Gammons: Red Sox Rejected Trade Of Buchholz For Victor Martinez

Gammons:
On the Adam LaRoche deal: The Red Sox have been searching for ways to upgrade their sliding offense for weeks. This deal has been on the table for three weeks, and after losing their fourth straight game on Tuesday and declining to trade Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez, Theo Epstein took LaRoche. ...

The Red Sox felt they had to move Wednesday because the Pirates had a deal to send LaRoche to another team in exchange for a better offer than Argenis Diaz and Hunter Strickland, but Boston was willing to take on his entire salary.

Ooooh, damn. Victor Martinez...I can understand why they passed this up, but, shit. That kind of offensive plus would have been sweet.

How does Hayman say that the talks have cooled , we just got Laroche like 6 hours ago...

If the Red Sox ever got Martinez , I don't see him being the catcher of the future, maybe the 1b of the future and just move Yook to 3rd....and wait for Mauer

Sure, but that would make LaRoche redundant...or rather, overredundant.

(That's a self-reflexively fucked up word if you think about it.)

He is a bad defensive catcher. Probably belongs at 1B or DH. I'm glad they didn't hve up Buchholz for him

I don't like Victor M for Buchholz. I think we can do much better for Bucky and now is not the time to trade starting pitching without getting some starter back.
