Red Sox - 013 000 004 - 8 13 0My internet connection went out at work in the bottom of the first (IT/server upgrades) and by the time I was back up, the game was over.
Rangers - 072 013 02x - 15 16 0
Clearly, I didn't miss much, as Wakefield imploded in the second (1.2-4-7-4-0, 49) and the Sox's bid for an 11-run rally in the top of the ninth fell seven runs short. It turned out that Wakefield's 500th appearance was also his shortest start in a Red Sox uniform.
Kevin Youkilis -- back in the clean-up spot -- belted a three-run dong in the third.
Good news earlier in the day though: the Blue Jays beat the Rays 7-4 in 13 innings and the Tigers beat the Twins 6-4. Also, the White Sox beat the Angels 7-6 in 15 innings. The Yankees beat the Mariners 7-4.
So we stay 2.5 GB in the East and 5.5 GA for the Wild Card.

Gregg Zaun: Grand Slam!

Tonight's start is Wakefield's 500th appearance for the Red Sox.
Bob Stanley is the only other pitcher in club history to appear in at least 500 games with 637 to his credit. Wakefield will become the first pitcher in club history to start at least 350 of his 500 outings with the Red Sox, and the 23rd pitcher to reach those milestones with one team in Major League history.Wakefield has 162 wins with Boston, only 30 fewer than both Cy Young and Roger Clemens. I'm hoping he can stick around for another three seasons and get at least 193. Wakefield already holds the club record for losses with 143; Young is 2nd with 112, followed by Stanley with 111. (He is also 20 starts away from tying Clemens for the club record in that category.)
Kevin Youkilis, who was not with the team last night because of a personal matter, should be back in the lineup tonight and J.D. Drew might return during next week's Tampa Bay series.

Safe to say tonight is Orioles elimination day?
Safe to say tonight is Orioles elimination day?
Today or tomorrow, I'd say. I think I read they renewed Capt. Kirk for 2009.
MFY only one-half game out of 4th -- if the Jays and Mariners win, Toronto moves into 3rd!
Today can only be OED for the division. For the WC it should be tomorrow or the day after. Anyway, there's no way they still have a mathematical chance (as in, no combination of real-life, schedule-permitting wins and losses will get them to the playoffs). One of the Sox-Rays has to win at least 3 games.

And since those teams play 6 games against each other, then the O's were actually eliminated a few days ago, no?

Oh, yeah, that's what I was saying. I just wasn't very clear. The only reason one team HAS to win at least 3 games is their games against each other. Otherwise it would be possible for both teams to lose all their games, and for the Baltidongers to win all of theirs.

I probably won't look at the AL MVP choices until the season is over, but I figured I'd share this.
KenTremendous at SoSH re FY for MVP:
"So, Kinsler is done, Quentin is probably done...Hamilton and Huff are out, ARod is out, forget about Sizemore...I'd say the biggest threats to the "Pedroia 4 MVP" campaign are (1) the inability of anyone in the universe to continue at the pace he's been on recently, and (2) Justin Morneau, who is at .311/.389/.521 with 113 RBI after tonight's grand slam. If his team makes the playoffs he will be top 3 on everyone's ballot, I'd say. The fact that he has won before may actually hurt him, as everyone loves the (scrappy) underdog story. Plus, Morneau is only white, whereas Pedroia is both white and short.
I'd say at this moment in time the AL MVP is Pedroia's to lose, which is a thing I never thought I would type."

why is the rays game blacked-out on MLB.TV?
isnt it in the clear if it starts before 2pm?
fuckers.
and they cancelled the Mets/Phils game which i was interested in, of course.
fucking downs
DOWNS INDUCES THE DP!
Just wanted to say re: the D-rays announcers, what a bunch of fucking assholes.
Downs had thrown like 10 balls in a row or something, then when he threw a strike on a 2-0 count to Upton, the crowd cheered, and one of the FKR announcers started clapping into the microphone. Talk about disgusting. But the next pitch was the DP so I let out a good ol GO FUCK YOURSELVES!
3 outs till 2 GB.
BJ RYAN YOU FUCKING COCKSUCKER.
FUCKING RYAN. FOR FUCK SAKES GET OUTS!

