Red Sox - 100 000 000 - 1 3 0Tampa Bay Rays - 2008 AL Champions.
Rays - 000 110 10x - 3 6 1
Lester was good (7-6-3-0-8, 107), but Garza -- named the MVP of the series -- was better (7-2-1-3-9, 118).
Dustin Pedroia lined a home run to left in the first -- 6th pitch of the game -- and David Ortiz followed with a walk. Garza retired the next two Sox and outside of hitting FY in the third and walking him in the sixth, no other Sock reached base until there was one out in the seventh.
By that time, the Rays led 3-1. Lester did set down the first nine Rays batters, but a two-out double from Evan Longoria in the fourth tied the game and three straight hits to open the fifth -- Willy Aybar double, Dioner Navarro single, Rocco Baldelli single -- gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. Aybar donged to start the seventh to give the Rays a two-run lead.
Boston tried to rally. After Kevin Youkilis popped to shortstop to start the seventh, JD Drew walked on four pitches and Jason Bay singled. After a mound visit from Joe Maddon, Garza -- working slowly -- got Mark Kotsay to fly to right and then struck out Jason Varitek on a changeup in the dirt.
In the eighth, Alex Cora batted -- Tito was not very Assassiny tonight -- and grounded to shortstop. Jason Bartlett did not charge the ball and it clanked off his glove for an error. Maddon went to the bullpen -- repeatedly. He used four relievers in the inning. Dan Wheeler allowed a single to right from Coco Crisp but got FY on a routine fly to left. JP Howell came in and got Ortiz to ground to second (on seven pitches) and Coco was forced. Chad Bradford fell behind Yook 3-0, battled back to a full count, and walked him. Then David Price came in and struck out Drew on a 1-2 check swing.
Price -- who began the year in the lowly Florida State League -- came back out for the ninth. Jason Bay (cbbfbf) walked, but Price struck out Kotsay (ffbbc) and Varitek (bsfbs). Jed Lowrie pinch-hit for Cora and grounded a 0-1 pitch right to Akinori Iwamura, who grabbed the ball on a high hop and raced to second for the Red-Sox-season-ending force.
The Rays and Phillies will play Game 1 of the World Series at the Trop on Wednesday night.

Fact: Tampa Bay is
The Red Sox have won nine consecutive ALCS elimination games. Tonight, they go for #10.
Kevin Youkilis:
It's amazing. It's really amazing the games we play, and how much fun it's been. When we're all old and our children are all grown up, we'll sit around and meet up and talk about games like the game the other day. It's a wild ride, and we're very spoiled.Jonathan Papelbon admits he's "pretty beat up". His fastball was only 92-93 mph last night.
For me, in these things, if I don't have my A-plus fastball, I'd better have my A-plus mental approach and my A-plus headset. My head was right tonight.Hideki Okajima threw two scoreless innings last night -- the third time he has done so in this series.
From Josh Beckett's post-game interview:
Josh, you struggled in the postseason thus far, but tonight you looked like the Josh Beckett of 2003 and 2007.Also: Post-game Q&As from Maddon and Francona.
I don't know really if that's even a question. ...
The Clifford Floyd at-bat in the fourth --
Clifford?
Some of his friends call him that. ...
Joe Maddon:
We've got one more shot. We can truly teach ourselves a lesson. We can do something that will make an imprint on us for a long time. You sure can, Joe, and you will, but it's not going to be the good kind of imprint.
Evan Longoria makes no sense:
In my opinion, there'll be less pressure on anyone. We'll throw it out there and have fun. I think there was more pressure when we were up 3-to-1. There was pressure on us to end it. Elimination games are always pressure-packed. You feel you have to win them, and in that situation you start to press. Now it's back to 0-0, and we'll come out and play the way we've been playing all year.Dood, this is an elimination game! So start pressin'!
