ALCS 7: Rays 3, Red Sox 1

Red Sox - 100 000 000 - 1 3 0
Rays - 000 110 10x - 3 6 1
Tampa Bay Rays - 2008 AL Champions.

Lester was good (7-6-3-0-8, 107), but Garza -- named the MVP of the series -- was better (7-2-1-3-9, 118).

Dustin Pedroia lined a home run to left in the first -- 6th pitch of the game -- and David Ortiz followed with a walk. Garza retired the next two Sox and outside of hitting FY in the third and walking him in the sixth, no other Sock reached base until there was one out in the seventh.

By that time, the Rays led 3-1. Lester did set down the first nine Rays batters, but a two-out double from Evan Longoria in the fourth tied the game and three straight hits to open the fifth -- Willy Aybar double, Dioner Navarro single, Rocco Baldelli single -- gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. Aybar donged to start the seventh to give the Rays a two-run lead.

Boston tried to rally. After Kevin Youkilis popped to shortstop to start the seventh, JD Drew walked on four pitches and Jason Bay singled. After a mound visit from Joe Maddon, Garza -- working slowly -- got Mark Kotsay to fly to right and then struck out Jason Varitek on a changeup in the dirt.

In the eighth, Alex Cora batted -- Tito was not very Assassiny tonight -- and grounded to shortstop. Jason Bartlett did not charge the ball and it clanked off his glove for an error. Maddon went to the bullpen -- repeatedly. He used four relievers in the inning. Dan Wheeler allowed a single to right from Coco Crisp but got FY on a routine fly to left. JP Howell came in and got Ortiz to ground to second (on seven pitches) and Coco was forced. Chad Bradford fell behind Yook 3-0, battled back to a full count, and walked him. Then David Price came in and struck out Drew on a 1-2 check swing.

Price -- who began the year in the lowly Florida State League -- came back out for the ninth. Jason Bay (cbbfbf) walked, but Price struck out Kotsay (ffbbc) and Varitek (bsfbs). Jed Lowrie pinch-hit for Cora and grounded a 0-1 pitch right to Akinori Iwamura, who grabbed the ball on a high hop and raced to second for the Red-Sox-season-ending force.

The Rays and Phillies will play Game 1 of the World Series at the Trop on Wednesday night.

Fact: Tampa Bay is three two one games away from elimination.

The Red Sox have won nine consecutive ALCS elimination games. Tonight, they go for #10.

Kevin Youkilis:
It's amazing. It's really amazing the games we play, and how much fun it's been. When we're all old and our children are all grown up, we'll sit around and meet up and talk about games like the game the other day. It's a wild ride, and we're very spoiled.
Jonathan Papelbon admits he's "pretty beat up". His fastball was only 92-93 mph last night.
For me, in these things, if I don't have my A-plus fastball, I'd better have my A-plus mental approach and my A-plus headset. My head was right tonight.
Hideki Okajima threw two scoreless innings last night -- the third time he has done so in this series.

From Josh Beckett's post-game interview:
Josh, you struggled in the postseason thus far, but tonight you looked like the Josh Beckett of 2003 and 2007.

I don't know really if that's even a question. ...

The Clifford Floyd at-bat in the fourth --

Clifford?

Some of his friends call him that. ...
Also: Post-game Q&As from Maddon and Francona.

Joe Maddon:
We've got one more shot. We can truly teach ourselves a lesson. We can do something that will make an imprint on us for a long time.
You sure can, Joe, and you will, but it's not going to be the good kind of imprint.

Evan Longoria makes no sense:
In my opinion, there'll be less pressure on anyone. We'll throw it out there and have fun. I think there was more pressure when we were up 3-to-1. There was pressure on us to end it. Elimination games are always pressure-packed. You feel you have to win them, and in that situation you start to press. Now it's back to 0-0, and we'll come out and play the way we've been playing all year.
Dood, this is an elimination game! So start pressin'!

Clifford:
They're the World Series champs. You've got to take it from them. They know how to win. They stay poised in tough situations. That said, it's going to happen [tonight].
Sean McAdam, Herald:
The Rays had spent the off day Friday swearing up and down that, nope, there wasn't going to be any sort of carryover effect from Game 5, and yep, they had already forgotten all about it and seemed almost offended by the line of questioning.

Crushing loss? What crushing loss?

But defeats like Thursday's don't wash off in the shower. They stay with you. ...

