ALDS 3: Red Sox 9, Angels 1

RED SOX SWEEP ALDS!
Red Sox - 000 200 070 - 9 10 0
Angels - 000 000 001 - 1 8 0
Schilling was superb (7-6-0-1-4, 100).

Ortiz and Manny hit back-to-back home runs to start the fourth.

After Schilling got out of a small jam in the 7th, Boston sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the eighth: Lugo walked, Pedroia doubled to left (3-0), Youkilis hit a sac fly to center (4-0), Ortiz singled to left, Manny walked and Ellsbury pinch-ran, Lowell doubled to left (5-0), Drew hit into a FC, no out (6-0), Varitek doubled to left center (7-0), Crisp singled to center (9-0), Lugo popped to first, and Pedroia grounded into a FC at second.

ALCS 1 is Friday at Fenway!

***

Curt Schilling (3.87, 118 ERA+) / Jered Weaver (3.91, 111 ERA+)

Manny Ramirez: "Even when you don't feel good and you get hits, like I said, you're a bad man."

Dustin Pedroia's left shoulder seems fine. He took batting practice on Saturday. Terry Francona: "He's fine. Actually, we expected him to be a little more tender than he was."

"TOWERING pop fly to left."

Add that to his total of "foul home runs".

Ofer said...

Shit. If the two first batters make outs, how will Passedballa GIDP?

Rob said...

It depends on what happens, I think, Tim. If the Yankees win today, there's a good chance you give them some momentum that may or may not be able to stopped. The '04 Red Sox factor, perhaps.

So there's that one aspect. But having a game tomorrow night would be terrific. The problem is seeing the Yankees win tonight. I don't want to see that. So depending on how it plays out, I won't mind either way. I'd rather the Yankees get swept, though.

That would be amazing.

3 full days of No Baseball will not be amazing.

Rob said...

That was an impressive fly ball though from A-Rod. Lofton could have made a sandwhich before catching that ball.

Sarah Haendler said...

Win this game 65-0.

You have such low expectations. Sheesh.

s1c said...

RS has it nailed - Sweeeeeeep (besides it will really, really, po the in-laws).

Yo, Cleveland, More FRAGGING RUNS PLEASE!!

nixon33 said...

yeah, i'd like to see a demoralizing sweep as well

allan said...

I guess it would be 65-1.

Sarah Haendler said...

The TBS guys are talking about who might pitch for the Yankees tomorrow.

No one. That's who's pitching for the Yankees tomorrow!

tim said...

Pro - Red Sox sweep
Con - Next game will be with McMoron.

tim said...

It depends on what happens, I think, Tim.

Huh?

I, uh, am also in favor of a sweep. Actually rooting for more days w/o baseball - got a fucking hard exam coming up on Friday and need all the studying I can get.

And I do think that if MFY take this one, they won't be stopped this series. I don't have confidence in Byrd and I think if they can tie up the series, they'll get to Sabathia in G5.

Rob said...

Cano wanted nothing to do with that hot shot from Hafner. TBS showed Torre in the dugout closing his eyes and looking at the ground.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: I really like Joe Torre - it's just a shame that he is managing the Yankees and not another team.

Maybe he will manage elsewhere next year? Year after? Anyone see him managing anywhere else at all? Any guesses?

s1c said...

Ish - I don't see Torre managing any where next year. I think he will be in Hawaii sipping Mai Tai's.

allan said...

bot 5th

single and double, 2nd and 3rd

Sarah Haendler said...

Well, damn, it'll have to be 65-2 now.

allan said...

stupid damon dong.

5-3 mfy.

Amy said...

How come I come back, score is 3-1, in two minutes after I sit down, score is 4-3? I guess I should leave again.

Amy said...

I mean 5-3. Arggh.

allan said...

that's right, give those losers some hope -- then slam the fucking door and sweep up.

Amy said...

Ish, I like Torre also. If I heard my boss said publicly that he was going to fire me if I lost this game, I think I would be so angry that I would just lose interest. But then, I don't manage a baseball team. Probably a good thing for baseball.

allan said...

CI - another out. average down to .091.

tim said...

Let's fuck these kids up, CLE...Drop a deuce on the chest of Georgie Porgie and complete the Cleveland Steamer Sweep!