3 avatars:
guy with axe, guy with gun, and a fucking grouch ...
can't see it here either. i assume he was gambling in the bot 9th. probably a good idea since zauny was on deck.
Rolen doubled, then Zaun hit it to deep short (basically shallow LF), SS made a nice play to grab it, not sure why Rolen turned at 3rd and started heading home but then SS threw to 3rd and got him in a rundown. No fucking idea why he decided to try and head home or the coach waved him home when he was so clearly beaten.
although its moot anyway because the next batter wouldve just gotten out anyway. these are the fucking BJs after all.
1 on, 1 out.
why not score, you worthless fucksticks?
fucking Scutarfuck
cunty bollocks. i hate this team. just looking at them, pack of fucking losers.
Alex Rivers you worthless cock
wow, cunty bollocks, havent said that in a while
And these are the do-nothing shits that the local media here always crows is a fucking contender. It's beyond insane. They are a .500 team -- at best. Yet morons who don't really follow the team read the papers and think the Jays might do it this year. Fucking wankers.
here we fooking go.

IM WITH YOU. I'D BE AMAZED IF THE JAYS WERE TO PULL THIS OUT.
IM PRETTY MUCH ACCEPTING THEY WILL LOSE
Oh for sure, it's ridiculous. Impossible to have a conversation with one of those fucknuts, but luckily there are some normal ones. Few and far between though.
But the media, yeah, they tend to do that. Just look at the way they view the Maple Laughs.
Who or what the fuck is "Carlson"?
I'm hoping we can stay at 2.5 or even get to 1.5.
This week's games are going to be wild!
Here's for the 1.5!

PULL THE DICKS OUT OF YOUR ASSES SO YOU CAN PLAY BALL!
I couldn't stomach those fucking announcers anymore. Got the CBC feed on now with good ol' Jim Hughson.
Sounds like it may be tough this week (or next) if we get stuck with the Rays cheerleaders Staats and Migraine.
This past week was the first time our package had both feeds of a Sox game. I hope they do it some more.
well... this is over.
I really like this CBC. That pitching change wasn't sponsored, nor did they use the opportunity to cram a few extra commercials in.
Ooo TFC soccer is gonna be on right after this game.
someone needs to explain the notion of a fucking strike to the BJs
Whew. Close call, fuck...they better win this now.

Grant Balfour will grant RUN four to the BJs.

Amazing that this game was in the top of the 9th at 3:15, I thought to myself, this will be a tidy 2+ hour game. Wrong.
Heh, Hughson loves to say the hispanic names with the accents. Great announcer.

tito sharing allans pills.
In Kotsay's 7 games with the Sox, he's .276/.323/.517. His Atlanta OBP this year was .340 and his career OBP is .337.

What Tito is saying: "I want Mark Kotsay to have more plate appearances in this game than anyone else on the roster."

Okay, back to work.

It doesn't sound definite. They did some stuff starting at 11 PM last night, and everything was fine -- watched the SEA-MFY game until what? 12:10 or so -- but they might not have been doing anything that would effect website access.
Mop's pitchign in the bottom of the eighth. 6-4 Detroit.
cool.
in other news, i know this is an OLD topic and been discussed a million times, but jesus christ, seeing nomar for the first time in a while, dont you think he tires himself between every pitch with his routine?
i mean, you just cannot maintain that level of energy to fit every little detail of that routine BETWEEN EVERY PITCH.
its tiring to watch, anyway.
I got some coffee syrup today. The bottle says "Bring home a taste of New England", but I'm pretty sure it's fairly specific to Rhode Island. Certainly nobody made a big deal about it in Massachusetts. (I do see this particular company is located in southeastern Massachusetts near Rhode Island.)
I still haven't tried frozen lemonade, which is the other state drink. It's probably just lemon sugar syrup served over shaved ice.
Fernando Rodney to close for Detroit in the bottom of the 9th, still 6-4.
Rodney's a turd. Bases loaded with one out.
Herald:
Nearly 20 members of the team gathered around the clubhouse's big-screen TV this afternoon to watch the dramatic finish to the Tampa Bay-Toronto game at Rogers Centre. Needless to say, the Sox were openly rooting against the Rays, although confidence in Gregg Zaun wasn't exactly high prior to his game-winning grand slam. As soon as the ball cleared the fence, however, the room erupted in applause for the Toronto catcher.

