, and "take the opportunity" to move Bard back to the bullpen. Also describes the Byrd trade as a "no-brainer".
ReplyDeleteThanks for that, 9C. It's good when encouragement comes from someone other than the known cheerleaders.
ReplyDeleteJeez I wonder if I should skip seeing the Sox in Miami if the season is going to go like this..
ReplyDeleteI hope you're joking, or having a momentary lapse of reason. If you have a chance to see your team on the road, you take it!
Unless, of course, you only support them in fair weather.

I'm here for you L...... The thing that gets me though... Is the fans at Fenway taking the easy road and Booing Bobby V.. He has a roster, right now, made up of some has beens and never will bees. Some of moves are questionable but someone has to get an out.
The front office has to take a look in the mirror.. I really think some of these players are fragile, and with BV telling them hit rock bottom, you know he wanted to tell them you all suck.. Throw a couple of fits , fuck it, Bobby has to be Bobby, whether that is good or bad or not, Shit, I don't know. I believe he is gun shy with this group and worried about losing them... Well man up Bobby and be Bobby..at this point they may need it..

ReplyDeleteAnd I was in the bleachers for both games, with the same friend both times.
So how often has a team scored 7 in two straight innings? How often has a team been up 9 and down 6 in the same game--what's the biggest "swing" of all time?
Well, I can't stand BV but I can't see how this game and several other losses were his fault. You can second guess a manager all day long. If your pitchers can't get outs, it doesn't matter what the manager does. (Unless he can pitch?!)
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't take Bill James to tell us WE HAVE NO BULLPEN. Bobby can't make one materialize.
This week I will be in NY with my sister the NYY fan. Could be worse, it could have been during this series. She's all excited about the Jets getting Tebow. Maybe I will change the subject to football!