Rob said...

It depends on what happens, I think, Tim.

Huh?

I'm not sure if there's an outcome where a team wins but doesn't have a lot of momentum. Not in the playoffs. I guess that's what I meant. There's a difference between winning 8-3 and winning on a walk-off home run by A-Rod or Jeter. Momentum-wise.

Lead-off hit for the Tribe, and here they come again!

Rob said...

Chamberlain in the bullpen.

Sarah Haendler said...

That was a bad five minutes there. Damon dong and our roommate announced that he's going to the airport to pick up his boyfriend, who we find exceptionally annoying.

allan said...

Roger Clemens is hungry.

tim said...

I was just wondering why it was directed at me...

tim said...

This Hughes guy just looks like a sack of douche to me.

tim said...

I love the "OHHHHHHH!" from the crowd on a pitch that dumbo had to JUMP over to get cause it was so far out of the zone.

nixon33 said...

well looks like the indians have to beat joba the cunt again

tim said...

One thing that bugged the hell out of me during the Sox game from the announcers, and they're doing it again...

It was like Vlad up in the 3rd or 4th - "This one at bat could mean the series to the Angels"

He did it a few other times, on ABs that were clearly not THAT important. (i.e. Runner on first, one out - 0-0 game)

And he was just saying that Johnny Damon's HR is going to change the entire landscape of the series.

Rob said...

I was just wondering why it was directed at me...

Ohh. My bad. I was supposed to be directing the answer to Nixon33, but my fingers were being rebellious.

Amy said...

Tim, I commented on that during the Sox game also---in that early inning when the Sox failed to score and the announcer said that would propel the Angels to victory. Balderdash! Obviously...

allan said...

He did it a few other times, on ABs that were clearly not THAT important.

Just trying to get non-fans to keep watching. If they think the game is dull or over, they will turn the channel and the audience for the commercials will shrink.

tim said...

what a bad trhow

s1c said...

Well, I hate to say it, but it looks like Ish will get his wish. Baseball tomorrow.

tim said...

They stuck Reg Chapman on this game? (the name I've given to the sideline reporter, mr. 1972 with his awful hair and crappy suits)

tim said...

for fuck sakes, get your shit together cleveland.

allan said...

down two runs in the 7th ... not a problem.

be nice to hold the chokers here, though,

thatdietcokegirl said...

they are spoiling the 4 team DS sweep right now. c'mon pull yrselves together cleveland.

allan said...

cano - dp pls.

thatdietcokegirl said...

why walk matsui to get to canoe?

Sir Jahmez said...

Well no matter what we're in the ALCS - it would just be extra bragging rights to see the Yankees get swept by Cleveland. Why Trot Why?

Dear MFY,
It's still the 6th inning. You could still blow it.
- Red Sox Nation

allan said...

yo, cleveland, there was going to be some great fucking newspapers for me to see tomorrow and you had to go and fuck it all up.

5 runs in 3 innings? still possible, but you better not waste any time in the 7th.

Amy said...

Well, Lowell said he wanted them to exhaust themselves playing more games, so maybe this is a good thing? Nah, I want it over.

If we didn't all just want to see the MFY lose, would we prefer to play them or Cleveland, in terms of odds?

(I dread a NY-Boston ALCS for personal reasons, but just curious what you all think of our odds against each team.)

tim said...

I think our odds are better against the tribe rather than MFY.

Sarah Haendler said...

This is not the glee I was anticipating.

But hell, bring it - go five games and beat each other up. Then one of you can come see us at Fenway and get your ass handed to you. Doesn't really matter which.

not good, clev, not good at all.

allan said...

i'm thinking the sox should become the first team to go 11-0 in the post-season.

Sarah Haendler said...

I hate baseball game patriotism. You want to be patriotic? Great, go do something useful.

allan said...

it's more fascism than patriotism at the toilet. way more.

Rob said...

Let's just say the Yankees win tonight.

TWO MORE GAMES.

Paul Byrd. C.C. Sabathia.

Just remember it's too early for any assumptions. 8-3 Yankees. It's better than a walk-off from A-Rod or Jeter.

nixon33 said...

GOD I HATE THE FUCKING YANKEES.
everything about them...