Clifford:
They're the World Series champs. You've got to take it from them. They know how to win. They stay poised in tough situations. That said, it's going to happen [tonight].Sean McAdam, Herald:
The Rays had spent the off day Friday swearing up and down that, nope, there wasn't going to be any sort of carryover effect from Game 5, and yep, they had already forgotten all about it and seemed almost offended by the line of questioning.***
Crushing loss? What crushing loss?
But defeats like Thursday's don't wash off in the shower. They stay with you. ...
The cracks are starting to show now. Arguably the best defensive team in the league during the season, the Rays have withered in the field in the last two games. ... The bullpen, so critical to the team's magic this season, suddenly looks vulnerable. ...
Game 7 comes tonight, the game the Rays didn't want. They have whiffed on two chances to put the Red Sox away for good and tonight they get their last chance.
It worked in 2004. It worked in 2007. It'll work in 2008.
One.
One game. One win. That's all.
Tonight.

This will not stand.
No panic yet. But nervous, for sure.
It's true that Casey did look terrible last time he PH.
This guy Baldelli must be getting tired.
ultrasound woonsocket.
my calmness has a rough edge, but I'm not sweating yet.
Like your attitude, SoSock.
well that's bad
jeemer up ?!?!?!?
I also can't be sick over this game. A few nights ago we thought it was all over in Game 5. We pushed them all the way back to Game 7, and we're only 2 runs behind. Our pitcher's doing great, but so is theirs.
jeemer working quickly....
oki and masterson warming for us
wheeler and someone else for them
lgirl, i love yr perspective checks :)
ok, we need a big time rally, and we have just the right people coming up to do it.
Crisp - struggling?
Assholes
But I DON'T want to see Cora.
OK, this has to be our time to score. PH anyone for Cora, and go from there.
So now we really need an 07 game 7 8th inning.
Make it so.
If Garza comes out, then look for LBJ to pinch hit for einstein.
Plenty of time to get more than two runs.
time to flick that fucking switch
good guys up for us!

diet coke, thank you
i know some people find it irritating, but we all cope in our own way. :)
I think Cora is expected to bat.
Whatever..
Backs to the wall...that's when we do our best work.
Well, I've got quite a beat going. Garza's been so good tonight... I feel like we had the wrong man up in a big spot in the 7th, but we'll have the right men coming up. They need to get something big going, though.
Just... oi. I tend to have a short term memory in baseball, and I also consider the odds quite a bit.
So we'll just watch.
ish, maybe this is the bird you're thinking of?
Gross in right... Hit it to right!
Gross in! That could be good. I figured Baldelli was tiring.
Hypochondriac Orr out. I like Gross in RF.
Maybe Cora will surprise here.
cora????????
the assassin is dead
Garza still in. We should be able to work with that.
Where the fuck is the assasin?
Einstein is batting?
are you fucking kidding me?
117 pitches for Garza.
garza here
cora here
bah
efd, nope. Maybe it doesn't even exist. But that doesn't matter right now.
HELL YES.
SPARK!
Einstein!!
OPENING!!!!!
Bartlett got some butterflies!
THAT'S HOW IT STARTS!!!
here we go!
OK, there's our break! If Cora is on...
Pinch runner NOW
Bring LBJ in to PR?
Well, a hopeful smolder. lol. C'mon guys!
Bullpen time...
Dan Wheeler time.
LIFE!
tito catches a fucking break
Aw, too bad. I wanted to see Garza get pounded.
Ok, pitch runner now.
Wheeler comin in. To get smoked.
Castig: "Garza was sensational. One of the best games pitched against the Red Sox in ALCS history."
I want some fucking unearned runs!
That means it can only get easier to tie this fucker up, right?
dude we can hit wheeler
tie it up and pull away
Who knew it would have been their ace against our ace in Games 3 and 7? Garza looks so much better than Shields.
But that's all done now. New pitcher. More butterflies. Patient Red Sox.
KEEP THE LINE MOVING.
bad 1st pitch
nice start, Wheeler!
I wouldn't mind an Ococ "Baker rally killer".
Crisp should bunt.
dont think about game 5 wheeler.
