G73: Phillies 8, Red Sox 2

Red Sox - 000 020 000 - 2 8 0
Phillies - 301 004 00x - 8 12 0
Colon (4-6-4-2-4, 70) had a rough start: ten pitches in, he was down 3-0, thanks to a Rollins dinger, Victorino's double and Howard's two-run dong.

Howard led off the third with another shot to deep left and Boston trailed 4-0. The Red Sox got two back in the fifth on back-to-back taters from Pedroia (who also singled and doubled) and Drew, but then Francona decided bringing Timlin in for the sixth inning would be a good idea.

He was wrong. Walk, single, sacrifice, single, single, fielder's choice, triple, walk. Four runs off Old Yeller allowed the Phillies to put the game on cruise control.

There was good news: Ortiz's cast is off and he may start range of motion exercises on Tuesday.

***

Bartolo Colon (3.41, 128 ERA+) / Cole Hamels (3.27, 134 ERA+)

The Phillies (41-30) lead the NL East by 3 games. Chase Utley (.309/.401/.636, 22 HR, 61 RBI, 163 OPS+) and Pat Burrell (.283/.425/.602, 162 OPS+) are the big bats and Hamels is the ace of the staff.

By comparison, J.D. Drew's OPS+ is 164 (.321/.428/.577), followed by Manny Ramirez (146) and Kevin Youkilis (138).

The rest of the AL East is off today, but there was some Yankees news:

Speaking of injuries, the dumb Fox announcers were saying Saturday that Ortiz is "probably" out for the year. Do they know something, or are they typical dumb Fox announcers? They were freaking me out. Then on Sunday, the TBS announcers said Manny is "likely" out for a while.

Jack Marshall said...

The Fox announcers are just behind on their medical news. And morons, of course. The Orioles announcers also didn't have good information. I've atually HAD a torn tendon sheath--if the tendon itself isn't damaged and you are careful, it hurts, but it heals in about a month, and you are good as new.

The Wang injury, on the other hand (or foot) hits the Yankees where they are weakest. Unless the Yankees have another Aaron Small in the wings (no, I will never get over that), this could be the final brick in the wall.

Zenslinger said...

this could be the final brick in the wall

If they hadn't started winning games recently, I would think so as well. As is, I have to wonder if they're not going to hang in there somehow and grab the WC again. Depressing prospect.

I suppose I should not abandon the RA/RS stuff I was posting a few days ago that hinted at a middling season at best for the Yankees, but it's hard to shake the notion that they could yet beat out the Jays and Rays.

nixon33 said...

heidi is easy on the eyes

laura k said...

A Yankeeless October. It's inevitable.

Zenslinger said...

Fantasy: I have Colon. I'm inclined to bench him today, though. Phils scored 20 runs the other day.

allan said...

The first "inevitable" of 2008!

...

ESPN on cable but ..... Rogers Sportsnet has NESN!

laura k said...

Heidi comment also inevitable.

nixon33 said...

haha

nixon33 said...

ok time to feast on some weak national league pitching!

Rob said...

As much as its a ha ha ha moment for the Yankees because they lose their top pitcher, I really hate the way it happened - while he was running the basepaths.

Youk out with some back spasms tonight.

Rob said...

And Papi gets his cast off and there's no pain.

nixon33 said...

trot went 2-3 with a double (almost a dong) & a walk.
i hope he fits in well with a crappy national league.

Rob said...

Me too. Glad he's out of the AAA Desert.

Amy said...

Hi, everyone.

Re Wang: remember the comment the other night about how interleague play is bad, in part because of the risk to AL pitchers who are not used to hitting or running the basepaths?

Amy said...

FY!

nixon33 said...

Me too. Glad he's out of the AAA Desert.
he now wears number 6 in case you were wondering.

Rob said...

Re Wang: remember the comment the other night about how interleague play is bad, in part because of the risk to AL pitchers who are not used to hitting or running the basepaths?

Yep. I don't care if it's a Yankee that gets injured - it's not a bad situation. That could have happened (and still could) to a Red Sox pitcher.

nixon33 said...

COME ON FIRE

Amy said...

I assume you meant it IS a bad situation, right, Ish?

Rob said...

Drop of clean water falls on On Fire.

