With three weeks until Opening Day, the annual W/L contest should be posted in the next few days. Any suggestions for possible tiebreakers?

The results of the 2009 Bloggies -- which I pestered you about in late January -- will (finally) be announced tonight.

Jeff at Sox and Pinstripes is petitioning to have Jeff Bailey on the Opening Day roster instead of Brad Wilkerson. One of Theo Epstein's finest attributes as a GM is his complete disregard for fan sentiment, but if you're a Gumball fan, click here.

  1. For a tiebreaker: How many games will Mike Lowell play? How many HRs will David Ortiz hit? How many starts will AJ Burnett miss because of his DL stints?

  2. These were my first ideas:

How many bases will Jacoby Ellsbury steal?

In case of a further tie:
How many innings (including the post-season) will John Smoltz pitch for Boston?

  3. Tertiary tiebreaker: day Jason Bay signs a contract extension.

  4. Ellsbury single, Lowrie double. 1-0 us against Halladay.

  5. Bailey with a petition dong. 2-0 Sox.

(And Jays radio has no commercials. They're not talking during breaks, but you can hear general stadium noise. I'm really hoping for some cursing. This is kinda cool--I can hear the warmup pitches hitting the catcher's glove.)

  6. Jere's new boy Justin gives it right back on a double and a dong, 2-2 in inning 2.

  7. Lowrie hits the George Bell foul pole* for an opposite field dong. 3-2 us.

*I just named it that now.

  8. Meanwhile, over there....

It's nice to know there are some tiebreakers we don't have to worry about.

  9. Near-dong for Bard. Double off wall. 6 hits in 2+ innings off Halladay so far.

  10. How about Tim Wakefield's ERA+?

  11. I would just go with Jason Bay's OPS to build off last year, but I'm unimaginative.

How about: difference between Jason Bay's and Manny's OPS?

  12. Couple quick suggestions...

    -Fuck Yeah's OPS+
    -Papelbon Ks
-4-6-3 Double Plays (this one requires a bit of due diligence)

  13. How any doubles will Lowrie belt!

  14. Bummer about the Bloggies loss. Should we commence complaining that bicycling isn't a sport, or do you prefer your vitriol sensible and grounded in reality rather than unthinking prejudice?

So this is how I find out ..........

  16. Oh, that is such bullshit.

    ...

Maybe if everyone reading this had gone over there and voted, I'd be a bit happier right now. ... Shit.

    ...

Ah, the Bloggies are stupid anyway.

  17. If it's any consolation, in pretty much every category where I know something about the nominees, I see the winner is pretty terrible. I mean, really, icanhascheezburger as best humor blog? And best food blog goes to a blog about pictures of silly cakes, instead of a blog about, say, cooking? Good job, internet, you're every bit as dumb as your reputation suggests!

  18. So you are saying that if the world of bloggers was only given two choices, your blog or the bloggies page, more people picked you over the bloggies. That sounds like a win.

  19. Geez, the Bloggies, that was so long ago.

LBJ SBs or Lowrie 2Bs sound good. But there's something cool about this

How about: difference between Jason Bay's and Manny's OPS?

I guess because it keeps Manny in our picture.

  20. I wonder if we could find out at the end of the season how many times instant replay was used in MLB and use that as a tiebreak.

  21. Heh, sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If the popularity contest had been run during the season instead of in deepest darkest winter, then you'd probably have double the fanbase.

  22. Happy Feast of Saint Patrick, JoS! I will be celebrating it in the most traditional of student manners, starting the day with a traditional university "Water Buffalo Club" Cold Shot (google it, Americans!) party at 11am....damn this is gonna be treacherous.

But in Tim fashion, I'll be getting a nice Guinness Irish Stew going in the slow cooker for the day, in oh, about...6 hours.

Well time for some sleep before the day of destruction!

  23. That bloggies outcome is horseshit. Still, it's just an honor to be nominated, sharing the screen with Meryl Streep was incredible, you just feel blessed to be here, etc, right?

Still, if it was held in April you would have taken it.

I always think that when the Canadian awards are held -- in December! Though I have done pretty well anyway. I'd rather have them in September or October.
