G146: Orioles 10, Red Sox 6

Orioles - 006 020 002 - 10 15 0
Red Sox - 000 000 105 - 6 8 1
I tuned in to NESN during the bottom of the ninth inning to hear some wisdom from analyst Steve Lyons. He was apparently talking about the excessive length of baseball games and he proposed a great suggestion to "speed the game up". Umpires should "call more strikes". Apparently, Lyons believes umpires should call more strikes no matter where the pitched ball is in relation to the strike zone defined by the rule book. Doing so would "force batters to swing the bat" - and games would go faster.

That's the level of analysis you get on NESN.

This loss also officially eliminated the Red Sox from all playoff contention. ... Wait 'til next year!

The Sox must win seven of their last 16 in order to better their record from 2012.

Of course, now they must go on the road and play their next four against KC, who is in a battle with the Tigers for the AL Central crown.

Then they will play three in Pittsburgh with a team that holds one of two wild card spots and is 4.5 games out of first place in the NL Central.

As distant as 2012 appeared after winning the World Series last season, 2013 seems just as distant right now.

Dan Butler is 1st Red Sox to end a no-hit bid in the 6th or later with 1st ML hit since Cecil Cooper vs Joe Coleman, 9/11/71 (per @EliasSports).

How the hell do you search for something like that?

From Elias: The Orioles scored 10 runs at Fenway Park despite none of their players scoring more than one run. In the last 50 years, the only other time Baltimore scored at least 10 runs in a game without any O's player scoring more than once was a 10-5 victory at Safeco Field in August 2008.