Rob said...

That ball went inside the tarp.

allan said...

K there, but Drew's gotta go dong crazy in this series, shut these fans up

Rob said...

I assume you meant it IS a bad situation, right, Ish?

Yeah, that.

nixon33 said...

K there, but Drew's gotta go dong crazy in this series, shut these fans up

AMEN. I HATE PHILLY

Rob said...

K there, but Drew's gotta go dong crazy in this series, shut these fans up

What was Drew's history with Philadelphia that's made them remember? Castig mentioned it but I wasn't listening at first.

Amy said...

Poop.

laura k said...

Nix, you're all set up to be a Mets fan - hating Philly, Trot on the team...

I said the same thing as Amy re Ish bad situation, but blogger ate it. Thanks for taking care of that for me, Amy.

allan said...

drafted 1997, did not sign. he/boras wanted $.

laura k said...

Drew held out for more money, didn't sign.

I was listening to the other team at the time, and Michael Kay COULD NOT STOP ripping Drew over it. Drew was like the anti-christ.

Jack Marshall said...

I could be wrong, but Heidi strikes me as even less excusable than the previous NESN eye-candy. And most of the teams are doing this now. Is she really even a baseball fan? Is there any good reason for her other than to raise the blood pressure of nixon, et al.? It's sooooo blatant. For a while the Orioles acrually had a fat middle-aged former play-by-play man in this role, and it was refreshing. Now it appears to be an out-of-work swim-suit model.

Amy said...

No problem, Laura. I wanted to be sure I hadn't completely misunderstood Ish!

laura k said...

bah

Amy said...

Oh, fuck, a leadoff HR? That sucks.

nixon33 said...

FUCK ME.

oh yeah, l-girl, im getting ready to buy my black nixon mets shirt....

COME ON COLON.

laura k said...

I think we're all played out on the Heidi thing by now.

I don't even know why there is a third person on the broadcast team. You'd never miss it.

Amy said...

Hmmm, not an auspicious beginning.

Can someone alert me when Heidi comes on? I confess: I have no idea which one she is. (I block her out like commercials, I guess.)

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, I had a feeling Dr. Large was going to have a difficult night tonight.

laura k said...

Dr Large, I like that.

K. That's more like it.

nixon33 said...

OK nice k.
more outs please

laura k said...

holy shit

Amy said...

Yikes.

nixon33 said...

FUUCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

allan said...

so this batting practice is kinda cool -- when does the actual game start?

laura k said...

i can't believe there's only 1 out

Zenslinger said...

Hopefully Howard killed their rally.

allan said...

needed 10 pitches to get 3 runs

nixon33 said...

looks like we're in trouble tonight if he continues with this bhullshit.

laura k said...

unless we have a total dong fest. we can win 15-13.

Rob said...

I don't even know why there is a third person on the broadcast team. You'd never miss it.

This year before they hired Heidi, they went over a month without a third person. I didn't miss it. She's easy on the ears, too. She at least sounds confident and doesn't sound like a ditzy blonde.

Amy said...

At least there are 2 outs.

(Desperately seeking the upside to this inning.)

OK, THREE outs. Phew.

nixon33 said...

finally the fat fuck forced the phils to fan.

Amy said...

I really need to pay more attention to the announcers. I have no idea what Heidi sounds like or looks like.

Scary, huh?

Zenslinger said...

fuckin' phone FEMA!

Amy said...

Nice alliteration, Nixon!

Rob said...

I spilled some gingerale on my bed. Howard hits a dong. The score is 3-0. It's about to rain quite a lot here. Turning out to be a fantastic night.

Amy said...

At least it was only ginger ale. No stains. Unlike red wine or something.

allan said...

heidi is the one that's not don or jerry!

:>)

Rob said...

Interesting. MLB hasn't blacked out the ESPN feed here in the Boston area. So, I've got it on NESN and ESPN. I'll take NESN, please.

laura k said...

Ditzy people come in all hair colours you know. :)

Says a non-ditzy blonde.

Rob said...

SNARED.

Cat-like reflexes.

laura k said...

yeah, pretty good for a camel

Rob said...

Ditzy people come in all hair colours you know. :)

It's true. I almost got killed by a ditzy, well, darker blonde, today.

laura k said...

the mayor comes through!

did he canseco out there?