Rob said...

it's more fascism than patriotism at the toilet. way more.

I like Ronan Tynan, I like his voice, but I changed the channel. I can't stand all that "patriotism" either. etc etc etc.

David said...

I don't understand everybody bitching about the TBS guys. He never said it would propel the Angels to victory. Steve Stone said if Weaver could keep the Red Sox from scoring it could be something that propels the Angels to victory. He was referring to the Angeld being down 0-2 in the series and looking for momentum. It amazes me that people hear what they want to hear.

Jim said...

Tomorrow's NY papers if Yankee win:

And a gutsy, pain-filled Clemens inspired his team to victory, limping off the field a true Yankee hero.

If Yankees lose:

A selfish, egoistic Clemens lied about his health and put a quest for personal glory above his team. For shame.

allan said...

Cap'n Intangibles (0-for-4 tonight) now hitting .083 in the series.

It's A-Rod's fault.

allan said...

A-Rod is drawing all the attention and pressure during this series and leaving no pressure for Jeter. Without the intense pressure, Jeter cannot thrive. Thus, the .083.

Rob said...

Where was Jensen Lewis an inning ago, I wondered quietly to myself.

nixon33 said...

where the fuck was that lewis guy in the 6th? huh?

s1c said...

Lets get some runs here Cleveland!

nixon33 said...

where the fuck was that lewis guy in the 6th? huh?

Amy said...

Whatever, David, I heard what I heard, and it was a stupid remark to make in what, as I recall, was the first or second inning of the game. Stopping one team from scoring early in the game doesn't mean very much.

Rob said...

TBS is marveling at the difference in speed for Chamberlain, between his 99 mph fastball and the 77 mph curveball.

Pitch-command aside, there's this guy named Eric Gagné - not sure if you know him... but he throws about 93 mph for the fastball... I know. It's not the insane gas that the Yankees Special Son Joba throws, but his fastball is around 93 mph.

His curveball? 70 mph.

tim said...

Yeah, david - he definitely put the entire series on one at bat in the LAA-BOS game a couple of times.

nixon33 said...

he said atone

Sarah Haendler said...

come on Trot...

Rob said...

2 on, 2 out, Trot Nixon.

Hmm.

tim said...

A dong and they'll be down two...ATONE, TROT! ATONE!

Verass coming in?

s1c said...

Are you freaking kidding me? This is your future star and you are going to pull him?

oops, pitching to Trot. never mind.

tim said...

Good atoning. Now we need a mf'ing DONG!

Rob said...

Don't be a hating Trot now, guys.

s1c said...

Wait, I thought you need bugs to score against Joba!

C'mon cleveland. Keep this going.

tim said...

Fruitbat up...

c'mon casey.

Ron said...

Bugs must still be getting to Joba (contribution from my wife).

David said...

Amy, a huge difference between "could" and "would" or "will". Since the subject came up again I checked the Tivo recording and it was definetely discussed in the context of the Angels using something positive to gain momentum not guaranteing them a victory.

Amy said...

I could never hate Trot. I can't hate anyone from the 2004 team. Well, maybe Damon. Ok, Damon.

tim said...

Fuck.

nixon33 said...

I checked the Tivo recording
hahahaha

Rob said...

RIGHT THERE.

See that? A momentum killer, there. Instead of a strong 2 innings from JtC, you get a second inning where he hangs on by a thread with the Indians threatening.

And that last ball? Sure, it was an out, but Blake took it to the wall.

allan said...

clutch double from trot, but one run is not enough there.

4 in the 9th? well, the orioles got 3 off fruitbat in a very recent 9th inning.

Amy said...

Could, would, will...still silly to try and make every play seem like THE critical play in the game. Especially in the beginning of the game.

I think we've beat this one to death. I still think it was dumb, but respect your view and your right to defend TBS.

Rob said...

I want TiVo.

nixon33 said...

fucking trots error was totally the game (if indeed the yanks end up winning)
fuck.

well i guess let 'em play 5. just like mikey lowell said.
let em use all their guys.
i just dont see BYRD keeping the yanks quiet, i hope he does, but the guy is pretty ineffective, from what ive seen

tim said...

And the reason for the Indians closer coming in?

tim said...

Heh, we're in SLAM range everyone!

