2004 Starting Rotation

This was posted at SoSH yesterday and is shared here just because.

Derek Lowe, Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez, Bronson Arroyo, and Tim Wakefield started 157 of Boston's 162 regular season games in 2004.

Can anyone guess who made the other five starts ... without looking at B-Ref or anything?

Hint(?): The five starts were made by three guys.

One was Kim. I don't know how to spell his first name, and I can't look it up without breaking the rules. Starts with a B. Two-part name.

One was another Pedro. Can't dredge his last name out of my memory.

That's all I got.

That is amazingly good!

Byung-Hyun Kim started 3 games.
Pedro _______ started 1 game.
_____________ started 1 game.

Astacio?

Astacio, yes!

I just looked it up so I won't say anymore. And thank you! Perhaps it was mentioned in the DLUWT manuscript so I had a refresher.

Is it someone who was a reliever on the Sox 25-man WS roster?

allan said...

Nope, not in DLUWT.

The third guy's first and last name each begin with the same letter.

No. This was this guy's only appearance in the bigs in 2004. Major league debut, actually!

I was at the doubleheader with Abe Alvarez's debut against Baltimore at Fenway with my friend Pat. I think it was a day-night but we definitely saw at least the Abe game with his crooked hat. It's funny everyone got the other ones because this was the only one I knew! (Unless I'm wrong and this was '05 or something....)

Good trivia, I know who it was but completely forgot about BY Kim....
This blog post really reminds me how much karma there was with that team....down 3 love but win one game and the perfect storm of starting/ shutdown pitching was all lined up.

Amazing really....and the perfect way to end the alleged "curse"

And by everyone, you mean almost no one. :)

Ha. Okay I admit, once I saw it became a quiz, I kind of skimmed just looking for the word Alvarez to make sure it wasn't said already before I said it. What's also funny/cool is that I came to comments to say something like "I know one was Abe Alvarez since I saw it live, but who were the others???" So it was convenient that it had already turned into a quiz, with the one uncovered answer being the one I came to say! A small victory.... which is one more than Abe Alvarez got :(

July 22 - two days before the Brawl Game. Bellhorn and Mueller batted 1-2 in Alvarez's game.

No idea where this photo came from originally. I had never seen it before it was posted at SoSH. If I had known about it a month or two ago, I might have pushed to have it included in DLUWT.

I love looking at those faces again. What happy days!

And wow, Pedro REALLY was small!

I remember Kim. The others are gone with the wind. And I never would have come up with Kim myself.

The earliest copy I can find is the one tweeted by Blue Sky Entertainment & Sports (an athlete/celebrity marketing firm).

Look at how young they look, especially Pedro. Wow. It really has been ten years.

That's the first thing I thought, too!

When I think what has happened in my own life since that time, I realize how long ago it was. I imagine many of us feel that way.