Rob said...

Geoff Jenkins... Wasn't he on the Rockies last year? I love how he dives, tries to get up, and falls on his stomach again.

Amy said...

Heidi: not in the booth. When does she say anything? Has she said anything yet tonight? NOt that I really care, but with all the fuss here, I feel like I should know who she is.

laura k said...

there's really no connection between hair colour and intelligence. for that matter, having hair at all and intelligence.

in case any bald guys are gloating.

nixon33 said...

come on lugo!

laura k said...

Amy: Heidi has the spot that Tina used to have. She's blonde and attractive. That's all there is to it. Seriously.

Rob said...

there's really no connection between hair colour and intelligence. for that matter, having hair at all and intelligence.

Of course not. It's just the running joke.

Heidi is usually near the Red Sox dugout.

laura k said...

Wait, did you know Tina?

Rob said...

Normally I wouldn't be banging on about Heidi, but this is for educational purposes.

laura k said...

It's just the running joke.

I know, but I'm blonde!

Amy said...

I do remember Tina.

nixon33 said...

COME ON YOU FAT FUCKER HELP YR CAUSE

Rob said...

Colon is the tying run. Come on! Hit one out!

allan said...

time for b.c. to tie this party up, big dong-style!!!

Rob said...

That was quite a swing.

laura k said...

Maybe Dr Large can get one back here.

Zenslinger said...

Dr. Large -- a chance for VENGEANCE!

Rob said...

He tried.

But I think he'd have better luck trying to leg out a bunt.

laura k said...

that would be something to see

Zenslinger said...

But I think he'd have better luck trying to leg out a bunt.

Harsh.

laura k said...

I would like to note (off-topic) that even though we are down by 3 runs I am happy happy happy tonight.

nixon33 said...

i remember TEENNER

Rob said...

He'd have a chance if the catcher and pitcher both blew out hamstrings.

laura k said...

teener of the large mouth

allan said...

i assume ish's use of the term "banging on" was deliberate.

Rob said...

They're talking about Tiger Woods on the radio.

laura k said...

I was going to comment on the "banging on" but decided to leave it alone.

Rob said...

i assume ish's use of the term "banging on" was deliberate.

That would just be creepy. I posted that, realized what I said, and hoped no one would notice.

Zenslinger said...

happy happy happy

Impending vacation syndrome?

laura k said...

as if anything goes unnoticed here! :)

rollins is 13 for 13 in SBs. is that supposed to be good?? HA!

allan said...

don says rollins has swung at the first pitch he has seen both times tonight -- with the HR and single.

he hit the HR on a 1-0 pitch -- one inning ago.

come on, don.

laura k said...

Impending vacation syndrome?

Yes! PLUS just before game-time I was offered a big, fun writing/editing job that will pay for the trip.

Rob said...

You don't exactly see big boppers wearing those double ear-flapped helmets.

Zenslinger said...

big, fun writing/editing job

Now that is good news.

Rob said...

Yes! PLUS just before game-time I was offered a big, fun writing/editing job that will pay for the trip.

Congratulations! Gotta love that, huh? You do something that you're going to like, and it'll pay for a vacation!

nixon33 said...

looks like its gonna be a long night for the pen.

laura k said...

Thanks guys. Yeah, it's the best thing to be paid for doing something you love. It doesn't happen all the time for me, but when it does...!

Plus I had no idea how we were paying for this trip. Something I thought was paying for it didn't come through, but it was too late to cancel (nonrefundable air and car).

So this is very welcome financially too.

nixon33 said...

OK RUNS!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

I'm creating a blog, which isn't the hardest thing to do, except for... the title. Not real good with titles.

laura k said...

I'm bad at titles too. What's the blog about? Does it have a theme or is it personal or...?

Rob said...

Ow. That'll learn ya, Lyndon.

nixon33 said...

what about "Blog-ish"

Patrick said...

Ish's dish of delish

allan said...

we can help -- what's the blog about?

nixon33 said...

COME ON! I feel i need to root this team extra hard tonight

Rob said...

There's Heidi, Amy.

laura k said...

AMY HERE SHE IS: HEIDI

nixon33 said...

