SoSHer draven085 says that Kazmir is
allowing significantly more flyballs than in years past and his line drive rate has never been higher in the big leagues. His strikeout rate also dipped [from 2007 to 2008] by .6 K/9 while his BB/9 rose .25. A BABIP of .275 and a strand rate of 82.5% helped masked some of his disappointing season but there's little reason to think this is the same pitcher who has often dominated the Sox over the past couple of years. ... I don't think there's any reason to be nervous about facing him.
MLB:
In the Red Sox's last 12 post-season games (from 2007 ALCS 5 to last night), the starting pitchers have a 1.93 ERA (74.1 IP, 16 ER).
The Globe profiles Kazmir. ... Joe Maddon said he's cool with his decisions to give the green light on 3-0 to both Evan Longoria in the sixth and Carlos Pena in the eighth.

The NLCS is off today. Brett Myers of the Phillies is only the fourth pitcher since 1919 to get three hits in a post-season game (and the eighth overall).

Dinner!

Pedroia from that SoSH pics thread. Hilarious.

Globe says he's hoping for a return in the WS.

Shots will be a bit later tonight, but they'll still be effective. Don't do 'em without me!

Happy Happy! Joy Joy!
I just checked the schedule and I see the Sox aren't playing Wednesday no matter what. Taj Mahal is coming to our sleepy little burg that night so now there is no conflict.

I can't decide if I should stay home (this is the responsible choice) and watch the game or if I should go down to Thom's - especially since Jere will be doing the book signing thing.

I'm feeling very lazy though and the lower east side feels very far away right now.

That would definitely win for me. Then when the game ends, you're already home.

Happy Happy! Joy Joy!

Very cool! And I can go to a meeting with a clear conscience, not missing either meeting or game.

Since this is obviously the most important detail in making your decision, I'll tell you that I'll probably be there tonight. We could do a mini-JoS gathering.

BACK!

I taped the game last night, and got home from the wedding - barely made it through the first inning, was falling asleep. I stopped it to go do something else, and the channel was on SportsNet so when I stopped it I saw the score on the ticker on the bottom. Was happy about it but pissed that I ruined it. Oh well, probably for the best. FF'ed through the game and saw the two RBIs and at some point realized it was a no-hitter. That was promptly broken up, then I slept for a solid 10 hours.

Back tonight tho and gearin up for a great game!

I'll be partaking in the Shots = Victory! event as well as the When Tim Cooks Fancy Food It Usually Results In A Red Sox Win event.

Sarah Haendler said...

Oh man, Jere and Conformer? Hard to say no!

Turns out though that Dave wants to spend the evening with me and does NOT want to go to the bar. I explained that this will still pretty much involve watching me watching the game, but he was undeterred. We're going to run out and get something to eat and then come home for the game.

Send my regrets to Jere!

laura k said...

Ofer, you're in NYC? Wow, I'm jealous, wish I could hang out at Thom's with you all tonight.

Although if I were there, I'd be very likely to stay home, like Sarah.

Globe: Drew's absence has nothing to do with Drew's health, either his long-ailing back or his right shoulder.
Drew is 1 for 7 with three strikeouts and a walk against Kazmir. Crisp is hitting 9 for 30 with three doubles.
Tito: "I really wanted Coco to play. I didn’t want to take Ellsbury out of the leadoff spot. So we can have J.D. sitting over there kind of knowing that they’re going to use Balfour. Maybe at one of the most pivotal points, having J.D. sitting over there will make them think twice. Maybe it won’t."

Rut roh - Cora might play Monday.

allan said...

Good Q&As from Tito and Maddon this afternoon. Maddon agrees with Flo about the Rays' "faces".

Beckett = Confidence

Beckett is going to kick some ass tonight. 8 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 7 K.

Just did mine, so I think we're good.

tim said...

I've got the TBS on mute as well, due to my dad listening to Quicksilver Messenger Service. Much better than TBS though.

allan said...

on radio, morgan's inability to speak coherently is very evident.

tim said...

Red dot sighting. And we are ready to go!

Gonna duck out of this thread rather early for a bit to enjoy my prime rib.

The farm I'm working on sold a couple of our Belgians to a vineyard in Walla Walla. The winemaster, Christoph, gave us a lot of wine in the exchange.

We drank one of the white wines last night and it was amazing! I don't know what is left to drink around here, maybe some gross coffee liquor, but I'll take a shot.