No PR? Where is Tito?
Oh wait no nm.
Why is Cora at first?
A stolen base would remove the dp.
big spot wheeler -- BIG SPOT -- better not think about G5
where's lyndon???
How did Cora get on?
I had to take some scissors back to Cat and cme back to find s in commercial break.
(I didn't run with them)
OcOc. Do what you did the other night. Just hang in there.
bear down OCOC -- like on thursday!
oh anf fuck you wheeler
Bad Chadford warming...
E6, SoSock.
where's lyndon???
Don't PR for Cora, save it
CORA: E6 - should been an easy out
Oh snap. Tying run on!
yeah! 2 effing on!
OCOC@!!!!
YES!!!!!
STEP 2!
YES!!! Loving my Crispies!
Rising!!!
IT IS OOOOOOOON!
I'd doubt a scrotum bunt. But we'll see.
and the line moves, except if LBJ had been running we would now have 1st and 3rd.
Would LBJ have made it to 3rd?
and wheeler's shirt collar GET A LITTLE FUCKING TIGHTER
LASER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUCK YEAH, show your shit.
I want a fuck yeah dong.
where's lyndon???
Ococ! And now, the laser show!
Time for some MVP like hit here.

MAKE THEM PAY
Damn.
time for the BEDAZZLER!
pitching change.
Dear Papi
DO IT!
Thank you
RSN
I still don't get why LBJ is not on the basepaths. He would have been on third and home after the sac fly.
Mellotron going to Miller this time? Or is it HOOOOW-WOOOOOL?
Maddon apparently learned something from game 5.
LOL The Bedazzler!!!
David Price and Bradford warming... Howell's coming in for Tiz.
I totally agree with what Amy said. I don't know why Tito didn't pinch-run for Cora. Idiotic move that cost them a run. For sure, LBJ's on 3rd and scores on the Pedroia fly.
will howell pitch like ginger or mary ann?
Ortiz could single and we'd need Ellsbury to run here. I don't think you PR for Cora w/ 3-1.
By the way, I'm one of those people who lurks all the time, never says anything. We have got to win this thing NOW!!!
Tiz vs. Howell: 2 for 13, 1 HR
AB of the year right now
I hope Howell pitches like Gilligan.
I hope Howell pitches like Gilligan.
and the skipper has to take him out.
Hi, Westcoastsox. I remember you from last year.
I hope Papi hits like Papi.
i guess the video is now saying "shake cowbells"
"Repeat as necessary."
gapper gets 2?
hit it near gross
My stomach is in knots.
Shit, I hate this feeling. Papi is up and I don't expect something good to happen...
Stuff of legend right here. Either way.
Shit, I hate this feeling. Papi is up and I don't expect something good to happen...
Really? Whenever Papi is up, I'm at least open to the possibility of a miracle.
Stay alive, Papi. Wait for him to make a mistake.
My stomach is in knots also.
Open to it... I used to expect it.
FUCK
Ofer - I feel the same way. But I feel good about Yook being next.
Brad Chadford to face Yook.
Will LBJ run now?
we need some sweaty redemption
Up to Youk to save the day and give us at least a run.
Well it is now up to Youk!
Oh my that was the worst slide ever. He would've been safe if he just put his hand on the bag...
Damn. How obvious is it that he would have ben safe if he had gone straight to the bag.
Really, tho, he has no way to know that. Just doing what's natural.
he's easily safe if his foot hits bag instead of going past it--but he was STILL safe!
We're always open to something happening. But we can't have the same expectations from Ortiz any more, unfortunately. Not this season, anyway. Maybe next year.
Price and Balfour warming.
I'd imagine Price is up for the 9th.
Even one run can mean so much right now.
YOOK or bust.
let's just say, if it was a finish line, he is safe. But he did not touch the bag until after ball in glove. But why does that not count as a "phantom tag" of the base?
Upton moves back in the outfield... Deepest he's been all series.
time for our team MVP YOOK -- sorry FY
Gross is right near the track in right.
