Pedroia Will Have Left Hand Surgery On Thursday

Dustin Pedroia, bothered for most of the season by inflammation in his left hand and wrist, will have surgery tomorrow in Boston. Why the Red Sox continued playing Pedroia at second base for weeks of meaningless games before having this problem properly taken care of is a mystery.

ESPNBoston notes: "This will be the third successive year in which Pedroia will have had surgery for a hand injury. In addition to repairing his ulnar collateral ligament last November, Pedroia had a pin inserted into his right pinkie finger in October 2012."

If I had to guess, it's because Pedroia would rather risk further injury than appear "soft."

I want to see Betts get a few reps at 2B - just to keep everyone on their toes.

I'm sure you're right. But that's why it shouldn't be up to him. The team should have put him on the DL and had it taken care of.

Hope he heals up, and stops having hand issues. I'd hate to see hand problems be his down fall.

I agree 100% with you, Laura, but he also has to be open and honest with the team about the extent of the injury.

Either way, hopefully he should have time enough to recouperate and prepare for next season when the Sox win a fourth championship in the new century. ;-)