The cracks are starting to show now. Arguably the best defensive team in the league during the season, the Rays have withered in the field in the last two games. ... The bullpen, so critical to the team's magic this season, suddenly looks vulnerable. ...

Game 7 comes tonight, the game the Rays didn't want. They have whiffed on two chances to put the Red Sox away for good and tonight they get their last chance.
***

It worked in 2004. It worked in 2007. It'll work in 2008.
One.

One game. One win. That's all.

Tonight.

Crisp flashes that gold glove again, oh thats right he was fragging robbed last year.

allan said...

fuck - he went.

gotta PH for tek and cora

(maybe let tek hit if there are 0 out?)

Red Sox Monster said...

Lowrie in for Tek? Your right, not many options.

laura k said...

definitely leave Price in, why not

and drew went

and we still have 3 more outs

Rob said...

I know it Joe, haha. I tried!

Close games are always going to be second-guessed. But they've recorded 24 outs. Not enough.

A Conformer said...

on a call that close, the home ump has to go to the third base ump. That's twice he called Drew out in this game a on a swing he couldn't possibly have seen either way

I agree, but that doesn't change the fact that Drew went.

s1c said...

Jeemer of course needs to get this last out or it will all be mute in the 9th.

Rob said...

I don't mind Lowrie coming in now, against a lefty. He's a much different hitter batting right handed.

thatdietcokegirl said...

Bay needs to homer to start off the 9th. Price will be rattled and he'll walk Kotsay. Then the dominos will start falling...

laura k said...

second guessing is sore losering

allan said...

crazy alcs -- why not b2b dongs from bay and kotsay??

i'll call that now!

chris said...

tek must come out regardless of the number of outs

Amy said...

OK, this is it.

Red Sox Monster said...

Okie's lovin' that high strike

A Conformer said...

Jeemer of course needs to get this last out or it will all be mute in the 9th.

It's all mute already, for me at least (:

Lord Lynch said...

Ah well. Nothing but our season at stake....

laura k said...

I'm down with that Bay doung.

thatdietcokegirl said...

WE ONLY NEED 2 RUNS.

RED SOX YOU CAN DO THIS.

Rob said...

I think it's fair to say we've felt just about every single feeling there is to feel in this series. And to a smaller extent, this game.

efd said...

nice work by Oki! Sox are still only 2 runs down.

SoSock said...

Yeah, I called horseshit, but right after I typed that I saw a replay and you can't argue it.

A Conformer said...

Man, Oki has been fucking great.

Lord Lynch said...

I effing hate watching tense baseball through bleary sore eyes at 4:30 in the morning.

Bay is actually due. It's just about the right time for him to do something big again.

laura k said...

Ish, you're right, it's been the full range. Every baseball everything has been in this series.

This kid can't be that good, can he?

Rob said...

laura k said...

efd, nice!

laura k said...

Amy, he's pretty great. Wish he was ours.

allan said...

so - is patrick having better luck scoring than the sox?

s1c said...

Amy - he is indeed a good young pitcher.

Rob said...

He's got a lot of Sabathia in him.

Amy said...

Whatever happens, it has been a great season, a great series. So why not smile?

Rob said...

That's about as far as Drew's bat went.

Lord Lynch said...

Went further than Drew!

laura k said...

Amy, you sound like me now.

I want to win, but I'm at peace.

Rob said...

Tying run to the plate!

Amy said...

Man on, tying run at plate!

Gambrinus said...

Lead-off walk? I'll take it!

allan said...

KOTSAY --- TYING RUN!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob said...

Unfortunately Kotsay has left 19 men this series.

Lord Lynch said...

Leaving our hope in the hands of Kotsay, Varitek and Cora.

Rob said...

That was a surprise bunt...

allan said...

BUNT????????????????
WTF?????????????

Dr. Jeff said...

i don't understand the bunt here when you are down 2.

s1c said...

Kotsay thought he had Longoria napping.

Rob said...

Yeah, the fucking hole in the lineup. But it is what it is. We'll work with what we have.

efd said...

not sure I agree with bunting when down by 2

Jere said...

Kotsay still lookin for that first dong

Rob said...

At least do something to knock out Price. He's on a short leash.

SoSock said...

Great freaking series though.

laura k said...

don't hate me for this, but somewhere inside me, i'm happy for them. if they could beat us, they are a hell of a team.

i hope they win the world series.

Amy said...