Kazmir really hasn't been good the past month or two, has he?

Time for the Captain to hit a dong

Kazmir's been pretty mediocre since his mid-season DL stint, iirc.

allan said...

surprise me, capt.

Oh well.

Tony said...

Ugh. The Cap'n didn't make it happen.

Still, 2 runs!

Pepe Lepew said...

38 pitches in the first inning.

Debating on whether to open up the 07 Championship t-shirt that's still in the bag.
Think I'll save it for the W-S so I've got my same Tarheel shirt from last night (and they beat Notre Dame today!) and I'm trying to remember if I had on the Game hat or the Black W-S Champions hat.
Bob will know and he should be here any minute.
Critical shit here you know :)

tim said...

Yeah hes a swell dude for some stuff, sosock.

Like cutting that prime rib i earlier mentioned. The sound of the knife means its DINNER TIME!

Time to watch Josh snipe these fucks while devouring some flesh

Benjamin said...

Any thoughts on the recent polling that the Tories are imploding thanks to the recent economic turmoils?

allan said...

L has finally outed herself as thinking there will be a liberal minority. That seems crazy two weeks ago, not so much now. Not sure if the gap can be closed by Tuesday. Not sure how wide the gap truly is, though.

Benjamin said...

Canada should really get rid of first-past-the-post rider elections in a multiparty system. It's silly enough to have that system down here in a two party country.

Tony said...

Take a seat, chump.

Pena's trying to bunt? Sweet Jesus.

Benjamin said...

Should've bunted. :(

Pepe Lepew said...

Phew. Stayed in.

Tony said...

Blech. Pena took that for a ride. I'm actually surprised it didn't get out.

Benjamin said...

So basically Longoria's done squat since he hit those couple dongs in that ALDS game?

allan said...

nice curve!! let's get that 3rd out quicker than dot did.

Benjamin said...

Well fuck me.

Tony said...

Well.

We're not getting 07 Beckett tonight.

Pepe Lepew said...

Oop. That one didn't stay in.

Benjamin said...

Who the hell's talking about momentum in the first inning?

Tony said...

Phew, no more damage.

Fucking Longoria.

Benjamin said...

At least it only took 20 pitches.

allan said...

2 out rally time!!!

Tony said...

Blech. What a crappy half inning.

Is it just me or is Bellsbury TRYING to hit flares every time he's up?

Tony said...

Holy SHIT that curve was vicious.

SoSock said...

OK, we're settled in now. Bob has confirmed hat it was the black hat, and we've switched from Corona to wine tonight since it suddenly got a little chilly today.

allan said...

L email: "put the glasses/bottle in the fridge, i'm on my way home!"

How was that NOT caled a strike?

SoSock said...

Tony said...

Sit down, Floyd.

allan said...

sit down, corpse of floyd

Amy said...

Allan, you still sick today?

allan said...

no - i am well.

switched shifts so i was in at 8 AM today. then left at 7:15 - 45 minutes early!

L says josh will pitch better once she gets home and we do shots. i hope she hurries

Benjamin said...

"It was looking awfully bleak after half an inning here, down two."

If you can't handle being down two runs in the fucking first inning, get out of my office.

Amy said...

I gave the kittens some catnip. I think they are as high as I am.

Amy said...

Good work arrangment, Allan. I am so glad that games 3 and 4 are not on nights I teach. So I can see the Sox sweep.

Tony said...

Wow, Gross chased the shit out of that one.

allan said...

and if the series goes 6 or 7 games, i'll switch shifts next sat and sun!

SoSock said...

Amy - I like your thought process

allan said...

just have to buy my co-worker several bottles of red wine!!!!

Amy said...

I always figure why NOT be optimistic? It's better than being negative, right, SoSock?

allan said...

OUTS, josh, OUTS!!!!!!!!!

Benjamin said...

Sit.

Runs, please.

Amy said...

Looks good. Time to go ahead.

SoSock said...

Wait, did I hear someone mention that the Sox won't play Wed.?
Of course I think they'll win it on Tue. but if not - do they get an extra off-day?

SoSock said...

Optimism Rules :)

Tony said...

Stupid blogger.com.

Yes, there's an extra off day in the 3 Boston games. There was an off day in the 3 Cleveland games last year, too. No idea why. Another brilliant MLB idea!

And Beckett seems to have found his rhythm.

allan said...

yeah - extra off day for the bos games. mon/tues/thurs

Benjamin said...

