MLB All-Star Game Should Adopt World Baseball Classic’s Extra-Innings Rules
Marc Normandin, SB Nation
July 12, 2017
The All-Star Game should employ the World Baseball Classic's rules for extra innings, putting runners in scoring position to start those additional frames, so that the chances of scoring go way up. ...

Just get right to it in the 10th: Put runners on second and first when extras begin, and see who can take advantage first and best.

I don't bothering watching the ASG any more but this is still ten kinds of wrong.

It's also a slippery slope to possibly one day actually having shit like this in games that mean something.

Anybody see the Silverman article where he says the Red Sox aren't tall enough? It's reached that point.

Why not? This is more interesting than a 16 inning snooze fest that blows your bullpen

This is so foreign to me, it might as well be in another language.

It would be VERY interesting to have a fan from the stands placed on third base and see if he or she can steal home, doesn't mean you have to do it.

I'm all for 11 innings but have always felt that when you get to the 12th inning the managers are digging deep in to their middle relievers, the defensive replacements dominate the lineup and fatigue sets in. Maybe that's exciting for some, but I'd rather see some high leverage situations - talk about drama!

It's because of Judge, isn't it?

Further to: "This is so foreign to me, it might as well be in another language."

Shit, I want EVERY GAME to go at least 16 innings!

What is really wrong with extra innings? FREE BASEBALL, people... and if the game makes you snooze, then consider MMA or some other short-attention span sport.

Ha Ha! Spoken like a true baseball junkie!

It sounds like you want to watch some game other than baseball. This is how baseball is played. If it bores you, you can always go do something else.

There are already to many games as it is, why do we need exorbitant extra innings as well? "How the game is played" is based on the rules- rules which have changed and will continue to change to make the game better and more exciting.

If that rule ever came to pass, I would probably stop watching baseball. Or maybe I would watch the game through X innings and hope someone scored, but when the bullshit started, turn it off.

It is as dumb as shortening games to seven innings or changing walks to 3 balls and strikeouts to 2 strikes. I have seen both of these offered as actual serious possibilities.

MLB has rules ON THE BOOKS RIGHT NOW that would increase pace of play - and yet they ignore them and do little pointless shit like eliminate intentional walk pitches. ENFORCE THE RULES YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE!!!!!

I'm all for enforcing the pace of play rules. I don't think the time of game is as much issue as lack of action is an issue. Perhaps they go hand in hand to some degree. I'm glad to see home runs up and more scoring.

I'm going to side with Laura on this one. It sounds like you don't actually like baseball very much. (Or you want some arena-football-styled version of it.)

From the Vined Smithy said...

"I'd rather see some high leverage situations - talk about drama!"

I don't understand. The current version of extra innings is the definition of high leverage. Every run is enormous and could mean the end of the game in the bottom half.

laura k said...

lack of action is an issue.

Vined Smithy nails it.

This is why people who don't really like baseball, or watch it very casually, prefer high-scoring games with a lot of so-called action, meaning home runs and scoring. And generally people who love baseball find nothing more exciting than a 1-0 win. There is so much tension! Every pitch is high drama.

By the "action" standard, no-hitters and perfect games are boring!

allan said...

Hey, so how was the game?

It was so boring. The other pitcher just kept throwing the ball past the batters. They kept swinging and missing all day. Nothing happened.

I'm watching the game right now. It's in the 15th. Fenway is still packed, noisy, tense. The drama is incessant.

A Yankees-Red Sox game 1-0 in the 15th. It's awesome.

Why is this even a question?? Why is it even being discussed?