Let's all say it together now,

SLAM range!

David said...

Not defending TBS, just amazed at how critical people are of announcers. To me they are just background noise, like my A/C turing on and off, or the crowd. Until I came across this site I never gave much thought to who was calling a game or what they were saying. Except for McCarver, of course.

Rob said...

Fruitbat time.

Amy said...

Sometimes the announcers are where we direct our misplaced anger when we are frustrated with our teams. Sometimes we are just angry with them.

allan said...

amazed at how critical people are of announcers. To me they are just background noise, like my A/C turing on and off, or the crowd.

Laura often says the same thing. For me, though, I cannot tune them out, no matter how hard I try. Their voices -- and their stupidity -- go straight into my ear. It's horrible.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i always felt like if they won today, they'd win both games at home and then they'd go back to cleveland for game 5.

pettitte up in the pen.

nixon33 said...

that diet coke girl, you are dead on.

thatdietcokegirl said...

plus with the announcers it's like..how long are we gonna go on with these stupid assholes? you watch those old games from the 50s and 60s and it was so nice. so little talking and more excitement and presence for the game. sometimes you listen to the guys now and it's almost like they are talking to hear themselves talk and they forget they have a television audience men, women and children.

so i like it when ppl bitch about them. they deserve it ;)

allan said...

two outs to go -- and tbs puts up a "CLE Leads 2-1" graphic for tomorrow night's game.

David said...

Redsock, I feel the same way about MacCarver. Him calling a game is like a car sitting 3 blocks away at 2 AM with bass booming. Sometimes I think I hear it and it pisses me off.

2 outs in the 9th and they already announce Johnny Damon is the player of the game.

Rob said...

You all have such little faith in Paul Byrd. These soft-tossers will annoy the hell out of the Yankee bats.

Ah, a shame. Could've capped a great night... Mussina tomorrow, I suppose?

nixon33 said...

tomorrow will be interesting.

I'm going for a short walk. Back soon.

Well, at least there will be baseball tomorrow.

But there better not be any on Wednesday.

Folks who want Cleveland a little more tired before the ALCS just got their wish, I guess.

meh. byrd can be good tho. i remember a few games when he was truly irritating against us. the ol 'finesse guy' and shiz. i hope he brings it tomorrow night.

s1c said...

Fragging Cleveland! Fragging Trot! Fragging Damon!

Oh well, MFY's live for another day. Byrd will win tomorrow!!!

David said...

s1c, MFY game or cowboys tomorrow night?

Rob said...

Reading up on that Halos Heaven game thread.

There had to have been 60 posts pleading and wishing for an Angel pitcher to bean Flo and MBM.

Once it was 9-0, someone said, "I'm sure glad we're good sports though. At least we have that upon which to hang our collective hat."

Heh.

Rob said...

My point about our "fans"

Is gettting out of traffic that big of a concern? The traffic is NOT THAT BAD!!!!!!

The Los Angeles Mystique.

allan said...

Just watched the dongs.

TBS guy is saying Tiz will have trouble with the "double wall" in right field. Less than 10 seconds later -- BOOM!!!!!!

And Manny -- damn -- a rocket to dead center. Launched!!!!

TBS then says that if Weaver and Angels don't want the Sox to admire their taters, then they should make better pitches!

s1c said...

s1c, MFY game or cowboys tomorrow night?

Well, if it goes as planned. Boys for the first quarter (by that time they will be ahead 35-0) then the MFY game.

Rob said...

TBS then says that if Weaver and Angels don't want the Sox to admire their taters, then they should make better pitches!

Uncle Joe said essentially the same thing.

It's just easier to blame others, I guess.

Wow good for you I can't even watch replays of the previous nights games.

And with Schilling being the 2nd starter that would put Beckett and Schilling to pitch games 5 and 6
right? And leave either Dice or Wake for a game 7? if neccessary.
or beckett could pitch on short rest for game 4 and Schilling on full rest for game 5 so you could flip those 2 if you wanted to I guess.....It should be interesting

I like the fact that Byrd doesn't walk many people. 28 walks in 192.1 innings this season. But I just looked up his only start against the Yankees this season, August 11th.

2 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, BB, K

Should be interesting, at least, tomorrow.