HEIDI ALERT! (kidding)

Patrick said...

I fully expected to lose tonight. A win would be a steal.

laura k said...

Go Nix, you'll get it done.

nixon33 said...

FY is the only one doing, NOW LETS GO JD POWER!

laura k said...

It's the 3rd inning! No reason to expect to lose.

Patrick said...

I expected to lose this game yesterday.

Rob said...

I'm bad at titles too. What's the blog about? Does it have a theme or is it personal or...?

Two general themes, one being a sort of photo gallery, and another being local sports commentary. Among some other things. One of my friends may post some of his pictures too.

nixon33 said...

oh yeah, i forget, we're on the road. Team B shows up....yawn.

laura k said...

Patrick, what's up with that?

laura k said...

You don't want to go with anything very basic, like The Ish Blog?

laura k said...

Or just Ish.

Patrick said...

I don't want to get my hopes up for games like this. I won't be disappointed if we lose, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if we win.

allan said...

the joy of ish

Patrick said...

The glee of sox?

Rob said...

Goodbye baseball.

laura k said...

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST

Patrick said...

Meanwhile Howard is loving the Colon.

allan said...

looks like we're getting a semi-colon tonight.

laura k said...

I don't want to get my hopes up for games like this. I won't be disappointed if we lose, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if we win.

This is good for me to hear. I'm trying to write something about fans and our expectations.

I'm like the only person around here who doesn't get really upset when we lose. The Zen of Baseball, or something like that.

laura k said...

semi-colon! very writerly of you.

laura k said...

remy talking about how howard's swing is perfect for fenway. yes, come hit at fenway!! in a sox uni.

Rob said...

The circumstances usually dictate how I feel about a loss. Most of them I can put into perspective, but there are some of those where it's a bit of a hit to the gut.

Patrick said...

Swoon! LBJ!

allan said...

god what horrible nesn camerawork

they miss lugo's catch of theliner and they have a distant shot of lyndon's dive.

laura k said...

some are definitely harder to take than others.

but i mostly just move on. but not because i care any less or am any less passionate about the game.

i don't know, i'm still working on it.

but what patrick said is good insight.

laura k said...

you have good taste in men, patrick

nixon33 said...

this sucks

Rob said...

you have good taste in men, patrick

Oi. I might need to put MY earmuffs on. Yes, I have some.

Rob said...

Oh Slugo. So close to your first dong.

laura k said...

slugo!

Amy said...

I am back. Went to get some ice cream, and yay, we are only one more run behind. And we have two on with two out.

Patrick said...

two outs and two on for Colon... again...

allan said...

man, just a little bit o' roid would have helped that out.

Rob said...

LMAO!!! His helmet falls off from his swing!

Patrick said...

Did someone say Ice Cream? Ice Cream is dreamy! <3

what type?

Rob said...

O'Brien: "Like a cherry falling off a sundae."

Rob said...

I have one of those little Friendly's sundaes to go. Hot fudge. Minus the hot.

nixon33 said...

im glad our rallys are left up to colon....FUCK!

allan said...

colon may pull a fat with one of those hacks.

allan said...

amy: you missed heidi!

Amy said...

SO I missed Heidi!!

And, Laura, will you tell us more about the editing/writing job you just got? Congrats!!

And, boo, Phillies. Boo, Colon.

Rob said...

Remy: "Next time Bartolo comes up [to the plate], take your children out of the room."

Amy said...

We had soft vanilla/chocolate swirl with jimmies, as we New Englanders call them. (Sprinkles to you folks from beyond New England, shots in Philadelphia, according to my Philadelphia relatives.)

allan said...

HE GONE!

nixon33 said...

Remy: "Next time Bartolo comes up [to the plate], take your children out of the room."

FUCKING BRILLIANT

Amy said...

Ish, when does your blog go up? What is the URL?

Patrick said...

I love soft serve.

I remember going to Fenway as a kid and getting maybe 2-3 cones of soft serve. I was more psyched about that then the game.

Rob said...

I usually go for peppermint stick ice cream, and if they have it - pineapple or raspberry dole whip.

Amy said...

Ice cream: definitely worth missing Heidi for.

laura k said...

When I lived in Philly, they were called jimmies. I had never heard that before.