I feel so much better than I would have if we had lost Game 5 7-0.

chris said...

came up short but they gave us another exciting season. thanks red sox.

Gambrinus said...

Ok, well, oh well.

That sucked, but it was still a damn good season. And Allan was right, the last 2 games have basically been free baseball.

But still. Shit.

Jere said...

we were real close this year

laura k said...

What Ofer said. I also expected to win. But it was a great series. Great ALDS, great ALCS.

Lord Lynch said...

In this team's credit, it never quit. That they took it this far showed their heart was never weak.

Cheers for everything people. I shall sleep through the World Series.

Joe Grav said...

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings. And then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops - and leaves you to face the fall, alone."

-A. Bartlett Giamatti

Great season all. Loved chatting with you. Can't wait for our JOS1 outing next year.

Dr. Jeff said...

Bummer. That was a tough loss. Anyway, great season to get this far, we made them sweat. Many thanks to Joy of Sox for helping us get through another year. See what Theo can do in the off-season.

laura k said...

And thank goodness this isn't happening at Fenway.

Amy said...

We gave them a run for their money at least!

I am sad, but somehow feel at peace that our team fought hard and lost to a worthy opponent.

thatdietcokegirl said...

Good point Amy.

I'm not happy for them tho lol. I guess I'm a sore loser but meh. I really thought they were gonna win.

Gambrinus said...

I always have a dilemma: do you want the team that beat you to go on and win it all, to show that you were only beaten by the best? Or do you want them to fail miserably for revenge?

M@ said...

Sorry, guys. But a hell of a series for Boston! Losing with pride beats everything but winning.

SoSock said...

Go NL - these guys just haven't been around long enough to be W-S Champs.

Plus there is the undeniable fact that these announcers the last week or so have made me despise the team even more.

allan said...

I feel so much better than I would have if we had lost Game 5 7-0.

Yep.

I figured the year was over on Thursday.

Shit.

Now it's over for real.

...

So when is TRUCK DAY?

laura k said...

I feel so much better than I would have if we had lost Game 5 7-0.

Very very true. Me too, big time.

tim said...

What in the fuck, tito?

A Conformer said...

I guess there's nothing left to do but thank our great hosts for yet another great year of game threads and posts.

And it was an amazing season and amazing series. Can't complain (too much).

efd said...

so we got two tight, exciting games (plus an amazing 3 inning comeback) on house money, as Allan said yesterday.

And as I think I said pre-7th on Thursday, it's not like we lost to some flukey team on a hot streak... they led the toughest division in baseball for most of the season.

allan said...

like yook said -- we're spoiled.

we've been blessed. there is no greater time in history to be a red sox fan.

so we'll get ready for 2009

laura k said...

It was great sharing the season with you all. I hope to see as many of you as possible for JoS1 in Boston.

Oh geez, now I'm getting upset. I didn't think I would but...

Amy said...

LOL, Allan. Truck day is how many months away?

Lots of hot stove stuff til then, and also a WS to watch.

I think the Rays will win, but for my cousin's sake, I'll be rooting for the Phillies.

Joe Grav said...

I'll probably be more upset later.

Right now I'm half-happy for the free baseball, half stunned, and half thinking about the Lost Girl. Yes, that's three halves, I know.

Later on the hurt of the end of the season will hit. Probably when the WS starts.

thatdietcokegirl said...

I want them to win. So the Red Sox don't look bad. I think they'll beat Philly easily. They are riding a fucking Evita rainbow high right now. Little bastards...

;)

Lord Lynch said...

As whenever I visit to see my future wife, I go to see the Phillies, I want them to win.

Next season, I'll be married with a Yankee fan living in my house in London.....

Amy said...

Don't get upset, Laura. Baseball goes on all year--just more quietly.

And as soon as we get the 09 schedule, we can start planning for the big rendezvous at Fenway!

laura k said...

Thanks M@ :)

Plus there is the undeniable fact that these announcers the last week or so have made me despise the team even more.

I don't hate them at all. They're a really good young team. I hated the announcers, but they're not the team.

allan said...

these fuckers might as well finish the story. ... phuck the phils.

SoSock said...

Although I will be hoping for a GOOD World Series. I always do. The only time I pull for a blowout in the Series is if the Sox or the Yankees are in it.

s1c said...

All good things must end and so ends this series, but I think I will still root for the Phillies.

Gambrinus said...

