Watch Game 5 Again -- Now!

MLB.com is re-showing last night's Game 5, beginning at 6 PM ET. I'm thinking this is pretty short notice -- it starts in 13 minutes -- but you'll want to see only the last three innings anyway!

I want to see a high-res screen shot showing the faces of the people who were leaving in the top of the 7th. I remember they showed this after Papelbon gave up the double. That said, I am sympathetic with people who have kids/families etc. and these games start very late in the east and last so long. It would be great to have some more day games for the playoffs. Wasn't Saturday's game supposed to be 4:30 eastern? Was it moved later because the NLCS is over?

Someone in the other thread, who was at the game, said no one (or almost no one) was leaving. They were just going to the concessions stands or the bathroom. He said the place was as packed as ever at the end.

They just showed it. I'm skeptical because everyone is wearing their coats as they are walking along the aisle. Probably folks in the bad seats filled in the vacated seats. But I agree that just because Caray says people were leaving, it doesn't mean they were ACTUALLY leaving.

I love that quote: "Nice throw Gabe"!

Listening to this again (MLB.com), you can hear Buck Martinez talking about the WS matchup between the Phils and Rays.

Most peolpe were even some of the most optimistic Red Sox fans....

Dr. Jeff said...

Do you think Wheeler's walk to Bay was semi-intentional? 4 straight balls.

Dr. Jeff said...

Drew's swing reminds me of Will Clark.

Dr. Jeff said...

Casey looked terrible up there.

Dr. Jeff said...

WHEELER looks worse. Why leave him in?

Dr. Jeff said...

You gotta love the 2-out Red Sox rallies during this post-season. Kotsay's 2-out double in the 8th was so unbelievably clutch.I was screaming at Coco to take ball four (did he foul off 3? 4? high pitches?) but if he walks, they might not have tied it. Epic at bat.

Dr. Jeff said...

By not keeping Kotsay close to the bag at 2nd, they gave him quite a jump on Crisp's hit. The throw was terrible, but it COULD have mattered.

Dr. Jeff said...

Stats on the bottom of the MLB.com feed show that Timlin tied Rivera for LCS appearances at 25. That probably means we will see him tomorrow to break the record.

Dr. Jeff said...

Is anyone else watching this?

Dr. Jeff said...

Is there any reason to think Coco shouldn't have gone to 2nd? With ANY reasonable throw, he advances easily. It was only that the throw is so bad that they can get him at 2nd. Remember it was a liner to short RF.

Dr. Jeff said...

Kudos to Masterson for his 9th inning performance. Yes, he was let off the hook by the DP, but HE induced it. Great job under tons of pressure.

Watching now.

Last night I totally thought Pedroia would be safe after the 3rd baseman missed the grounder. It was a good recovery to get him (unless Dustin was carrying a piano).

That's right. I think the percentage of Sox fans who still believed they would win at 7-0 was as small as the team's chances of winning.

Hey, I don't know either way. I don't really think Sox fans are such a special breed that no one would leave before the game was over. There are plenty of fairweather fans in all parks, even Fenway.

But you know, the TBS camera can catch 10 people leaving and make it sound like Fenway is emptying out. Check out James' comment in the previous thread.

Any reasonable person could be forgiven for giving up nearly all hope when Papelbon gave up the double. But that is the beauty of baseball. In football (and basketball, soccer, etc.), insurmountable leads ARE insurmountable because of the clock. Earl Weaver has a great quote about this...anyone remember it? Something about what makes baseball great, you have to let the other team get up and take a crack at it.

Dr. Jeff said...

re: l-girl's comment about fair weather fans. I grew up in the SF Bay Area and followed both the Giants and A's. In general people stayed. Then I went to college in L.A. This was late '80's/hershisher/gibson etc. L.A. fans routinely left early, it was not a cliche...6th inning the place would empty.

But this year I was impressed with how insane the L.A. fans were in the post-season, at least in the NLDS.

Dr. Jeff said...

What do you think about Madden's mound visit with 1-0? WTF feed ended??????

Dr. Jeff said...

You are kidding right? They show the whole game and cut away before Drew's hit?

allan said...

Earl Weaver:

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all."

Rob said...

Bill Simmons.

Was he lurking here last night?

I can't leave baseball games early , for the very reason that happened last night...you never know what you might see...

JD is more quiet.....JD works walks like no one I have ever seen, he's jogging down to first base and you can swear the guy only threw 2 pitches....Does anyone else get that..

allan said...

Simmons needs to fucking slap his old man around. And give himself a poke or three in the eye, too.

What the FUCK is wrong with these fans who turn off playoff games midway through?

...

Also I see why I stopped reading Simmons. His schtick got old for me years ago. And he hasn't much changed. (He still mentions Shawshank?????)

Rob said...

That was probably the second time I've read an article by Simmons, so that would explain why I thought it was really good. It was fun to read. 20 or so more columns later and it'd probably get old.

But I can relate to a lot of what he was talking about. I was doing a little bit of a pre-mortem post-mortem discussion with my father during the game about the Red Sox and coping with the end of the season and talking about the World Series... He was convinced they were going to lose. He didn't really care anymore. So he went to bed.

At least he watched the whole thing.

allan said...

Someone at SoSH posted that he watched the ninth inning and it cut out with Drew at the plate BEFORE his game-winning hit.

Way to go, MLB!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone notice that it was 7-0 in the 7th with 7 outs to go when the Sox scored the 7 to tie it? The Hero? #7 JD Drew. Guess is this one will go 7 games....

I've only been to Dodger Stadium twice, but both times the fans were great. These were just regular season games. The place was packed and rocking.

I love it there, such a beautiful park.