Yum, you have good taste in ice cream flavours. :)

laura k said...

Thanks Amy. You'll hear enough about the writing job on wmtc. I'll save it for that.

Amy said...

Wow, Ish, those are some exotic flavors.

I tend to prefer non-fruit flavors of ice cream.

Wow, that wasn't a dong!

Rob said...

Ish, when does your blog go up? What is the URL?

Don't know yet. Still haven't chosen a title.

Zenslinger said...

Don't look now, but it's a 1-2-3 inning!

Actually, it would be encouraging if Colon could stop the bleeding, even assuming we lose the game.

Amy said...

Really? I will have to tell my father that. He grew up in Philly. I have cousins there now, but my info is from my dad. It could be from the 1940s since he came to NY in 1950!

Patrick said...

I think I might have to go get a pint of ice cream now. Either that or eat the fresh asparagus I just picked.

It's a very hard decision.

Amy said...

Ok, Laura, I will watch for news on wmtc.

Are you guys all packed yet? What time does the alarm clock go off?

Zenslinger said...

I heard a rumble just now...

San Francisco earthquake?

Nope, just all the "same-sexers" hauling ass for City Hall to get married.

Go go go

Amy said...

Fresh asparagus you picked! Wow. That sounds good. Eat that, and THEN get ice cream. :)

laura k said...

The only bad part of vacation is missing our dogs! The older one already knows something's up, and she's waiting to see which kind of suitcases this is - the good kind where she comes along or the bad kind where we leave without her.

Amy said...

Didn't LBJ lead off twice already this game? Am I dreaming that? It seems impossible, given that we have no runs, but for some reason, that's what I recall.

laura k said...

A same-sex marriage earthquake, yay!

Patrick said...

Eat that, and THEN get ice cream. :)

OMG! Genius!

It's time to cook.

laura k said...

freshly picked asaparagus > ice cream

Rob said...

FUCK YEAH!!!!

allan said...

lbj has led off 3 innings

FY DONG-Y!

laura k said...

Amy, 7 a.m. flight, packed already so we can watch the game.

FUCK YEAH DONG!!!!!!!!

Amy said...

Laura, I almost wrote something about that in my email to your earlier----same story with our dog. She looks at us, asking, "Is this one I get to go on or not?"

FUCK YEAH!!

I ended up taking it out because I didn't want to make you feel sad.

Jere said...

dong

Jere said...

Rob said...

ON FIRE!!!!

Only a matter of time before they let the dongs outside!

allan said...

OF: FUCK YOU, FANS!!!

Amy said...

Thanks, Allan, for confirming that.

Yay!! B2B and we are only 2 runs down!

nixon33 said...

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUCK YOU PHILLY!!!!!

Jere said...

yes each of those represented a different dong

laura k said...

ON FIRE!!!!!!!

TAKE THAT STUPID BOOING PHILLIES PHANS!!!!

Rob said...

I haven't seen the sun all day. Been cloudy. Now, as the sun has just set, the sky has turned pink.

Zenslinger said...

Gawd Damn!

Amy said...

Can Manny make it B2B2B?

laura k said...

Aw thanks, Amy. I miss them a lot, but I don't feel sad about leaving them, as long as they're home with someone good. Which they will be.

Rob said...

Cranberry grapefruit juice... Never thought I'd drink that, but it's delicious.

Zenslinger said...

Hamels @ 81 pitches.

Patrick said...

Wow I leave the room for 2 minutes and I missed ANOTHER JD DONG!

I am never around for them and I always call them at the wrong times.

Sigh.

Amy said...

I usually feel sad as I walk out the door. But I always remember what a dog trainer once told me when we once boarded Cassie with her: once you are out of sight, the dog forgets, goes to sleep, eats, etc., until you return when they act like they missed you the whole time.

laura k said...

Not sure where cranberry grapefruit juice came up, but that is delicious. With vodka of course.

Amy said...

That's ok, Patrick. I always miss Heidi.

Rob said...

Crazy play there. Side arm that one!

Rob said...

Talk about exciting plays.

Utley has 22 home runs, and he leads off the inning with a bunt.

Patrick said...

JD Dong > Heidi

Rob said...

Please please please don't show me another dong here. How many do you have, six?