Well, I think the Rays have a real chance, anyway. I'm not sure, though, because I never thought the Phillies would be so strong in the post-season.

But I'm really glad we took them down to the wire. They outplayed us, and there's no shame in that.

efd said...

yes, thanks to Allan and Laura for providing a home to the best Sox blog and community on the web.

Bring on the hot stove! (well, after the WS of course.)

laura k said...

Thanks Amy. Just a little choked up. I always am at the end of the season, whether we win or lose.

Amy said...

I will really miss all of you again. Thanks, Laura and Allan, for once again making my season. And to all the regulars (and the lurkers), it's been a great ride. Thanks for all the laughs.

A Conformer said...

I always have a dilemma: do you want the team that beat you to go on and win it all, to show that you were only beaten by the best? Or do you want them to fail miserably for revenge?

I'll be rooting for the Rays, but because I think they deserve it (if there is such a thing). And it's a great story. And their fall from glory next year will be all the bigger if they're the WS champs (;

tim said...

Good for them, Aunt Mabels.

Not gonna win many when you only get 3 hits. Ah well. Til next year.

allan said...

LOL, Allan. Truck day is how many months away?

Less than 4!

Joe Grav said...

Thanks for having me at your house this year, bloghosts. :D

Lord Lynch said...

Anyway, at 10 to 5 in the morning, I bid you all a very fond farewell and be safe and well over the close season.

You've been great fun and a pleasure to share games with.

Joe Grav said...

My favorite memory from this year:

Being present at Fenway when Jason Bay scored the winning run on 8/1.

Amy said...

It's hard to believe there will be no Sox games to look forward to at night.

And gee, my daughter hasn't called yet. She must be upset.

nick said...

Nothing too much new, but as sucky as this is I'm OK with it. Mind you, not remotely as OK as actually winning, but... They had an awesome year; sox had a solid year. FKR eked it out in the post-season, just like the regular season.

If you're not gonna make it to the World Series, you might as well make it this close. Take that MFY! (who?).

Thank you Allan and Laura!

laura k said...

AL all the way. The Rays have defied all odds and all the naysayers, I want to see them go all the way.

JeffM said...

Good series, very good season.

Thank you Allan, for another quality season of lurking.

allan said...

fooking price started the year in the lowly florida state league - ends up saving the game that wins the pennant. that is some crazy shit

Rob said...

This didn't surprise me. All season I've looked at Matt Garza as a better pitcher than James Shields or Red Dot.

There was something about David Price. Had a feeling he would come in for a key situation...

Told you in Game 5 this Rays team does not play by the rules. Kept telling people I wouldn't be surprised if they lost Game 6 but ended up winning Game 7. That's just how they roll. That's how they got here. When you think it was a tipping point, they tip the other way.

So right now, I have a little bit of sweat trickling down my back. A small sense of calm. At least my heart has slowed down. Aside from the little things that we will spend the next few days second-guessing, there was nothing huge tonight like there were in years past.

Two similar teams coming into this thing, with the Rays slightly better... And that's how this series ended up, with the Red Sox having the tying run at the plate. The speed of the bat, the location, all could have varied by so, so little, and this game could have been tied.

This was the stuff of legend. And it should be a fantastic World Series, from the casual baseball fan's perspective.

Today was windy with a mix of clouds and sun. We turned our furnace on for the first time this morning. The temperature here never reached 50°F. It felt like we had turned a corner. And now, we have.

So now we begin second season in our lives in one year. The offseason.

laura k said...

I'm glad to read all these comments. I thought I was the only one who felt this way, nice to see I'm not alone.

SoSock said...

As Ofer said - thanks to A & L for another great season of game threads.
And a special thanks from me to ALL the JoSers who have done so much for Cat & I.
And yes, it turned out to be a GREAT series. Would have been even more fun if we had won, but it was still a GREAT series.

efd said...

put me down in the Rays column, for a combination of the reasons already expressed. At the heart of it is that I'm an AL fan (with one obvious exception), and once you get past the bitterness of this loss they really are a talented team. I'd like to see them complete the worst-to-first comeback.

allan said...

now i gotta check out ebay for a 2008 AL champs red sox shirt!!!

Joe Grav said...

I'll miss reading all the comments at the end of the night if I missed a game thread.

But we're only months from them starting again.

Definitely a success, Allan! I only came along late August last year. This year I was here from April and before. It really did make the season for me. Thanks for answering all my questions, regardless of how dumb they were.