A: A good start.
Youks will have none of that "short guy for MVP" crap. He wants it for himself.
i remember watching a yakns game years ago vs. tex and tex was up like 11-0 or something rediculous.
the yanks kepty scoring a run here a run there, they finally tied it up in the 9th or something, athen texas took the lead in the 10th, and posada hit it walkoff in the bottom of the 10.
details are hazy like what inning it happened in and the like, but i remember them coming back...
ugh
wow, he didnt miss that one
i guess allan must be having IT problems
So now that Wakes gone- let's get Ross in there. I wanna see what the guy can do.
I have a riddle. How many runs would have to score in a half inning to guarantee that every player scored at least one run?
A quote of the day on my google page. Related to last night's discussion.
Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits.
Faith is a cop-out. If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits.
That can be turned around pretty easily: faith is not about rationality. If you need your faith to stand on logic, then it's not real, complete faith.
eh, we aint winning this one. at least allan was better off not being able to see it.
and is the answer 10?
Definitely not winning like this. Way to go Timlin. Rangers announcer said this guy smokes balls.
No nixon. Remember there are 2 outs allowed before the inning is over.
Who the fuck is Nelson Cruz, and why does he have twice as many dongs today than in the other 140 games this season?
And yeah, it's not looking good.
im dumb and bad at math. theres 9 guys in a lineup, so if every player had to score, it would be 9 runs. so... outs shouldnt really have anything to do with it, right?
9?
I have a riddle. How many runs would have to score in a half inning to guarantee that every player scored at least one run?
I'd say 29, but that's without thinking about it.
Good evening, everyone. Had a nice dinner at my sister's house with a friend of our's who came down from about 30 miles north of here... had some homemade pizzas and cranberry oatmeal cookies.
I was checking my phone and saw 4-3 Rays into the bottom of the 13th, then I saw 7-4 Final, and I'm thinking holy shit. Walk-off grand slam? Yep!
Sucks about the score rigjht now, but at least the Rays did lose.
At least Lowell has picked up where he left off in June (rather than post-ASB).
On second thought, 25.
I'd say 24 runs.
25 in the NL.
Why would there be a difference in the NL? It's still 9 guys...
Uch, I come home to THIS? I think I will go outside and stand in the remnants of Gustav rather than watch this....
We're in the middle of the turd floater that is Tropical Storm Hanna. 3 inches of rain here in 4 hours.
Fucking white Flag re-earning his nickname.
Is it Hanna or Gustav, Ish? It is just incredible out there.
What the fuck is going on? Did our pitchers all sleep on their arms incorrectly last night?
Why would there be a difference in the NL? It's still 9 guys...
I'm just guessing that it was PLAYERS rather than guys in the lineup. Since the starting pitcher doesn't hit in the AL, it'd be 24 runs if every player available scored a run.
I hate when we're the team giving up batting practice.
Is it Hanna or Gustav, Ish? It is just incredible out there.
Hanna. Came up the east coast from the Carolinas. Winds will pick up after midnight.
Water in our basement, and the wallpaper is curling off the walls in our dining room.
It's Hanna out there.
At least the Rays lost....
We're in the middle of the turd floater that is Tropical Storm Hanna. 3 inches of rain here in 4 hours.
Funny. I'm in Myrtle Beach, and they really hyped up Hanna here, and in the end we barely got anything. Some wind and rain, nothing out of the ordinary.