Damn. That was ball four.
Eh, shouldn't have been swinging at that one.
But Ortiz will be off with this pitch.
YES
CHAMPS ON THE POND
FOR THE FIRESTARTER!!!!!!!!!
Bases are loaded for the FIRE.
David Price coming in!
yes! now we catch fire...
and *that* was ball four, too!
Hope, hope, hope and it is now time for some ON FIRE!!!
OK, full bases. And another pitching change?
How many more pitchers do they have left?
5th pitcher of the inning - coming up.
And On Fire viene
wow -- ballsy move to go to price.
but: THE PRICE IS WRONG,
BITCH!!!!!!
Maddon is buring a lot of pitchers in this inning.
Bases loaded for ON FIRE. My heart is beating, no doubt about that.
And Mellotron is really really micro-managing here. Wow.
Amy - they still have Kazmir!!!
lol
My throat is dry. Stomach in knots. Heart pounding.
Does it get any better than this?
SOSOCK:
WE ARE THE FUCKING RED SOX>
This will not stand.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Blood pressure skyrocketing...
So the big question here for Francona is... do you go all in right here? Taking out Ortiz and putting Ellsbury in to pinch-run? Or do you continue to save Ellsbury and keep Ortiz's bat in there?
nice footage of all the big fiery dongs!
Does Drew care?
That grand slam last season was also with two outs. Would be nice to see history repeat itself.
drew it
BIGGEST AB of the YEAR
cool and calm -
does anyone have a match?
lyndon's got to PR for papi - if papi's spot comes up again that that will at least we've tied
Ish - no PR now. I would have thought maybe when he was at 1st.
But with 2 down he should score from 2nd.
Damn it. Wait.
Fuckton's come back in shallow again
wow
fucking.
hell.
What a shit call
I think that was our chance, guys....
WHAT A HORSESHIT CALL
Well, we have now reached miracle time and I think it was a mistake to not Pr for einstein.
Goddammit.
I was about to shout a profanity, but then stopped, because I realized I didn't actually know any words dirty enough to sum up how I feel.
Not good.
But, we are not done yet.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
And we wasted all our good hitters in this inning. It's gonna take a miracle.
At least I'm able to decompress for a couple more minutes.
Price really is right. I'll fucking tell ya. You're gonna be a star, kid.
it wasn't the call.
where is the side shot of that - did not look like much of a swing from CF.
It has to be Papelbon here, right?
9th:
bay
kotsay
tek
cora
the umps are beating us here. no need to sound like whiny nyy fans.
I think that was our chance, guys....
I think we have three more, at least.
I meant calling him out on a swing.
Jeemer Time.
At least they used all their pitchers. What's it gonna be in the 9th, Ball Four?
That 'Tek at-bat has to be a huge question mark. Do you take the bat out of his hands tonight?
Was that supposed to have been in the zone, or did he say he went?
Either one seems like horseshit.
yes, there are three more. we play nine. at least.
I'd say Drew went.
At least they used all their pitchers. What's it gonna be in the 9th, Ball Four?
I'm guessing Price. No reason to take him out.
And yeah, that was a swing...
Price will probably come back out for the 9th, don't you think? He only faced one batter.
Late in the day, but evening all.
I would do several deals with the devil here to let our dead zone get these runs.
That has to be a record for most pitchers in a scoreless half inning
-Grant
Tek better not be batting this next inning unless it is to lay down a sac.
bay
kotsay
tek
in the 9th.
Or maybe we stop second guessing things and start thinking about the three batters coming up in the 9th. We've got Bay, Kotsay and fuck all.
The thing about the Tek AB (as we were saying earlier) is who do you put in for him? Casey? Not much of an improvement.
on a call that close, the home ump has to go to the third base ump. That's twice he called Drew out in this game a on a swing he couldn't possibly have seen either way
Whew. So Crispy.
We should have pinch hit ellsbury or lowrie or someone for tek in the 7th. sorry, i won't stop 2nd guessing lol