Thanks to all you awesome commenters who I've never met (that is all of you) who've made this year so much fun. I look forward to JoS1.

I'm just going to have to catch up on lots of good sox-related reading in the off-season (1918, dirty water, more).

A Conformer said...

mvp? upton, garza??

Should be Upton. I was thinking earlier that if the Sox win it, Upton should still be the MVP.

Amy said...

Yeah, Lurkers---come out of hiding. We can always use fresh blood around here...but be sure to bring your sense of humor!

Amy said...

OK, I guess I am off to bed before midnight. I won't miss going to work bleary eyed.

Talk to you all soon, right? The games may be over, but the analysis goes on and on!

OH, and now I can start spending more time reading WMTC. :)

The best thing for me - the 7-run comeback that kept Fenway Park from being the scene of their celebration. I wrote the next morning in a comment that probably no one saw "At the very least, no matter what happens now, we don't have to watch them celebrate on our field" I always have hated that more than anything.

Rob said...

don't hate me for this, but somewhere inside me, i'm happy for them. if they could beat us, they are a hell of a team.

Yeah. They won the right way. The Red Sox lost the right way. At least, that's how it feels.

And Joe, sometimes the math doesn't need to add up to make sense.

A Conformer said...

Good night, to all those that are still here. Talk to you soon.

I'm disappointed but not crushed. I don't think I can root for the Rays, but respect them and they way they did things.

Another thank you to RS and LG for what was a very enjoyable season of talk and sharing.

Best,

Jeff

A lot of things loomed large coming into this postseason, which in the end, brought the Red Sox to a point where they were close. Very, very close. But not close enough.

You look at this ALCS roster... Beckett throwing 91-93, Lowell headed for the operating table... Hell, even Slügo. All season the Red Sox have stepped up when injuries cropped up, but you look at this postseason Red Sox team, and the holes became just large enough to be too large.

Castig's pulling for the Rays. I'm up in the air. I want to see a good series. I want to see the Rays have their hands full. If they win after a hard fight, that's fantastic.

I want some World Series theatre.

Thanks all, catch ya later.

With all those injuries, what a run. We'll be back in it next year. Thanks, my Canadian hosts, for another year of a terrific website.

I think I'll get my blog up for some winter game threads for the local winter teams. I'm not looking to make a full-time job out of it, but we'll try out some game threads... Why not tomorrow night? We shall see.

Dale Arnold, on the Rays celebration: They don't know what to do!

Cool audio montage on WRKO to close out the season. And then Green Fields of the Mind. The saddest parts.

recap on RKO now.

This is so cool. I wish I had taped this.

*cap tip to Garza and Price*

The Sox can beat anyone when helthy and really played great despite the injuries but just got slightly outpitched in that one crucial game.

They went down fighting at least...Game 5 was a great memory for sure.

I hope the Rays beat the Phillies now if nothing else than to prove that the AL East is toughest division in baseball.

Plus, Brett Myers is one of the biggest assholes in baseball and I REALLY don't want to see him get a ring.

The Philly fans deserve it more than the TB bandwagoners but I still have to root for the Rays a bit now.

Thank you Red Sox for another great and memorable season. Get 'em next year!

Castig was choking up a little bit when reading his yearly passage from Green Fields of the Mind... That's the part when the offseason really sinks in. The feelings of looking back at the summer and looking forward at the winter. Meh.

But we will press on.

i think the hardest thing for all-around-boston fans is that three teams' seasons ended with such disappointing final games after very teasing highs - the Pats going 18-1, the Bruins falling after that epic game 6, and the Sox coming oh-so-close to the big comeback.

Castig was choking up a little bit when reading his yearly passage from Green Fields of the Mind...

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

But luckily the wheels keep turning. And as far as Boston goes, all four of their major sports franchises are forces to be reckoned with. In this town there never really is an off-season if you like all the sports. There is something for everyone, and these days, it's bound to be exciting.

Personally I think it's much better to come close than to get blown out in the last game. I would have been a lot more bummed out if the season had ended after game 5 without the comeback.

Yeah it still sucks that they couldn't have won tonight and completed it but at least they have more dignity and respect from the Rays this way.

Here's the end of Castiglione's sign-off. The piece from the poem is around the 4:30. Toward the beginning is his call from Game 5, with the crazy un-Joe-like call at the end.

(And just ignore the video--I always just tape whatever's in front of me on the table.)