TBS crew can't work up any enthusiasm.

Tony said...

FY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big slumpbuster!

Benjamin said...

Would've been a double at Fenway.

Benjamin said...

Kill another rally, Papi.

Tony said...

Wow, this crowd is stunned. Stunned with a capital STUN.

allan said...

Kazmir = He cooked.

Tony said...

Ortiz with another walk. Kazmir looks like he has no desire to deal with him. Don't understand why, since Tizzle's been so ice cold this postseason.

allan said...

time for the sultan to attack.

allan said...

bradford up

Benjamin said...

Bradford warming. Me likey.

Amy said...

That would have been a HR in Philadelphia.

Tony said...

I really thought Youk had a dinger there.

Benjamin said...

This time hold the line, Beckett.

Tony said...

Man, kinda surprised the last two guys tried to go the other way after Bay and FY had such success pulling it.

allan said...

PC

JB: 20-22 = 42
SK: 38-13-20 = 71

Benjamin said...

Announcers surprised Bay can both run and watch the ball at the same time.

Amy said...

But was he struggling to make the catch?

Benjamin said...

Fuck you, Upton, Beckett, and TBS.

allan said...

Oy.

line not held

Amy said...

Shit, why do they say "deep into the night" with such enthusiasm? I hate them.

Tony said...

What the fuck? Did I fall through a wormhole and end up in 2006?

Benjamin said...

"Watch Varitek's reaction."

He tried to catch the pitch? Better announcers, please.

Benjamin said...

Did I fall through a wormhole and end up in 2006?

I'd take the 2006 Sox against the 2006 Rays if we can switch back by the WS.

Amy said...

Shit shit. Beckett??

Tony said...

Dear God. These guys are sitting and waiting.

Rob said...

Evening, everyone. I retract my previous statement about Beckett being an ace. This postseason he has fallen to at least a #2. Maybe a 3. He's just not the same pitcher when he's throwing 93 rather than 96.

Rob said...

We look at Beckett and think he'll be back to 2007 form. 92 mph Beckett is a better pitcher still than Paul Byrd would be.

Tony said...

This is horrible. Beckett's clearly not 100% if he's just giving them pitches to tag like this.

SoSock said...

Such unbridled enthusiasm. Just how damn unprofessional can you be?

s1c said...

The glee from Chip is really starting to set my teeth on edge.

Rob said...

Good game to watch, innit, CC?

SoSock said...

YES - EAT THAT CRAWFORD!

Tony said...

Well, that's a way to get out of the inning.

Time for the offense to get back to work!

Jake of All Trades said...

As Manny yelled to Brett Myers, "If you don't throw 95, don't throw it there."

allan said...

crawford chekcing out chicks in the stands -- and is picked off.

s1c said...

B-fly - "I think the announcers are Rays fan"

Me - Good thought.

Rob said...

Luckily the players don't hear nor care about what Chip Caray says or how he says it. It doesn't matter how loud you yell, Chip, you're not going to make any difference to the outcome of this game.

Benjamin said...

Beckett and Kazmir have something in common in that they were previously dominant but lately disappointing.

Amy said...

S1C, you have one smart kid.

Rob said...

Dale Arnold, on Crawford: "I'm not sure what he was looking at..."

I liked Allan's answer.

tim said...

Fuck you Chip. Motherfucking assholes suck ass shit. I hate you fucking TBS. I thought FOX was bad but fuck.

Went to get the radio and turned it on and heard Miller call the pickoff. It happened about 10 seconds later on TV. So eff that idea. Guess I'll just drink more to deal with this, and bitch about it on here.

Amy said...

Is Laura home yet? Time for some Torontian shots to get us back in the lead.

Rob said...

You know those moments where one of your parents would say something very unlike themselves, and very funny, enough to make your drink come out of your nose?

I was noticing how slow Tek was swinging the bat his last time up. My father said, "Heidi likes it slow."

tim said...

Does anyone have the MLB RADIO package online? If so, can you let me know how the delay is (and if I can listen to Castiglione).

Thanks

Amy said...

Or is it Torontonian?

Rob said...

Tim, mute the TV and turn on some tunes.

allan said...

She is. Getting settled. Shots will be done btw innings.

We are happily dealing with the delay. Compared to TBS, Morgan is benign - like a retarded kid babbling.

Amy said...

Your father said that, Ish!?! Whoa, scary to think he said that in front of his son. He must be much cooler than I am.

tim said...

I'm going to finish off the drops left in my mini JD bottle, in the hopes that it will help us win.

Rob said...

I love how earlier Chip called the 4-for-19 Evan Longoria, "The Man of the Hour."

SoSock said...

How about some 2-out damage?

Tony said...

Way to go Crisp!

Benjamin said...

Plate him, Ellsbury.

s1c said...

LBJ needs to bust out here.

Rob said...

Your father said that, Ish!?! Whoa, scary to think he said that in front of his son. He must be much cooler than I am.

I know it! That's one of those things you'd never think your parents would say, even when you're 40 and they're 69.

Amy said...

Yeah, Ococ. Even if the anncrs could care less.

tim said...

Or is it Torontonian?

Correctamundo.

Your father said that, Ish!?! Whoa, scary to think he said that in front of his son. He must be much cooler than I am.

LOL. If only I posted half the shit my dad says.

SoSock said...

oCoC!!!!! -
2-out fun time!

Tony said...

Tim, mute the TV and turn on some tunes.

Yes. This is by far the best solution.

What're you spinning right now, ish?

Amy said...

Ish, my kids would just die if I made such a remark. Luckily, they don't live with me any more so I can say whatever I want!

Benjamin said...

Get to Pedroia.

tim said...

I can't deal with the delay, bothers me too much..... I guess I would just have to get used to it.

Oh well, you know what. I'm switching my view of these TBS announcers. Well, maybe TBS is more appropriate...anyhoo, their TB-glee is fucking awesome. You know why? Because it just makes their disappointment at the end of the series that much sweeter.

Amy said...

I think we need those shots now. We want a go ahead run, or at least a tying run.

Amy said...

Arggh.

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

Tony said...

Jesus, LBJ.

tim said...

The excitement in Chippy's voice...my god.

"POPPED HIM UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Something probably popped in his pants.

allan said...

L&A FULL SHOTS DONE!

beckett will now find a groove.

Amy said...

Something popped in his brain also. What an ass.

Who does this guy work for? Atlanta??

Rob said...

What're you spinning right now, ish?

I'm listening to Red Sox radio right now, actually. But I've got a 1000+ song playlist at my disposal if things get annoying.

Amy said...

I know Laura doesn't believe in jinxes or charms, but I am willing to believe in anything. Why not?

SoSock said...

Time for an OTT

Rob said...

Who does this guy work for? Atlanta??

Yep. He does do Braves games during the season when he's not doing TBS Sunday.

Benjamin said...

FFS.

Sarah Haendler said...

Eww.

Rob said...

93 mph fastball.

'Nuff said.

tim said...

Chip = shit.

Beckett is pitching like Chip.

Beckett pitching = shit.

FUCK.

Amy said...

Fuck you, Caray, and Cliff Floyd.

WTF, Beckett? Where is the Dominator?

Tony said...

God almighty. Just gopher ball after gopher ball. I guess Beckett was the one that fell through the wormhole.

Rob said...

I haven't heard anyone in the media talk about Beckett's lack of velocity, either.

andy said...

Somebody tell Beckett this is not batting practice.

Amy said...

How's our bullpen doing? Anyone warming? Who does long relief? Not Timlin, I hope.

Rob said...

That fastball was 91. That's FOUR mph off his changeup!

tim said...

We can score 3 next inning to retake this lead. Fucking rays. Fuck.

s1c said...

Holy Cow, Buck defending Beckett look for a new color analyst on the next game.

Sarah Haendler said...

I'm not worried. We're the fucking red sox.

Tony said...
This comment has been removed by the author.
tim said...

Byrd for a couple would be OK. We're into the fourth though... hmm.

Ideally, Masterson for 5 and 6, Okajima and MDC for 7 and 8, and Papelbon for 9?

Rob said...

Arnold: "The center fielder is the one who runs that thing."

Tony said...

Deleted my last comment. Need to try to keep the positivity alive. It's still the 4th.

tim said...

Jav-another run Lopez warming

SoSock said...

2 run deficit in the 4th - that ain't shit!

Rob said...

Sarah, I'm not really that worried either. Coming home from my sister's house I mentioned that this game doesn't sound or feel like an ALCS game.

allan said...

I'm not worried. We're the fucking red sox.

I like your style.

Amy said...

I like your attitude, Sarah. I believe. Just let's get Beckett either under control or out of there.
